Fuck that rubberdome shit but yes the Noppoo choc mini is one of the best keyboards ever. It is a complete shame that the spacebars are so hard to get but so far I have a blue, white, and black one.

Unicomp classic or ultra classic?

Is there any diference beside that extra plastic part that they cut off?

Try get the beige ultra classic (it's sold out right now) those cases are usually in the best condition and they are built fairly well.

If I don't like DSA would I like Cherry? I don't like DSA because of the uniform height and low profile. Cherry looks barely taller than DSA but the sculpt looks ok. I'm used to sculpted SA and OEM.

i'm a huge fan of the layout despite the low spacebar availability, because the other bottom row keys are all standard size, so right ctrl is comfy to press with your pinky, and right alt is super easy and fast to reach with your right thumb, and fn is also reasonably accessible and wide enough to press by swinging your thumb into your hand. protip: swap left ctrl with win key for comfy use with your left pinky
>>
>>61164461
The only thing that stops me for buying a Noppoo is their ugly keycaps and the fact that the base isn't aluminum.
I'm between the Noppoo, a Poker II or a Pok3r, going strong towards the last.
Why I should get a Noppoo?
>>
>>61164896

Got a beamspring terminal and some other old IBM mainframe equipment for less than twenty bucks today. Going to have to burn about a hundred bucks in gas to go pick it up Monday, but I'm still happy as hell. So glad I was able to grab one of these for a reasonable price when they've gone to insane levels on ebay and such the last year. Especially this sexy beast compared to the 5251.

Will post more about it after the 4th once I wake up from my BBQ coma.

It's only $60 right now, I'm actually ordering one in black tomorrow i think.
I use the Noppoo because I believe it's objectively the best layout. it lets me keep my f1-f12 keys while also having them extremely easy to reach. This is completely ideal for games with a ton of keybinds, I cannot play my primary game on other keyboards.
Hit two buttons on the keyboard and control and capslock swap. This enhances the previous point because now you can access the control+ layer for double the keybinds very easy. It's way easier to hit capslock+d vs ctrl+d.
Now that ctrl is capsllock you can bind it to your push to talk and you can toggle push to talk with out actually moving your fingers at all because your palm willl be hovering over the bottom left control anyway so simply lower your palm and your mic goes live.
POM keycaps are incredible. They feel so good under your fingers with the light clicky blue switches.
The media keys are actually sweet, I use them to control my music constantly.
I don't see how it's even a debate, the pok3r is just a maggic force with out the pg up/down cluster and the magicforce can be had for like $40 if you want that layout.
Pic related. Black switches on the maggicforce, blues on the noppoo. I switch back and fourth all the time.
>>61165058

Question: Can you make it work with a modern PC?
Does it have a buzzer?
>>
>>61165105
Thanks. Will reconsider the Noppoo.
I wonder if will it be difficult to get spherical keycaps for it.
>>
>>61164889
No one likes DSA, they just take pictures of it.

Usually, everyone's favorite profile is Cherry. It's what OEM should've been, it's great.
>>
>>61165128
I can make it work with a modern PC. And it comes with a click solenoid instead of a buzzer, which I should also be able to get running again with a little effort. Here's a review of the same model. This guy's channel is pretty great if you like old keyboards.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNRH1ULmbNA
>>
>>61165161
I like DSA, not so much for the profile itself, but because you can use it on odd layouts that have keys in funny places. So as a guy that likes 75%, it and SA are the profiles of choice.
>>
>>61165154
I would imagine it is extremely difficult. Your options are extremely limited. One other anon and I know of all of the sets that you can use with it. Your best bet is to buy the black or white choc mini and then buy one of the keysets in the opposite color, so you have a black and white spacebar for it. This allows you to use any primarily black or white set which opens up your options a bunch.
It seems like the drevo gramr is extremely fucking similar with a standard spacebar. The only thing strange on that board is the smaller right alt, ctrl, fn, etc but those are pretty common .
>>
>>61165154
>I wonder if will it be difficult to get spherical keycaps for it.

Carbon SA fits if that is still going on.

I almost bought it. I really like the height and the sharp angles and I don't mind ABS. I cancelled my order because I'd rather put that $30 towards some EnjoyPBT dyesubs since I've been wanting those much longer than these cubic. Also the thickness of EPBT stretches TaiHao ABS till they split.

