You need to be curious, really.
I first installed it because I was curious, and a friend and I installed it on computers at home and would share some info too.

BTW this was back before smart phones, and we had to compile our kernel to get some devices to work.

SparkyLinux with Lumina
https://sparkylinux.org/lumina-desktop/
>>
Asking this again.

Installing Linux through Architect and it brings up installation types. Stable, and Developer. No matter what I choose the installation says its complete only giving me the option to reboot, shutdown, and lunch a virtual environment which is just a terminal.

What could be the deal?
>>
>>61482273
Virtual Machines, duh. Play around with Ubantoo for a while, maybe install it to a HD if you like it, then switch to a grown up distro like Debian or Arch.

Got a new SSD and reinstalling Debian. The firmware is non-free and have iwlwifi packaged in the bootable drive. This method always worked for me. But ever since the new SSD it's not working.

What's away around this?

Use a Debian image with non-free software: https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/

you could also just download the package and dependencies online and copy them over, then dpkg -i

I've tried this, there's no firmware packaged in here. It still asks.

>you could also just download the package and dependencies online and copy them over
This was my usual method of getting it to work, but this time it's failing.

Answering you again.

You dont need an installer, the default vanilla arch install is max 10 commands.Read the installation wiki and dont rely on some shitty script, which is currently broken in your environment

so i am a fucking dumbass, i installed opensuse on a 2011 macbook, in the installer i choose to replace a devuan installation with the opensuse one, now i have the partition scheme on pic related, the macbook starts and shows the folder with the classic fucking question mark so i booted opensuse on the hdd from the live cd (using linuxefi (hd1,gpt3).... and all that jazz) which i am now using to post this.
how do i tell the macbook start from this installation ? if i'm not wrong the first 200mb partition was left from a fedora installation which configured everything but i'm not really sure and i'm afraid to delete it/format it w/e

I installed Gentoo on my T420.

When I close the lid, it won't suspend to ram.

I enabled suspend in the kernel, and the s2ram actually works, so it's not like I don't have the suspend functionality on my install, but it won't suspend automatically when close the lid.

Has anyone had this issue?

It's also very easy to install software to browse the internet, do word processing/spreadsheets, and digital art. In some cases it's easier, because there's no paywall and you don't need "cracked" software either.

Bottom line, just jump in and try to use Linux to do everything you do on Windows. If you can't figure out how to do something, google it. It's not exactly hard to use, just different from what you're used to.

Hi /fglt/, i'm meme webdev and bad at sysadmin stuff.
I had some cheap vps of mine taken down because it got hacked and used as spam machine after i installed a bunch of services in an apparently insecure fashion.

I figured i should start monitoring wtf happens on my systems so i could hopefully get some kind of indication next time this kind of shit happens instead of manually looking into apache logfiles like a pleb every few months or so.

I'm looking into log management systems, i want some nice access controlled web ui displaying sweet graph porn of at least apache, maybe db logs + whatever else could be useful. I only have max 3 vps at a time.
What do i chose ?
So far i've looked into :

-munin : lighweight but seems more to be about perfs monitoring than security, also would need to learn perl to go anywhere
-elk meme stack : seems to do everything i need except it might be bloated and aimed at people with lots of machines, i don't want to pay 2x more server monies just for log monitoring
-goaccess : seems simple enough with nice ui but only werks with http logs
-a few other projects that handle specific parts of the issue but i need to look more into it

Is this a good approach ?
Pls halp and give advice.

So I had Ubuntu Mate installed on sda5, but when I installed Fedora I formated sda2 and installed it normally. Now I can't boot my Windows Partition. There is no entry in grub, and even on the UEFI menu.

do yourself a favor and learn some basic iptables. with superuser or root, run:
iptables -F
iptables -P INPUT DROP
iptables -P FORWARD DROP
iptables -A INPUT i -lo -j ACCEPT
iptables -A INPUT -m conntrack --ctstate ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
iptables other stuff you need, e.g. SSH

there's some basic crap, learn the syntax and adjust according to your needs. if you use IPv6, use same commands with "ip6tables". after these, install iptables-persistent and run configuration
dpkg-reconfigure iptables-persistent
to make sure all your rules are saved and available after reboot

My terminal is the main instrument to control my system and everything in it.

When I want specific information, I run a command, or even a function I've defined before to get simple, uncluttered answers for my questions.

When I want my system to do something, especially when I do it everyday, I write a script that does it for me.

When I need to rename a folder of 1k files, I just a command with wildcards and lean back while enjoying the show.

When I want to change a system setting, I don't want to search an icon, click a botton, find the correct tab and toggle a switch; I just run an alias in my terminal: thing-on, thing-off

Overall, using the cli is fast, efficient, flexible and the best thing: it feels like using a computer.

I'm the anon who asked about F2FS on Debian, apparently the official installer for Debian and Ubuntu won't support installing on it, but you can debootstrap it: http://fieldeffect.info/wp/debian-root-on-an-f2fs-filesystem/
For Ubuntu, you would just have to replace the Debian's repository with Ubuntu's, as you can see here in the documentation:

They're having a HN requests thread on Ubuntu right now, give it a try if you want. It's something Dustin Kirkland started doing recently, and it seems like it's getting results.

