Would I be better off buying a ~$80 portable dac/amp and using it with a cheap flac player or android phone(I have a moto e sitting around somewhere) or just putting all of that money into something like a FiiO or one of the chinese portable media players?
(Totally unrelated but while typing this I came up with the idea to make an android ROM that basically turns the phone into a media player first, wouldn't that be cool?)
>>
>>61292142
If you need physical buttons, the dap would be better, if you need streaming services, the phone would be better.
>>
>>61292230
I wasn't as clear as I should have been.
I'm saying is an expensive PMP a better buy than a cheap one(or a phone, doesn't matter) and an external
portable dac/amp?
How good is the sound on most of these commonly suggested devices? I would use it with sensitive IEMs on the way to work( I take the bus) but around the house I'd probably use it to drive my dt990s.
>>
>>61292275
>How good is the sound on most of these commonly suggested devices?
Well my x1 can power any iem and sensitive headphone just fine without any hiss, but only puts around 8mw into 300 ohms.
It's enough for my hd600 to be listenable, but I doubt you could power anything at 600 ohms. I'm pretty sure an external dac/amp would do a much better job at powering devices, you can look up the power output of most daps and dac/amps online, so you can see for yourself which would be more powerful.
The sound on most of them are just fine, you mostly just need to be careful about the output impedance, the ruizu x02 has a very high output impedance which will change the sound of most things. Hopefully that answers your question
>>
>>61292360
It does.
I'm leaning towards an ipod with an ssd/battery mod because it's easy to rubber band to something like a fiio q1.
How does high output impedance affect sound?
Just yesterday I learned how to figure out the amount of volume an amp can deliver through a given headphone so I'm a bit green.
>>
>>61292454
>How does high output impedance affect sound?
Wherever the iem has an impedance spike, that area will be less emphasized through a device with high output impedance. I'm pretty sure nwavguy made a post about output impedance somewhere. I have to go to work now, so I won't be able to answer anymore questions for 8 hours

DAC/Amps like a Fiio Q1 or E17K give you flexibility. Use them as a DAC at home, use them as an amp with analog input, use them as a portable DAC/Amp strapped to your phone... whatever the fuck you want. PMPs usually also have good sound quality, but you forgo flexibility for a more convenient package. For me, the "better buy" is a DAC/Amp because I can use it as part of my home hi-fi.

these threads and my phones volume buttons dying recently really got my attention for a nice cheap pmp again. but looking around the only thing I come across for some sane price on local second hand places, thats rockboxable with card slot, is a cowon d2, and it doesnt seem all that neat with no skip buttons and a touchscreen.

is it really that hard in current year to get a cheap worthwhile rockbox pmp

Why do you say that? I don't even remember why the book is in the image.

So outside of a desktop solution and relegating my dragonfly to my phone there are tons of good options for a portable amp and finding the PMP to plug them into for use on the go would be trivial.
The Topping NX3 can do 34mw@250ohm, the FiiO Q1 can do 44mw@250ohm. Both $70.
Once you're at $70 you may as well just spend the $89 on a bstock magni but that leaves me with just the dragonfly for on the go, which I could sell if I went NX3/Q1.
So many options I'm paralyzed by choice. Need to do something though, dragonfly can't drive dt990 250's.

Anyone know some of the best rockbox themes? Also, is there a way to make text black on white so it's readable on light/dark backgrounds? I'm gonna start using my Sansa Fuze+ my grandmama gave me free during work, just doing some configuration… I got a 32gb SD for it real cheap so it's ready for the little bit of audio I'll keep on it. Oh and the screen cover is made of plastic and has already scratched on me… Blah. No big deal, not like I'm using the thing for video with the god awful display it has.
>>
ive had my clip+ close to 7 years, im wondering whether I should get a clip zip as an upgrade or something bigger in size like a Fuze or Fuze+.

I've also got the Rocker, got it last week. Well, it's not exactly the rocker, it's Benjie T6 - which is the same device and I'm using the Rocker firmware.

And I've also got a cassette deck.

The Rocker isn't hooked up to the cassette deck, though, my autism isn't strong enough to take that step.

