If you want help:
>Assemble your parts list
https://pcpartpicker.com/
>State the budget for your build (and country if not the USA)
>List games/software you use often, as well as your monitor resolution + refresh rate
>Clarify your goal for build improvements: lower price or improved specs?
How to assemble a PC, select components & more (kind of outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php?title=Build_a_PC

CPUs:
No i5 unless discounted
>G4560/G4600 - Budget builds (<$500)
>R5 1400 - Cheapest quad core you can get (Ryzen 3 soon)
>R5 1500x - Good but up to 1600 if you can
>R5 1600 - Best value for higher fps gaming / mixed usage; 1600x if you want higher stock clocks
>i7 7700k - Only for 144hz
>R7/Used Xeon/Threadripper - Compute/Multitask/VM/mixed use; Not for just gaming

GPUs:
Coin miners have driven price up and stock down, waiting to buy a GPU might be wiser
>Integrated CPU Graphics - Desktop stuff and very light games
>GTX 1050(Ti) - Lower end budget cards, drop settings on newer games, RX560 beaten by both
>RX570 - 1080p@60~hz maxed, running most maxed older games at 100~Hz
>RX580 and GTX1060 6GB - 1080p@80hz maxed, 1440p@60hz at lower settings; RX580 better in newer games
>GTX 1070 - 1080p@130hz /1440p@60hz at high
>GTX 1080 - 1080p@144hz / 1440p@60hz maxed, 4k@60hz in a few games; Probably the highest end card you need for 1080p/1440p
>GTX 1080Ti - 1440p@144hz and 4k@60hz maxed/high in many games

RAM:
>Check your Mobo QVL before buying any RAM
>Ryzen CPUs benefits a lot from high speed RAM

General:
ALWAYS LOOK AT PRODUCT REVIEWS!
Always consider an SSD. Try buying a large SSD for what you'd pay for your SSD+HDD combined, and add a HDD later
NVMe SSDs aren't for a faster OS boot, they're for productivity/scratch disk/VMs. NVMe and M.2 are not the same thing, M.2 is a form factor.
The Ryzen lineup comes with surprisingly good stock coolers. consider using them over any <$30 cooler.

given two or more memory kits at the same advertised frequency, latency and price, is the choice pretty much brand loyalty at this point?
i've ordered the msi x370 carbon for my build and now i'm after some memories to put in there and basically i've found these three at the same price point:
>corsair CMK16GX4M2B3200C16
>corsair CMK16GX4M2D3200C16
>g.skill F4-3200C16D-16GVKB
when i look up the mobo's supported memory, no kit from the ones mentioned above appears exactly on the list
for crucial, the supported ones are CMK16GX4M2B3200C16R and CMK16GX4M2B3200C16W, the only difference being the W or R at the end, while the kit i've found in a store has nothing more after the "3200C16" part. could someone explain what the last character means for crucial memory?
then there's also the D or B part after the "X4M2" part, basically on crucial's website the one with D has msrp of 1000$, while the B one is only 170$, but in the store they are actually almost the same price, so what is the difference between these two?
and about g.skill, the kit listed on msi's site is F4-3200C16D-16GVRB, so once again a single character difference, ie. GVRB on msi's site vs. GVKB in store

would you recommend getting one of these? i wonder if i'll be able to hit 3200 mhz easily with one of these because the other similarly-named kits are listed as supported at 3200 or is it a lottery because these single letters in the name actually mean major changes between kits?
t. poorfag looking to save some bucks on the memory but still get proper 3200 mhz speeds

I got a new computer today. The computer is running but no video plays the screen says no signal and when I unplug the video cable it said "no cable connected" so it detects something at lease. Vie tried both vga and dmi both same result. The cables still work because they work on the old computer. And in checking in the case to see if anything is unplugged and everything is firm. What could I be missing? Is there any commonly missed plug in or commonly missed step? The manual said no assembly just plug and play.

Pic related is the inside

>>
>>61508182
so idk about x4m2 part so hopefully someone can answer you. but concerning corsair the last letters for corsair memory indicate heatspreader color. so R is red. W is white. make sure when checking qvl not to enter r or w or b when utilizing control f
>>
>>61508230
Installing Afterburner however I noticed that sometimes if I have 2 tabs of youtube videos, one runs fine with no problems and one stutters hard or even has the loading thing once I press play again, I am using 1080p
>>
>>61508279
thank you
so it is solely the color and the internals are all the same, or could there be cross-color differences?
>>
>>61508307
concerning corsair yes. its just color. i paid $10 extra i think on red heat spreaders and could have saved $10 if i had just gotten the regular black ones.
>>
anyone know how or where i can get a 1050 for less than $100?
>>
>>61508182
>g.skill F4-3200C16D-16GVKB
so i just looked up g.skill also gvkb also indicates heat spreader color.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16820231941

