This is a thread for headphones and audio technology. Here are some basic rules

That's it. Also some fundamental truths about audio

THD measurements are not a reliable indicator of audibility:
http://gedlee.azurewebsites.net/Papers/Distortion_AES_I.pdf
http://gedlee.azurewebsites.net/Papers/Distortion_AES_II.pdf
> In our next paper we will show that .01% THD of one type of nonlinear system can be perceived as unacceptable while 10% THD in another example is perceived as inaudible. Even one of these simple examples is sufficient to invalidate THD as a viable metric for discussion of the perception of distortion. Furthermore, 1% THD is not at all the same as 1% IM, but we will show that neither correlates with subjective perception.
>These results supported the skepticism that THD and IMD metrics were poor predictor of subjective perception of sound quality ratings.
Furthermore:
http://asa.scitation.org/doi/full/10.1121/1.4984044
>Research has suggested that non-linear properties of headphone responses have little effect

I just own audio technica m50s, HD600 and HE-400.

I prefer to judge a pair of headphones by how they actually sounds to me, rather than from a graph that does not entirely depicts how the they actually sounds in real life.

of those I've listed, the HD600 are the more even and linear of all, and yes, while I agree that their bass is somewhat subdued, I don't think it's fair to describe them as "lacking".

I would add that they are extremely responsive to good amping.

Friendly reminder :) to give EQ a shot and always buy an amp that leaves you enough power to. It has me second guessing if I really want another pair of headphones now.
I'm sure they're not really neutral now but they are far more neutral than they were before. The treble spike never bothered me in the first place but the bass is so much better with these settings. It seems so much more competent and it might even be extending lower as the 990's bass falls off hard below 50hz.
The mids are also slightly more prominent.
Seriously just spend a few hours with your eq of choice and a good FR measurement of your headphone and see what you can do.

>>
>>61891500

>>
>>61891498
What do you think of the people that hate on them for that ringing at whatever frequency? I don't care about the build quality, they go on my head and then on their stand and willl never leave my desk.
Every time I mention them someone responds with this scary looking FR that has a huge spike in it.
I really want the m1060 and I really want them to be good but as it stands I think I would take the he400 over it because of all the negative feedback in this thread regarding them.
>>
>>61891577
Headphones can't compete against a good speaker setup. Not enough knowledge for recommendations, though; just ask around /hpg/
>>
>>61891616
Seconding this. $1000 could get you a pretty killer setup from audiogon.
>>
>>61891577
Speakers have the inherent problem that small positional changes can alter frequency response, sometimes significantly. Headphones in general have better and more consistent frequency response performance but they have inferior imaging.
>>
>>61891658
Hence good speaker setup
>>
>>61891609
Pretty sure revision 2 dealt with this issue, that being said the he-560 or he400i would both be good choices depending on what your source is.
>>
>>61887874

Crossfade Wireless 2s are pretty nice, if you can stomach the price and more Low-friendly sound signature.
>>
Currently have HE400i's. I like them mostly except theres a noticable midrange dip. Female vocals especially sound distant. Would HD600's give the more intimate mids I'm looking for? My only reservation is that I had HD598's before and a few other dynamics and hated the mid bass hump and muddy bass.
>>
>>61891786
Yes, but you're going to lose out on the bass
>>
>>61891786
Yes, they would. The HD600 is anything but muddy and has amazing midrange performance.
>>
Hi guys, I know this is a headphone general and it seems theres some kind of war going on currently, but I was wondering what would be the better buy.
I'm going to be going off to college residence soon, which means I'm going to have to ditch my massive old Technics floor speakers, leaving me with some crappy JVC bookshelf speakers my dad thrifted years ago. Im thinking of replacing them with something nicer since they don't have a big floor speaker pair to hide behind. I was browsing the classifieds and found two really pristine speakers near me that I've heard some really good things about from some research.
The two speakers I'm looking at are a pair of Koss M90 Plus speakers and a pair of Realistic Minimus 7 speakers (Made in Japan). They're both pretty cheaply available at 60 and 50 dollars respectively. Both appear to be in great condition (the best of any Minimus 7s I've seen on the website both over and under the price) and I've messaged both of the owners about the condition of the cone foams, thought I'm still awaiting a response, and they both look quite nice in the pictures, but I bet we all know pictures can be deceiving, eh?
Unfortunately my receiver/amplifier is definitely not portable, so I wouldn't be able to test them out. Judging by their descriptions and other items for sale both users appear to be vivid audiophiles who know their shit, so I'm trusting their information.
Any recommendations to which one I should go with? Is there any other speakers that often go for under 100 used I should consider?
>>

