>>

>>
>>62068387
X220 has a better keyboard and an infinitely better trackpoint, but you can transplant those onto an X230 for the massive iGPU improvement and allegedly better battery life.
>>
>>62068431
Why? The X220 is still more than enough for all the tasks you need a laptop for.
>>
>>62068387
It all comes down to a few things
-Keyboard: The X220 is the last generation with the old style keys. Starting with the X230, they started using chicklet keyboards. Personal preference
-Price: X220s are usually a little cheaper.
-Performance: Ivy Bridge (X230) is better than Sandy Bridge (X220)
-Customization: The X230 requires a BIOS and EC flash to modify anything. X220 only requires it for some things.

Hello, I am looking to buy a new laptop for university, and figured out that a thinkpad might be the best option. I am pretty sure that a a T-series thinkpad suits my needs.
Budget:>400
Location: Belgium

Should I use buy one from the US or go for one in Europe?

Thanks in advance.
>>
>>62068625

Whatever is cheapest. Germany seems to have an abundance of Thinkpads.

T420 or X220 with 9 cell battery + 6 cell battery slice is always comfy as fuck.
>>
>>62068387
with a xx20 you can use use 3rd party batteries

with an unlocked bios xx20 you can
use dual band AC card
disable Turbo Boost so I instantly get -10 C during cpu loads
switch alpm mode from slumber to partial if you got a ssd
disable intel ME features
modify active trip points for the fan
disable bios event log
set ram to 1866mhz

basically one click to flash a new bios
http://www95.zippyshare.com/v/rBVD1Bf6/file.html
and you're done.

>>
>>62070278
Not as good as a T- or X-series thinkpad then.
>>
>>62070281
It has replacable ram i think, atleast you can add ram.

As I said, it's a thinkpad 13" Gen 2 with 768ps from our college.

And we got them for free, so I think that's a great deal. (We get stipends for this via our government)
>>

Here's the website for it: http://www3.lenovo.com/au/en/laptops/thinkpad/thinkpad-13-series/ThinkPad-13-Windows-2nd-Gen/p/22TP2TX133E

I find it cool how I can choose between charging with USB-C and use the weird charger that comes with it.
>>
>>62070216
>But is it a good thinkpad?

I wouldn't even call it a real Thinkpad.
Lenovo is cheapening the brand with consumer orientated stuff like this.
>>
>>62068320
Shit. I want pepe on my laptop. I'm jealous
>>
>>62070216

looking at the lenovo site it seems like the base model would be breddy good for general school use and not much else. it seems a little expensive for the base model and quickly gets unreasonable once you add a dec processor and a little more ram.

like this anon said >>62070281
if it was free then use it as a schoolwork machine with a great battery and don't worry about how small your benis is
>>
>>62070346
Like before. Its not horrible but its not 11/10 ThinkPad quality
>>
>>62070161
>How shitty was their choice?

For $60 extra they could have upgraded from that 768p TN to a 1080p IPS.
It's especially shitty because now there will be a meme that Thinkpads have bad screens and everyone from your college will end up buying Macs because of it.

Other than that I don't know what I would have done with a similar budget.
L470 would have been great but it's more expensive.
>>
>>62070484
We get these from school. And the school buys them from the government.

The media and communication people can choose to get a macintosh, but they have to pay a hefty price of their own as well.

So you can choose to have a free laptop, or pay for a mac.
>>
>>62070519
At
>no cost to you
It's a good deal. If you have to buy one in the future...
>Don't get a Thinkpad 13
As there are much better options in the wild wild laptop west.
>>
>>62070519
I meant once your class graduates they will all dump Thinkpad and go for Apple instead.

Had they provided the better screen option there might have been some people who would stick with Thinkpads for the rest of the lives.
It's a missed opportunity from Lenovo who no doubt sponsors this deal by giving big discounts.

But the IT here did something really stupid. They made it so if you close the lid it turns off.

Everything on the PC is yours, your user is the admin on it and everything.

I was able to edit the register and some shit, but I don't think my class mates won't nother to do that.

