Hello,
I installed awesomeWM on muh x220 running ubunt (Linux(((GNU)))).
It is kinda comfy and nice, but I have some problems:

wait, that pic really triggered people enough to get deleted one way or another?
>>
>>61212096
Check the docs you probably have to set the key functions by hand.
>>
>>61212096
You sure you're just not binding them incorrectly? Or expecting them to just work without actually binding them? In WM's typically those special functions (like volume controls or brighntess) won't work without you actually specifying you want them to.

I don't think Fn keys even behave like a normal modifier (like shift, alt, or ctrl) so there is no "Fn+<key>" options.
Those special functions like volume/brightness controls all have their own bindcodes. For example for my volume controls on my laptop I press Fn+F* to use them, but there is no "Fn+F5" or whatever. They are just treated as single entities, not combinations. E.g. for mute on my laptop the bindcode comes out to just 121. For lower volume it's 122, and for higher it's 123.

When I swapped some time ago from being a disgusting mentally ill windowsfag to Linux (arch), I was struggling to set shit up reading the wiki, and I done goofed and somehow configured systemd to connect to some loopback instead of my wifi connection on boot.

Temperatures typically drop pretty quickly. That wouldn't really be indicative of what the temperatures were when it happened.
>only some glib GObject critical assertion errors
That shit happens all of the time.

By "reboot", do you mean a normal reboot where you can see systemd closing all of the services, or a hard reboot, where it immediately turns off and starts booting again?
If it's the latter, it may be that your PSU crapped out for a moment or something. Just wait a while and see if it happens again.

Because GOG sells you ownership of a copy of a game. You pay for it, download, burn on a disc and forget about GOG.
Steam is a rental service. You do not own the game you paid for, you rented it.

I have a serious question. Is there any reason to use a specific kernel (4.4 4.8 4.10) in terms of security? while security is important, I don't want to compromise stability just to get it.
if it helps, I have pretty old hardware (1st generation core i3, c. 2010)

P.S: yes, I googled this, but all I got was evens are stable (4.6 4.8 4.10) while odds are experimental (4.5 4.7 4.9). there's no mention of differences in performance/security/stability between the versions.

>>61215822

>>
>>61215845
If you want security use a distro that cares about that.
If you want stability use a kernel version from the stable branch.

Just find a distribution that combines both.

SInce your hardware is 7 years old you really have no reason to focus on bleeding edge kernels

Oh no. I tried to make linux-hardened 4.12.a-1 work on my arch laptop, but I'm a bit stuck now. I already figured out that I have to use nvidia-304xx-dkms in order to make it work. For this to become effective, I have to use dkms autoinstall for the hardened kernel. For some reason, the build of the nvidia module keeps failing. According to some nvidia forum thread, this happened before to gentoo guys and they fixed it by disabling ccache for the build process. However, this did not help me. Is there any way for me to find out the actual cause or should I give up?

hey /fglt/ i have tried a lot of distributions in virtual box i want to get settled on debian but except manjaro no other distro let me change resolution if i install it on my actual pc will i be able to change it with xrandr and stuff?
whenever i try to add new mode in xrandr it just gives error unable to get size of gamma from output default it could be because of very low vram in virtual box (16 mb) and no proper drivers or something, if i install debian on my actual pc will that all still be a hassle? i dont mind if it is just virtual box only

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

1.

Create a file called hack.exe

2.

Put shit into it, the first line should be (to keep is easy):

#!/usr/bin/env bash

Then add something like:

echo hackerman

3.

Make it executable:

chmod +x hack.exe

adds the e(x)ecute bit to hack.exe, now you can run ./hack.exe and it should print a surprising message

according to this, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compose_key there does appear to be a SIMPLER way that doesn't involve remembering and typing a shitload of numbers.

>For instance typing Compose followed by ~ and then n will insert ñ.

But I don't know which of the keys on my keyboard is this mystical Compose key. This way of composing characters is sane like macos way of doing things since it's much easier to remember.

but... I can't figure out if any of my keys serves a function as a compose key....

>>61218134
Well what the hell kind of solution do you expect?
How is memorizing "0233" any different from memorizing "00e9" or even just "e9" >>61218146

If you don't have a keyboard for it then you're going to need to do some arbitrary shit to just type it at will. Alternatives include:
* Binding your own hotkeys to type it
* Installing an IME like "ibus" that can be activated to let you type special characters (this is how you type Japanese text, and you can even create your own custom user dictionary to easily do conversions like e→é on the fly.