Not gonna lie, my Clip Fuze+ with the touchpad is awful compared to real physical buttons… I recomend going away from it unless it has some major feature you'd love to have.

Rockbox works well beyond crashing occasionally, though.
>>
>>61293456
Nice buy, I actually have one (mine's red). Awesome value for $2. Battery doesn't last more than two hours and sound is decent but not great and it doesn't power anything more than normal headphones. Still, I really love mine, the size and weight and the fact that it's got a clip on the back makes it a totally perfect device for jogging, lifting, walking to the store and back and so on.

The rather short battery-life is it's biggest issue. It's one amazing value apart from that little detail, it really is impressive that they manage to make a totally fine music player that's cheaper than a cup of tea. I actually use mine a whole lot, partly because it's so small and partly because I choose this over my better but way more expensive player when there's even a small risk that it could get stolen (like when I shower at the gym and so on).

>>
>>61296772
Screen is dogpoo, but it does have colors so you're right to that extent. Micro USB will mount the Mini SD and internal storage simultaneously.

But yeah, other than power and volume buttons, the "physical controls" are harder to use than a phone touch screen, and there's no feeling a touchpad in a pocket. I'm this guy btw: >>61295356

>>
>>61293220
Unless the player is some seriously bad chink shit it's the headphones that primarily determine sound quality.
>>
>>61293220
>does the quality of the sound depend on the player or the headphones?

Both. The headphones is where you want to invest the most but you need a good enough player to drive them. A $3 player is fine for a $5 pair of earbuds and there's no point in getting a pair of $1000 headphones for a $3 mp3 player. Just go with some combination where the headphones are 2x the player or something like that and you'll be fine.

any good cheap pmp with bluetooth?
>>
>>61296321
>>61297961
The Benjie T6 aka AGPtek Rocker that I posted a picture of above has Bluetooth (can be both sender and receiver).

I think it's good but you should take that with a grain of salt since I've just had it one week.

Further, at $40 it's not that cheap compared to things like the Ruizu 02 (but that one doesn't have Bluetooth).

Also, it's a bit heavier than I thought it would be.

If I had to hazard a guess, I'd say it was just the cheapest thing they could find in bulk. They have a contractor that set the whole thing up with the software, the mp3's, the special charger racks in each housing unit. The only real drag was inmates had to pay like $60 for something that costs 1/4 that on the street. For prison it was pretty nice though.

Since when has media solely referred to music? Games and Video have their place here as well.

>My Vita does all that and better.

The Vita is a great device don't get me wrong. The homebrew development is still too early to consider it over a PSP though. Plus the first generation was awfully clunky, and those are usually the only ones you can still find with firmware versions that can be exploited for emulation. Not to mention the absurd price of the proprietary memory cards.

(I own both)

Bringing new ideas and devices to the thread. Being limited to music players is a little tacky. At that point you might as well take these threads to /mu/.

>>61305100
Yeah, this relies on a few things though when dealing with the vita. You must be on the correct device version, if not then you're out of luck as there is no way to downgrade yet (to my knowledge). You will also need a psp game installed from the store too to allow adrenaline. Which you should have installed before the next vita update came out. If you havent done this you will have to find a way to move a game onto the device through Sony/Playstation software. Which requires your vita to be on the latest version to run. Assuming you have gotten all of this, you will need to run henkaku. God forbid you turn it off or a game crashes while you're away from an access point, there is no way to run this quick restore offline yet. The PSP is more hassle free overall.

>>61305109
I've heard this a lot actually. It seems like my vitas battery dies in hours where as my psp has been in standby for days on full charge and only went down to ~70%

>>61305220
3.60 MB is $30. You have to pay but it's not as bad as the PS3.
PSP demos and minis work, so that one is easy.
Enso is coming in a few weeks.

Just about any Vita can last for weeks in standby. You got a dud battery or it's bugged.
>>
>>61305436
>weeks
try more than a month, that is if all wireless is off
>>
>>61305220
The battery is fine, the problem is that Henkaku still has a bug that fucks up the memory card access if you leave it on sleep mode for a while. I don't think it happens if you use Adrenaline to go into PSP mode, but it's annoying as fuck if you're running pirated Vita games and you forget to save before leaving it.

