Well I'm glad I got some confirmation as I was really clueless but I really want to get into watches. I never really cared about them but now I feel strangely intrigued.

So I'll probably get the diver and dress Seiko and then save up for the "real deals".
Maybe I'll get a G Shock because I'm a very outdoor person too so having something really sturdy can hurt and they're not that expensive, right?

>>61808285
There are lots of aesthetic things I don't like about the Black Bays but they're certainly good watches and you really can't fault them on quality or anything technical. So if you like how it looks then it's a great choice.

I would suggest always buying a watch on the bracelet and then buying a leather strap separately because if you ever decide you want the bracelet then you're going to have to pay out the ass for it. Having the bracelet will really help resale value one day too, if you ever get tired of it. It's easy to find any leather strap you like, I'm sure there's lots of straps which would closely match that one.

Story time!

Called my local Omega Boutique (San Diego) to inquire about any promotional/showroom art or posters that they would be willing to sell to a 3rd party(me, I collect that stuff). My family has been a customer of theirs for 15 years, bought quite a bit of timepieces from them over that period. Guy immediately tells me in broken, frog-english that they "are a corporate store" and then hangs up on me like I'm some telemarketer. Never going there, and I recommend you guys do the same...

Canadanon:
The 5256 was running around +7 to +13 or so in six positions after 24 hours with an amplitude around 220, as compared to +2 to +9 with a 280+ amplitude with a full wind. Seems obvious a service could tighten up a lot of those times.

The case has a near-mirror finish to it and I suspect it's been polished (it looks like I can see some scuffs near two o'clock, hard to say), but if it has been polished it wasn't a terrible job.

Date change and advance work very well, though the date quickset is pretty stiff - noticeably stiffer than the day change. Is that true on yours?

For my first 'nice' watch I'm thinking of either a speedmaster or a spring drive snowflake.

What is a better option? I think the speedy is more versatile and would get more wear, but I think the snowflake is just a better watch in general.

>>
>>61810001
Seiko
>>
>>61810001
Seiko Credor is the top of the line Japanese production watch. Entry level Credor is probably on par with something like a JLC. High complication Credor is very, very good. Grand Seiko is a level below Credor and is often compared to Rolex. It's positioned solidly above Omega in terms of finishing.

Citizen has put out a limited Tourbillon, but besides that their highest end watch is The Citizen Chronomaster, which is often described as being a comparable to but a bit below a Grand Seiko.

There is not much of an independent scene in Japan as compared to Europe - there's Asaoka, but that's about it as far as I know.

Very nice condition, and 220 after 24 hours is pretty good. As I said, you could probably get away with just having it regulated rather than full service, but if you don't mind the expense, getting it serviced gives peace of mind.

Also, the date quick-set is like that on all 52xx movements because it winds the mainspring while turning. Most people who don't know about it often mistakenly think the date quick-set is broken.

Sub doesn't work as well in as many situations. You can push an explorer and a dress watch but you look like a tool doing the same with a sub. You don't really need the 300m water resistance in regular life and if you do you get an actual cheaper dive watch anyway for that purpose if you do that much deep diving.

Thanks. Another question. To own a watch,do you need to do any maintenance? Following the car analogy, a cars maintenance is changing oil, washing, etc... Is there such things when it comes to watches or can you just let them be without doing maintenance every few weeks/months?
>>
>>61812127
A mechanical watch will in general need servicing every 5 years or so, depending. Quartz watches will too, but most of the time the movement is so cheap it's easier to just replace it rather than service it.

But depend on where you live too, if you live in the tropical country where 35C is the norm then 2-3 years servicing is the way to go because the oil will dry faster.
Also depend on what kind of watches, Rolex will often be 5 years where JLC will usually recommend buyer to service it 1-2 years.

>monetarily, the seamaster 300 is the far better choice, since it normally costs a lot more than the speedmaster
>>
>>61812603
If the 300 didn't have the cuckaxial movement, it'd be that.
>>
>>61812634
Is the co-axial really that terminal if you plan to send it in to Omega for regular servicing anyway?
>>
>>61812660
You'd just get fucked with omega's costs, and the short servicing interval. If it didn't need lubrication like the real daniels or roger smith coaxials, there'd be no problem.

Afaik most of the criticism voiced against omega's cuckaxial movement pertains to the older movements where they retrofitted the system into ETA ebauches.
The master cuckaxial has only been out for a few years, so it's difficult to tell how it will fare; but at least this time the whole movement is purpose-built around it, so it should be better.

At any rate, the specs on that movement are fantastic (silicon hairspring, 60hr power reserve, full balance bridge, ceramic bearings, 15k gauss magnetic resistance, ...), and it looks tremendous.

It might be cheesy, but I love the fact that the SM300 has a display caseback. You pay thousands for the mechanical wizardry, and it's just nice to be able to actually see the thing at work. Plus, you can't tell it has a display caseback when you're wearing it anyway.

I used to loathe omega, but I really like this watch from its design to its specs.

All that shit is great. Now if only the escapement itself wasn't more difficult to oil with no actual benefit over a swiss lever.

Maybe the new movements they made from the ground up won't have this issue.

A lot of cushion-case watches from the 70's like Soviet Amphibias have that radial brushing finish. It looks like sometimes it's just machining marks they left on the case for decoration, and other times it is indeed a brushing. I assume they do this by slowly rotating the case around it's center axis as a rotary brush is working on it.

They are the 2 different design houses within Seiko that competed with each other. Daini made the best movements, whereas Suwa were a bit more experimental. The Suwa 56xx movements have a problem with the plastic date quickset wheel perishing, Daini 52xx don't have that issue.

