What are you gonna put your sticker on, /tpg/?
Are you worried that someone might recognize you as the 4chan browsing goblin that you are?

>>62242792
Cool but for a niche market and the concept of a modern 4:3 laptop with mid 2000's business design is not going to come back. Its great that someone is bothering to do it all for the few people who truly want one though.

Help please m8s

My Thinkpad doesn't go into sleep mode after closing the lid regardless of the OS. Thought the PCB with the camera and microphone above the screen had something to do with it so i did some tests and noticed that the camera does while the microphone does not. How is this possible if both use the same cable? is that pcb even related to my issue? Any suggestions?
>>
>>62243030
power management settings?
try that
>>
>>62243064
Already tried on Windows and also booting Linux, as i said it happens regardless of the OS.

It does the same thing if i turn it on while docked and with the lid closed, the screen turns on and everything.
>>
>>62243101
go into bios maybe? I dont know if your model controls your screen that way.
>>
>>62243273
I'm sure it's hardware related because it used to work fine and i never touched the BIOS.

What I'm confused about is why the camera works but the microphone (and probably the lid sensor if it's there) doesn't since they share the same cable. And no, the mic isn't disabled in the OS or the BIOS.
>>
Fuck yeah, new thread! Quick question: my brother's going to be doing some work with Source Filmmaker (I'll have to check Wine compatibility, otherwise RIP the Linux dream) and an anon helped me narrow it down to an X240 for him. Anything better under $350?

>>
>>62243030
I think your screen position sensor is bad. I'm not sure if it's on the camera/thinklight PCB but it is in that area, I think.

There should also be a strange magnet in the left side of the palm rest I think. That's what the magnet is for.

The magnet could be missing or moved.

Is this worth it?
I trying to find a laptop for my normie sister, who fucked her previous one up.
She wants it for college and playing the sims.

I mean you should have seen the previous one, her boyfriend """fixed""" the screen by putting screws in it. I dont know how that fucking retard gor so lucky and diddnt damage any chips with the drill he used.
>>
>>62244026
I'm in the same situation.

>normie sisters first laptop dies after she manages to melt the plastic vent covers over the CPU fan exhaust.

>normie sisters second laptop dies after repeated and violent abuse. Unlike minorities, beating it won't make it work faster.

So, currently have a t430 on its way. I'd guess that battery life is important for college, so maybe go for a tn / non ips or whatever the current screen equivalent is. Also, just look up the minimum requirements for whatever sims game it is and go from there.

Know that it will break eventually, but you will be safe in the knowledge that the thinkpad died a warriors death.
>>
>>62244089
I really dont want to buy used because I will hear it from my sister if she finds out.

Should I continue with a thinkpad or something else? Can you give me some general advice I dont have a clue about thinkpads, I only lurked here for 30 minutes and then went to amazon.

Also I got to give it to my sister, I would have thrown that piece of shit laptop out of the window ages ago, it was restarting on its own (propably from all the dust and hair) once every 4-5 hours and she still kept it for a year.
>>
Ok faggots, got myself a t420 with an i5.

what is the best processor I can put into this thing?
>>
You might be able to sway her opinion a little if you tell her how much it was worth new. If you have to go for something new,

otherwise, take a look at https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lenovo-Thinkpad-14-Inch-Notebook-Black/dp/B07253HMXC/ref=sr_1_3?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1504507493&sr=1-3&keywords=thinkpad+-refurbished

from what I can tell from the one you posted, it is cheaper, trades the HDD for an SSD but it has no dedicated graphics, so you would have to check what the requirements are for running the sims.
>>