>>61495232
No reason to not stick with xubuntu if it is working fine for you. Instead, start using apt-get instead of synaptic, vim/nano/emacs/whatever instead of whatever text editor you're using, and just generally start thinking about terminal-first ways to go about things. The rest should come naturally.

If you really want to jump head-first into the terminal, Arch is a great distro. But understand you'll basically have to build your OS from scratch (not entirely, but that's what it will feel like). If that sounds intimidating, try building it in a VM.

>>61495122
Yes, you'll need to convert the VM image to RAW, dd that onto your primary disk using a live disk (you'll also need the image on somewhere other than your primary disk). You'll then probably want to resize your partitions to fill up your entire drive.
>>
>>61484446
If you don't want to segment out your work in VMs like Qubes does, Debian is a good choice. Debian stable has "old" packages but has one of the largest and most robust security teams out of any linux distro.

Use selinux too, grsecurity is said to be a meme by some people and not a meme by others, I'm not well-read enough in order to recommend it but selinux is definitely a good move.

>>61491438
The best precaution is definitely to not insall a bunch of services in an apparently insecure fashion. Like I recommended the other anon selinux+auditd would give you a better picture of stuff like this if you learn how to use it. Also munin is great not just for monitoring, but its monitoring capabilities can help you identify if some resources get used that shouldn't get used. Also snort is a good IDS, though having it on the same interface as the server you're running on is less secure.

Ignorance is bliss, Debian's 'security team' is one of the worst in the industry, even Ubuntu's is better. The fact of the matter is if you want a secure Linux desktop then you want RHEL/CentOS/Fedora which is why Qubes uses Fedora.

I use Debian primarily myself, for the vast package repository. Don't lie to yourself and others in the hopes of making them feel more secure.

This seems to be a very common pattern in these threads. Maybe GNUfags have poor reading comprehension?

Arc-dark is dark
Arc is light
Arc-darker is light with dark window elements.
Use Arc-grey for true autism.

Install xfce4-goodies, then use whiskermenu instead of the trash that comes by default.
remove the top panel as Xfce doesn't have a global menu, so it just takes up space.

I have been having random freezes on my Arch system. I have been trying to work out what is causing it. After reviewing journalctl messages from the last boot, this seems to be the culprit:

Activation via systemd failed for unit 'dbus-org.freedesktop.Avahi.service': Unit dbus-org.freedesktop.Avahi.service not found.

Pacman reports that dbus is in fact installed, so I'm unsure as to why this causes the desktop to freeze.

Any advice on how to fix this?

You could try removing that service file, avahi isn't vital to anything.
Although that really shouldn't cause your desktop to freeze.
>>
>>61502249
Why would that cause any sort of freezes and why do you think it's the culprit?
A service that didn't run since it doesn't exist won't cause anything to your system, and fuck Poettering for apparently assuming you have his stupid Avahi shit installed.

What other bonjour implementations are there for linux?
>>
>>61502413
It's perfectly fine to run your system without any bonjour service

I don't have Avahi installed too, but it's obviously not causing any problems.

>dbus is installed
Obviously it is. That's not saying dbus isn't installed. Read closer.

>how to fix this
Look elsewhere because that's not the problem.

Is kde on wayland as polished as gnome is?

I'm writing a little bash game and I want to add background music (--enable-music). Whats would be the best way to implement this? Which format should I use and what is a widly used player?

It's a really buggy mess. It's even slower, too.

Im doing the same thing right now, but does win10 run on a vm in linux very well and why do people consider ubuntu and mint basic? Do they just love configuring a perfect OS
>>
Why doesn't my vm work? It says it started but it doesn't show up in top. The vm was created through the gui on windows and I imported it with vboxmanage import CentOS.ova

vboxmanage startvm "CentOS 7 x64" --type headless
Waiting for VM "CentOS 7 x64" to power on...
VM "CentOS 7 x64" has been successfully started.

Also --verbose doesn't work (Syntax error: unknown option: --verbose)
>>
>>61503093
They are distros that were made with the purpose of having something working for non-veteran linux users. They're "basic" as in they still manage to have the tools already installed to do plenty of tasks that most normal people would want such as web browsing, watching videos, writing documents and the like.

Besides simple doesn't mean bad. Some people have been using Ubuntu for years and it's not like they're "stuck there" or anything like that, they just don't need anything else.

Also there is no perfect OS period. No amount of tinkering can make an OS perfect or even close to perfect. All OSes have glaring flaws.

I'd recommend 8.1 or 7 over a virtual machine instead. They run fairly ok for anything that is not games, I've been able to work with simple stuff on the Adobe suite over a virtual machine better than running it through WINE and that waas not long ago, when WINE was supposed to be mature enough to handle some newer shit.

what rss reader should i use? preferably something simple, maintained

Try installing Avahi.
Dbus has a retarded misfeature that tries to auto-start certain services if some other program or daemon asks for them.
>>
>>61502920
Use wav format and play it with aplay (standard ALSA player).

Avahi has nothing to do with his problem. See >>61502724.

And nothing happens when you don't have that program installed.

what is a good cli music player for gnu linux?

>>61503962
Although "GNU/Linux" /ɡəˈnuː slæʃ ˈlJnəks/ is often pronounced without the slash, Stallman recommends explicitly saying the word "slash" or "plus" in order to avoid the mistaken suggestion that Linux itself is a GNU package, as is the case with GNU Linux-libre.