Ugh you mother fuckers. I've been shopping for another pair of headphones for a while now and you make the HD600 sound so perfect but I want a nice closed back that I might even be able to use on the bus.
It's so hard to pick a pair of headphones when $300 is a ton of money to you and is the only thing you'll be buying for the whole year.
I just know that no matter what I buy I'll be stuck thinking I could have gotten more for my money buying a different model.

Any AMP& DAC combo for a poorfag? I was looking at the Schitt Fulla 2 and being the poorfag i am plan to buy better headphones off eBay , fuck the CB-1's , didn't know they were 32 ohms until it was too late, also have a LG V20 so i can't even use high impendence mode for the CB-1s

Tl;dr good cheap AMP&DAC combo with some bitching about the CB-1s

You can get them used for $200 or so. That leaves you $100 to buy an HD280 or m40x for portable use. Just keep an eye out on eBay.

>Is multibit a meme?
The very short answer is yes.
The less short is that is signal output is inferior in every possible way compared to the standard Modi 2. However, it is still arguably "good enough" that no sound issues are expected with the so-called "multibit".

A longer answer can be given on request.

I'm just trying to decide whether to upgrade from the Schiit Stack. I've heard over and over that there's no difference, but if that's the case why aren't people running TOTL headphones on O2/ODAC and Modi/Magni. I find it hard to believe that ALL of them are blindly pissing away money and that there's at least some merit there.

>running TOTL headphones on O2/ODAC and Modi/Magni
People do that. They aren't always visible, and they usually aren't the ones posting endlessly on Head-Fi, Reddit, 4chan. and in the conventional audiophile forums.

There are many reasons why people spend the way they do. Some people have to have "the best", whether or not it directly affects their own experience. You can see this happen sometimes when a high-profile reviewer praises or pans a product, and drives the aftermarket prices crazy. Plenty of people refuse to even consider anything that is not expressly a flagship product.
Other do it for function. The device does more, so owners justify the expense with added features.
There is the aesthetic and the finish of these products. They can be lavish and cut from exotic materials. Sometimes they even built in a more robust manner.

It's not just being fooled by auditory tricks anyway.
>>
>>61891809
I'd go with the koss speakers. Not that the minimus are bad but they really need a sub, the koss should be okay.
>>
>>61891973

How would the Sony XB950N1 fare against the MDR-1000X? If there's anything better within a $230-$300 price range, I prefer punchy bass (not synthetic and not so much that it drowns out other sounds) good mids and some bright, but not sibilant highs. One other priority would be noise cancelling, a closed back and something comfortable so they don't become a nuisance. Are ones that have the ability to improve audio quality by using aux cords a more better option? (Hi-Res Audio with Sony headphones)

Hello all. I'm interested in buying a new set of headphones and was looking at either the Audio-Technica ath-ad700x or the Beyerdynamic dt 880 chrome version. I'm leaning more towards the ad700x since I have Fidelio l1's for when I want to enjoy bass, but I can't find many reviews on the chrome version of the dt 880 chrome but Zeos, and he said that they are different from normal dt 880s. Would I need an amp for the chrome dt 880s since they are 250 ohms compared to the 700x's 38 ohms? Thanks.
>>
>>61894343
The DT 880s may sound a bit bright, depending on who listens to them, but they are comfy. AD700Xs if you want to play it safe, but they lack bass and may not fit people with smaller heads

I took a peek at The Wirecutter and I'm currently considering the Oppo PM-3. I'm also considering Fostex at a similar price range, or maybe something from Denon. I really like the aesthetics of lacquered wood. Or wood at all. If I had the budget I'd consider LCD-2 or LCD-3s, considering their reputation for bass. I'm not after fart canons though.

