So I've got a T440p coming in later this week with these specs:
>intel core i7 4600m 2.9ghZ
>8gb ram
>500gb hdd
>1600x900 monitor

I've also got a new hdd (2tb) coming to upgrade the stock one. Aside from that and the screen, is there anything else I should consider upgrading?

What specific model of FHD screen do you all recommend for me to buy? Looking at the FRU list on this model's parts list is a bit confusing for me cuz idk what to get.

Also how do i check if a T400 uses CFL or LED without touching it?
>>
>>61809586
if you can get a used card for free i feel an egpu setup can make sense. otherwise youre putting money into a project that might as well be a budget desktop build. bug your friend for his 750/960/whatever next time he upgrades. as for actual performance, shit that runs *okay* on igpu (new vegas) will do great with an egpu. something beefier like prey or overwatch that won't even start on the igpu will run *fairly well* on an egpu at medium settings

The X220 can use an IPS screen unlike the TN cancer on the T420 and some models have usb3.0, meanwhile the T420 can use three drives, has an upgradeable processor and has a 1600x900 screen.

I have one day to decide whether to buy a t440p or an x230t

The purpose is university work - coding, doc processing, taking notes; and reading pdf's for hours every day on a train.

I love the screen size, toughness and socketed cpu of the t440p.
I love the multi-orientation, touchscreen, and IPS display of the x230t; the stylus could be extremely useful for notetaking, too.

Something tells me the x230t is more suited to my use case.. but I'm worried about the screen size. 12.5" is pretty damn small.

Can anyone comment on this? Is there anything I should know about the x230t?

I recently bought a T530 and I'm trying to install an SSD and get the data transferred over. I'm having some trouble doing this though. I know this is not really a specific Thinkpad issue, but if you could give me some advice, it would be hugely appreciated. I have outlined the details in greentext:

>I plugged in a USB 1TB external HDD, which I then formatted to NTFS
>Using Macrium Reflect, I cloned my internal HDD to the external HDD; I checked the contents of the external HDD to ensure that this had taken place.
>After shutting down the computer, I removed my internal HDD and replaced it with a blank 120GB SSD formatted to NTSF (like the external HDD)
>With an SSD installed and with the external HDD still connected via USB, I turned on the computer, pressing F1 to enter BIOS.
>I navigated to 'Startup', then 'Boot' and moved the relevant external HDD to the top of the 'Boot Priority Order' list. I then saved the changes and exited.
>The computer then automatically opens the 'Boot Menu' and provides me with a list of 4 boot options. I select the relevant external HDD. After pressing 'Enter', the computer immediately brings up the same boot menu. I select the same external HDD again.
>After this, the computer goes to blank screen and nothing else happens. I've let it sit for 10 minutes to see if it's booting really slow, but no luck.

I'm sure there's something I'm missing. I'm not super great with computers.

Cloning a mounted disk is almost universally discouraged - especially with a system drive. It is technically possible, but will likely result in compromised copies.

The best thing to do if no further drives are available, is to boot into a liveCD or liveUSB environment (OS running from RAM), leaving all drives free to be cloned/manipulated safely.

Personally, I use Clonezilla as included in PartedMagic as included in Ultimate Boot CD version 533. There are newer versions of PartedMagic, but they are no longer free.

don't know a thing about t440p, but x230t's screen has burn-in problem. battery could also be better - it supports only 3 and 6 cell batteries (while x230 can use 9 cell ones). 6 cell version also sticks out from the laptop

i bought it for coding and pdf reading, and it fits my use case perfectly. 6 cell battery lasts for ~6 hours (with ssd). burn-in is not noticeable on lighter backgrounds/themes
>>
>>61809854
nah, I'd recommend waiting for a FHD upgrade kit that works this time around, get an i7 quad core like the i7 36xxQM ones, 16GB of RAM and a beefy new battery, then finally put in an mSATA SSD and a HDD, such a sick combo imo, the mSATA SSD for applications, music, OS and a few videos and the HDD for your other big files.

