Saves from death on previoud thread:

Is x270 or x1 carbon better for school?
I know the specs in the 270 are better, but is it outdated in any way that will slow it back down? I like how the Carbon is advertised as very rugged, is this true??

NOTE: I'm buying new, I'm looking for a good machine that will last a long time. These two machines are about the same price (~1300 with EPP)

X270
-------
i7-7500
16Gb
512Gb ssd

X1
-------
I5-7200
8Gb
256Gb ssd

>>
>>61240941
Again, what do you want it for?

Both are pretty new but use intel u cpus that are low voltage, so performance hasn't really increased since sandy and ivy bridge. igpus will be much better tho.

There's barely any difference in real performance between mobile i5s and i7s cpus, both are dual cores with hyper threading.

Since you are going to chose between a x270 and x1 carbon, I guess you are looking for something portable and with good battery life. You should go to notebookcheck and check the reviews on each model and make up your mind.

Personally I'd get something with a good, big resolution ips display, good battery life, a ssd as big as possible, nvme if possible, and 16gb of ram.

i5 vs i7 I don't care. there's not much difference.

Nah, i still have the glawk fowty, the 14" T42 and the 380ED

The R52 was later painted white as the snowpad, but was scrapped for parts when i needed a new screen for my T42, i also stole the cooler so i could cool the ATI chip, the fan is also quieter.
The 15" T42 i got for like 10$ on ebay but it was a misleading post and it came with pretty much no guts except for the motherboard and screen connectors, not even a pcmcia rack in there, couldnt be assed to rebuild it.
The R30 had the HDD die and when i tried to install Windows 2k on a new hard drive, i discovered the entire time ive had the bios has been locked, so i couldnt install a new OS.
The X41t had a BGA failure after i tried to play Minecraft 1.11 on it, trying to turn it back on made a nice little puff of magic smoke.
The Thinkcenter was used as my PC case for a long time before i replaced it with a new case, i kept it for a while but it really just ate up space.

I feel bad, but the more important machines live on.
380ED because its almost as old as i am, T42 because its a fucking trooper and was my first thinkpad, and g40 because "lul thicc"

I don't know why you fags think ULV processors are still worse than whatever they put in an X230, they're significantly better now, plus since it's a low voltage chip you can get 12 hours easily instead of the 3 hours you get from your old laptop.

Hello /g/ents.

Finally bit the bullet and got myself an X220. Absolutely hyped. However, I have several questions regarding the laptop:

I would like to underclock it. Since it only runs WPS and XPDF when I work, I don't need 3.1 GHz. Is there a way to save battery even more?

Secondly, I would like to install a faster SSD (currently an ADATA 500 series 240GB) and I'm intrigued by the promise of miniPCIe-mounted SSDs. Is there a way to check that my model is compatible? Or has the X220 always had this function?

Thanks, guys.

Why all the butthurt?

From what I can tell, PassMark uses total performance, whereas UserBenchmark uses weighted scores for single and multi-core benches. It would be disingenuous to only rely on one benchmark's results, anyway, so I'd expect real-world results to be somewhere in the middle.

Lubuntu is the easiest and most lightweight, if you are the kind of guy who likes to build his own home then research into Devuan netinstall (as in barebones installation) and experiment with window managers. There is nothing else you need unless you are a hardcore user and know about differences between package managers.

Ok guys, what's the best ThinkPad I can get that has no management engine? I already have an R60 but I'm looking for something that isn't so thick and heavy, and that has better battery life. I already have a T400 with Libreboot installed but the display and battery life are terrible, so I use it as a desktop to shitpost and play games. Also what OS will maximize my battery life? I'm not going to use Windows and hackintoshing OS X 10.6 onto my T400 just ran like shit and gave me the worst battery life, also no programs were available. Any good GNU or BSD distros that are ultra power efficient?

Got a problem with my StinkPad 1920x1080 T510 display. I got what looks like a block of dead pixels in a straight vertical line, thing is I'm not sure if it is actually some dead pixels or something else.

If I put my mouse cursor over it, then move my screen around, I can see that the black dots are 'behind' the display if that makes sense, like they appear to be behind the pixels. I've not really noticed dead pixels looking like that before, is there a chance it's something else?

Utterly shit and embarrassing. Well, it's not too big of a loss because laptops with 4th or 5th generation core CPU have shitty (island type) keyboards anyway and generally laptops from that time are shit except Getac (all laptops) and Panasonic's Tougbook lineup.

Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.

No there are literally the same textured stickers as the default trackpad sticker
Phone screen protectors don't work

It depends on what you use, its very useful if you do a lot of drawing like me.