1) To understand what's wrong with systemd first you must understand what was _right_ before systemd.
Basically we are talking about "init systems" here which are PID 1. The very first process run when your machine starts up. If it crashes your whole system is unstable.

So, how could such a vital component in an OS that has been around for decades be so easily replaced almost over night by something new?

You don't have to be an expert to realize how amazing that is. It's not because of anything systemd did. It's because of how flexible and modular GNU/Linux software is usually written to be. The fact that systemd exists in such popularity today is an incredible testimony to the beauty of what we call "the unix way". That our old init systems could just be so easily, quickly, and painlessly replaced, despite the fact that they are such vital components.

2) It throws "the unix way" into the garbage. 10yrs from now when we want to replaced it it will be an absolutely MASSIVE undertaking. Probably nobody will ever do it and we'll be stuck with systemd forever because we let its developers fuck us over and get rid of a philosophy that has served us well for so long.

3) It's basically developed by Redhat who actually receive military funding, and there's almost no doubt about it that they are major players in whatever NSA backdoors already exist in GNU/Linux and are always on the lookout for more.
By the way, systemd has already influenced the fucking _kernel_. These are the people who have our dicks in the palm of their hands because even a kernel developer said systemd was "too complex to understand" and we are going to be dependent on them for the rest of our lives. That's their endgame. They don't even care about people who use GNU/Linux in ways other than what they want. They develop everything for GNOME.
>>
>>61218907
Well then I guess I'll just make the script myself to do it.
>>

>>
4) Poettering is basically an SJW
>The Linux community is dominated by western, white, straight, males in their 30s and 40s these days," Poettering wrote. "I perfectly fit in that pattern, and the rubbish they pour over me is awful. I can only imagine that it is much worse for members of minorities, or people from different cultural backgrounds, in particular ones where losing face is a major issue.
>>
>>61218932
>le nsa backdoors

I don't care what it sounds like to underage memesters like you.

It's a reality. Laugh if you want, I don't give a fuck. You know there are circles online with much much more intelligent people then the likes of which you'd find on 4chan who would laugh at you for honestly not thinking GNU/Linux is already compromised by the NSA even now.
>>
>>61218967
What really grinds my gears is that pottering a hitler meme. I dislike systemd myself, but searching and finding a target called "poettering", who is acktschhually just some guy (well maybe some "open source" fag, but who cares, he's gpl'ing his shit so wtf), writing free software and calling him out for it is wrong. And he is right with "it's free software; don't like it, don't use it. The force is Red Hat hat, a different target.

>>
>>61219114
I never said it certainly had one. It's just a very real possibility.

Do you even realize how massive and important GNU/Linux really is in the world? It's used by just about every server, just about every super computer in the world.
Do you think people who actually have something to hide are running Windows 10? They're using unix based machines. There is FAR more information of interest to national security or even private corporations stored on Unix based machines than all the Windows machines in the world.

If you aren't even a little bit paranoid about it being compromised then you're kind of ignorant. Of course the NSA would have an extreme interest in being able to compromise GNU/Linux. Don't let it's lack of popularity on the desktop fool you.

I think the problem is that most people simply don't complain since "it just werks" with nonfree firmware, which results in even more nonfree firmwares becoming the de-facto standard.
>>
>>61219845
>implying complaining magically makes companies dropping free as in freedums drivers
nice fairy tale
>>
Stupid question here. If Linux is GPL, how does it come with onfree firmwares?
>>
>>61219845
I don't even get it to be honest.

Who is buying laptops based on the wifi? Nobody even looks at it, consumers just assume they're all about the same.
So what is there to protect by keeping their secrets proprietary?

>>61219862
You're an idiot and clearly have no idea how a free market works.
>>
>>61219894
The kernel developers have the copyright. They give the users of the kernel a licence for using the kernel. Only these users who got a licence from the kernel people must follow the license rules. The kernel people can basically do what they want and the linux foundation and some other companies made some silent rules that they don't sue each others.
>>
I love Manjaro i3 Community Edition. It's the only distribution I've seen that pre configures i3 into something resembling a desktop environment. While it's somewhat sacrilege, it saves me a lot of time. I can have a functional system on my laptop immediately and configure it as I go. there's just one problem I need to address and it's that its default text editor is Nano. I much prefer Vim. I've been Googling for a solution but nothing seemed to work so far. Naturally 4chan is the first place I ask.