I think they did it so if you are doing shit on the PC instead of listening to the teacher they can just close your lid and all your progress is lost (in games and in word)

>>62070969
a perfectly alright alternative if you can get a better price and don't feel the need to be a meme-ber of the thinkpad club. some things i've noticed with my 2570p vs my x220:

-super duper solid
-touchpad feels better, trackpoint not as good but very useable
-no middle mouse button sucks, but has emulation in linux via clicking both buttons at the same time
-keyboard layout sucks, chiclets keys are passable, not any worse than a macbook pro from that era
-tn panel is marginally better than the stock x220 tn, not as good as even the chinkiest counterfeit x220/30 ips replacement
-lol @ their "thinklight". fucking screen lights up the keys better
-swappable cpu is great. got a deal on a 3632qm and popped it in
-access panel RULES. swap parts and blow out dust all day
-onboard sound seems better
-bootable esata is great
not overly hard to set up an egpu, but x220 was more plug & play

might look like an overall win for an x220/30, but i still think the 2570p has a lot going for it as long as you are ok with no ips upgrade path and the keyboard. upgradeable cpu, dvd drive, raid 0, esata, etc can mean a lot to some people. at the end of the day it's arguing over the merits of old business laptops that sell for less than $200, so fuck it just buy one
>>
>>62068255
Just got my x230 in the mail, god the keyboard and trackpad is bad. I already have a x220 keyboard on order, but can the trackpad be changed? otherthan that it's a nice improvment over my old x201 (i5, this has a i7).

Have you tried replacing the thermal paste? It is a bit of a hassle, but it does work. You could also turn off turbo boost and run only at the base clock. This helps with load temperatures a lot more than idle though.

Pic related. This is what an X220's default thermal paste looks like after five years. Crusty and brittle.

Turbo Boost can be disabled in kernel, and disabling it reduces performance fairly significantly, at least on an i7 X220. If you have temperature problems, it may be better to install thermald, which will throttle at high temps, but you'll still get turbo boost overclock for average tasks.

Found out about libreboot the other day. Torn between the x60 and x200 tablets.

x60t sounds like it is more likely to actually disable intel management engine, but I want x64 and I can't seem to find one for sale with the L7400, the only x64 processor it came with. Also, apparently it's a crapshoot with getting a compatible screen. The only x60 tablets I can find with the x64 processor are sold by a website with libreboot already installed, and they want nearly $700USD for it.

x200t needs to be a SL-series processor from what I read, that's easy enough, but it seems more wizardry in the way it disables the intel management engine. I probably just don't understand it fully, I just get the impression that the x60 is more trustworthy.

And supposedly the librecore fork should be coming out with something this year, should I just wait for that? I really want the tablet meme.

that's not true, an i7 with turbo mode gets really hot especially on a x220. also turbo mode is kinda useless without c-states disabled if you think about it.

we're talking about running one core at +500mhz and +10W for a maximum of 28 seconds until the whole thing gets hot as fuck and throttled

every core at max base frequency and barely/never get throttled under normal circumstances (with a decent thermal paste and clean heatsink)

>an i7 with turbo mode gets really hot especially on a x220
Yes, for sustained tasks, but it doesn't get hot enough to throttle for short workloads.
Quick example - first make test file:
$ dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=1G count=5
5+0 records in
5+0 records out
5368709120 bytes (5.4 GB, 5.0 GiB) copied, 15.0416 s, 357 MB/s

Sha256sum w/ Turbo Boost enabled:
$ time sha256sum test
[redacted due to spam filter] test

real 0m35.658s
user 0m34.948s
sys 0m0.708s

And sha256sum with Turbo boost disabled (frequency now locked to 2.7 GHz max):
$ time sha256sum test
[redacted due to spam filter] test

real 0m42.471s
user 0m41.692s
sys 0m0.776s

That's a 20% or so decrease in performance for a single threaded task, which is expected as far as I can tell. I've tested for multi-threaded tasks, too, and performance decreases even more with turboboost disabled, down by ~25%.

I've never owned a laptop with anything higher than a 35 watt TDP CPU. How noisy/warm is that under load?
>>
Who else is as comfy as I am? I have an X40 which I've tweaked, it almost never even turns on the fan and runs for like 10 hours on a cheap chinese replacement battery.

I want to keep this thing forever.
>>
Why chinks are always the ones who creates mods and custom boards for Thinkpads?
I want a american designed Raven Ridge mobo for the X220.
>>

How good of a deal is this?
>>
>>62077236
Not much noisier than any other laptop. The Zbook runs dead silent for most of the time, and it won't make any noticeable noise unless I have multiple programs running. Only when I was rendering some 4K video in Kdenlive was the laptop loud, even then it wasn't much louder than any other laptop. When that video was rendering ( a 2minute clip, took 9 minutes to render) the left hand side keyboard did get pretty warm (maybe 50C) but it wasn't uncomfortable.
>>
>>62077214
>I've tested for multi-threaded tasks, too, and performance decreases even more with turboboost disabled
that sounds like bullshit tho because turbo mode applies to one core by design on sandy bridge cpu's.
also if I run a task that makes the cpu burst for 20 seconds every 2 minutes I really don't want my temps and noise to oscillate that badly like a chainsaw.
also what trully helps multicore performance is having hyperthreading disabled too.
you're better off with a desktop computer if you don't care for cool&quiet.
>>
i have a t520, the lower mouse buttons piss me off sometimes, they stick if there is any pressure at all under them. Aside from that, 9/10 hackintosh system