Are there any good options for quiet keyboards? I know they won't be silent, but right now even my rubber dome keyboard is clacky. Every "silent" mechanical keyboard sounds like gamer gear stuff, and I don't want to pay more money for rainbow lights. I had been looking at the Matias one for a while, but the local store doesn't have the new ones in yet.
>>
>>61166523
What do you mean by "new ones?" There's a new version aside from the the Quiet Pro 4?
>>
>>61166553
They don't have a single number on their website, but the stopped making whatever version earlier this year because they were working on the version that was released sometime in May. My store has only had the Mac version listed on their site, and doesn't have any of the Quiet Pros actually in stock anywhere.
>>
Should I buy this:
https://www.massdrop.com/buy/magicforce-82-key-mechanical-keyboard
It sports a gateron brown/blues or should I buy a cheaper keyboard with oetemu switches. This is my first mechanical keyboard and I'm hoping for something worth investing it for the long run.

Amazon has the James Donkey 619 for $60 if you want Gateron Browns. Don't bother with other Chinese switches unless your budget is really tight.

>>
>>61168032
Gat's clicky switches aren't great. Their looser tolerances aren't detrimental with linears/tactiles but it fucks them over with the click jackets on blues/greens.
>>
>>61168032
Magicforce is fine as a board, though I hate the stock caps as my fat Burgerland fingers aren't accustomed to the slightly smaller size. You may want to spring for some PBT caps.

I have a Leopold FC900 with Brown Cherry MX. This was the first keyboard I got, so I didn't really know much about switches. It works fine, but after having tried Blue switches, it feels much worse, even though those switches were Kailh. I really like the design of the keyboard, and there is one version with Blue switches too. Should I get one of those, or should I solder Gateron switches on the one I have?

Man I wish Signature Plastics could get their shit together already. Was debating on grabbing some Granite High Contrast for a build I was thinking about but took too long to decide and now the base sets are all sold out.

It's so frustrating. One either has to plan months or years in advance and pray that they'll still actually want the keycap set that far in the future or just roll with whatever becomes available and snap it up in the first 5 seconds or you won't get shit.

so 407 yuan for the keyboard shipped to the agent, 180 yuan for standard shipping from the agent (maybe a bit less without the wrist rest?), unclear if there were additional fees, 407+180 yuan comes out to around $88 after currency conversion fees, and i think kbdfans includes fedex/dhl shipping
>more expensive goods, we will use FEDEX or DHL, relatively low prices of free shipping items we will use epacket, or China Post
so 407+272 yuan = ~$102 after currency conversion

so you save maybe around $10 if you're willing to deal with the taobao agent and wait longer for the agent to buy it in china and then ship it to you
>>
>>61177150
The wait's only bad if they use epacket/post. If they send it through DHL it's only like 2 days to burgerland. Not sure about Fedex but it's probably about the same.
>>
>>61177150
if kbdfans include DHL shipping for tada68 you may as well buy it from them, because 407+272 yuan isn't cheaper

Oh well, will swap it out for one with blues. It's weird that WASD rarely gets talked about on here. The keyboard was pretty expensive for what you get, but the build quality is on a completely different level from what I've used before, and the aesthetic is very nice.

good luck finding a 3.25u spacebar without chopping up a bigger one like pic related. your pic looks like it has a 3u spacebar in place of the right 3.25u spacebar so if the connectors are the same you could just get two 3u spacebars which you can find in some keysets for example DSA carbon and SA carbon

Sorry for the noob question. Why are the keys so close together on this board compared to normal boards? Are the keycaps bigger, or is the spacing different?
>>
>>61181009

Those are the tops caps in >>61179761 they're shorter so they look fatter.
>>
Is there any difference between the Model F 122 and the Model M?
I personally like the F122 aesthetically
>>
>>61181422
Model F is capacitive whereas Model M is buckling springs over membrane. This give the Model F a longer lifespan and NKRO as well.
>>
>>61181422
Big flipper on PCB vs smaller flipper on membrane. So the F will feel more tactile just because it's a bigger thing hitting a more solid surface.

Also, there's 122 M's. I even have a unicomp USB one kicking around here somewhere.