Hi guys, I got the Benjie T6 aka the AGPtek Rocker last week.

So far I've been happy with it but today I put some Ogg Opus oga files on the SD card and popped it in and the player arrogantly told me that these newly added music files were in a

UNKNOWN FORMAT

It's OGG OPUS, the best lossy audio format there is and also the best format for grabbing audio off YouTube kpop music videos in many cases.

NO OGG OPUS SUPPORT? THIS IS A TOTAL SCANDAL, WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?

I converted them all to flac since that doesn't add any additional loss, but I am very disappointed and I find this lack of Opus support disturbing.

I had an issue years ago with my modded ipod, there is a problem with Rockbox mods not being compatible with hardware mods like the internal SD card. My issue was different though, my ipod would always freeze up and stop playing the music in the middle of songs constantly for no reason leaving me with a blaring noise in my ears. I did a lot of poking around on the forums and found this thread, whatever they changed in this specific version fixed my issues and I used that version for several years until I recently fucked up my ipod. Try poking around on the rockbox forums to see if there's better support for hardware mods these days.

>>
>>61306973
As the guy above stated, battery is one of the issues.
Some of the others are:
-Lack of physical buttons to control playback without a screen
-The ability for some DAPs to double as amp/dac for your computer
-A marginal increase in SQ due to more audiophile-friendly chips
-In some cases a smaller and more solid form factor
-Gain control
-More flexible storage, as you can probably put much more lossless onto a device that doesn't need to store app data and photos

Alright, some more information about the Benjie T6 (aka agptek rocker).

This player CLICKS and POPS when playing .flac files from ffmpeg with -compression_level 12.

THIS IS A TOTAL SCANDAL.

flac files made with -compression_level 6 are only slightly larger and play perfectly. I'm not sure what it is about compression_level above 10 that makes this player upset (files made with 9 seem to play fine too, I use 6 just to "be safe").

Further, ridiculously large album art added with easytag DOES NOT SHOW UP in the player. jpg's at 1749x1227 and resolutions like that are just flat out ignored.

THIS IS ALSO A TOTAL SCANDAL.

.jpg files that are 640 pixels wide (640x449 etc) do show up just fine.

Yep, they are very old Koss Porta Pro's from before they started making them with a very thin flimsy cable and a weak plug.

My brother "borrowed" these and I bought a new pair since he tends to confuse "borrow" with "gift" and the cable on those newer Porta Pro's ripped apart in no-time.

I strongly recommend against buying new Koss Porta Pro's.

>got a Benjie t6

Yes. I've posted about it in this thread already.

Doesn't play Ogg Opus files. Clicks and pops on flac files with the higehst compression-rate 12 generated by ffmpeg.

It's got about 8 hours of battery life, not the most impressive playtime but it's enough.

>>61310938
Perhaps.
>>
>>61311680

sure its not your flac encode ?

flac quality settings should be disabled cause it tricks every one of us autists who MUST tinker... the difference between setting 6 and setting 12 is a few kilobytes but double the compute time....

A TOTAL SCANDAL
>>
>>61312343
how do u format a sansa clip plug
>>
>>61312343
>sure its not your flac encode ?

FLAC files made with ffmpeg with the highest (12) compression level play just fine in audacious and mpv. This indicates that no, it's not my flac encode. Further, the exact same ffmpeg binary creates flac files that do play just fine on the Benjie T6 as long as I don't use a too high compression setting.

I haven't made any flac files in ages and I don't think I bothered to set that flag when I did. All other flac files seem to play just fine on the Benjie T6. I did make a few today because that play does not play Ogg OPUS audio files - which IS ALSO A TOTAL SCANDAL - and that's when I looked up the fine manual.

I have not tried to play those flac files on phones or much else, so I don't know if it's a general problem. I just found that it made the Benjie T6 totally freak out and made new flac files with lower compression.
>>
>>61312548

Really activates your almonds, doesn't it?
We all want feature-rich DAPs, but the power of Android brings such an absolutely paralyzing amount of features to the table. So many to the point where the point of the DAP is lost and it turns into a slightly shittier phone.
If you're gonna put Android on your Chinkshit, you gotta take advantage of how malleable it is and use a stripped-down version, for sure.
What's most of the Chinkshit using? Some form of Linux?

