Does anyone know how to refresh/clear the search bar in KDE? I have a bunch of files named terminal that no longer exist, but they show up anyway.

I generally use terminal as a shortcut to get to Konsole, but that list is still growing.

There no such thing like "unix" today.
Unix WAS an proprietary, shite OS in the 60-70s.
GNU started to rewrite it, when Linux appeared, there was an unix-like OS which was the first OS which was actually cool, free, hackable and fucking amazing. Sure the base ideas are borrowed off the old Unix, but I really suggest to anyone who feels that "Unix is so beautiful" to actually run Unix. It's shite. you cant modify it, you cant hack and its crippled, you can even imagine how much its crippled.

People need to stop RIGHT NOW to call everything UNIX, especially the most crippled version of it called macOS, which basically is the same as crippled version of Windows with lipstick painted on and robbed BSD programs (the only part of macOS which is actually remotly related to Unix).

ree
>>
>>62276857
Applel calls its OS UNIX because they have a certification by the Open Group which holds the trademark rights for UNIX, so technically, the only UNIX OS today is actually macOS https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_UNIX_Specification#Currently_Registered_UNIX_systems

That said, I agree with everything you said.
>>
>>62276804
>>62276730
You can't via hosts, especially not with a site that serves dynamic IPs.

The best you can do is "alias" google to the other site. So, one example would be to 1) wipe google from your history or fully clear your history, and then 2) bookmark the alternative site as "google" or "goog" or however much/little of the word you type before you usually autocomplete it.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Richard Stallman is a Jesus walking on earth right now. People hate him because his pureness is inconvenient, but when time has passed, they say "Stallman was right", "RMS warned us". In 300 years, when owning something without DRM is legal again, people will start writing books about Stallman. In 2000 years, when people left earth already because some hacker nearly destroyed the whole mankind in order to take down the botnet controlling all cyborgs, cyborgs will visit low tech churches, sharing their source codes, so they can improve themsevels and have an eye on it, an eye on freedom

Hey guys I'm having some trouble getting Tails OS to boot on a lenovo yoga 310.

I have intermediary tails on a usb plugged in. My first issue when getting to the boot menu was that when I tired to boot from USB it came up with an error message that said it had been blocked by the current security policy. I solved this by going into the BIOS boot settings and allowing for legacy boot.

Now I can boot from the usb fine, I get to the tails boot loader menu, I press enter and then I get a black screen with a flashing underscore in the top left corner. This underscore has been flashing for the last 10 minutes.

I've tried using both Universal USB installer and Rufus.akeo and have had this issue both times. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm a tech scrub btw.

I've translated the pasta to serbian:

>>
>>62276673
Install something simple like Ubuntu MATE, hit Ctrl+Alt+F1 and do everything from there.
>>
>>62278008

Now translate this:

Hello there! You seem to have used the term "open source".
The term "open source" was created by a group of people that did not want to be associated with the free software movement. When I say "free" software (which is one of the alternatives preferable to "open source"). It's not about price; in that case I would say "gratis", or "free as in free beer". It's about "freedom"! This is what the free software movement is fighting for.
So what is "free" software? Free software is any software that guarantees the user the four essential software freedoms:
> 0. Run the program as you wish.
> 1. Study the source code and change it so it does what you wish.
> 2. Redistribute exact copies of the program.
> 3. Distribute your modified version of the program.
Some people decided that they wanted to restrict the user; but being able to study and modify the "open source" code is not enough! This is directly hurting the cause of the free software movement because it takes away the sociological "freedom" aspect of free software and turns it into a technological one.
So for those reasons I ask that in the future you use the terms "free", "free/libre" or, if necessary "FLOSS" (short for "free/libre and open source"), though the latter should still be avoided.

Use 'Konsole' to get to a terminal or just use a keybind like ctrl+t or something. Personally I use a drop down terminal regardless of the DE I'm using. I always use alt+grave for my drop down terminal. Yakuake is hands down the best drop down terminal for KDE. On GTK DEs Guake, Tilda, and xfce4-terminal --drop-down are all great options.

Used Leap on work laptop for close to a year without any problems.
I used to run Tumbleweed at home (no problems either) but went distro-hopping again recently.
It's very stable and the package manager (zypper) is probably the best I've seen.
Installer is advanced, with a very good partitioner capable of encryption, LVM, RAID, ramdisks, etc. and you can also add additional repositories and configure which packages get installed, so you can set up the whole system during installation and then save a template that you can later use for other installs.

>>
>>62285220
Yes, but you can easily recover it.
What happens is: when you install windows, it writes bootloader to /dev/sda. When you install your distro of choice, it moves the windows bootloader to /dev/sda1 (or wherever it is) and installs grub on /dev/sda. If windows then installs its bootloader on /dev/sda again, grub is gone but your OS/data is unharmed.
You can install grub to /dev/sda2 and /dev/sda, then if grub overwrites you can just change BIOS boot order to load /dev/sda2 directly.