I am intern at a tech company and I was given ThinkPad T450 for work. I never thought a laptop could be so comfty. I am definetly going to buy one once I have enough money.

X200 or X220 for watching video both hooked up to a 1080p monitor and natively? The buyer's guide said the X200 might struggle. All I really want to do with it is browse the web via wifi, use a few programs, and possibly mess around with trannyboot.

Good evening gentlemen.
I just fell for the meme and bought myself a used T420 - great visual condition, everything works etc.
Is it normal to hear some amount of coil whine coming for the motherboard? It mostly happens when "Device Access" light is blinking (no. 1 in pic related). I'm almost certain it's not from CPU or the hard drive (I replaced it to SSD as soon as I got home).
>>
>>61260663
The X200 will struggle. I love the thing but the X220 is just so much smoother to use and won't have any problems doing that.
>>
>>61260945
To my knowledge it's not capable to remove the Intel ME from the X220. How bad would the X200 perform with 720p/1080p video if I was using Arch installed to an SSD?

I have no idea what I am doing, I'm starting my degree this year and I'll be needing a portable device, programming is part of my aspired degree but I've never done it. You guys seem like knowledgable people so please help me out.
Budget: 350 - 400€
Location: Germany
Size: Something I can carry around in my bag!
Performance: Browse the internet, do some basic things in photoshop, maybe play basic games like Touhou or Osu!
Thanks guys.

I get some coil whine when the CPU is at 800mhz idling on the desktop. it is very faint
>>
I had to return a Thinkpad T410 this morning... seller took out the 1440x900 panel and put in a shitty 1280x800 in it's place. The model says it comes with a 1440x900. The seller says oh after further research the model appears to come with both types. I call bullshit! Also the wifi didn't work either... at least it's free return shipping that's nice!
>>
>>61261111
Ye you're probably right..
I'm using an Arch based distro and SSD at least and it struggles..
>>
when it says the hard drive caddy isn't included on used thinkpad postings...does that mean you can't secure a hdd internally or what?
>>
what's the cheapest/least powerful TP i can use to plug it to a tv and watch movies online?

can i find some with a busted screen for cheaper?

thanks

Whats the lowest I can go in terms of model if I'm going to use the Thinkpad literally only for wed developement, web browsing and downloading stuff?
>>
>>61263551
I actually want the best possible compromise on a GNU/Linux tablet
>>
>>61263586
for wed development I'd go for some 3rd gen intel and newer, for mon and tue dev you can use it, too, then. For thur to sun dev you need something newer, though
>>
>>61263586

i'd say t400, x200 and w500. anything below that and you're stretching it.
>>
>>61263607
oh you want a tablet? Depending on what you want to do it. I have a x220 tablet, works for me. But you probably want something newer?

I know is no thinkpad but I wonder if someone knows where to find bios update for a Lenovo 3000 C200
>>
>>61263713
My only issue with the x220 is the screen resolution. But what is actually the downside between the thinkpad yoga (not consumer yoga) and the x220? Isn't the thinkpad yoga even considered the direct successor?
>>
>>61240904
I found a X201 with 4GB of RAM and a 250 HDD for $99. The listing says the battery is in good condition. Worth it?
>>
>>61241263
X200T just got added to the Respects Your Freedom list. I recommend picking one up, along with the recommended replacement wifi card, then putting libreboot on it
>>
>>61242148
I liked mine until I got an X220T and stopped having patience for the awful screen of the T420. Also had some thermal throttling issues, not sure if that was permanent. Seemed fine a few months later.
>>
>>61263681
you're a fucking unfunny retarded moron
>>
Just found out the T420 comes with a fingerprint reader. It actually sounds like a great way to lock my computer but is it safe to use with Windows? Also is the software for it resource intensive?
>>
>>61263779
don't think yogas are a direct successor to the x2xx line.
>>
I realize this will sound entirely retarded but...I want an optical drive. The trouble is barely any laptops can fit one that also have an IPS screen.

I'm considering getting a T440 and replacing the screen. Has anyone done the same? There's so many screen replacements I don't know which to choose...
>>
>>61263780
go for an X220, X201 are starting to show their age

So E6430 is preferred over E6420? Amazon reviews of the 6430 make it sound like they did some bad cost cutting with that model while I've always heard good things about the 6420

Found a t420i in good state for 100€, should I buy it?
>>
>>61264256
That's not important because I don't live in the US, so even if I have a numeric password they can force me to reveal it. I just don't want Microsoft getting my fingerprints or having to run a heavy program on background to unlock my computer

They don't have iGPU meaning that if your dGPU fails then you are fucked. It's better to have both of them for reliability and longevity of the machine IF the dGPU shits itself.