so here is that model of ram. as you click through the colors gv changes on every color.
>>
if a board's qvl lists some ryzen cpu as supported with some bios version and above, does that mean that if the board ships to me with a lower bios version i won't be able to do anything about that without a supported cpu at hand?
or it could still boot to the bios at least so i can update it from using some usb stick?
>>
>>61508398
oh well
i guess my google skills suck
anyways i think i'll go with the CMK16GX4M2B3200C16 because the gskill ones are much taller and i'd be worried if the stock wraith cooler plays nice with these
so always better to get the shorter memories i guess

But are you willing to pay $350+ for an i5 for a computer you'll be using for 3+ years when you can buy a $130 cheaper R5 1600 which will be more future proof, as even the new i5 8400 will be 8 threads and all game devs will be optimizing for moar coarz.

When you remove the GPU bottleneck, you begin to see just how terrible the core performance of Ryzen really is. 130fps less in Snipe Elite, for example. Zen is Bulldozer 2.0 even to the point where AMD fanboys will ignore tests that remove the bottleneck until suddenly they realize their brand new CPU can't keep up a year later, just like what happened with Bulldozer.

It's not all THAT complicated and you can find fairly good tutorials.

House computer for my parents, Video and movie watching, browsing, no real productivity or gaming.

i3-7100 -vp9, HEVC, 20 english dollars more than g4560, better iGPU and decent clocks.
ASUS ROG Strix B250I - wifi, nice sound chip, displayport from the board
HyperX FURY 8 GB DDR4 2400 MHz - dual channel is probably better for the iGPU
Corsair CX450M - Wendell said they aren't shit anymore
Samsung 850 EVO 250GB - not ponying up for an M.2

Case will be whatever mITX they like

Thinking of 27" 1440p60 IPS for the screen.

Anyone have advice, especially about the monitor or motherboard?

Intel doesn't drop the prices on previous gen CPUs, so you would almost certainly be better served getting either a Skylake/Kaby lake i7 or a Ryzen. Especially since, as you can see, the selection for z97 boards is getting pretty thin.

Ya, I figured it'd be DDR3 ram.
Alright, you -can- get a current gen i7 and a board that has DDR3 compatibility, but it's going to be the Z170 chipset, not Z270. You'll need to update the BIOS when you get it. Hopefully it boots with the CPU, as well... If not, I'm fairly certain newer ASUS boards will update the BIOS from a flashdrive as long as the BIOS is the only thing on it.

My plan is to upgrade at the same time, and the plan is to go from a 2TB to a 3TB HDD and 120gb~ SSD combo. I'll be ordering from newegg and was wondering about recommendations. my current budget is 125-160.

Also, what experience have you had with their refurbished parts? are the good to use?

Kinda wish I waited for Ryzen 3 to hit before building this FreeNAS box but AM4 mobos are kinda shit right now, esp for mATX. You gotta jump up to gamer grade shit to get 6 sata 3 ports. Seems like none of them come with Intel NICs which I guess is understandable but for FreeNAS intel NICs are the only way to go. Would be better if they do 1 16x slot and 1 4x slot which would really open up your NIC options but they seem to be all 16x and 1x.

Really wish this Asrock supported Xeon chips but according to Asrock it doesn't. Got the mobo/CPU/RAM for under 100 bucks. Just gonna wait to catch a higher spec 1151 CPU (i5 or i7) on sale. Really this rig only tanks when I run a VM for torrents/downloads but it will run just can't do much else with it while it's doing it. Guess i'll keep an eye out for another cheap stick of ram for it as well.

It's a chipset thing. None of them consumer-grade 1151 boards support Xeons.

Sorry for the late reply, I had to go to the store and picked up some pizza.

Ya, that's fine. The Noctua cooler is lightly better than the be-Quiet!, I chose the latter because it's quieter and fits into your desired black aesthetic. Same for why I chose the motherboard I did.

That RAM is slightly slower than the Corsair RAM, for only a few bucks saved, though it IS on that motherboard's QVL. So it's a toss-up, go for whichever. You're not likely to run into RAM compatibility issues anyway.

There's this one guy selling away Samsung EVO 850 2TB model for 450€ which have been in use for only few months.
Should I get it? It's still insanely high price for a storage drive but new 2TB SSD's are 680€ at that capacity.

I really just want to install Windows again after so many years and get rid of HDD's if possible but I also want 2nd monitor of same brand I currently have and that'd be 350€ and I'm quite poor so I can only afford one of these things for next 4 months.

