Alright lads, britbong here

Looking to upgrade my moto g4 play I bought for cheap last year, reason being the lack of ram and old sd are really starting to slow it down.

Because of my job I get 30% off contracts and carphone warehouse so I'd be looking to take advantage of this rather than buying a handset outright. Up until now I was set on the pixel for £35 p/m (which gets brought down to £24.50 p/m) but they seem to have shot up in price yesterday for no apparent reason.

I've lurked this general for a few weeks so I've now started looking at the new lg g6 and the zte axon 7 mini (they don't have the reg one)

I'd be willing to spend up to £30 p/m (after my discount) and preferably with no upfront cost as I don't get money off that

Obviously I'm a bit limited for choice but here's the full selection of plans if any friendly anons wanna help me out https://www.carphonewarehouse.com/mobiles/pay-monthly.html#!/recurring/40/sort/p_t_rec_chrg_desc%7Cp_t_upfrontprice

Whatsapp doesn't show notifications unless the screen is awake.

I bought a Samsung Galaxy s5 about six months ago and it was working perfectly! But in the last week the battery has been draining really really fast.

I tested it today and it lost 11% in an hour after I fully charged it. I just left it sitting on a table and it drained that much.
It seems to be getting worse as the time goes on.

I tried disabling stuff like location, factory reset and I even bought a new battery but it is still terrible.

The android system is consuming 26.6% of the battery and the kernel is consuming 11.2% within the last hour.

Hello everyone, got a question for you all.

My niece forgot the pattern to her Motorola Moto G and wants to somehow get access to her files. She asked me, the guy who usually fixes electronic stuff in the family for some reason, if I could find a way to help her with that.

Well, I've been trying all day and all I can find on the internet is google's ADM, which isn't a viable solution in this case because she had no google account, and the hard reset, which would erase her files from the cellphone.

Does any of you have any way I could get the files from the phone, despite the forgotten pattern on the lock screen?

Any info/tips/solutions would be greatly appreciated.

What if they're dockable like the Nintendo switch? And the dock has usb and hdmi and everything you'll need.

>>
>>61531608
That's pretty much what I mean, some kind of dock with wireless charging that also connects to your phone to give the image to a screen.

I guess they could also make a "gaming" phone that had a hdmi and charging port and you just dock it, the dock has usb slots for keyboard/mouse and then links to a monitor with HDMI and everything is sorted by simply plugging the dock into the mains, with quickcharge 3.0 you'd basically have unlimited power anyway.

idk why this isn't a thing yet
>>
>>61531750
Because vulkan only just became a viable option and phones aren't really that powerful. Plus what power they do have will be fucked over by shitty drivers.

If vulkan was more popular it could happen though, the switch is barely more powerful than a SD821 phone.

There's another issue of what happens if someone calls you mid game...

Someone redpill me.

I really need a Snapdragon 835 phone that's dual sim. I mainly use my phone for emulation of games. So far Xperia XZ Premium is the only thing fitting my criteria. It also helps that it has native Dualshock 4 support.

Should I jump in or wait for the next flagship reveal? I really am tempted to get this because of how I've seen Adreno 540 handle PSP emulation so well right now.

>>61534158
Tbh i liked sense most around ics/jb.

>>
>>61535083
My Zuk Z2 Pro handles psp emulating well, 30fps@1080p even when screen recording. Battlefront even sometimes runs at 60fps. SD835 won't be significantly faster because it doesn't offer significantly better single thread performance which emulators need. It's definitely a cpu bottleneck on my phone because turning up graphics settings improved the performance...

If your current phone isn't enough, get a cheaper phone with big CPU cores like SD652 or Helio X25/x20 until phone CPUs start seeing significant single core performance improvement.

At 2.3GHz my SD820 gets almost the same single core performance as the Samsung S8.

Still using my 2 year old LG G4. I've been looking around at the current flagship phones, and honestly haven't seen anything impressive enough to make me drop the insane amount of money current handsets cost. Am I missing something, or have phones hardly improved in the past few years. The only issue I have with my current phone is the dwindling battery life, but that's easily rectified with a powerbank.
>>
>>61536160
It has vulkan and multicore mode, vulkan works great but is still a buggy mess. Multicore doesn't scale well due to psp being single core to begin with. I gain like 2fps with it and games are more likely to crash with it.

>>
>>61527341

>>
>>61536920
Well it might seem like there hasn't been any improvement but there definitely has. A 2017 flagship will have a better camera, better performance, better battery life, a better display, more RAM and storage, and features such as waterproofing, fast charging and a fingerprint reader. It's just that most of the improvements are incremental rather than huge leaps. Just compare the LG G4 to something 2 years older than it, even though there hasn't been anything huge that's happened between that time in smartphone technology, the G4 is still all around a much better phone than say a HTC One M7 or Galaxy S4.

