>>

I put in an SSD to replace the HDD it came with. I might upgrade the RAM to 8Gb but probably won't because 4Gb is enough for my needs. I will buy an ultrabay caddy to expand the storage. I was going to replace the keyboard, wasn't sure how I'd like the chiclet, but the keyboard is great. I'd say it's better than the non-chiclet on my old Latitude.

Anybody here experiment with solar chargers before?
I might find myself /out/ a lot next year and living in a cabin/campsite is a possibility. The plan is to have my X230 with me to keep busy and do some paperwork. With the 9cell battery (and a spare) that should be good to spend an hour each night before having to top off the batteries. I'll bring a loaded e-reader too but thought it'd be neat to download a bunch of PDF's, articles and Wikipedia pages and junk for when there's no internet. Obviously will load some movies too.

Is the T430 worth the price if I'm upgrading from an X220? Can it run TF2 well? (it's the only intensive-ish game I still play, mostly because I hate myself) I'd be using this on a dock as a main PC since I need to travel a shitload. Should I just upgrade my actual desktop I don't sue much anymore or take the plunge?

My main productivity uses are artfagging with KRITA and writefagging with a text editor.
>>

>is there anything too 'blast-from-the-past-y'?
SO-DIMM DDR1, 1GB RAM tops (512MBx2).
IDE HDD, 9mm one.
USB 1.1.
Cardbus Type ll, you can add a USB 2.0 port this way.
16MB VRAM onboard GPU, dont expect run anything with this.

It will be a Linux Text machine.

Aren't the 40 series rally shitty? Also really expensve? This is based on hearsay. I'm a writefag and I goddamned hate chicklet keyboards and I was considering putting a 20 series keyboard in the 30 series, bu I used a T430s keyboard once and it was actually really nice. is the keyboard quality consistent on the later models?
>>61909150
Kinda sorta. I've only ever gotten source games to run correctly under windows on this laptop for some fucking reason and it seems to be a problem nobody else has, not even my friends who use the same laptop and the same distro.
>>
>>61909232
>Aren't the 40 series rally shitty?
The shitty part is the keyboard layout, soldered U processors (unless you get a t440p) and the touchpad (which can be replaced with the T450 touchpad). You'll also get a more modern platform and the option to have a FHD IPS screen.

>Also really expensve?
Nah they're around the same price as a typical t420 or t430 on ebay and even cheaper on rare ocassions.

>is the keyboard quality consistent on the later models?
Yes but i do agree that the new layout is worse than the old keyboard layout.

Sup friends, looking to buy a new laptop for on the go photo editing.

Budget: Under $300, cheaper the better I suppose but if it's worth it I could shell out the $300.
Location: US
Size: Anything really, preferably something smaller
Performance: Anything that can run Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop smoothly
Other requirements: Getting deeper and deeper into photography and I want to start editing my stuff as I travel instead of waiting until I get home. My only real requirement is having lightroom run smoothly while editing 10/20+ photos at once.
>>
>>61910030
I'm not even the guy with the mexican keyboard. This was just a reference.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vh8F-r25TWc
>>
>>61910071
Translation about what he said:

Howdy pall, how is the T430 performance, i know the difference is huge but what do you think?
>Actually i have a T420 and i been thinking about buying a X200

Reminder to mexanons to speak in English, this is not /v/.
>>
>>61910061
That's an utterly terrible request really. For photo editing you need a lot of screen real estate, good resolution, good colors. You might find a large Thinkpad within that budget but none of them would have a screen even remotely usable for photo editing.

>Getting deeper and deeper into photography
>lightroom run smoothly while editing 10/20+ photos at once
That's nice and all but if you buy something $300-tier you're gonna be shit out of luck. Best you could find is probably 30 series, maybe 40 series if the machine is in bad condition. These are most likely powerful enough and again, their screens are garbage.