>>61219894
in short, the GPL mandates that software made which components licensed under the GPL must also be licensed under GPL. non free firmware is added into an operating system made with GPL license components, not need out of them. therefore the firmware stays proprietary despite being within a free operating system.
>>
>>61219999
Why not open whatever text file directly from vim? I also installed manjaro i3 as my first distro i really loved it but now i got rid of it because of memes and rolling release ;_;b
Also can someone answer me to this

Please

I can be a slow and clumsy process for me sometimes. I'm also very accustomed to opening text files from Ranger with just the arrow keys. It's a force of habit I would rather bend the os around rather than relearn something.

besides, >implying anyone uses Nano
>>
>>61220075
Dont tell me you wouldn't enjoy using a free driver instead of a nonfree one which does (((whatever))) with ring -9000 privileges.
>>
>>61220138
nice dream constructs, but in reality people who have a job need to get shit done right now
>>
>>61220138
He probably wouldn't actually. Tech illiterates always seek to restrict the scope of things available.

The more stuff that's open for him to learn the dumber he feels. It's easier for them to just say thigns are closed and not have to deal with it than it is for them to actually educate themselves on what the hell they're talking about.
So by simply expecting open wifi you're insulting his intelligence. That's why they lash out.
I mean, honestly is there any other reason someone would actually _fight_ for shit to be closed and proprietary?
>>
>>61220171
>people who have a job
You mean those "serious" / "top 10 linux/unix networking commands" red hat enterprise (tm) jobs?

I'm just leaving this here; one of many adapers, check the web (not shilling) https://www.thinkpenguin.com/gnu-linux/penguin-wireless-n-usb-adapter-gnu-linux-tpe-n150usb
Get one once, enjoy deblobbed kernel forever.
>>
>>61220331
Would be better to make manufractors just stop fucking around and release free drivers tho.
>>
>>61220331
why is there a FSF premium on all this stuff?
end up buying just whatever werks instead. maybe if i get my spare thinkpad librebooted i'll bother with this

As said just check the web, there's the same thing for 75% the prive and lower. I guess techonic shit is cheap.

noob questions

afaik debian has a deblobbed kernel and when I install it, i can choose if I want to add a non-free wifi driver

wouldnt the same thing work for other free distros? lets say, getting the nonfree driver off debian and install it on trisquel for example?
>>
>>61220331
>44€
>FOURTY FOUR EUROS

Chrissake it's less than $10 on eBay. What the goddamn fuck is wrong with these libre hardware sellers?
>>
>>61220490
That's cheating, son. In order to make distros like Trisquel usable we don't have to hack proprietary software into it, but we need to try to make it work without. Thats the whole point of these distros. In your case, I'd recommend to just sticking to Debian.
>>
>>61220490
No.

Debian has a standard kernel, without firmwares. If you supply the fw files, it will load them.

Trisquel and other libre distros have deblobbed kernels. They don't have proprietary firmwares and don't have the ability to load them either (they ask for and load free firmwares thou).

Other distros have the normal kernel and usually install firmwares without asking as part of their basic package sets or their kernel package depends on the firmware package.
>>
>>61220556
Debian actually uses its own, deblobbed kernel ootb. It does not use the vanilla kernel.
>>
>>61220588
did you even read the whole post

>>61220490
basically yes, its like creating frankensteins kernel, but it works
>add ubotnet repo
>install wifi drivers
>remove ubotnet repo

or just dl the module and load it
welcome to the botnet

Well I'm back, I got xorg to work only under root, reinstalling does nothing. This is in arch BTW.

My problem appears when launching xorg.
Instead of launching it would show this.
Waiting for x server to begin accepting connections.
..
..
..
(Does that for a while)
..
..
Xinit:giving up
Xinit: unable to connect to x server:connection refused.
Waiting for x server to shut down.....
Xinit: X server is slow to shut down sending KILL signal
Waiting for server to die...
Xinit: x server refuses to die

Christ I had to phone post this.

We are close. In my opinion NixOS is the answer. Only thing it's missing is a non-systemd option.
If it had that it would over night become the hot new meme distro

I only installed Linux (Mint) on my laptop because Windows 10 literally killed it. The only thing I don't like about it is that Lollypop is the only half decent audio player for it.

No playlists? On Windows I used Wynil http://vinylsoft.com/ which has a fucking sweet smart playlist feature.
>>
>>61220783
Actually I think GuixSD is much better, but muh gaems.
Who knows what little differences in the linux libre kernel that would gimp my performance.
>>
>>61220876
What sort of smart features? mpv can do playlists
>>
>>61220876
>>61220903
Oh also, I haven't used it myself but a lot of people here swear by things like "ncmpc" which are music player daemons, and I guess the whole point is that they manage playlists and can be quickly started/stopped, and probably a bunch of other stuff.
Maybe something like that is what you want.