>>
>>62244270
T420 or better. X40 is for enthusiasts to collect, not to use daily.
>>
>>62244317
Literally all of them that don't cost $5 shipped
anything that's roughly the same size should get the same battery life
Shit I've had Chinese batteries that are slightly bigger and get me even better battery life.
>>62244270
I've got a t40 and outside of typing things into note pad (doubt it could run a modern version of word) it's god awfully slow.
>>62244200
anything dualcore will be fine, but not worth the upgrade
quadcores will work, but you better not even think about stressing the cpu and gpu at the same time unless you want to burn your house down.
>>
>>62244345
Is there any aftermarket solution for heating? I got one with the nvidia gpu hoping to play light TF2/doom mods when my studies are light yet im away from home.
>>
>>62244379
a cpu upgrade won't help with games
you are by far limited by your gpu.
only way to get better performance is through an egpu, or by getting a new laptop entirely.
>>
>>62244410
Eh, thats were you are wrong with the source engine(TF2), still I just mostly wanted to best cpu for the thing because of modern programs being bloated(that and I like fucking around with my hardware).

I decided on a i7-3540M. Dual core and draws as much power as my current cpu.
>>
>>62243994
Fug, tried with a speaker magnet on the pcb area and on the palmrest to no avail, maybe the magnet was too powerful? i don't know what else to do.
>>
>>62244317
I would advise against this.
The individual batteries within the cheap laptop batteries start to fail and you can't easily tell which ones use lower quality internal batteries.
I've seen some 25 Eur batteries that had help only 40% of designed after a year.
>>
>>62244430
ivy bridge wont work in *20 series thinkpads
and trust me that piss ant gpu is what's holding you back
even with the new fucked up source engine going from a t420 to a t430 makes a huge difference and the only real upgrade there is the gpu.

T420 without Nvidia,
Is it normal that the Displayport isn't working under Windows 10?

This is gf's laptop, if I hookup my own Ganoo/Loonux T420/X220 to the same adapter/hdmi/display it works, but hers doesn't.
Tried troubleshooting everything I could think of.
Looking up online, all I'm seeing is "PM sent ;)" and "This product is not supported anymore by Intel, thus is not compatible with Windows 10, please install a compatible OS"

I'm confident that the port works, as I've already used it in the past. Now it seems like it won't detect anymore, for some reason.

I've been thinking lately.
The original VW Beetle is kinda the ThinkPad of cars, isn't it? Maybe not beautiful to a young beholder but
solid, reliable and it feels nice. There's one major difference though: The Beetle was concieved as a car
for Joe Workingman. ThinkPads are a bit too expensive to be the Volkscomputer. So, if you had to design said
Volkscomputer, what would it look like? What would the features be?

My concept:
The two different models of the Volkscomputer should be based on the T40 and X40. By that I mean, the case
should be equally sturdy and well made. Of course, when it comes to I/O and computing power they should
be more capable than laptops were back in the day. Now, keep in mind this concept would only work in an
ideal world. A non-botnet modern dual core CPU should be sufficient. Core2 CPUs are aging, which is why the
CPU should rather be comparable to a current gen i5. 8GB RAM should be standard with an option for a 16GB
upgrade. dGPU must also be an option on the larger model. Ports should include USB type A, Ethernet, digital
video out, maybe eSATA and Expresscard. As for displays, resolution should be first priority. 3:4 on 12" and 14"
models and a 16:10 option for 14" models.
If I had to list all available configurations, it would go something like this:

12" 1400x1050, 2x2GHz or 2x2.5GHz, 8GB RAM or 16GB RAM, eGPU support
14" 1600x1200, 2x2.5GHz or 2x3GHz or 4x2.5GHz, 8GB RAM or 16GB RAM, iGPU or dGPU, eGPU support
14" 1680x1050 or 1920x1200, 2x2.5GHz or 2x3GHz or 4x2.5GHz, 8GB RAM or 16GB RAM, iGPU or dGPU, eGPU support

They wouldn't be the most powerful laptops on the market but I'd rather save some money on power than on
overall quality.
The main problem is that most people don't know what's good for them. This will stay a concept because the
average consumer won't ever buy a 4:3 laptop that looks like pic related.