>>61179723
>What exactly are "OEM Profile"? I've heard it thrown around but never seen a pic like >>61179114 that describes what it looks like
OEM = Filco. Costar (Taiwanese company that makes tons of keyboards for various brands including Filco) basically came up with it to compete with Cherry. It's nearly identical except for the the height difference. It was not copyrighted so it spread among various asian manufacturers.
>>
>>61181782
correct. keycap profile has nothing to do with plastic type. it's just that 99% OEM keycaps are shitty ABS.
>>
>>61181844

It's just so strange to call ALL OEM profiles "OEM" because shouldn't they differ from each manufacturer?
>>
>>61181863
well, they're almost all the same profile. just the colors, legends/fonts and features (transparent window, translucency etc) are different. but they are all of the same profile.

there's less than 8 companies that actually manufacture keycaps. everyone buys from them. so they're OEM in more ways than one.

All you need to do is solder in the LEDs, but don't buy 3mm LEDs, they can bump against the switch and fuck up your typing, especially if you use Cherry or DSA keycaps.

Get 2x3x4mm LEDs, they fit perfectly and have zero interference with the keycap. Also I've found that their light coverage is just a little brighter than normal LEDs.

Here's a random link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2x3x4mm-Water-Clear-Diffused-8-Colours-Rectangle-Square-LED-Diodes/272632454536?

I used to be like you, buying cheap keycaps and thinking it was enough. It's a niche of a niche and hardly any of this stuff is made any more. If you hate the price so much, go out and make your keycaps with your own machining, plenty of people are trying to do just that.

It's a shame they aren't DSA
>>
>>61189588
You'll have to be like every other faggot on Geekhack and post your own renders in an interest check until you get enough people interested to contact a manufacturer like GMK or SP to get your caps made. Then you'll have to wait a year if you're stupid enough to use SP, just to get your keycaps.

If you want good quality, you're kinda stuck with whatever's being made at the moment. What's the colorway? Something similar might have already been made.

He's right though. You're all getting fucking robbed by these cheap Chinese cunts that can shit out an entire keyboard worth of caps for like $0.20. This is a clear case of hipster hype inflating the cost of something. Welcome to San Fran-keyboard.

That looks a lot like Penumbra, one of the most sought after colorways, with prices going up to $250-$300 in both SA and Cherry profile.

Something that is kinda similar is SA Mechanist.

But you'll have to wait months before the actual groupbuy, then longer to get the actual caps, and that's after spending hundreds of dollars.

Welcome to Autism, looks like you're/we're fucked.
>>
Why do so many cap sets have the goofy looking symbols on them? There's a bunch of sets I'd buy if it didn't have those. At the very least, why not redesign the symbols to be more proportional to and fitting with the labels?

The cheapest option is to buy the blanks and try them out for yourself. It's better than buying a full Granite set for hundreds of dollars only to find out you don't like DSA.

I would advise you to stick to Cherry profile since it's mostly loved by everyone and usually seen as the best profile, but there are some people out there that actually use and love DSA, instead of the Redditors that only buy DSA to take pictures of their keyboards with.
>>
>>61189751
look at how much a lego toy costs, and those are mostly ABS plastic, $40 including shipping for a full set of thick PBT in cherry profile is fair, and the enjoypbt dye sub isn't just your ordinary print which wears off, and if you have a standard layout keyboard there is a $52 dye sub alternative which uses the same plastic (but the dye sub is not by enjoypbt)

A fucking rubberdome is good for shooters. The only switch that's good for a genre of games is Blacks and RTS, and only because it's so heavy that accidental key presses don't happen as often.

I recommend Blues, but if you're still on the gaming keyboard meme, then get a Ducky with Cherry MX Silvers. It's the fastest switch Cherry offers, though you'll probably hate typing on it.

A friend of mine just got it, I tried it out at his place. Razer switches aren't particularly horrible for gaming pecking - it's not like you're going to be typing on the thing anyway. The ergonomics are actually pretty great, it's quite comfortable.

The 8-pov hat instead of a true joystick is stupid though. The twice as cheap, membrane logitech equivalent has a normal joystick, but for some reason razer cheaped out on that.

From a pure weight standpoint honeywell hall effect micro switches came with a 300g variant. From a loudness perspective a beep speak terminal keyboard or a beam spring with the solenoid turned on are the loudest. However these aren't switch mechanism, rather external noises. If you're talking about a pure heavy and loud switch then omron amblers would be the switch to get as they are heavier then a beam spring, and only slightly quieter
>>
>>61193584
>loudest click
I don't think you can do better that capacitive buckling spring
>hardest
Unmodded, you'll probably want cherry mx super blacks, at 150+ grams. (Bear in mind that they have been out of production for 5 years, and were only ever used in a few keyboards, and then only for a couple of keys in those keyboards, so finding enough of them for a full set might not exactly be an easy task.)

