I've changed it once, because it shut down even if I had more than 30% charge. Still, it doesn't last long, and when below 20% it drains even faster
>glitches
I haven't yet understood what triggers this event, but sometimes a windows pops up telling me "SIM card not detected - reboot", at which point I can only reboot the phone; sometimes it happens very frequently, sometimes it doesn't happen at all for many weeks straight.

When it came out it was the best, nowadays I wouldn't pick it up even if was new.

If money wasn't a concern I'd build my own goddamn smartphone. For more readily available choices, I'd get the V30, which will probably release at a too steep price for me, so I'll have to choose between waiting (again) for the price to drop, or to just buy it regardless.

I'm thinking of buying a Xiaomi Mi Mix(once the new one is revealed and hopefully the price comes down even more).

Any reason not to? I was looking at the 4/128 version because the price difference is pretty significant, and overall it's almost down to affordable levels.

I could afford the 6GB version or probably even the new one as long as it ends up under $1k, but I'm not that keen on spending that much money on a phone, and if the leaks are right it doesn't even look that good.

Moto Z Play

>How is it operating now compared to when you unboxed it?
I bought it 3 weeks ago so pretty good, no issues besides some overheating every now and then

>glitches

>Would you recommend it?
yeah, it has a good battery and nice specs, it's pretty big for a 5.5 inch phone tho

>If money wasn't a concern, what phone would you get?
maybe an Oneplus 3T or HTC 10, yeah U11 got a better camera and specs, but Metal>>>>>Glass, I'd buy a Google Pixel (regular size) but no microSD is killer
>>
>>62230892

If it takes pics in 720p or even 1080p versus a camera that gets 2160p, there is a difference. Megapixels don't mean shit these days, just a marketing term to make people think "More megapixels means more gooder!"
>>
>>62230850
>no removable battery
I can understand the other two, but this one hasn't made sense to me in almost 5 years.

Who seriously actually NEEDS a removable battery anymore? Back in 2010-2011 when a phone battery would last you half a day at best, yes having a removable battery made a lot more sense because even moderate cell phone users either had to keep the phone plugged in constantly or carry an extra battery, the wait time to charge a battery from scratch was several hours, charging your phone for an hour might get you 20-25% battery life.

These days however you can get 40-50% charge in under 30 minutes.
>>
>>62230892
No, the number of megapixels doesn't say shit about the camera quality. What matters is the camera sensor and image processing software. I guarantee you that the 2MP camera on the Pixel or S8 for example takes better photos than your old phone.
>>
>>62230835

>>
>>62230961
>>62230945
>>62230920
So how do I tell what resolution something will take photos in?
>>
>>62230892
High resolution doesn't mean high quality. In fact, high resolution images taken with a bad sensor will look even worse.
>>
>>62230958
The software is ending up being the biggest factor with smartphone cameras.

Smartphones by design are limited in size, so no matter what you'll never have a massive sensor with a nice lens. So all the companies throwing super wide aperture lenses on these tiny sensors then ignore the software get blown out by shittier lenses on similar or even identical CMOS sensors, but if the software processing is better, the "worse" camera is still going to look better.
>>
>>62230961
Those PureView cameras actually had a reason to be high megapixel, it's called pixel oversampling
>>
>>62230746

>>
>>62230978

>>
>>62230978

2160p = 3840 x 2160 pixels or 4096 x 2160 pixels
1080p = 1920x1080
>>
>>62231030

Huawei Mate 9

>How is it operating now compared to when you unboxed it?
As good as day 1 since January, even after the update from Android 6 - 7

>speed
Top tier. Zero slowdown in daily tasks. The Kirin 960 is a winner. Up there with the Snapdragon 835 in practical use.

>battery
Top tier. 4000 mah. It also helps that the display is 1080p, so it's pushing less pixels than your average flagship. Pulls down 2 - 4 days on a charge depending on usage.

>glitches
EMUI is the biggest downside. The battery saving algorithm is mostly good, but can err on the zealous side sometimes. I've had several apps have to be re-opened after letting it go to sleep and waking it up again.