I mean... it's a decent PC. The CPU is the biggest issue of all, though, because as Austin highlighted it'd only a dual-core. Yes, Hyperthreading, but still a dual-core. So games which require more CPU power, which is a lot of them, will be bogged down a bit. You can see GTAV for instances struggles for 60 FPS.

>>61513174
ASRock boards have been good for years now. You may not need the X370 chipset though, depending on what you're going to be doing. B350 boards are cheaper. Compare the chipset and motherboard features, should be apparent which one you'll need for your workload/usage.

Finally got my PC running, MSI Fuggahawk:DDD had an old BIOS that didn't recognize my R5 1600. This AsRock Fatal1ty B350 did it perfectly right out of the box. What are good temperatures for the 1600? I seem to idle around the low to mid 30s. I've noticed whenever I start up something from idle (I.E. open a browser/tab), I get a 10c spike that goes down rather quickly, is that shit normal? I get kinda concern seeing HWMonitor jump randomly like that, I've never experienced anything like it. I haven't ran aida64 yet but the highest I've got so far just running a few games heavily with recording programs is about low to mid 50s Celsius. I made sure to clean and reapply some thermal paste (arctic silver) since the numerous reseating attempts on the Tomahawk. Hopefully I put on enough and properly (a decent dab on the middle).

Would just like some reassurance, it's my first time building.

ALSO I've been trying to get my RAM to run the proper speeds in the BIOS but it seems to just cycle and nothing changes. Would it be wise to update the BIOS? Somewhat afraid of bricking my brand new build.

1) Use parametric filters as I have used in the list.

2) If you want tempered glass RGB memes, at least get the sensibly priced case.

3) Deathadder is actually a well-tracking mouse, the Mamba is shit. (http://www.rocketjumpninja.com/top-40/)

4) I guarantee you that you aren't doing a damn thing that benefits from the $100 price jump that the 7700k goes for over the 7600k. If you're going Intel and you're just gaming, the 7600k is a much better value, especially after getting a good overclock to match or exceed the frequency that a 7700k hits.

5) The Dell S2417DG > S2716DG due to the capability of reaching 165hz. They have the same feature sets otherwise, 2560x1440, Gsync, TN, 1ms, etc.

excuse my lack of knowledge, but what's ACTUALLY the difference between all the different variations of graphics cards? Like they have the "Power Color Red Dragon" 580 8 gig, but how is it (if at all) actually different from a 580 from a more well known name?
>>
>>61514791
https://pcpartpicker.com/list/rdKngL
lel, this is how I made it better.
>>
>>61514808
It's not. The only differences are subtle variations in board design, some of the bigger AIB partners like Asus will design custom/optimized PCB designs for that GPU, which may often involve beefier VRM, and an enhanced cooler, for slightly more reliable/cooler/quieter operation.

Since GPUs follow GPU maker specs (like RX 580 will use this chip and this spec of memory) the performance (ignoring slight factory overclocks) is always +/- 5% regardless of which AIB partner you go for.

The only thing to look out for is:

1) Blower card if space constricted case (Mini-ITX builds), open air if a standard mATX or ATX tower.

2) Keep in mind GPU width or length limitations, again only applicable for Mini-ITX builds, but not really for standard mATX or ATX towers.

3) Organize by lowest to highest prices, and filter anything out that doesn't have an average 4 - 5 star review. Get the cheapest product that's reliable enough.
>>
>>61514798
depends no what case you want and what features you want out of a board.
>>
Does anybody know whether the newegg refurbished HDDs are good? I was told thatthey are essentially working HDDs that were wiped and cleaned up with a warranty
>>
>>61514798
The only thing extra ATX has is potentially 3 more PCI-e slots.

The average /g/aming machine here only ever uses one (read: 1) PCI-e based product, and that's a GPU. The mATX having a 4 slots is still overkill and still allows for SLI/Crossfire nonsense anyways.

MicroATX cases tend to be smaller, tidier, and cheaper than ATX cases.

MiniITX cases, power supplies, and motherboards have a tendency to be more expensive than ATX variants and you pay for additional compaction of features.
>>
>>61514977
I wouldn't trust refurbished HDDs unless they were put into some kind of RAID array to begin with.

Normal HDDs are cheap enough these days, and you can get quality 3TB HDDs as low as $65 NEW.

If you're unwilling to go proper headphones + desktop mic or modmic, the HyperX Cloud II is the better headset.
Ducky Shine, Filco and Corsair make better keyboards.

Hitachi, HGST, and Toshiba tend to be the more reliable brands today. I have a feeling what you linked is refurbished as the seller states they are "white label" unbranded drives, and one person has already commented that 2 of 4 they ordered were DOA.