If you count modded, you can literally stick any spring you want into a random cherry switch. You could even place a cylinder from solid osmium carbide or something in the switch as a "spring".

You have to buy custom keycaps in the $100 range, or just use blanks (though it can still be kinda hard).

The new Nautilus keycap set coming out tomorrow has all the keys you need in the bass kit for $100-ish.

Here's your cheapest option for $40: https://kbdfans.myshopify.com/collections/keycaps/products/enjoypbt-blank-keycaps-117keys?variant=36740706829

It's not that easy, you just have to keep an eye out for the correct keys, and make sure they're in the right profile layer. Like you could use 1u keys from row 1 like "esc" to use for the bottom row, but it'll feel all sorts of wrong.

Make sure the size and row profile are the same. If you want legends, you're stuck with getting $100 key sets that rarely have groupbuys and usually only come once in a lifetime.

What's good about them? Besides being a shitty version of Cherry MX Browns (which are pretty shitty already), the shorter actuation that supposedly appeals to gamerfags is beaten by the Cherry MX Silver.

>>61195968
Having two separate leaf contacts leads to all sorts of key chatter issues which is ironic considering it's a "gamer" switch. And of course the biggest issue is that it doesn't have Cherry stems, so there's absolutely no way to swap out from the incredibly bad cheap ABS keycaps that Logitech gives you.

It's a poorly made switch specifically designed around putting an LED in the middle of it to get the ultimate G4M3R SHINE-THROUGH. There's a hundred better keyboards for lower prices, and honestly, a Razer keyboard with their crappy switches are better than Romer-G.

Logitech just hopes you're dumb enough to buy their keyboards because you want to get something to match your well-made Logitech mouse.

Buy a switch tester, I found that I actually enjoy tactile switches like Cherry Clears and MOD-Ms over everything else. It's smarter to waste $10-$20 on a tester instead of $100 on a keyboard you don't like.

That being said, a lot of people don't like Cherry Blues for gaming because you can't double tap properly because of the actuation, and a lot of people don't like the Cherry Reds for typing because their lack of resistance leads to accidentally hitting keys.

Ducky is a good brand, but if you're going for Ducky, you should really be on the look for something with PBT keycaps too; makes a big difference.

Something like this (I know you're UK, so good luck): https://mechanicalkeyboards.com/shop/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1557

Blackwidow w/ Cherry MX Blues & o-rings
The W and S keys occasionally do not register.

On Amazon, I've been looking at the Velocifire VM70 (MX Blue) for $66, Rosewill RK-9000V2 or RK-9300(backlit) for $80, Tomoko 104 for $50, Plugable 104 for $50, and the Quickfire TK for $110. I'm also considering Ducky keyboards such as the One and Zero Shine for $110 and $100 respectively.

What would you guys pick from this list? Is there something better that I haven't looked at? Can I live without the numpad if I frequently use it for stuff like long passwords and credit cards?
>>
>>61197362
Of the ones you've listed, Ducky One, since they come stock with PBT keycaps that won't develop a greasy shine after a month.

>Can I live without the numpad if I frequently use it for stuff like long passwords and credit cards?
Unless you do a lot of calculations on Excel, the lack of a 10-key won't be too noticeable. Typing in credit card numbers might get annoying, but honestly you shouldn't be doing that too often.
>>
>>61197362
If you like your numpad, you're only gonna miss it when you go 60%.

If you haven't bought a switch tester, you might as well, unless you just want a clicky switch, in which case the Cherry Blue is usually the best you're gonna get (unless you really wanna go heavy).

All the chink boards you can ignore, like the Plugable (disgusting Reddit trash) and Tomoko. Velocifire and Rosewill look decent, but the Velocifire doesn't have a steel plate, and I forget if the Rosewill has a plate.

Ducky is a great choice, just make sure they come with PBT caps so you don't have to buy new caps.

I you want other brands, look at Varmilo, Filco, and Leopold.
>>
>>61197431
Thanks for the advice mates, the extra space has been pretty attractive to me. I also used to use my numpad for extra keybindings in games like gmod, but I guess that's not too important anymore. I need to practice touch typing with regular numbers anyways.

I think I'll go with the Ducky One TKL w/ PBT. I'm eyeing one with side printing. It looks sexy as hell and has some Chinese radicals(?) as well, which might be relevant since I'll probably study Chinese when I go into uni.