>Would you recommend it?
If you like big screens, massive battery life, and consistently solid performance, absolutely.

>If money wasn't a concern, what phone would you get?
Money is actually no concern, and I just buy whatever I fancy at the moment. I also own an LG G6 that I switch back to at times. I bought a Moto Play to try out with the Gamepad Mod, but that thing is meh. I might pick up the V30, Mate 10, or Pixel 2 depending on reviews.
>>
>>62231179
>power banks are fucking shit, compared to spare batteries
Well that's where you're wrong, I can charge all my devices with a power bank, a spare battery is only for the phone
>>
>>62231191
youre rich, why not just buy s8?
>>
>>62231179
>second: imagine youre on a 8+ hr flight, you can just bring some spare batteries and be good on your way

What the fuck 8 hour flight doesn't have USB ports or an AC outlet?

Further, by having a removable batter you basically make wireless charging impossible (or at least a real pain in the ass), you make water proofing next to impossible as well. Not to mention making the phone physically larger for the same size battery, or you're forced to have a smaller battery in the same size device.

Also, maybe if you didn't buy cheap shitty chink battery banks you wouldn't have issues. The Anker PowerCore+ 26800mAh bank has Quick charge 3.0 and can fast charge most modern phones so you can get 40-50% battery in like 30-45 minutes.

>Phone tends to overheat during charging (since it hac QC 3.0)

>Stock google apps can be annoying (google photos in my case, I perfer gallery app on my old GS5)
>Metal back makes it uncomfortable to hold after heavy use
>>
>>62231212
1. I don't like Samsung's edge displays. They're gaudy, more fragile, distort the image, and add more glare. I owned an S7 with the flat screen, which I gave to my mom who needed a replacement for her aging HTC One M8.

2. TouchWiz has certainly come a long way, but it's still pig disgusting. The S7's bloat was still pretty unacceptable. The worst was Samsung Pay, which was pre-loaded. I disabled it in the App settings, but after every update, it would literally re-enable itself and put an overlay on the homescreen again to open when accidentally swiped. I didn't want to fuck around with rooting on a phone I wasn't going to own very long anyway. Wasn't worth the hassle.

3. lmao @ a Bixby button you can't re-purpose

4. Fingerprint sensor is in the stupidest fucking position on the S8. I can tell it would just piss me off in daily use.

That's actually one of the few samsung bloat features that actually is pretty universally loved by the community at large.

Many MANY people wish other phones offered smasung pay, having a phone that works on pretty much ANY credit card reader from the past 35 years is pretty damn handy. The only type of reader it doesnt work on is the insert type readers at ATMs and gas stations. Any swipe reader works without issue however.

Samsung pay is fucking cancer because you can't turn it off. I agree with him.
>>
>>62231297
Regardless of how well it may work as a payment platform for others, I don't like when a device's branding culture assumes that choice of platform for you. I should have the ability to lock that feature out of my phone forever if I don't use it (I was using Android Pay instead). Instead it just kept turning itself back on and sticking its ass in my business.
>>
>>62231329

And with samsung pay you wouldnt have to worry since it doesnt use any proprietary interface, it mimics the magnetic stripe on a normal card. So ANY reader from the past 30-40 years can work with samsung pay.

Android pay and apple pay rely on NFC and need new credit card machines to work with, samsung pay doesn't have this limitation.

If it's a credit card machine that isn't an insert type (generally only found at gas stations and ATMs) then it will work. Period.

>AC outlets

I was on a flight that had an AC outlet and the outlet didn't work because it wouldn't charge my laptop and that's with and without a region-specific adapter.