Keep in mind, I'm not saying you SHOULD buy a new phone. If you feel it's still working fine for you then by all means keep on using it. It's still a 2015 flagship so it's not like it'll suddenly became unusable or obsolete, especially since with a replaceable battery you can always get a new one if it goes to shit.

I have taken all the steps using greenify and fiddling with the setting to try and improve it, I even bought a brand new battery and it still devours it.

I'm also wondering how much worse the camera a will be, but this isn't a big issue.

Astounding that Xiaomi managed to make it less battery efficient than Redmi Note 4 despite smaller screen, lower resolution and weaker SoC with same battery.
Is SD435 really so inefficient? Fucking hell.
>>
>>61541181
>>61541098
Looking deeper into it, Redmi Note 4 and Redmi 4 Prime have same SoC, same battery, same resolution, same soft, are made my same company and Prime has smaller screen but it also supposedly dies faster?
I call bullshit. This site isn't reliable at all.
>>
>>61541181
The main reason for the difference in the power efficiency is the process the SoC is made at. The Note 4 has the 14nm SD625 SoC, whereas the Redmi 3S, 4 and 4X have the 28nm SD430 (SD435 is just a SD430 with a faster LTE modem)

>>61541243
The Redmi 4 Prime score isn't accurate, they've made a mistake with the video test and used software decoding when it should have been run with hardware decoding (possibly a MIUI bug). Just compare the web browsing score, it's much closer to the Note 4 (4 Prime gets 20h, Note 4 gets 18h)

But generally the scores are a pretty good measure of battery life. Just because one phone has a mistake doesn't mean they're all wrong.

Where did it all go so wrong?

The 3T was a killer phone, with specs competitive with $800 flagships at a $430 price point.

But this thing is barely more powerful as the previous model, they're advertising features that the old ones had as if they're new (128GB of storage, anyone?), it looks exactly the same from the front, and it seems as if the only thing they actually changed is they added another camera. And then it's $50 more than the 3T.

If they needed a more profitable unit to let them reinvest in new technologies later, why didn't they make another X at a $300 price-point instead of rushing a new flagship that isn't any better than the last one?

>>
>>61541492
If you have a black bezel it's indistinguishable from the screen, I don't even really notice it until I see the corners are square, but given how razor thin the bezels already are, it's not really noticeable.
>>
>>61541802
Still shouldn't be there, it's a waste of space which could have been used for a larger display.
>>
>>61541837

Phones evolve over time depending on the needs and wants of consumers. Today, consumers are okay with losing physical buttons on the front of their phones in favor of a larger display. It's another jump in mobile evolution much like the leap from Blackberry to the iPhone.

>>61541979
can unlock lying down
>>
>>61541947
I understand that on paper, but in practice I don't see smartphones actually getting larger displays. Instead I see abortions like the G6 where there isn't a larger screen anyway (not REALLY, because the buttons are still there, they just don't work when the screen is off and occasionally glitch out) and then there's bullshit like fingerprint sensors on the back.

With keyboards it's different, because there's obviously many more cases in a smartphone where you don't need a keyboard compared to when you do. However, app switching, closing, and especially the back button are things you need access to ALL the time,
There have been (not many, but a number of) times where I've had apps crash and not close properly, where the only thing that got it off the screen was CM's "hold down back to force-quit the current app" feature (this happened especially with pre-Nougat CM builds and Screen Pinning).
If I'd had software buttons instead of hardware buttons, I would have had to reboot my phone. That's unacceptable, and, like I said, there really isn't a significant downside to hardware buttons.

>>61541987
Are there any phones that have integrated fingerprint scanners and screens? This isn't something I'm familiar with.

>>61542020
It's also a case of (especially with large phones) not having to hold it a very specific way to unlock it - and also it limits freedom for cases. My case has a retractable stand built into the back. This would not be possible if there had to be a big hole in the back of it. Also I rarely ever hold my phone so my fingers are supporting the middle of the phone, I either grip the whole thing or prop it up on my middle finger.
>>
>>61542020
the G6 at least requires a second way to get it, so you can set a pin or something too if you really can't be bothered to pick it up

