From IRC
><bjin> hanna: I tried several method for dering, for example clamping negative weights by half, or daala's dering filter. All of them hurt the PSNR significantly and make final image noticably more blur. The best try (-0.3dB in PSNR) I have at this moment is a second kernel tuned to be smooth, which seems to reduce ringing only in area with sharp gradient change, but leave other ringing and details as is. It's in the smooth branch, actuall
><bjin> y just a hack with hand-picked smooth function.
><bjin> I think with linear model there is really not much we can do against ringing. either adding more layers to extract features other than gradient change. or making the model nonlinear and tune for cost function other than PSNR, both seems not easy

Buy a HDR screen and an SDR screen and remaster the HDR content for the SDR screen scene-by-scene

Pretty slow and costly (if you want to pay a mastering engineer to do it), but produces the best result

Hable works better for shit mastered marketing clips and way-too-bright content, because it makes everything darker. mobius works better for well-mastered content which only uses the extended signal range for super-highlights.

Also make sure your mpv version is new enough to have ea76f79, that one significantly improves the quality of the non-hable algorithms

Add
angle-flip=no
to your mpv.conf.

If MOUSE_BTN3 and MOUSE_BTN4 aren't working in your input.conf, try using AXIS_UP and AXIS_DOWN to control scrollwheel.

should be added back imo. Those are often the cause of issues and not clearly documented.
>>
>>61691484
Only reason you wouldn't call it max is if you don't realize that quality is subjective. I'd say that's a given, though I guess for the people that it's intended for it might not be. But trying to explain how it's not max might be too much for those.
Besides, opengl-hq is "high quality", if anything this would be very high quality or something stupid.

Could possibly be improved by using bicubic instead of bilinear. Oh, and this approach could also be adapted to RAVU fairly easily.

That github link appears to be more ideal. Unless if there exists apps that allow you to assign buttons to pipe messages to the player itself.

I'll take a look at this later. Thanks, anon.
>>
>>61693663
Also it's possible that the parameters need fine-tuning. You could also probably justify using more samples than the 8 I chose.
>>
>>61693663
It's also possible to adapt it as follows to work for the chroma scaler in principle, but that introduces some error because it fails to account for chroma offsets. (Unfortunately, I don't have a good solution for this based on the current API)

Jinc AR chroma
Jinc AR downscaling
NGU AA vhigh/medium quadrupling
0.5 AdaptiveSharpen + AR (once after upscaling is complete)

That's the screenshot and what I use normally. I've been playing around with chroma upscaling now and it makes a huge difference in this particular frame, though in other situations I can barely tell the difference. Using NGU for chroma here actually introduces some very visible, weird-ass artifacting on the hand icons on the walls.

>>
>>61697473
>an acceptable substitute for NGU
Doesn't even make sense considering there are like 4 different NGU variants that produce visibly different results before you even get into configuring any one of them. It's highly dependent on the source too, what looks wonderfully sharp on one video might look like oily shit on another, there's a decent amount of tweaking involved to get NGU to look nice across multiple types/quality levels of video.

You are lucky i'm coming back to this thread the exact moment you posted this post.

No it's really easy, there is a graphical installer (far better than debian installer), you need to type void-installer after boot to run the graphical installer.
The only hard part is the partionning/formating part because it's not automatic (you can read the arch wiki for help tho).
It's far easier and faster than arch install.

I'm also running on a dell laptop and i have no problems (wifi drivers works fine).

What is your linux experience ? What did you already installed ?

Im pretty sure NO. mpv can make use of ICC profile, windows can, some programs like image editors can. Gaems cant without some third party application.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. I'm afraid of getting one and being more annoyed with not being able to get proper colors in all applications (and the same colors under both Linux & Windows), especially since I imagine getting the monitor calibrated might require messing with its own settings too. Yes for both. Not all software will pick up per-monitor ICC profiles on Windows, but mpv will.

>Do color profiles apply to everything, like full-screen games/applications?
Nope. For mpv, they will, but every program needs to implement special support for colour profiles. From what I've seen, the vast majority of programs flat-out ignore the ICC profile configured in Windows, including most browsers and image viewers. Only a handful of programs, like professional image editors, can automatically pick up the configured profile from the OS.

>do both Windows and Linux support different color profiles for each screen if you're using more than 1
Yes, both windows and linux(X11) do.