>that sounds like bullshit tho
I've run the tests myself, like I said, and it's not.
>because turbo mode applies to one core by design on sandy bridge cpu's
I tested what you claim, and you're mostly wrong. Webm related shows frequency of my CPU as it's under load: it appears one core will be at max frequency (3400 MHz), while all other cores are at 3200 MHz. Given that non-turbo frequency is 2700 MHz, that's still a 500-700 MHz higher clock on all cores, which explains the performance increase.
>what trully helps multicore performance is having hyperthreading disabled too
Except this is wrong, too - hyperthreading increases performance as far as I can tell on my X220, and thus I enable it.

>hyperthreading increases performance
hyperthreading does not increase multicore performance. a software that uses 4 threads will NOT benefit from hyperthreading. instead it contributes to temp increase.

>I tested what you claim, and you're mostly wrong. Webm related shows frequency of my CPU as it's under load
>quote from spec: The processor supports a Turbo mode where the processor can use the thermal capacity associated with package and run at power levels higher than TDP power for short durations. This improves the system responsiveness for short, bursty usage conditions.

and it gets hot faster and throttles thus proving my point, why would I want that in exchange for +20% in sha256sum tests? you now that trickles down to ~8% in practical day to day programs.
>>
>>62077740
>a software that uses 4 threads will NOT benefit from hyperthreading
No proof, no source. Your word means nothing without source/tests, while I've run with and without and found performance increase.
>quote from spec
Yeah, blah blah some generic Turbo Boost info. Kernel reports +3200 MHz on all cores, thus proving you wrong. I made a webm as proof, and also posted timings, but apparently that isn't enough for you.
>and it gets hot faster and throttles
It doesn't "get hotter", because when idle, turbo boost isn't enabled and CPU clocks down. In my original post >>62074089 I mention thermald. This daemon will clock down the CPU if critical temperatures are reached. In the event such temperatures (and I've also tested this), it first disables turbo boost to stock frequency (2.7 GHz in my case), and only throttles from there. So it basically acts as a automatic on/off control for Turbo frequency scaling, meaning there's literally zero downside to having turbo boost enabled. You get the benefits of increased clock speed when needed, and in the case of sustained CPU usage, it gets you down to stock non-turbo frequency first before any throttling.
>>
>>62077879
>when idle, turbo boost isn't enabled and CPU clocks down.
No proof, no source. Your word means nothing

see it's really easy to go full retard and tap out of an argument at my convenience and say "blah blah" when confronted with actual specs.

Just a heads up:
Trackpoint caps from banggood aren't that great, they're usable, but the rubber isn't as soft and it doesn't stick to the finger that well. The mold seems to be different compared to (what I assume is) original caps, so I guess they're knockoffs.

Anon.
More than half of /g/ doesn't even know what Intel ME is
Half of the other half doesn't care
And the rest wouldn't touch anything newer than core2duo

As for WiFi card, only the most autismo gives two shits about getting dual band ac and they can just go out and buy a soic clip for nothing considering how much a 7260 ac costs
The other people who actually care about hackintosh are already buying xx20s

Lastly can you even tell me benefits of using 1866 mhz ram that is not igpu related since you clearly don't care about it. Also considering 1866 mhz ram costs 80 dollars for a 8 GB kit don't you think they can't spend 6 dollars for a soic clip?

Now drop this "" hurrr you can't tell people what they need" bs when not one other person has replied to me saying "well fuck you anon I need my wifi card swap" or "kys I need my 1866 mhz ram"

I'm going to study compsci at uni, and need some advice. I currently have a pc(pic related) that is pretty capable. I'm going to keep it, but need a laptop. I was initially thinking of spending like 1000 for a dell inspiron, or dell xps. Then I thought maybe I can do gaming and heavy use on my desktop, and get a thinkpad for uni. Now I don't think I want something like a t420. I want something newer, yet with the same advantages that the t420 has over the modern overexpensive unreliable laptops. I like the modern look(the one after t430), and as I'm going to use it a lot, I don't think it's worth buying, for example, a t420 and have the cdrom and bulkiness as extra weight. Location is Netherlands, any recommendations?