But thats .. retarded. Except if youre speaking like a true writer here
>>
>>61542066
It takes longer than fingerprint though.
Not saying it's a big problem, I'm not the original anon.
>>
>>61542064
The button is up high enough that it should be easy to make a case with a stand, as for "holding it a specific way" it's really not difficult to place your finger on the back of the phone as... it's already there.
>>
>>61542090
again, just pick up the phone? What use could a phone have on its back that a second pin doesn't handle well enough?
>>
>>61542134
Sometimes picking up the phone isn't an option. Especially in cases when it's, for example, connecting to an audio system that impedes mobility.
>>
>>61542134
Again, not original anon, not a big deal to me, but with a phone lying down it's fastest and most comfortable to use front fingerprint. No need to pick it up or input the pattern/password which both takes more time and is more cumbersome.
>>
>>61542158
yeah but it's more convenient, in my opinion anyway, to have it on the back when you're holding it
>>
>>61542155
>an audio system that impedes mobility.

what?
>>
I think that aesthetically the Oneplus One is the best phones are ever going to get.
>>
>>61542174
You hold it in a way that touching the screen is hard?
To me both are very easy to use when holding the phone in my hand.
>>
>>61542191
Say, an aux cord that's either really short or that you can't get close enough to to introduce slack.
>>
>>61542194
too big bezels

>>61542212
i dunno that's sort of a stretch, again, just use the PIN in that case what's the big deal
>>
>>61542240
>i dunno that's sort of a stretch, again, just use the PIN in that case what's the big deal
Android pin entry fucking SUCKS. It's really, really easy to go faster than the keypad supports and end up having to start all over. iPhones don't have this problem but every Android smartphone I've had since 4.3 has.
>>
>>61542266
get a longer aux cable then. Its worth it to keep it off the bezel
>>
>>61542291
Anyone with friends knows this isn't always an option.

Use Linage OS

or a proper password
>>
>>61542309
still worth it to keep it off the bezel

>>61542395
was this to me? Honestly i'd go for the extra GB which will likely pay off if you plan on using the phone longer than 2 years

No, 4X it's shit only good for absolute poorfaggotry
4 it's best price-performance and value
4 Prime it's slightly worse value but still pretty good, nice of you want something better than the 4 for a few bucks more

Is an iPhone a good choice for my 60+ old parents. They check mail, browse news and take pictures a couple of times a week

Yes

Moto G5+ or wait for the new S models
>>
>>61542784
Got any big cons for the G5+ and when is the S model coming out? Any other phones you would recommend for me to check out?
>>
>>61542924
No NFC but I never use that anyway. I would honestly just wait a bit longer, there should be a bunch of cheap SD660 phones coming out relatively soon
>>
>>61542744
is S7 really that superior to S8?
>>
What's /g/'s opinion on the Sony Xperia XA1 Ultra? Model G3226 is the one I am looking at.
>>
>>61543026
Well the S8 has a newer generation chip
>>
>>61543011
Any info on when SD660 phones coming out? Quick searching shows really nothing. Perfectly fine on waiting if it really is going to be better for the prince I'm looking for. But like most tech everything is better just around the corner.

They're going to charge damn near $400 for any phone with it, screencap this

The Nokia 7 was rumoured to have it, but not sure because they said the 8 would have it too, then shit changed again, but no one else has announced a SD660 phone

for all snapdragon variants, you can't. and the exynos variants wouldn't be worth it even if it was free.

What price are seeing for it? Mi Max 2 is probably a better buy if it supports your country's network bands
>>

And your budget? If it around 300, here's what I recommend:
Honor 8
Honor 6X
Moto G5+
Moto Z Play
LeEco Le Max 2
LeEco Le Pro 2
If you want an AMOLED screen and Daydream compatibility, get a used Axon 7 off swappa
>>
>>61543397

Somewhere around $405: https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.XSony+Xperia+XA1+Ultra+G3226.TRS0&_nkw=Sony+Xperia+XA1+Ultra+G3226&_sacat=0

The G3226 is for the worldwide market according to GSM Arena so it would work just fine in Poland:

I currently have my second Moto X pure (2015) that hit the shitter. I always break the charge port somehow.
I need a new phone and here is my list of requirements:
I'd be willing to spend $400
I want a type C usb for dat reversible/magnetic joocyness. I feel like every single phone I have ever owned I fucked up the microusb charge port
Camera mid tier to high tier quality. if possible better than moto x pure
Headphone jack needed
Nano-Sim GSM unlocked.
internal storage prob 16gb will work if it has sd card slot
what are some good recommendations? Don't really want a chinkphone/iphone.
>>
>>61543439
Helio P20 is comparable to a SD650/652, and pretty good on battery from what I hear, don't know how Dev friendly it will be though
>>61543456
Axon 7, you'll love it
>>
>>61543493
I just looked up the specs and this looks like a damn good phone. Any thing I should know about it? I;m gonna research the fuck outta it
>>
>>61543493
Actually the Helio P20 is pretty much Mediatek's equivalent of the SD625, performance and power efficiency is almost identical (so not as powerful as the SD650/652 but better in battery life)
>>
>>61543568
It has great developer support and it's ZTEs current flagship, the only other phone I'd recommend in your price range would be a used unlocked HTC 10(non-EVO)

