Just got off the phone and had a great conversation with Shane. I knew it would be good when he said "Good thing you called, i totally forgot who this watch belonged to". Turns out its (Lord Marvel) done and running very well. Very close to zero in all positions. Says these were the best watches ever made which was nice to hear. Shipping it out tomorrow and i should have it by Monday at the latest I'm sure.

His attitude is so fantastic it's heartwarming honestly. As weird as that sounds.

That is a Seiko LM Special 5206 or 5216 and they can typically be found on eBay or for a better deal but less buyer protection you can look on Yahoo! Japan Auctions using a proxy bidding service.

They are probably the cheapest vintage watch you can get with a high-grade automatic movement (the Seiko 52xx was Daini Seikosha's ETA 2892-A2 equivalent).

Pic related is another LM Special 5206 of mine.

You are actually quite wrong. There are a surprising number of semi-regular /wt/ posters with some pretty deep horological knowledge, more than you find in a lot of other popular watch forums which actually tend much more to mindless consumerism with little to no technical understanding of the movements themselves.
>>
I'm really curious how they got the day-of-the-week pusher to work on this thing. I wonder if you could adapt it to make a dive chronograph that you could actually use underwater.

Yeah, I know. some misalignment is expected, considering the age of the watch. I still enjoy it, looks better in person than my shitty phone camera can capture.
>>
>>61477855
Yeah, it does. The Seiko 5206/5216/5245/5246/5256 family of movements tends to be pretty reliable.

As with any vintage watch, however, you should do your own research into the model you are interested in until you know enough to judge the originality, desirability and condition of individual examples of that watch for yourself. Such knowledge is the only way to really avoid being ripped off when dealing with vintage watches.
>>

Excuse my autism, I now realize what you were referring to. I honestly don't mind, I may get a proper day date in the future, but this serves me fine for now.

The real mistake there is using the English day over the Moon day on a vintage weeb Daini Seikosha. The days of the week on my weeb Suwa Seikosha are:

>teepee
>house
>blue upside-down T

The twenty four hour watch uses a miyota 8xxx movement. Finishing is absolutely fine for the price point. The watch is certainly a gimmicky piece, but to be honest one of the better twenty four hour hand concepts I've seen (way better than all those slaved day/night fake moonphase). I'm definitely enjoying it for the 200 or whatever I paid.

There's also a moonphase which >>61480362

The movement is a Miyota 8217 I think. The movement itself just has the default finishing as far as I can tell, but the case back has some cool engraving. The rest of the case is okay, has brushed and polished finish in different places. The dial seems great for the price point though.

The moonphase is great. The disk itself has something like 300+ tiny stars all applied to the disk. I don't know how the dial is made, if it is porcelain or just ungodly high DPI printing, but it looks snazzy. There are also porcelain teapots in some of the promotional material but I don't read Chinese. Also has pointing date, and powered by a seagull 2108 if memory serves.

They do. As far as I am aware, Seiko Epson's only involvement with the Seiko watchmaking business today is in the manufacturing of quartz movement components for Seiko and Grand Seiko quartz watches and the quartz components of Spring Drives.

Seiko Epson also owns Orient, but Orient operates as an independent entity.

The modern primary watchmaking business of Seiko, including Grand Seiko and Credor is descended directly from Daini Seikosha and still uses many of Daini's movement designs (such as the 52xx and 68xx).

Ultimately, Seiko themselves recognised that Daini was the better mechanical movement designer and manufacturer of the two. It's also true that aside from Suwa's 5740C masterpiece, Daini's movement designs tended to be technically superior and much less prone to excess wear issues in the long term.

Multiple Daini Seikosha movement designs are still in use today by Seiko and Credor, and many former Daini employs joined the modern Grand Seiko. As far as I know no mechanical Suwa caliber remains in use by SII.

There is more to the story than that, but the rest will have to wait until I have time to dig it up.

What watch? You need to know the dimensions of the original bezel. If it is common enough, people will advertise that a bezel fits a watch.

Original is an Orient Mako. I believe it would be common enough to find someone advertising a bezel that fits.

Thank you!

There are plenty of mako mods you can check out on Watchuseek and (((Reddit))). Most of them should mention the source for the parts. Good luck!

- Alright, so I'll get a budget automatic watch, like a Seiko or Oris!

Probably above 50% of all water damaged watches that come into the store are Tissot, most one or two year old. Just this week I had a quartz chrono that was DOA, the keyless work was completely rusted shut. Despite Tissot using the in theory superior red plastic seals for casebacks the watch still got flooded through the crown (most rust was near the stem).

And since it's an ETA G.10 movement it cannot be disassembled, therefore cannot be repaired, it's literally a 40€ disposable quartz movement in a 3-400€ watch, fucking Tossit!

i was wondering about that

from - http://www.bbc.com/future/story/20160408-buzz-aldrins-plan-for-a-permanent-presence-on-mars

diamond-encrusted crescent-moon-and-star combination on his middle finger

“Now this is a typical symbol not of Turkey or Islam,” he says, “but having gone to the Moon and written a story about travel between stars, it became quite appropriate to different parts of my past and history. But the star is really not as significant any more so I need to round that off and put a ruby in it for Mars.”

It's not about winning. You can't just alter the meaning of a nationally recognized symbol on a whim, even if you did go to the moon. Most people are going to think "Islam" when they see it, and rightly so, because that's what it fucking stands for.

many watches may last that if you're lucky enough.

if battery changes do not count as service, some digital watch like a g-shock would probably be the safest bet

but really, you can't get any advanced technological device and expect it to function for the next 70 years without any service. that is enough time for a lot of shit to happen. not even a basic tool could be guaranteed to last that long if used a lot.

I guarantee you nobody had any clue what you were talking about. Perpetual either refers to a date that doesn't need to be adjusted, even for leap years, or in the case of Rolex a self-winding mechanical watch that winds itself by your arm movements rather than needing to be wound by hand via the crown.

I suggest you start by looking at Bulova precisionist. They have a sweeping second hand and are quartz which it sounds like a better fit for you. If you really want a used Rolex go to a reputable jewelery store (not a pawn shop, eBay, online forum, etc - you, no offense, obviously do not have the expertise to buy from such a place without being ripped off). Expect to pay at least 3-4k USD.

Orient is very good value for the money (which has as much to do with its low cost as it does its quality). The Bambino is a well-loved example from orient. If you like the style you can't go wrong for the price. In particular orient's in-house movements are widely reported as very well-regulated straight out of the box.