Also, there was nothing written on the site where I was buying my ticket that I would need to pay extra for an AC outlet so I was kinda pissed it didn't work.
>>
>>62231387
I'm aware of how Samsung Pay works, and it didn't work 1/3 times I tried it, so I ditched it. Having to explain it to cashiers is also a hassle.
>>
>>62231411
You must've been using a shitty case with metal blocking the signal or something, because I use it daily (dem reward points) and have been using it daily for like 18 months, it works 90-95% of the time the first time, and if it doesn't work the first time it pretty much always does the 2nd time. I've never had to get out my actual card as a substitute.

the waterproofing wasn't the issue dipshit

consumer tastes were shifting, they wanted more premium looking phones, which is hard to accomplish with a removable back

obviously most people would like the OPTION to remove the battery
>potentially extends lifespan of your phone
>cheaper repair / maintenance (no specialist tools required to open phone)
>allows longer phone use when not near a charger

the LG G5 sold like shit too, that wasn't at all water resistant
so clearly it wasn't waterproofing that was the issue

Nope, just a thin rubber grip case.

General rule of thumb is that if your phone is relatively obscure, you likely won't find a good custom ROM for it, because they're passion projects from people who want AOSP on their devices. You could always port your own like LineageOS if you have the drive, but I figured you wouldn't be asking if you wanted to go that route. You could always root it and do other nice stuff like hosts file adblocking, Xposed tweaks, etc.

In a bind here. Small guy, small hands. Looking between the G6 and V20. Prefer some of the niche aspects of the V20 such as the second screen, IR blaster, removable battery, quad DAC, and really genuinely appreciate these. However, in most other ways the G6 looks to still hold a slight edge, all while being able to fit in my hand. The V20 seems really huge, probably just outside the range I can extend my thumb without hyperextending it to death.

Most pressing issue for me on G6 though is the 18:9. How well is the option to swap it? Does it make a huge difference?

I haven't handled a phone with a curved screen myself but I doubt the curve degrades content to the extant that you're imagining, especially when it's as small as the V30's curve: https://youtu.be/JiL-EvmUEnM?t=30s

And it's not "cutting off" content, it's wrapping it. That probably results in some slight distortion of the image but any app/webpage with decent design won't put important content right up against the side of the display anyway.

>battery
good life, rarely have to charge during the day, but battery isn't removable
>glitches
And this is where my recommendation ends. Yesterday I got hit with my first major glitch and it's a serious one. My navigation bar has completely stopped responding to touch. Safe mode, factory reset with no auto restore, no effect. But it's not hardware, because on the lock screen the buttons at the bottom of the screen still respond. It's some kind of OS-level issue with navigation. Tons of reports of this from others online as well, and Lenovo is just ignoring it.

So no, I don't recommend a phone that loses basic operational ability in the month after the warranty expires.

If money were no concern, I'd probably get a pixel

I don't think it's a software issue, I lean more on believing it's an hardware problem.

G6 will survive an accidental drop tho
>>
I'm considering the Xperia Z3 Compact. It seems reasonably good for its price, considering I'm not a fan of massive 5"+ bricks.

Is it true that it breaks very easily or is it an urban legend?
I've read that the screen magically cracks or ceases functionning, that the GPS can fail and that some plastic part just breaks. But besides that, the reviews are usually great.
>>
>>62235150
Why would you buy a 3 year old phone?
>>
If I buy a used LG g6 for ATT, can I get it unlocked easily if I wasn't on an ATT plan already?

Let's say I am currently on an ATT plan and have already passed the 2 year mark that requires me to stay on contract. If I bought a used ATT locked phone would they unlock it for me?
>>
>>62235186
Because:
- recent phones are too big for my taste (except the smallest iPhone, but screw that)
- it seems very good (at least I don't need better)
- it can be bought at a fair price now (I don't want a 500 bucks brick in my pocket)
>>
>>62235234
If you have a locked phone and you're not on contract they should unlock it for you. Only reason I can see they wouldn't is if the imei were blacklisted.

Looking for a replacement for my XperiaZ1:

Max: 500€

Country: France

Want:
-Oled
-at least Snap820-level in terms of power
-good audio quality
-audio jack

Stuck between the S7 edge and the OP5.
But through some shenanigans, I can get the S7 edge for 70-80€ cheaper.

Which one would be worth it and why?
Is the OP screen resolution a problem? Is there still some hardware issues?
Is the S7 meme screen so fragile?