Not stupid at all, SBCs will be the PMPs of the future without a doubt. We just need a SBC with a decent DAC to kickstart this, and humble enough spec not to eat battery life for no reason, and then it'll become the norm.

The Rpi Zero is the best starting point, it's among the most power efficient, and there are a couple small, affordable and decent DACs, like the PHAT DAC. Hopefully it won't be too long before someone realizes a music oriented SBC would be goat.

>>
>>61336177
>Limited I/O (don't know if a dac and a screen can both be used)
After using the I2S you should still have an SPI port and I2C available for a display.
You could also always use a simple USB DAC.

You can get smaller SBCs than the Raspberry Pi Zero that still offer USB ports (though some have much lower specs). You can just take one of those and use it with a USB DAC. How much RAM/processing power does an PMP need anyhow? I think some 32 bit microcontrollers now days are more powerful than the SoCs used in old MP3 players.
>>
>>61339651
But the Zero already got an USB port. Unless you'd like to keep a free port for pen drives and shit.
And you might find other SBCs with smaller surface but I haven't seen one as thin yet. Which I'd say is more important if you want to make something compact yourself.

>How much RAM/processing power does an PMP need anyhow?

>>
>>61339745
>And you might find other SBCs with smaller surface but I haven't seen one as thin yet.
About any SBC can be just as thin as any other, you just desolder the ports. There's no reason to keep the ports on it if you aren't going to use them. There are even some smaller SBCs that don't even come with ports on them from the factory and instead just have holes on the board for an IO header like the Pi Zero.
>>
>>61339800
Fuck desoldering on a tiny crammed multilayer pcb with SMD parts

>even some smaller SBCs that don't even come with ports on them from the factory and instead just have holes on the board for an IO header like the Pi Zero.
That sounds like some obscure shit without support / or expensive.
>>
>>61339745
Holy fuck just looked up and it's 5mm.
Imagine adding something on top of that.

Using SBC is nice if you just want to rig something together but for practical usage I'll stick to purpose-made designs.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about these, it's basically a crippled phone with a high-end DAC/AMP solution.

My instincts tell me that this one and players like it will have a few obvious problems,

-> I like my PMP because it's got a small form factor
-> It will probably break as easily as a phone will, they probably didn't put a Gorilla Glass 5 or something like that on it - and even so, it's a disaster waiting to happen. My PMP has taken many beatings in it's time and it's fine.
-> Looks like there's no physical buttons on it either.

The only advantages it has over a phone would be the DAC and AMP, it seems to miss the rest.

>>61331950
This one looks more like a music player, but what's with that silly button layout? I'd probably get used to it but it looks a bit silly.

>>61332182
> will not convert
Huh? If a AAC MP4 file is playable (=not totally corrupted) then its also convertible. Just use ffmpeg, it'll convert anything to anything else. m4a music files from yotub downloaded with youtube-dl convert just fine. I don't recommend converting to MP3, though, do FLAC if you can. It won't be perfect since the source is AAC but you won't get any additional losses.

>>61332587
> encoding my CDs to .ogg rather than .mp3
First of all, you rip CDs to FLAC - which is actually lossless.

Secondly, OGG is a file CONTAINER which used to mostly be used for Ogg Vorbis audio. These days OGG Opus is the better choice for .oga files (same as ogg, but it's more convenient to call ogg audio only files oga since they can have both audio and video).

Rip CDs to FLAC and store them as FLAC and if you really need another format for some reason (storage space restrictions, player doesn't play FLAC) then just convert to the best format you're player is able to handle. That's probably not Ogg Opus, pmp's don't play it and some Android phones (looking at you, Xioami) don't. Use AAC if it's newer, MP3 if it's very old.
>>
>>61342460
>do flac if you can
If it won't play it as mp4, why would it play as flac?
Also I needed them to be mp3 for other reasons.

I need a loud radio with bluetooth so I can listen to my degenerate music. They provide the wattage for speakers but I don't know how that translates.

I've been just using a bluetooth beanie but it's too damn hot now, and it's not really loud enough either since it doesn't seal around your ears well.