The trackpoint is the superior input method. I'd use it over a mouse any day. You got to set the sensitivity as high as you possibly bear and after a few days of getting used to it you increase sensitivity again. Do this in steps and once you reach maximum sensitivity it's gonna be the best user experience ever. You should never have to take your fingers off the home row. That's the fundamental design flaw with every single mouse input method except the trackpoint.

>without Intel-compatible CPUs

I'd like the machine to run on free software only of course and having free hardware is an absolute must here. I wouldn't mind if there was a free x86 CPU though.

I think the real flaw in my idea is, that the average consumer doesn't know about free software and will probably avoid it when presented with its limitations.
People want Netflix, Amazon, Facebook etc. while my concept assumes that the users will primarily use a computer to practice free speech and maybe to gain
knowledge and improve themselves but I guess that's just somewhat delusional.

The conclusion is that the target group exists but is too limited to actually make money with that product. Only a non-profit organization backed by people with
piles of money and even bigger piles of good will could pull this off. But serving such a limited target group would defeat the purpose. It's supposed to be the
Volkscomputer after all.

Get a T420 or T410 if you want an Intel Core CPU. I had a T420 with an i7 CPU and it ran beautifully, even running virtual machines. It should suit your needs unless you're doing very heavy encoding or something. It can also run Windows 10 without any problems or hiccups, if you're into that.

If you're just using it for note-taking, productivity software (spreadsheets, word processing, presentations, etc.), light browsing, even a T400 or X200 will be more than powerful enough. I used an X200t (with a low-voltage Core2Duo) in university and it worked perfectly Linux. I still use it to this day.

>>
>>62254354
>from what? 7 feet away?
What's the smallest angle the eye can subtend at about 2 1/2 feet?

It's retina resolution at a typical laptop viewing distance.
>>
>>62254354
>from what? 7 feet away?
PPI isn't dependent on distance. it measures the number of pixels per diagonal inch.
btw I'm not saying I could use this resolution as my daily driver but it's comfy for shitposting and reading PDFs.

>>62254375
a retina screen is typically viewed from the same distance. PPI is significantly lower on the Thinkpad. that's just a fact.
>>
>>62254410
Retina means your eyes can't see individual pixels from a typical viewing distance. It is not a constant but depends on screen size.
>>
>>62254475
Of course it depends on screen size. But the lowest PPI retina screen available is that of the 15" MBP. That's 220PPI. More than twice as much as 12" 1024x768 screen.
Both are viewed from the same distance. You don't put an X60 twice as far away from you as a MBP, do you?
>>
>>62254515
OK actually the lowest PPI apple offers is the 5k 27" iMac (217PPI)
>>
>>62254515
Retina simply means your eyes can't discern individual pixels at a certain viewing distance, which of course depends on screen size and viewing distance.

I'll ask again, what's the smallest angle the eye can subtend?

People who can't do math believe 4K > 1080 > 640 but they don't realize that viewing distance is what matters most.

For a person with 20/20 vision to see the difference between 640 and 1080 they'd have to site closer than two screen diagonals, and for that person to see the differenc between 1080 and 4K they'd have to sit closer than ***1/2 the screen diagonal*** and similar math can be applied to computer screens.

It's pretty easy math after all.
>>
>>62254013
It does, although IIRC there were some issues.
>>
>>62254704
So you're telling me you can't tell pixels apart on a 12" 1024x768 screen at arm's length. That's concerning. Are you allowed to drive?

Another night chilling with my T430 in bed. Gonna watch The Hobbit and go to sleep.

Buying a T430 was one of the best decisions I have ever made.

>What's the smallest angle the eye can subtend at a typical laptop viewing distance of 2 1/2 feet?
That sentence makes absolutely no sense. There's no angle here. It's just a fact that I can see individual pixels on my X61t at arm's length and my vision isn't the best by far.

Pretty much. But I think the W700 can be specced a bit higher.

There's a huge leap from "based on" to "rebrand". Not everyone cares too much about the internals, there are other options if the only important part is that it has to serve a poweruser. For me it's entirely interface and keyboard layout that draws me, that's what I need in my laptop.