Hey dudes, my build is almost complete but I wanted to ask how much of a problem heat will be for this unit and case. I got get a larger, full tower one with vents on the front and back for better airflow but the PC's sound will be pretty loud.

In terms of the meaty parts I'll stick with what I have, unless someone can recommend a better motherboard for DDR4 3200 ram

Going to put the order in tomorrow but if there's anything someone can point out to be an improvement please do say so (If it costs a bit more it isn't a worry)

Hey guys, I was installing a brand new intel cpu (g4560) on my motherboard, cooler was kinda loose so I took it out to check the pins. I have a Define R4, cooling is fine. You'll want 2 intake fans in the front.

I still stand by you should get the Mini C, but it's up to you.
My reasoning for the Mini C:
Has 2 drive bay slots, you have 2 drives. Even if you need to add another HDD, you can just place the SSD anywhere.
More directly airflow with 2 intake fans from the front to the motherboard/gpu. With the radiator mounted to the top, that is.
Nice tidy package.
Assuming you don't need that cd-rom, of course. External players exist, though. ;)

>>61515725
That motherboard is fine. The only other one around the same price would be the MSI B350M Gaming Pro anyway.

>>
>>61515936
You need a bigger heatsink... and a bigger fan.
>>
>>61515785
Thank you! Most of my indecision right now is based on cases. I'll stick with the R5, and I appreciate your tips - my autism is just making it really hard for me to switch from a mid-tower to the mini, I feel like all the parts will be too close to each other. For the R5 I'll add another intake fan at the front so hopefully that does the trick for general airflow and cooling. I will be using the CD drive, going to burn and play discs with this one

If anyone currently uses an R5 case, did you add a side fan or just one fan to the front? Would you recommend adding a side-fan or will that fuck up airflow

My 3 year old r9 290 has been giving me trouble lately (occasional artifacts that go away after reseating it) so I'm considering offloading to some miner on eBay for around $200-$250 maybe a little more. Then using that to get a 1060 or a 580x because then even with the current gouging prices it'd be like 200 something for one after the eBay money.

Is this stupid? Should I just wait until prices go down again? Wait until new cards are released? Try and RMA the 290? I'm afraid it will die soon and I'll be stuck.

how good is the stock cpu cooler on ryzen 5s
>>
>>61517304
depends on which Ryzen 5.
The 1400 comes with the Wraith Stealth which is decent, but you won't be overclocking with it.
The 1500X and 1600 come with the Wraith Spire, which is excellent and can handle a mild overclock to 3.8 Ghz. Anything above that gets toasty.
The 1600X doesn't come with a cooler.

>>
>>61517729
name the games you play first.
The Intel i7 7700K is the FPS king at the moment, but sim games tend to favor more cores and more threads, so knowing the specific games can tell us whether you want AMD Ryzen or Intel 7700k.
Ryzen can't clock high but it does have 8 cores and 16 thread in it's highest consumer version at the moment.
The consumer i7 has 4 cores and 8 threads at the moment.

>>61517792
Connecting to the mobo won't work because the mobo connections require an integrated GPU. Those ports are there for the consumer release of the Raven Ridge APUs

Really depends on the application
I upgraded because my MSI 970 gaming board was on its last legs
Nice improvements overall especially in single threaded tasks like physics based indieshit (Kerbal space program, From the depths,...)
Most games didn't see much of an improvement as my 8350 was still powerful enough to not become the limiting factor
7-zip has gotten a lot faster, the system is a little snappier overall and the games that were previously CPU bound now run much faster
And power consumption is a lot lower on the ryzen

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/7hQLRG
After watching GaymersNexus's video on the 7700k vs 1700 for streaming, I've finally decided to go with ryzen since it meets my needs: streaming, rendering, and muh games.
Not everything is set in stone: >GPU prices keep going up. If 1080Ti prices drop I might consider it.
>no clue what memory I should go with: do I only need to pay attention to comparability? Or does timing also affect performance.
>might just end up using the stock cooler for a year and then buying an aftermarket cooler when I see a big sale again.

Anything I should change? Trying to keep the price under $2,000 for the time being.

I'm running on a i5 2500K and GTX 960 with 8gb RAM and plan on for several years before saving up for a more upgraded PC overall, all the games I play run decent enough on 1440p, save for pbug, which is hard drive and RAM intensive. 16GB of RAM is something I'm dreaming of right now and or new storage since my old two drives have been in use for 10 years soon and are full as well sluggish. 750gb and 500gb each.
I could just TRY and struggle with a 250gb SSD EVO I own already but haven't installed yet and instead buy a 200€ drawing tablet which I've never owned and something else. DECISIONS..