>>61543584
It's more in between the 62X/65X on performance, and a little worse on battery than the 62X series
>>
>>61543436
I'll be looking up info on Axon 7. Looking like a nice phone for the price.
>>
>>61543568
It's a bit overpriced for the specs you get, the Mi Max 2 is a better buy IMO

>>61543657
would it even work with ATT straight talk? Chinkphones kinda add another level of complexity to buying

>>
>>61543775

Polish guy here again.

Do these China phones at least come with the language set to English or am I going to have to get a Chinese speaker to set my phone up?
>>
thinking about buying a used samsung.
in the usa
s6? s7?
or something else entirely?
>>
>>61543930
Global versions (and you probably want global because here in Poland carriers use B20) come in English out of the box (at least my Redmi Note 4 Global did).
Also, check the local online stores, I got mine chinkphone locally for same price as importing from China + tax (and it has 2-year warranty and 14-day 'did not like it' return and I also got it in 4 hours).
>>
>>61543622
>it's more in between the 62X/65X
Not really, like I said it's almost identical to the SD625 in performance. SD625 and Helio P20 both have eight low power A53 cores, whereas SD650 has four A53 cores and 2 high power A72 cores, SD652 has four A53's and four A72's.

If you look at Antutu scores the SD625 and P20 are both around 60k whereas the SD65x are around 80k. In Geekbench 4 single-core the SD625 and P20 score ~800 and the SD65x ~1400. In Multi-core the SD650 scores around 3000 (2 less cores than the other SoCs), SD625 and P20 get around 3600 and SD652 gets 4000.
>>
Ive had a oneplus one forever, I have broken the screen many times, I could replace the screen again for ~40 bux.

I cant really think of something that is worth upgrading to, any suggestions?

Chink phones are kinda a no go cuz usa.
>>
>>61544268
Just fix the screen
>>
>>61544185

If you're Polish what store did you use?
>>
>>61544351
I used 'powergsmpl' Allegro store because I wanted to get it before the weekend and it was the only cheap internet store with a physical store in Warsaw.
735PLN for real Global version.
You could get it a bit cheaper in some other store (maybe without warranty). Just be careful because a lot of internet stores are lying. E.g. selling '2/16 Redmi Note 4 with B20' which was in fact never produced by Xiaomi.
Also, with Allegro be very careful because some stores (the ones with long shipping time added somewhere in fine print and suspiciously low prices) send the phones from China. Then you gotta pay the tax if you are unlucky, get no or shit warranty and have to wait a long time.
>>
>>61544206
If you look up the Xperia X1 Ultra on Kimovil, antutu is 72.5k, that's a Helio P20
>>
>xiaomi, redmi, moto, Sony, Oppo, Asus all rumored to have SD660 phones

>only Oppo actually comes through

I HAVE SUCH HIGH HOPES FOR THE 660 WHERE THE FUCK IS IT
>>
>>61544524
I don't think Kimovil has the right scores, gsmarena tested 60k for the regular XA1 and 65k for the XA1 Ultra, and if you look around on the internet (just search "XA1 Antutu" on youtube for example) that's what most other people seem to be getting as well.
>>

It has the blue bubbles and girls cant tell the difference between the iphone 6 and the 7 anyway.
Im totally not kidding here, i dont care that much about my phone, its just a status symbol.
I just need it to shitpost on the toilet and while eating, plus obviously for phone calls and texting. So the hardware doesnt matter.
>>
>>61544902
If you have $360 to spend at least get something made in 2016-2017. Moto G5+, Honor 8 or Axon 7 for example, iPhone SE if it must be iPhone.
>>
>>61544902

>>61544948
Why though. Do you think (((they))) will slow the iphone down in a few years, so its going to be unusable?
There are faster devices, but for what do you even need that.
I find the idea of a portable mini computer you can fit into your pocket fantastic, but there is currently no device which has enough power and with the finger touch as input you just cant be productive.

they will tell you to find a better solution right after 2 days my man...you will have to resell the iphone and find one with an android
>>
>>61545188
It's eink.
>>
>>61545293
Because a 3 year old phone simply isn't worth paying $360 for. It's not just about performance, it also has worse camera and battery life, memory/storage etc. than most current midrange phones.

Like I said, if you absolutely want to get an iPhone get the SE, it has better performance, camera and battery life than the iPhone 6 and it'll get iOS updates years after support for the 6 has ended.
