So people on Assdrop are telling me this Topping A30 is a better amp than the Schiit Magni (not the Uber version though). Considering I don't care when either amp arrives, should I listen to them and buy this amp or should I just stick to the Schiit?

It certainly looks better than Schiit, plus it looks like it has more inputs and outputs too. I'd say go for it.

I hate to say it, but I think I'm leaning towards the Schiit just because of its looks. And I'm trying to power a T50RP, and the Topping A30 seems to be a little more powerful than the original Schiit.

Either one will power it just fine.
I'm honestly considering replacing my magni cause this topping one has two headphone outs, which is really useful IMO.

Are the DT 880s not recommended by /hpg/ anymore? I bought my pair years ago and never looked back. I've heard people say the HD 600s are better, but I'm an aesthetics and comfort nut and the DT 880 just beats the HD 600s out in that category hard from what I can tell and the sound quality was amazing when I tested it. I bought them awhile ago when /hpg/ always shilled them, why'd people change their minds?

Oppo HA-2 SE or Xduoo XD-05? I'm mainly looking for something portable that can decode DSD and other high res formats. I'm not currently powering anything heavy at all. All I'd be powering is a pair of RHA T20s and HD 598s. However, I'm in the market for a new set of full sizes, so that might change. Anyway, I'm mostly concerned about audio quality and format compatibility. I suppose battery life and other things that typically pertain to portable products are of concern, as well. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

>>
>>61198109

Open means they have mesh vents and will leak a bunch of sound, closed doesn't.

Open headphones sound more airy, and have the ability to make sound seem further away.
>>
>>61198109
"Shouldn't let out sound" would be a closed earphone anon. I warn you, open earphones are generally "better" as in they give you a more realistic sound. I would get a SHP9500 at that price range.

>>
>>61198310
Shit. No mids, and they really should have a detachable cable at that price.
>>
>>61198310
Probably the best V-Shaped, closed headphone under $200 USD. The Custom Studio is the DT770 80 Ohm with a detachable cable and adjustable bass ports so I wouldn't be surprised if that somewhat takes it's place.
>>61198319
What's a Custom Studio?
>>
>>61198333
>What's a Custom Studio?
Fixes detachable cable and nomids issues, but bass response is not ideal. First position doesn't have enough bass and the other three positions have a quite non-ideal 5-10 dB dip in the bass response. An improvement on the DT770, but the bass response for all four settings is a mess.

I have the shp9500 and they are pretty comfy, can't say anything about the new revision.

Thank you guys for helping me out.

A couple of last questions,
I'm leaning towards getting the
Philips SHP9500 . And also considering the Tackstar pro 82,
can you guys fill me in on how different these things are and whether they are better or worse than the others mentioned?
Which do you think is better for me when i just want head phones that i could just put on, relax without having to worry about the health of my ears or discomfort?

Tha takstar pro82 are closed, the shp9500 are open. Are you going to be using them in the office? at a library? while commuting?

Personally I find openback headphones less tiring to listen to over long periods of time.

I'm willing to consider,
Also would be nice to know more about the others mentioned.

Like an anon said, opened headphones give out more realistic sounds.
But i don't know the extent of what lets out,
and i'd like a bit of privacy, but i'm willing trade a bit if that means less strain on my ears.

I'm giong to be using them generally everywhere, office, at work and so on.
and considering getting ear buds if i start going to the gym.
I think my hearing has allready deteriorated to a point where small changes shouldn't be that different to me.

I'm still doing my research into things, so i'm just unsure of what to do.

Those are a decent budget choice for closed headphones. If you absolutely need closed headphones you should consider Status CB-1 too. Open headphones generally sound better than closed headphones in the same price range, though, so if isolation isn't necessary and sound leak isn't a problem, consider open.

I'd get earphones or IEMs for portability, open headphones leak, but only people right next to you would be able to identify what you're listening to. You would be able to hear stuff around you, I can listen to my keyboard while typing this.