>preferably something smaller
If that's not a priority, you might have some limited options but you're most likely not gonna get them for $300.
15" models are really your only way to go here. Get a W series or a T series with a W series screen. With either of these options you want to be around an outlet most of the time though because if you're working with Photoshop battery life is going to be shit.
>>
>>61910145
>These are most likely powerful enough
What I meanst was
>These are most likely not powerful enough
At least not if you really want to work on 20 photos at once
>>
I was just browsing the Internet on my T420 and suddenly I see a puddle of clear, light brown fluid pooling by the right side of the laptop. It doesn't have any odour and doesn't appear to be acidic (my hands haven't fallen off yet). I pick it up and the entire underside is soaked with this fluid. Immediately unplugged and took out battery.

What the fuck is this, /g/? Could it be possible that something was spilled on it ages ago and it only now drained out? I took it apart to clean it when I first bought it and saw no signs of anything like this. Would appreciate any ideas as to what this could be.

What do you guys think of this for a cs student? I'll be running Elementary OS. Other than schoolwork, I mostly just shitpost and read on it. The resolution is bad at 1280 x 800 (WXGA), but if I'm not playing games or watching movies, should I be able to manage? Here's the full specs:

I dropped and broke my Yoga 14 under warranty, and Best Buy didn't have any toi replace it with it, so they tried to give me a newer, non thinkpad yoga, but I was able to get them to give me a gift card for $900 instead, but the new yoga thinkpad is ~$1300 and I can't afford the extra $400, so I'm just looking for something cheaper and use what's leftover for whatever else I ever need.

There's very little guarantee of quality on certified refurbished models. All it means is that they have all the parts they need to work, you'll still need to clean them out and replace thermal paste to fix temps. Not to mention DDR3L is reasonable inexpensive, just pick up an 8GB stick for ~$40 and have 12GB.

I'd totally get a T420 if I can upgrade it's specs. The CPU is alright but the GPU is terrible, and the T430's HD4000 vs HD3000 is a big boost. I thought Intel graphics were integrated into the CPU. Is this true? Could I upgrade the CPU in a T420 to a CPU that supports Intel HD4000 graphics?

One of the neat things about the x60 is the fact that you can go full freedom on it. If you're into that then go with parabola, and for God's don't use the graphical livecd, it gave me a ton of issues when I used it. One thing to note is that the x60 came with 2 (I think) different wifi cards. The Intel one needs nonfree firmware, so if you have that then keep in mind parabola won't play well unless you replace the card. You can get replacement ones on eBay for very cheap, so that isn't a huge issue. I would definitely recommend going with a minimal install, i3/bspwm/openbox should work well. It's a fun laptop and should serve you well.

While on the topic does anyone know a reliable seller of batteries for the x60? I have 3 of the fuckers but no working battery so they are currently just sitting around

Literally don't remember what the fuck I did to my T420. gave my L460 to my brother for college. Just won an eBay auction for a Thinkpad 13 BNIB for about €360, roudly sporting 4GB of RAM and an i3 7100U. Decided at that price it was worth giving it a go
>need some sort of ThinkPad because I'm used to the keyboard and trackpoint
>keyboard + not a lot of weight + not a lot of money
>have a decent desktop for shoopin, gaymen and other things that require an actual computer

I will let you all know how it goes
>>
>>61922498
I'm seeing about 28-30 dollars as the average.

It sucks, because they feel so nice but they run so crappy.
>>
I got a T430 from an guy whose career appears to specialize in networking. Is there a way to verify it won't have any tricks when it connects to my wifi? I'm under the impression the bios for the T430 has an easily accessible backdoor.
>>
There's an x120e for $30 locally. Looks like it's in near perfect condition and 4gb of ram.
Bad idea to get it and put a tiny distro like Puppy Linux and use it to shitpost?