>>
>>61814478
Rolex is regulated to 60 seconds per month. A cheap digital is probably 15-30 seconds per month.
>>
>>61814843

> 60 seconds per month

a f91w can do half that is a year so about 24x as accurate at 1/1000th of the price i.e. 24000x better cost/performance.
>>
>>61814913
If you're claiming you have an f91w that's accurate to 30spy you've gotten lucky, plain and simple (kind of like canadanon's datejust that's been at +/- 0 for three months or whatever it is).

If you're evaluating quality as accuracy/price, I'm afraid some of the CSAC pieces that have come out recently will win - 1 second per millennium at less than 1000x the price of your f91w.

The Snowfrake is far more special. Both the movement, finishing and dial are on a different league compared to the Speedmaster.

However you can also get a vintage Speedmaster quite cheaper when you're buying vintage, and some of the vintage models look better than the new ones. But you can't get a vintage Snowfrake for cheap, there's no such thing.

So, save a bit more, get the Snowfrake new, and if you still crave the Speemaster, get a vintage one. Best of both worlds.

The problem is that the movement would unquestionably be improved by eliminating the fundamentally flawed (in production watches) co-axial escapement, and yet The Swatch Group has stuck with its fundamentally flawed implementation of the co-axial escaepement because realizing a return on their marketing investment is much more important to them than the quality or durability of your watch.

Omega's co-axial escapement is far inferior by every criteria than a traditional Swiss lever escapement of equal quality would be.

On leather it will be a lot closer than most people ever get to wearing an actual dress watch.

Just be aware that is Lord Matic 56xx and as such is a pretty low-end 21,600 bph movement and will have a high risk of day/date quickset failure due to a plastic piece in the mechanism that tends to shrink and crack due to age rather than wear.

I don't know how the fetishism with Daini came to be.

Suwa was chosen at the time to produce the Grand Seikos and Suwa came up with the conception, design, prototyping and production of the Spring Drive, the most unique and innovative Seiko movement.

Not to mention that Suwa came up with quartz as well, turning the whole industry upside down and making watches affordable to everybody. And kept pushing the boundaries with thermocompensated quartz in Grand Seiko quarters.

Not that Daini was a slacker, but they were similar/equivalent movements at best, bot heaven and hell as memes would have you believe.

My first automatic watch ever. The 4r36 movement is retardedly good. I average +/- 3 seconds on my SRP773 and I've had it for about a year now.

Saving up for a marinemaster 300 now.

I just got a 1981 6309-7040 in great shape, this old ass movement was just serviced and runs great. Honestly you seem to be a wristlet so I would consider possibly something else for $2000 instead of the mm300. Maybe a second hand Speedy reduced that isnt cuckaxial or a 36mm explorer.

The SKX007/009 get shilled pretty hard around here. It is still the cheapest ISO certified dive watch and a lot of people really like the highly functional appearance.

I pretty much doubled the cost of mine having a 6r15c and a sapphire crystal put in because it's one of the very few dive watches I actually like.

god im so fucking torn right now. I keep looking at the skx and the monster gen 2. The monster gen 2 is has a nice bracelet already and the 4r36 and costs 200 dollars.. the skx is so much nicer looking but would require an nh35 a new crown and a super oyster before really being the same category.

Are we talking about vintage or modern here? Both vintage Milgauss and Explorer II are top tier because Rolex wasn't afraid to play around a bit. Modern Milgauss is just a color-clashing Datejust sans date, and Explorer II is literally just a Submariner with another bezel and extra hand.

"The Seiko Orange Monster is a piece de resistance, or since I'm Italian let's use two words - 'Japanese Perfezione'.

It's a two hundred dollar bargain, just a shade below the best of Switzerland. Although it's 42mm it wears a lot smaller and the orange dial is equally at home at the beach or in the corporate boardroom."

this is a great value. NH35A hackable movement is a bang for 85 bucks with the whole watch. Plus you can always mod the watch and make it your own.

Only downside is the awful invicta logo on the side of the case.

Maybe 50 years ago when you were timing something like areal navigation or the speed that your driver just took through a corner, but this is the modern age where ISO certification is pretty useless except for the very few people who still use their watches as tools.

ISO certification is for water resistance and a few other things that make a watch suitable for use as a diving watch, I'm pretty sure it doesn't include anything about accuracy. The SKX is certainly no chronometer anyway from the factory.

What's a good, rugged mechanical watch for field use? I had a G-Shock, but it broke. I used to use an f91w, but I'd like to have a nicer bit of kit while I'm out competing. Just a little luxury, you know?

If you're being rough enough to destroy a g-shock you should probably just get another g-shock, it will last the longest.

Vostok Amphibia or SKX007. Just keep in mind though that mechanical watches are inherently fragile since they have tiny gears and other shit inside, and don't really like taking heavy beatings.
I'd just say get a more rugged G-Shock, diver, or maybe something like a Timex expedition.

Actually I bough the bracelet from StrapCode separately, also Tim Hortons is utter trash.

Also I'm still annoyed that no one Madea double AR crystals for the SKX. I'm actually considering inquiring at a few lens coating companies to see if they'll double AR a crystal to order.

>>
>>61825514
>he wants to pay $6k for a pigfat 214270 when a 114270 in excellent condition is like $4k or less
Try Bob's Watches I guess, I had a good experience with them. They have some of the pre-2016 Trump 214270s for like $5200, but you'll probably have to wait a while before the new ones start to appear on the used market.

I also went to a store and compared the 214270 and 114270 and didn't really like the new one, to be honest. The lume is great but it just looks worse in pretty much every other aspect. I would suggest trying them on.