>Lenovo in charge of making an actual """retro""" ThinkPad

Meanwhile, some small Chinese company is modding the T60 ("T70") to include modern components:
>15 inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1400x1050
>Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU
>32GB-DDR4 RAM

Why are you going to buy a "retro" ThinkPad based on the T470 when you can buy a used T70 in a few years? Pic related.
>>
>>62254996
why would you get a thinkpad for gaming?
>>
>>62255044
Business users don't care about the keyboard and /g/ doesn't want a typical chinkpad.

They failed to identify their real market and go after it. They should fire their market research Jews and listen exclusively to /g/ next time.

You'll be lucky if you can get 30fps out of Gamecube games from 2002 on a Thinkpad.

I'm a business user, I want a better keyboard. Do you think work prohibits a need for a functional keyboard and ergonomics? it's all about a good workflow.
Solid internals are all well and good, but I need a tall screen and a seven row keyboard to optimize my productivity far more.

english isn't my native language so maybe you mean something entirely different from what I think you mean, but to me pic related is an angle. so where's the angle when looking at a screen? I mean, there's a viewing angle but that doesn't have anything to do with distinguishing pixels

It depends entirely on what country you're in and what features the W500 has.

OK at that distance the angle one pixel produces is roughly 0.025 deg
can't find information on what is minimum for the human eye though.
still, the fact remains that I can see the individual pixels, for example on the diagonal line of the mouse cursor (windows 7, standard size cursor)

If you want to do gaymen on a Thinkpad, get one with an express card slot and get an eGPU. X220/30 and T520/T420/30 all have a bunch of documentation on how it's pulled off.

The W series though lacks documentation, though I got a 1050 Ti working on mine with relative ease. It was more or less plug and play.

Yeah it sucks that Lenovo doesn't go find shady backdoor dealers to by hi-res 4:3 displays. Why can't they just look on eBay for some?
>>
>>62255840
Lenovo could easily custom-order some 4:3 screens. People make custom screen orders all the time, have for decades. Surely a multi-billion dollar company could do it if fucking Adafruit can.
>>
>>62255864
>Adafruit moves the same amount of units as Lenovo

Neither one of which were claims, merely that if a fly by night garage operation can make a custom screen order, Lelnovo can too.

Whenever I play games on my laptop (T430, W10) lately left clicks are not being recognized about half the time. On two different mice and the trackpoint buttons. It doesn't seem to happen in normal usage. Do you guys have any suggestions?
>>
>>62255912
But in order for Lenovo to order screens the supplier has to meet their standards. A company refused to commission a job from us because we had a cable on the floor that didn't meet h&s standards, now imagine that with a company the size of Lenovo
>>
>>62254939
Too bad you didn't get a T420s, T400, X200, X220.
>>
>>62255963
>But in order for Lenovo to order screens the supplier has to meet their standards.
Yep, I never claimed otherwise. Certainly a company like Lelnovo making a large contract with a screen manufacturer would stipulate that the screens meet a certain level of quality.

Expand your mind and think before you post kid.

It's substantially cheaper than buying a desktop, and can more or less be "plug n played". You just have to shut down your thinkpad each time you want to take it on the go with you.

Unless you're point is you want to game on the go, in which case you've picked the wrong machine for the job.

I think thinkpad users were the Enterprise crowd. Why would the Enterprise crowd purchase modified ten year old laptops? Not even American public schools are that desperate. They'd sooner purchase Chromebooks (in-fact, some have).

While there are laptops that are well suited to gaming, generally Thinkpads are not among them. There are thinkpads that are very high-end and can be quite suitable for gaming but let's be real: Thinkpads (at least the T and X series) are designed to be durable, not xxxgamingxxx machines.

With all that being said, the Thinkpad P50 would probably make a decent "gaming computer." At its price on Amazon, I suggest you build yourself a desktop PC and you will not only save money but probably have better hardware in the long run.
