Just installed Linux Mint. It's a good choice for new users from what I've seen so far.
>>
OK so. Manjaro+openRC has been my recent fave go to for Linux because the architect installer is easy enough for me as a Linux noob to figure out, but I get to use AUR and make it relatively lean with minimal XFCE. But they've dropped it to move to Artix Linux now and merged with the systemD free Arch whatever it was called. And now from their page the install page is missing and only migration is left up. I wanted to do a base install but it's just a live ISO... I can boot that obviously but I have no idea where to go from there because it's a totally new distro and the regular Arch Linux installer guides all use systemd references. Where do I go from here cause I'd like to move to Artix and figure it out more but I really don't know what to search honestly. -_- tia

Anyone here use LXC (as opposed to LXD) in Debian (LXD isn't available in Debian, that's why)?

>>
>>61987917
The defaults just expose the kernel drivers via thin userspace library wrapper and let applications do with it what they will (ALSA), or provide a sound server that doesn't mess with EQ or effects by default (PulseAudio). PulseAudio has a bit of latency overhead, but is generally better for playback, and provides a very nice point and click interface for managing inputs, outputs, per-application volumes, and the like, called pavucontrol. I honestly miss pavucontrol when I have to use Windows. If you want to get really esoteric there's JACK, but JACK is just a lower latency audio server and uses the same ALSA kernel drivers anyway.

People recommend Pacaur over Yaourt for security correct? Like, it would check the MAKEPKG file first and make you look at it for any possible discrepancies, if I'm not mistaken.

That could also be done with Yaourt though.
Granted, like you said, there's more interaction but that's the point of installing software as you wouldn't want to install something that would compromise security.

Yeah all the comments are positive and says it works with the mainline drivers. Dunno if it needs to install the non-free firmware but if it does their user manual for compiling the driver for older kernels mentions a ralink chipset so that'll be the firmware to install from your package manager if it doesn't work out of the box.

Sounds kind of crazy to do on a tiling wm but I actually do this in i3. You can switch to another workspace and grab something and drop it in another workspace.

>fullscreen browser on workspace 1
>fullscreen file manager of workspace 2

>alt+2
>grab file
>alt+1
>drop it

It's actually a pretty nice function to be quite honest

On my thinkpad t450 running xubuntu trying to fix one problem (touchpad randomly stop working), I updated my system. Now my keyboard doesn't work.

Luckily the touchpad does work, and I managed to get into grub (the keyboard works here, and in BIOS) and tried to boot the older kernel (4.10.0-30), but the keyboard didn't work here either.

I can login and start up a terminal session, and enter commands using the built-in onscreen keyboard.
I just tried
sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade

but predictably that didn't do anything (0 upgraded, installed, or removed) as I had probably just done that before keyboard stopped working.
What do I do here?

I don't have any external keyboards to try with.

You could use a char map or something but no other operating system uses the same encoding as windows so the alt codes that you are familiar with from windows would lead to different characters. You may want to look into setting up the compose key which is better anyway:

The prevalence of GNU/Linux systems among consumers for desktop use is growing every day, and it takes positivity, support, and a little hard work to introduce the GNU/Linux operating system to all of those who wish to take pleasure in the GNU/Linux experience. All you elitists here are just edgy kids trying to mimic the perceived "elitism" from tech sites. They have actual _reasons_ to be the way they are. Not just to be a dick to some random person who's happy they installed Gentoo. If you weren't that happy the first time you installed a source based distro then that alone makes you a massive wanglord and I have no respect for you.

I'm still pissy over that Manjaro-openrc thing. One of the great things about manjaro was that it didn't require you to spend autistically long hours at night in order for you to have all your drivers, literally the only operating system to do that. The only driver i needed to install was the wacom stuff, and even that was a easy endeavor. But instead of porting over that ease-of-use, they decide to go with base arch, which, if you wanted to install base arch, you'd probably know how to change the startup manager outright anyway, which makes this fork pointless e-peen garbage. Why the fuck would they do this aside from some shitty neofetch boasting?