>Do color profiles apply to everything, like full-screen games/applications?
ICC profiles themselves inherently don't do anything unless either the application actually uses them (unlikely) or the compositor does mapping (which neither windows nor linux do out of the box afaik, only OS X does this).

That said, ICC profiles usually also contain calibration LUTs which *do* apply to all programs, but they don't do gamut mapping - just fixing the transfer curve. Also, video games usually override the cLUTs anyway.
>>
>>61699573
Monitor calibration (i.e. fixing the transfer curve) will always help, period. Monitor *profiling* (which is required for e.g. gamut mapping) will only help applications that use it.

But unless you're using a wide gamut monitor (which you probably aren't), you don't really need gamut mapping that much, so you probably won't get as annoyed by it as people with wide gamut monitors (for which everything looks shit unless it supports ICC profiles).

>>
>>61708897
it's probably your browser's hardware acceleration washing out the youtube image with the limited 16-235 colorspace. by default, mpv has no hwaccel and uses opengl instead of direct3d, which almost always results in the proper colorspace.

do you have an nvidia gpu? im guessing vlc also shows you the same washed out image on that. you have to tweak a setting to get it right on every player.
>>
>>61707747
>Post logs please. mpv really shouldn't fail out of the box like that, just because you're playing HDR content.
Well tone mapping requires a higher GLSL version, maybe ANGLE shit doesn't implement it?
>>
>>61708251
tscale=oversample on 120 Hz is almost surely a no-op. Might as well just keep it off and use only video-sync.

>>
>>61709026

Sometimes, it results in problems. Most of the time, it's fine. However, software acceleration is 100% of the time a good choice and always performs better on machines that have a better CPU than GPU.

not quite as terrible as hwaccel encoding, but it's still not really a good idea unless your CPU is too weak to handle the file

1. Because nobody wrote the code to do that
2. Because it's a lot of complexity for relatively little benefit
3. Because it's almost impossible to tell a priori. Remember, the file could be VFR, and in this case, toggline interpolation “on and off” like that is a bad idea.

Does that mean that haasnsoft is also recommended for scale when using RAVU?

What the heck?! It was bjin in recommendations to RAVU for chroma.

I'm trying to use nnedi3 and ravu but both of them didn't show up in stats.lua
Am i doing something wrong ?

I haven't updated my config in a while. Is anything here deprecated, should I change/add anything?
>>

Run mpv from the command line and it will tell you.

Why am I getting "[vo/opengl] Error while parsing FORMAT!" error while trying to use ravu?
>>

If I open a youtube/twitch/other website video it immediately opens the player window (instead of when it loads the content)

disables interpolation when I open such content

use mpv git master and latest ravu

Does mpv play H265/HEVC better than VLC? I have vlc 2.2.4 (weathermax), and the video freezes while the audio continues to play.

Might be a corrupted file. Try with mpv, if it does the same it's either corrupted or badly encoded.

heads up AMD/linux users:

All of the AMD+mesa bugs should be fixed in master. This includes the EWA compute shader rendering bug as well as performance issues with vd-lavc-dr. (DR should now be *way* faster)

Unfortunately too slow compared to GTX 970, so I'll unplug it again and only use it for testing.

(Also apparently it vsyncs X by default or something, which I can't stand. And the setting for it doesn't seem to exist on my end for whatever reason)

I said it was 720p. So I take it you mean its for videos with shit aspect ratios or something?
>If you're watching 1080p content on a 1080p screen, you don't want mpv to change anything.
So you actually edit your mpv config file for every single video you want to watch?
>>
>>61717703
>I said it was 720p.
You said you didn't notice until it was 720p, implying that it was 1080p before.

>So you actually edit your mpv config file for every single video you want to watch?
No, how the fuck did you get that from my post?

having anything in the config file has mpv change stuff. I guess I just took it too literal.
>>

>having anything in the config file has mpv change stuff.
Not necessarily. Scalers are disabled if there's nothing to scale for example.

Sorry, I was testing the wrong binary; *this* is the ver with antiring enabled

so mpv-shot1 = reference, mpv-shot2 = antiring.hook; mpv-shot3 = antiring from branch

Maybe you could write a shader and load it via mpv?

I'm aware that picture is an edit of Dragon Ball Super so that it more closely resembles Dragon Ball Z coloring but I have no idea what was done to create that effect. Do you know the person who made it or know what they did?