>>
>>61205393
What about Beyer vs AKG?
>>
>>61205477
Beyer v Senn or AKG v Senn work best for shitposting wars because of contrasting "house sounds." Beyer and AKG house sounds both feature elevated treble whereas Sennheiser's house sound is neutral to muted treble. It's less likely that people will hold strong opinions about Beyer v AKG, so this comparison is not as effective for (You) bait.

I've done a lot of reading on a lot of different audio websites and communities, and one thing I've taken away from this extensive exploration of the audio world is that excessive treble/brightness is the number one most common turnoff for people serious about audio. The most common turnoff for average plebs will be "not enough bass," but this is just another way of saying "too bright."

It's a shame that there's so little known of chink audio equipment. Both Topping and audio-gd seem to be very good if you trust those measurements but without actual reviews it's always a risk and at head-fi i read that the chink stuff has QC issues, as always.
The NFB-11 is still discounted to $299 i think and the Topping stack or amp on Massdrop are really tempting but idk if i should pull the trigger. Chinkshit always so fucking random hit and miss.

>>61206290
Yes. Which one did you get? ISK or what it's called these days?
>>
>>61206364
Go to audio/recording devices and look for your sound card and use it as input. Most modern mobos don't support this feature anymore but there's an alternative.
With Audacity you can record from WASAPI to FLAC you just need to cut the audio yourself. Do note that if the source is lossy aka Spotify or YouTube there's no point in recording it to FLAC, it will still be lossy but waste so much more space.
You can still record to MP3 V0 or CBR320, audio quality is ok.
>>
>>61206290

It's Tidal Hifi and I can't find the album on any trackers so I'm going to grab it. So just set my sound card(dragonfly) to the input in audacity and have it record to flac?
>>
>>61206518
I won't disagree. There's a reason we recommend HD600 over HD800 here.
>>
>>61206537
If your soundcard is recognized you can use whatever recording tool you want, if that doesn't work Audacity with WASAPI input always does. This is how i recorded a lot of my MP3's.
Audacity will then record it to .aud (or whatever) which is the Audacity extension, you then have to export the selected tracks to FLAC. Remember to chose 16-bit and level 8 (highest quality) for export.
Anyways, how's Tidal? Idk about that HiFi streaming and the free Tidal player on the web where you can test it has godawful sound quality, sounds worse than 128kbps MP3.

>>
>>61207082
Can't find the link right now but I remember someone (Marv from Changstar/SBAF?) doing a study where he had lots of random people blind listen to a bunch of different headphones and he found that the two headphone "features" that most predictably led to low subjective ratings of headphones were large treble peaks and treble ringing. Also, as I've stated already in this thread, my extensive research into audio has led me to believe that the most common turnoff amongst those who take audio seriously is excessive treble response.
There's a reason that Harman's extensive research into subjective preferences led to a bass-boosted, treble-reduced target curve in relation to the sound of accurate speakers in a good room.

You clearly don't like the hd600. You're either having a bad night or you really can't stand thje 600 for some reason.

All beyers are comfy as fuck. DT1990 are somewhat more neutral than the normal DT series 990's and the pads contribute to that. Still typical beyer V-shape, but a good one.
Build quality is also exceptional and the detachable cable is nice.

The chinkshit Topping stack on massdrop might actually be good. It's being "praised" on head-fi and I can't imagine that Topping would be sponsoring head-fi so it might be legit. A couple people in the discussion/forums are comparing to the schiit stack in favour of the Topping, and again, I can't imagine that Topping can shill their products themselves considering their engrish and China internet.

I think I'll finally pull the trigger myself. I'm just trying to figure out if DSD is even a good thing before I join the drop. It's only $200 altogether anyways (probably cheaper off eBay if you're ok with that), much cheaper than a Schiit uber stack.

Any suggestions for open back headphones with solid clarity and an addictive listening experience (preferably oval earcups)

Just got the SHP9500 and am surprised by how much I love them - especially for the price. They are near my ideal set of cans. The sibilant highs died down with burn in but the low end leaves some thing to be desired. I do NOT want V shaped headphones but I do want a little bass boost and a slightly larger sound stage to use for gaming or relaxing to music. I was looking at the Fidelio X2 to serve that purpose but the QC issues and the not oval earcup are putting me off. Any recommendations? I was considering the HD 650 but heard that there are better cans for the price.