Food for thought, though. I was looking up statistics and sure, market share of GNU/Linux is low, but it has doubled in the past decade. Double of not a lot is still not a lot, but looking at how many more PCs there are in the compared to ten years ago, a liberal estimate could say over 50 million people use GNU/Linux today. Also interesting, some charts I looked at, it spiked up around when Microsoft automatically upgraded people to Windows 10. So Microsoft's idiocy does have an effect.

You're being absurd. First, like Manjaro, Artix is going to be using Calamares for installation, or so I've heard. Second, installing Pamac isn't difficult at all. It's going to be fine.

i installed arch linux and downloaded firefox and it only loads certain websites. can't find consistent information on how to fix it so i'm going to fucking reinstall i guess.

Hey /g/ents need your help. I tried to install void x64 musl on both virtualbox and actual hardware and i'm getting the same problem on both:
>install xorg(meta)
>install dwm
>dwm -> dwm:cannot open display
>exec dwm -> dwm:cannot open display + exiting session
>tried i3 same shit
startx starts only when twm is used, but as soon as i add dwm(i3) or exec dwm(i3) line to xinitrc it simple hangs with black screen, after that i can't switch to another tty and ctrl+alt+sysrq+k causes kernel panic (on virtualbox it doesn't even do anyting).

Is Linux Mint too different from Raspbian?
I need to set up a LAMP server + Wordpress on a Raspberry but I don't have one at hand right now.
I do have a Linux Mint install I could use though.
I assume the process won't be too different considering both are Debian based.
>>
>>61996010
void is source based right? Is it possible you either forgot to install video drivers, or you built your video drivers prior to building/installing a new kernel?
If so just rebuild the video driver. You need to rebuild drivers after installing a new kernel

do you have your gtk-greeter installed?

He didn't mention using LightDM anywhere.

this. Any GLAMP tutorial that works for recent debian should work with mint or raspbian.

I guess it's not source based, it's like arch without systemd, drivers on pic and i didn't build any kernels.
>>61996037
nope
>>
>>61996074
I don't know, but I'd look into possible issues with video driver installation/configuration, see if there's documentation for it in void and that you didn't skip anything.
Other than that it might just be time to ask on a more knowledgeable site

I've had someone access my machine remotely for the past 3 weeks.
Checked up on my Total Network Monitor to find this little leech in my system from coderanger.net
Looking to install a Linux distro with GUI, so the girlfriend can use the computer, & I need it to be compatible with AMD cards for mining alt-coin. Any help would be appreciated

/g/ (generally) hates Ubuntu partly BECAUSE it's for newfags, hence "Noobuntu".

I haven't heard many people seriously shit on boonto here. I think you're confusing general 4chan banter with 'hate'.

I need to install linux on a machine with a 1080 and no gpu on the cpu. Debian stretch specifically. This will not likely work out of the box as the drivers are not free. How can I get the driver I need into the installation file? Do I need figure out how to build my own kernel or what? I have other machines, laptops that work out of the box with major linux distros that I can build with.
>>
>>61997700
you install the distro as usual then deal with 1024x768 till you install the nvidia drivers.
>>
make new_thread -j1
>>
>>61997714

Will that work? Last time I tried this with a ubuntu/gnome distro noveu or whatever the open one is called just locked the system up I couldnt even boot a live cd. Should I install without the live cd ive always used those for convenience.
>>
>>61997731

Not the same machine and it was a different generation of gpu but noveu just said it didnt recogonize chip and couldnt get passed it.

Ill just try to the debian installation image. The current Debian release is stretch right that was just the working name?
>>
>>61997731
It should.
Problems might rise if the libre nouveau driver tries to operate an unsupported card, this can be avoided by editing your OS menu item in grub and adding 'nomodeset' to the end of the line starting with 'linux'

No, Void is more of a fortnightly driver. Not sure about the currently best daily driver, but if you want a 3rd day driver, go for Tanglu Linux. For a 7th day driver look into either ConnochaetOS or Linux Mangaka.