Most monitors will have a "burn-in problem" if you have them displaying the exact same thing for a very long time at high brightness, particularly if it's a big contrast right next to another thing. Usually not permanent, though.

Would an X200 tablet be a good alternative to something like a surface pro if I'm looking for something to take notes on for grad school classes and probably also do some programming? I'm mainly worried about the latency of the stylus making the writing experience garbage
>>
>>61815590
It's basically a netbook. If you're fine with netbooks, go for it. I just got to inform you that for the same price you could get an infinitely better X220 or X230 with a 12" screen and a proper 2.5GHz i5.

Proper Thinkpads are T series, W series (later renamed to P), and X2xx series.
>>
>>61815636
>latency
ThinkPad tablets are pretty good in that regard. The screen is crap compared to the surface though. On the other hand, used ThinkPads are a lot cheaper than a surface.
>>
>>61815590
Well it's certainly among the smalles and lightest Thinkpads. The build quality is not on par with the regular T or X series but the price seems to be at least semi OK for Europe. If you get this keep in mind that it doesn't feature the real Thinkpad keyboard. The real one is better.

I used one of these in school a few years back. It's OK for shitposting but do yourself a favor and at least buy the i3 version. Celeron is trash.
>>
X230 tablet with i7-3520M for 400 dollars, is it a good deal?
>>61815590
I am polishpoor, so I would presume my perspective is similar to yours.
Short answer is no. Get X/T/W Thinkpad, X220 works for me as a everyday workhorse with only it's HD3000 GPU being a bottleneck, as it is useless for gaming <it does run STALKER well thou>. X230 is better but it is hard to find one for 150 dollars in, heh, central europe.
As this anon said, >>61815790
it is a netbook. It is a nice netbook but you can't really do much with one. A 'proper', as defined by guides in top post, can be upgraded with RAM, proper SSD and be a very good computer for any given value. Also, external docks. And bateries are cheap.

>>61815636
I've only tried x201 with wacom digitizer and can say that for writing it is a very fine device. For drawing, sketching, latency can get noticable.

Do you think the mobo of a Celeron example can take the i3 or will it be a huge bottleneck?
>>
>>61815790
>>61815590

IMHO, it doesn't get better than the x220. Especially if you have the normal 3 cell battery, you will be surprised how slimline and portable it is (it's barley larger than a netbook even though it's got a great keyboard). The only downsides compared to older models from my point of view is the webcam and trackpad, neither of which I want. But you can put 16gb of ram in it if you want, and an SSD.
>>
>>61815590
meh. worse build quality, worse performance, worse keyboard and disappointing I/O compared to T/W/X series.
and it's not even cheaper. even in europe you can get aproper X series for that price. best would be

I've actually managed to find this - https://www.olx.pl/oferta/lenovo-thinkpad-x230i-i3-4gb-ram-win7pro-320gb-CID99-IDlAoL6.html#150ec65a1e
114.92 Euros, with exception of that palmrest it is in very nice condition. And with that price you can get replacement keyboards with all those weird ć, ę and ł.
Can translate if needed.

There was like two days of cool jungle rain, but all that was good for is making all the mosquito larvae hatch. Now it's hot as on Venus again and I'm covered in bites.

No because the HD4000 is one generation newer than the X220.
The X220 came with second gen i5 CPUs and these include the Intel HD3000. The HD4000 is the integrated GPU for 3rd gen i5 (for example X230) and these were never available in the X220.

CPU is weird too. The i5-2520m is a 2.5GHz CPU. 2.7GHz is only available with the i7-2620m.

Have T440p.
Find a ex-lease with decent specs that has the 720p screen and mechanical hard drive. Then just upgrade that shit afterwards, my 1080p panel was only like 100 bucks and the 720p model was nearly 300 cheaper than the FHD one.

I'll be away from home for a year and want a portable machine to stay sane. Something not too big/heavy and with good battery. I am having a very specific issue with Windows 7 Pro on my T420. After I did a clean install, I try to run Lenovo System Update to get the drivers and such, but I get an error saying 'The System Update Center Is Currently Unavailable.'