My t410 is reporting a fan error then crashes. It didn't do this earlier when I had it docked, but I took it on my trip and it won't start.
>>
>>61923223
Take it apart and see if the fan cables aren't connected properly. If the fan just won't work at all, it might be time to buy a new one. ;(
>>
>>61905344
Libreboot it
>>
>>61923269
Well fuck, great time to breakdown right when I go on vacation. Guess I'm glad I bought a x220t, but I wasn't planning on using that to replace my t410 at all. I'll have to find a screw driver and check it out.
>>
>>61923342
The fan is connected to the heatsink, and they're usually different between models. I doubt a X220t fan will work with a t410, but I'm uncertain.
>>
>>61922947
Looks good, but the processor is slower than the one in regular T430. No trackpoint buttons may also be a deal breaker for some, but you can probably replace it. Up to you, I guess.
>>
>>61923423
I don't mean swap the fans, I mean just switching to the X220t, while I try to fix the fan on the T410. I'm hoping the fan just got loose, or I may need a fan replacement, or even worse losing my t410.
>>
>>61923827
I doubt you'll lose your t410 entirely because of a fan issue, these things are praised for being durable! Hope you have luck!
>>
>>61923853
We'll see. I just wanted to play snes games on cloverOS, but fixing the laptop will have to be my entertainment when I go to the hotel.

If you lived your entire life being ignored and ghosted by girls and suddenly had one acknowledge your existence, you'd probably be at a loss for words too.
He can easily salvage his situation anyways.
>>

Thanks for the support, but I've hardly spent my list ignored by girls, I have a gf anyways.

But I will go back there and see if I can strike up a conversation, she seemed like a good person to just be friends with.

I want one of the X series that I can draw on with the pen - but so far it doesn't look like all of them twist around like I thought, like this X220.
https://www.amazon.com/Lenovo-ThinkPad-12-5-Inch-Notebook-Professional/dp/B00666T9VI/ref=pd_cp_147_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00666T9VI&pd_rd_r=149BMAFSNZTQ9497JHDR&pd_rd_w=MvKeu&pd_rd_wg=e80GX&psc=1&refRID=149BMAFSNZTQ9497JHDR
Am I missing something? Are only some of them tablets?
Which models should I look at? I like drawing and programming.
>>
>>61924851
There is a tablet and non-tablet version of the X220 and X230.
>>
>>61924925
What's the point of the non-tablet x2*0 over the T series?
>>
>>61924943
Coreboot or libreboot, also a different series of attachments you can decide between
>>
>>61924943
smaller, lighter, longer battery life, X-series are considered "ultraportables", 12" vs 14" or 15.6"

The tablet version compared to non-tablets are fatter and bulkier and doesn't have an extended battery option.
>>
>>61925006
>>61925016
Should I still try and grab the tablet version then, or just use my wacom tablet awkwardly on my laptop?
I haven't really looked into the different boot options.
>>
>>61924943
>>61925006
And an inch or so smaller in length and width so it's easier to travel with and use on airplane trays, etc.
More importantly, that sweet IPS display.

>>61925045
the non-tablet is better in every way except for the pen/touch part and the tablet is guaranteed IPS screen

but even the tablet is not that great for drawing since you're stuck with the 1366x768 resolution and the pen is bad as well, also the IPS screens have burn-in problems
>>
>>61925045
I don't know how the touch screen performs but the single swivel latch is a weak point imo, the screens have some wobble. Double hinges is nice.
>>
>>61925228
ahh yeah I'm reading reviews between that, the HP 27*0, and the latitudes that do the same thing. sounds shitty, but I'm not sure how shitty I should expect it to be - I doodle on my samsung tablet fine even if it's not great
>>
>>61922734
i'm not an expert but i would reinstall os. if you want to use that same os then i would install a firewall and monitor it really closely for about a week.

Why hasn't anyone done fanart for any lenovo thinkpad series laptop yet?
Here's what I'm thinking, I can't draw but I can imagine.
Straight long black hair. Pale, tall, gorgeous. Probably in business or the typical maid attire. Green eyes.
what are you guys thinking?

>>
>>61925875
there was someone a while ago who drew their own rendition of an X-series, T-series, and W-series. (and X-series tablet maybe? don't remember) but it was basically that, black and red accents

green+blue accents would be nice as well but they don't really go together
>>
>>61925944

I know you can pay people to do good artwork and stuff but I don't really have the money to do that (saving up for another thinkpad :> )

Is an X201 with an i5 and an ssd worth the $100 I'll save over a comparable X220 or are they slow as shit nowadays? I just want a small secondary laptop for browsing and video streaming. I like the screen ratio, and I would not be opposed to upgrading the wifi card and ram if I needed to.