Isn't there a better opportunity?
>>
>>62235340
Yea I know. It looks promising. I expect the price will be too high though. So I intend to use an older one for a year or two and then buy a newer compact, possibly the XZ1C.
>>
>>62235370
Might as well get a S8 for 100€ more
>>
>>62235365
That one was on my list too indeed. Is it really better than the Z3? Is the difference in price worth it?
>>
>>62230094
I had the stuck power button problem with my old nexus 5. It now refuses to turn on unless charging and even then just gets stuck in a boot loop.
>>
Is there any reason to get a usb 3.1 cable for my phone when they only support MTP? Or does MTP support 3.1 speeds?
>>
>>62235420
I considered it, but 500€ is a really hard cap for me. Might spend a few more for the 128g OP through the discounts, but I'm looking more at the 64g (with discounts).
For reference, I can get the S7 edge for ~379€ with Samsung's Cashback.

I wasn't able to order the zuk z2 pro in time before I had to go. But there is a silver lining for me. A company is having a deal here, the deal is that I trade in the sim card from another company and switch to them I get a phone of my choice half off. One of the choices is the s7, s7edge or the s8 and s8+. I've heard about the pink line problem just showing up out of nowhere is it really common and is there anything I can do to fix it in case it happens to me?. I just want everything to go smoothly for my first phone.

AliExpress is one of the biggest China online marketplaces. Doesn't mean that they won't gyp you but perhaps there is a slightly smaller chance that they will screw you.

I just bought a phone from them and I am waiting to see if I will buy from them again.

earpiece is shit anon, every single reviewer complains about it. It seems that the piezo-electric thingie as much as a step in the right direction to leave space for the screen it does a shit job with sound quality.
Basically a phone having problems to be just a phone.
Screen is far superior to the one of the Essential phone though. A shame it wasn't made with an AMOLED screen instead of the shit IPS one it has.

Okay /spg/ I've been out of the loop for quite some time and I'm in the market to buy a new telephone, possibly a smartphone
Previously my first and last smartphone was SGS2 I got right when it came out and I got it for about three or four years. Once the battery got too crappy I switched to an old blackberry bold and while I miss some features I definitely appreciate how it's mote phone like with keyboard and all - at one time when I was using a touch screen phone I refrained from sending a single text for almost two years since I found the experience so frustrating. Did rooting and custom roms but didn't find it too fun since I would rather have a device that just werks - not an iphone but something that doesn't require extensive debloating for it to run one one charge for more than a day.
Not sure what's on the market right now so I'd rather list some things I don't want
-non-removable battery
-no SD card slot
-sony
-chinkphone
-shit battery
-no headphone jack
-bloaty stock software like touchwiz was

what I think I'd like
-large but not absurdly large screen
-sturdy, can be thick
-I'd like a physical keyboard if at all possible
-good camera, within reason

I never really cared for 'apps' and such but I'd like it to be a comfortable enough device for mobile browsing. My last android was jellybean on SGS2 but I preferred slimkat over it with no gapps and fdroid only. I have an ipad2 I was given and I quite like it for browsing in bed and occasional reading but I never considered an iphone a real option since it has many things that are on my no-no list. Blackberry is pretty dead as far as I gather.
Any advice is appreciated, sorry for being uninformed.

Note 4

>speed
defiantly feels slower, really wish i had more ram, as some how im always using over 80% when im doing basic tasks.
>battery
replaced the battery because it was user serviceable, although i feel like the software is draining it more than when it was new.
>glitches
have a weird issue where when my phone reaches low battery it will go into a reboot loop. i can fix it by pulling the battery but other than that its alright

although i still enjoy my phone, i am ready to upgrade. Just waiting to save up more money or for my phone to just crap out completely.
>>
>>62236527
also forgot to mention that I would be most comfortable spending only around 300 eurobucks or so, I suppose up to 400 if it's really worth it.
Definitely doesn't have to be a current year phone

Because people expect $150 headphone quality from free headphones. Temper your expectations to something reasonable and they'll surprise you.

If you're looking for real sound quality $150-200 is the starting point and it only goes higher from there

Hardware failures happen. Be glad you bought from a company that actually honors the hardware warranty.