This is outlined in this thread: https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/forums/v3_1/forumtopicpage/board-id/Special_Interest_Utilities/thread-id/18828/page/1

The solution is to modify a registry key to say "VENDOR"="THINK", instead of "VENDOR"="UNDEFINED". However, there is no such key in my registry at all, as seen in the picture.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Might be more of a Windows 7 issue, but I really have no idea what to do.

Use boot manager.
>>
Will Coreboot work on the x220 Tablet? Also is removing Intel ME a possibility and still having my shit boot a possibility yet?
>>
>>61827236
>>61827236

This is the most common chink "brand" for Thinkpad batteries over here, 9 cells and it cost like $70 USD.

Worth it?
>>
>>61827446
you can get genuine ones for the same price and they have a warranty
>>
>>61827179
Mercadolibre?

>x230t supports only 3 and 6 cell batteries (while x230 can use 9 cell ones).

Is this really true? I was going to get a 9 cell for my x230t and I never heard this. Is this the case even when the embedded controller is flashed to use x220 batteries?
>>
>>61827472
The original ones cost like $165 over here

>>61827486
Si.

AlgĂşn otro lugar dĂłnde pueda comprar otra baterĂa a un mejor precio?
>>
>>61827514
No.

Just buy the german ones that last 3-4 hours.
>>
>>61827486
Pero hace un par de meses la compré. Desconozco si el vendedor siga por ahí.
> Pensé que me hablabas sobre la batería
>>
>>61827514
if you get it straight from Lenovo yeah, check Amazon and Ebay
>>
>>61827487
yes, Lenovo only made 6-cell batteries for the tablets. Unless you count the slice battery or third party batteries.

My x220 Tablet is missing a bunch of retaining screws. Are those something I can buy? If not is getting a non-working/damaged x220 Tablet on ebay or something to source the screws from a good idea?
>>
>>61827569
No es la de 9 celdas, es de 6 pero es original. Y qué buen precio. Lo tomaré en cuenta y probablemente haga la compra en un futuro cercano. Gracias!
> En Mercadolibre tienden a inflar demasiad los precios :c

i changed the boot order to dvd as the first but still the issue persisted next I tries having everything default, still nothing. I installed ubuntu fine with the disk the first time with no issue. Does having 64 bit cinnamon linux download make it not work. all i did was drop the iso file on the dvd. what do?
>>
>>61827622
I am Mexican, i own a T400 with a X9100.

>>61827627
>all i did was drop the iso file on the dvd. what do?
You did it wrong, get Rufus and make your USB/DVD bootable.
>>
>>61827596
which screws? most of them are standard m2x3, the others are also mostly m2, but different lengths
>>
>>61827622
I doubt you can find the original 9 cell one in Mexico, your best bet is buy a chink one with LG 18650 batteries or get a original 6 cell one.
>>
>>61827684
I think they're all related to the keyboard and palmrest/trackpad
>>
>>61827636
> La T400 era mi primera opción, porque era económica le podía hacer algunos upgrades. Después estuve tentado por la T410, pero sin querer queriendo encontré la T420 a un mejor precio que la T410, así que me animé mejor por esta,

Use the next boot order
> USB HD
> USB FD
> HDD
> DVD

I'm running Win7, but in the past, I used Lili USB (Linux Live USB) creator to make Linux USB bootable flash drives.

I Tried to boot some Linux distros (Antergos/Mint) on this T420, but I get an error; It doesn't recognized the keyboard, I changed the boot order and works like a charm to boot Wifislax
> Le wi-fi hacker meme
>>
>>61827713
T410 is overpriced here because MUH I5 meme even if its first generation.
X201 is overpriced because is rare as fuck.
T400 is cheap because all banks used it, literally.
L430 and L440 will be cheap soon too.
>>
>>61827705
I'm 99% sure all of those are M2x3.

https://www.amazon.com/Machine-Phillips-Toshiba-Samsung-Alienware/dp/B06XH3PWJQ/

This would work, or just go to the hardware/hobby store.
>>
>>61827691
As you can say, they aren't over here. If they are on online stores, they are imports (from USA?) and they are more expensive :c

> your best bet is buy a chink one with LG 18650 batteries or get a original 6 cell one.