Why do you want to do it in a single package? It will fuck up dependency resolution.
>>

Honestly I think the reason /media started becoming a thing is because mounting drives is an area that crosses into every day usage territory and some people thought the name /mnt wasn't as "user friendly" as /media.

I really think that's all it is and any attempts to justify it or categorically separate the two for different uses is just BS.

This has nothing to do with systemd and everything to do with you not understanding basic Unix concepts.

>>
>>62286222
Xubuntu or Ubuntu MATE I would say since gnome3 is a complete clusterfuck.
>>
>>62286222
Honestly, it's a matter of thinking of what the "babby" wants out of the experience.

A generic answer of Ubuntu/Fedora/Mint worked in the past because people literally had never used a serious OS outside of Windows. But with phone OSes being rather full-fledged, most people nowadays have enough experience to be able to say, "OK, I know something besides Windows." Obviously, there are big differences between mobile OSes and desktop OSes, but for the sake of introductions to new things, we can draw a lot of comparison in user-experience between desktop Linux flavors and Android/iOS.

So, again, what does the babby want? Something similar to Windows/macOS but different from them in terms of packages/programs? Get the usual suspects: Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora. If they want more control over how their system gets set up and (potentially) have more time to spare in learning, get Arch or Debian.

To see what font firefox is actually choosing right click the text and select "inspect element" and at the very right you'll see a Fonts tab. Browsers don't always use what you tell them, and also you have a fontconfig on your system that can mix and match fonts in funny ways too so you don't always get what you expect. That Fonts tab will tell you exactly what you're getting though

I believe infinality was pretty much just absorbed into the mainline fontconfig already

It still isnt the same despite using the "infinality" config setting

Is that i3status bar or something else? If so how do you get it to do the color underlines and the volume bar like that?

Thanks a lot. I've installed ttf-liberation, enabled subpixel rendering in /etc/fonts/local.conf and it looks good now.

It's polybar-git from AUR.

How do I create a bootable linux partition on my hard drive from windows?

I don't have an USB stick at hand but 2 hard drives and want to install arch
>>
>>62287945
You can give full access to the second harddrive to a GNU/Linux vm.

what a retard

No i want to dump windows. I just need a partition I can use for the arch iso from which i install

GIve a partition to a vm, and set up your boot on that vm.
>>
>>62288009
on the off chance that I look like a total retard, can a vm access the main fs or what do you mean by this?
>>
>>62288068
There is method to give raw access to disk to a vm. But I'm mostly ignorant on that, I just know that someone one day did it.

If you don't want virtualbox or wine (or install Windows), then you don't have any other option besides QEMU senpai
>>
>>62288100
I think you can choose what "groups of packages" or whatever you want to install, but I don't really know how much Debian installs if you uncheck everything

I never heard about unchecking stuff
If i want to install something, i just do sudo apt-get install xorg.
What do you mean unchecking?

Same stuff.

Unit files are much easier to write than init scripts and include features such as making it easy to automatically restart services.

It wouldn't be that bad if lennart hadn't gone full retard with it and just kept it as a straightforward init/rc replacement.

Aaah, I've fucked up lads, I fucked it up.
Fuck, today, at 10.00 AM CEST, my 128GB SanDisk Ultra MicroSDXC died. And I was probably the reason, there is no other explanation.

I had an ext4 partition on that SD card where I had my GNU Arch Linux user space (If I'm allowed to call it that) which I used to mount and chrooted every single day on my phone. I formatted that partition without journaling like how they recommend when formatting ext to SDs. I had other two partitions on it, 1 exfat and one used by android encrypted adopted storage. I don't know, I noticed that some times when I tried to seek where I left off playing a music file of size 1GB with the default music player, it wouldn't fetch the data and android would just crash, doing a soft reboot. This only happened with that specific file and that specific music player. I thought it was just one of that app's bugs, so I didn't gave it much thought, I could work flawlessly with my chrooted Arch Machine if I didn't use THAT music player.

But, today, FUCK. the SD card just died while I was chatting on irc on my chrooted machine and updating some apps. I got a damn bus error and everything on my terminal crashed. It doesn't make sense to me. Was it too stressful for it?

It is a hardware failure, I had it plugged on my laptop and the logs are throwing me timeouts for hardware interrupts. I'm pretty sure I had deactivated journaling on my ext partition, it can't be the reason as to why it died.
I'm sad, fuck.

Wait what. You supposed to turn off journaling on SSD's? I never heard that.
>>
>>62288839
>>62288939

You're supposed to turn off file access time (noatime), not journalling.