>Past headphones
Beyerdynamic DT 880 250 ohm, Massdrop Hifiman HE-350

Out of the two, I prefer the Beyerdynamics. The Hifimans sound tinny or shrill. Kind of hissy. I'm not sure if it's because I need a proper DAC or what, but they're very disappointing. In comparison, the Beyers have much nicer bass and sound better in all ways.

Primarily I'll be using them for vidya, voice chat, and movies/anime. Music genres would be Electronic/Industrial, Metal, among others.

Plenty of headphones in the higher end will run fine off of your PCs 3.5mm Jack on either the front or the back (the green one). I don't know what your budget is, but the status audio cb-1 and ath-m40x are great starts that are also low impedence (meaning they'll work with your computer without a dac/soundcard/headphone amp.

You can never go wrong with Yamaha. Great choice overall.

That being said, email emotiva and see if they have any certified refurbished products in stock (full 3 year warranty and basically mint condition).

Either one is a good choice if you need active noise cancelling. That being said, CIEMs offer better noise isolation but they take weeks to make.
>>
>>61898695
I know they will work fine, my question is rather if the sound quality increase between high end and low end headphones will be noticeable.

Honestly I've got no clue about sound, and idea how much difference sound chip makes.
>>
>>61898728
For the most part, dacs are transparent and there's no difference between them. Amplifiers are only different when theyre too weak to drive higher impedence headphones. That's why I recommended lower impedence ones.

I'd say there would be no increase in sound quality as long as you were driving low impedence headphones.

Besides, I have nothing to change in my main setup now so I need to buy something audio related now and then, as long as it's cheap.

Same here. The only thing I don't like is they are not noise cancelling but otherwise they've been great
>>
>>61885842
I'm in the same boat as you. The only concern I found was the cables seem prone to damage.

I bought a pair of mdr7506's years ago and they were my favorite headphones.
They were comfy, fit my head just right, and sounded good.
My friend lost them and now I need some new headphones.
I want to try something else, but I can't convince myself to get something I might like less.
Are there anything similar to them?

There bass and treble are more balanced, dude. The last pads I had made the treble and sub-bass way too loud. This is objectively better than any of the replacement pads you can get, the only thing it might be worse than is broken-in stock pads.

Sure. Measure it and upload frequency response graphs here.
I'm not denying that there are ways to make headphones sound better, but putting socks over fucking cans is not one of them. You are muffling sound with this shit, it's dumb as fuck.
Whatever, it's your headphones and you can enjoy them however you want, but don't put this retarded shit here as some kind of """lifehack""".
/hpg/ has enough retards and shitposters as it is.

I bought mine in the first run last year.

holy shit, having to use my brothers old 558s while waiting on a replacement cable for my hd25s, how does anyone actually use these pieces of shit? the audio is absolute horseshit for music, so fucking muddy and overdone.

If you're that upset about tripfags, you can use 4chanX to remove trips and make everyone ananymoose

SNAPHEISER! SNAP CITY!

>YFW HD650 MASTER RACE
NEVER SNAPPED YET :^)
>>

And even if they snap, just replace the band. The value is in the drivers, not the thing that holds them to your ears.
>>
>>61891107
i have 518s and there's no way they'd ever snap under normal use. the 600s on the other hand...

what are the over ear, open backed equivalents of the Shure SE215?
>>
>>61905486
Agree. $300 price tag shouldn't guarantee good build quality anyway. Actually HD600 are so good I'm more than happy to pay my Snapheiser masters extra for headband replacements.
It's actually a good thing since it helps me to support my favorite company.

i know you're trolling but i hate how this is acceptable anyways

Anyone tried opening a Fiio X3ii before?
It has two tiny, round silver things that look like screws next to the USB port but I'm not sure what type they are, if they're screws at all.
Fiio never publishes this shit and tells everyone to contact support

Yes
Brainwavz earpads are usually referred to as HM5 since that's the headphones model Brainwavz makes.

Thoughts on HD518s?
Just purchased a pair for $25, what should I expect coming from my loved 600s?

They look to be pentalobe screws, not sure what size but you can get a set of bits or screwdrivers for pretty cheap.