I'm seriously thinking on buy a 6 cell original one instead a 9cell chink one.
>>
>>61827755
Chinese ones will work, they just will last 2 years before you reach the 1 hour battery life.
>>
Piece of shit T430s won't turn on. When I press the power button it'll light up for exactly 1 second then nothing. No display, no fan, nothing. Tried holding the power button for various times (5, 10 30 seconds, a few minutes) and same thing. Time for a new mobo?
>>
>>61827748
Awesome. I'll buy some on Friday. In the meantime will my Thinkpad fall apart without them? There's no keyboard or trackpad currently installed, so I can't say from experience
>>
> Muh Core i5 and 4GB of RAM
You are right with this.

> Some days ago I see an T420 with a Corei7 for Like $400 USD. It was an 'murican import. I laugh at the seller.
>>
>>61827321
Nope. Did that with my last three laptops. I have the opportunity to get a new one, and I'm taking it.
>>

>Number inside the red circle identifies the pack as being for a particular model or models. AFAIK, the numbering system is arbitrary. The single "+" sign indicates that it's a 6 cell version, vs. the "standard" battery that does not have a "+" sign (usually 3-cell). The double "++" is for the 8 or 9 cell versions.
>>
>>61825512
How's the battery life?
>>
>>61827835
the palm rest has some plastic clippy bits (make sure they are all snapped into place) and the keyboard has some tabs that slide into place, so just don't push the keyboard forward and it should all stick together without any screws

I just bought a t61 for shitposting in bed

The fan rattles loudly on anything more demanding than the BIOS screen. I am sure oiling the fan will fix it but I am more sure /g/.

How does the fan come apart in these things?
>>
>>61828271
Just rip the whole machine apart. You might be better off buying a new fan for it.
>>
>>61828247
If you're the Mexican anon then you'd be better buying from amazon or something, i'm from shit america and can't ship or receive batteries from overseas. We don't even have amazon.
>>
>>61828316
Entire fan cooler setup or just the fan?
I haven't taken a screwdriver to this yet and cant until next week. (I'd like to order the parts today)
>>
I can get a T400 for $90. Is this good value?
>>
>>61828351
You'll likely have to take the whole cooling assembly out to get the fan out, but you'll want to do that anyway to replace the thermal paste. Use non-conductive thermal paste.
>>
>>61828373
Will conductive fuck me or is it just to be extra safe?
>>
This might be a dumb question, but... is it possible to install water cooling in a T400? Mine overheats like a bitch.
>>
>>61828402
Why would you? Water cooling just lets you install a bigger cooler away from the CPU.
You'd end up with a huge fanny pack hanging out of your laptop
>>
>>61827038
Please respond
>>
>>61828395
Conductive can fuck you if you get it on the capacitors around the die. It's not worth the risk.
Also, spread method for bare die. Pea method will fuck you up.
>>
Where can I find more info on modifying the BIOS?
>>
>>61815320
You need the nonfree drivers, run lspci and look around for your card, then search around on google for a tar.gz you can extract and build

also make sure that if you rebuild your kernel you enable any settings needed (you can usually find this inside the tarball containing the driver you downloaded)
>>
>>61816869
Just buy a BBB

>the pi was a pain in the ass anyways

>>61829057
I'll probably do this. I think saving myself the frustration is worth $70.

Can't do anything about it, proprietary software got upgraded and now runs only on 7 and higher. So to hell with it, 10 actually does not stutter.
Don't I get bonus points for CRT?

>tfw can't decide if I want a i5-7300HQ with a 17 inch screen, or a i7-7700HQ with a 15 inch

I have no way of comparing them in person currently, and I've never owned a laptop before.

What would you choose for your personal needs? I'm kind of leaning towards the i7 to be more future proof, but I can't tell if a 15.6 inch screen would be too uncomfy.