>>61209598
Listened to mine just like that for years, it's pretty good imho, my only gripes with it are that the coiled cable, while grate to use on a desk or on bus travels (no tangling in your backpack), makes walking rather cumbersome, also, the pads suck (but you can get Auray Sheep Skin pads which are actually better than the stock ones anyway, it's what i did). Otherwise they are great, built like tanks and very portable.
>>
>>61209583
>The sibilant highs died down with burn in
Dynamic driver burn-in is a myth. Changes in frequency response over the long-term are the result of physical earpad changes. What you experienced in the short-term is merely getting used to the sound. https://www.innerfidelity.com/content/measurement-and-audibility-headphone-break

>but I do want a little bass boost
Install Equalizer APO. Input the following:
Parametric filter => Peaking filter
Center frequency 20 Hz, gain 10 dB, Q factor 1
Preamp: gain -10 dB
This will flatten the sub-bass response so it's even with the mid-bass response. If you still need more bass after doing this, add a low shelf filter, 6 dB gain, center frequency 100 Hz, slope 12 dB/Oct. Change the preamp setting to -16 dB. This will boost your bass to Harman target levels. These filters will work exactly I have described because they're based on the attached accurate, credible objective measurement of your headphones.
>>
>>61209855
I should add that the purpose of the preamp settings is to prevent distortion from a clipped signal. Whenever you boost frequencies in an equalizer you must always compensate with a preamp setting to prevent clipping.
The SHP9500 already have large angled drivers with a lot of surface area and are open, so theoretically they should already have a significant soundstage, as angled drivers/pads and large drivers are the two features which generally create large soundstages.

That's a meme. A decent pair of headphones beats a headset any day. SHP9500/CB-1 with a Vmoda BoomPro would work.
>>
>>61209855
I'm perfectly comfortable using equalizers but I just wanted a more premium pair with a wider soundstage and also a boosted but neutral sounding bass. I've grown tired of using equalizers on my music - I've been doing it for years
>>
>>61209598
be warned, they are basically on-ear headphones, or at least some weird compromise between over-ear and on-ear.

They're better isolating than an open headphones, but you can do better in that aspect. Great for commuters (foldable yet durable unlike similarly-priced ATH headphones) to take with for use at the destination (library?), but not for the bus/train commute itself.

I had the 7506s before I moved up to K702s. There was only a tiny improvement in sound, but the difference in comfort was huge. They're nice headphones otherwise.

the article does state that there's still a small difference overtime so if the sibilant highs were brought down enough with burn in to not be sibilant to him anymore, it had a large subjective impact. Even Tyll stated sometimes we need to listen to and trust our ears and not the equipment.
>>
>>61210006
Every pair of headphones in the world can benefit from equalization. Equalization should be a tool you use for life.
>>
>>61210049
The difference in sound was caused by physical changes to the earpads over time. My point was that the drivers themselves are not the cause of the effects people attribute to "burn-in."
>>
>>61208929

no doubt I was in a crazed honeymoon phase when I first got my K702, but now that I treat my K702s almost like beater headphones, I don't have that bias anymore and the difference is more in the comfort and perceived soundstage than actual sound quality/fidelity between the two headphones.

it doesn't help that open headphones have to be in a perfect environment that is not always possible even at home (computer fans, a/c vent or other fans because summer). Once I get the HD6XX to compare with, I'll probably just get some nice closed headphones afterwards then move on to speakers.

how do you tell if a chink-fi product is skimping on parts? I'm no electrical engineer

You get what you pay for but $100 is a fortune in China so the affordable price should not be an indication for them to (heavily) skimp on parts.

Dunno if i should just play it safe and get something like a FiiO K5. Schiit reeks too much like snake oil to me even if people only recommend their "entry-level" products, never mind the whole Asgard fiasco a while back.

prices changed a lot.

The holy trinity used to be the HD600, K702, and DT880. People were split between the three. Then the HD600 dropped down in price hard, and it wasn't a contest anymore. Its build quality (the snapping and the horrid kitchen counter top) was more fitting of its price unlike before when it was almost $500.
