In what regards? I should make another eBay laptop buying guide video... That old one is bad. xD

Should I do a beginner's guide on eBay selling, like packaging and slinging laptops?
i am also thinking of the setup we have at my work. but the lighting at the warehouse is shit... and its cluttered at the moment.

>>61112995
I think all my floppy drives are bad on the T-Series ThinkPads I have. Maybe one drive works.
Need to get a zip drive.

Huh? Is this a thing? I mean my CD drive on my T30 seems to be dead from what I have diagnostic it. Couldn't get any file from it and the whole machine couldn't read any cds.
Well damn, I might as well just get ultrabay batter that is compatible with ultrabay slim or hdd caddy.

No. I think all of mine are bad. Just bad luck on my part, I don't necessarily store them well too. I think.
I got a lot of bad CD/DVD drives too... (x

like critiquing other listings? Nice mode like how Kyle and Paul talk about other's people pc builds?
I could do one about my favorite sellers that I buy parts/laptops from.
Oh yes and laptop buying. It might take me months, but I'll wait to get a laptop that I'll flip for almost twice it's price.

Budget:
<600€ (more if it will be worth it)
Location:
Lithuania, Eastern Europe so no eBay and other large auction (?) Sites
Size:
Don't care I just don't want keyboard like in pic related (it looks too big and imo it's kinda ugly no offence tho)
Stuff I'll do on it:
Web, shit to mid tier programming
(maybe indie games like tboi and darkest dungeon)
Other requirements:
Durable
6+ h battery life
Good screen

I need it to be upgradable so it would be usable like next 4-7 years

And I found used think pad t520 for 300eur it looks like new from photos I have seen so maybe I should just take it or I could get something even better for more?

i've been using an x230 tablet for about 6 months now after switching from an x220 (non-tablet). its alright, but its not worth paying extra for in my opinion since the only bonus that the tablet models have are IPS screens and you can just mod a new IPS panel into any other thinkpad anyway. the pen is really good if you use it with oneNote (i use this laptop for university and math note-taking is really easy thanks to it) but thats really it

These are the ultimate school laptops IMO, Tablet mode works great for taking notes. When I was at uni all I would carry is my x220t, charger, and a small folder for loose paper. Would steal the monitors, keyboards, and mouse from computer lab computers for a workstation setup.

I can't imagine a more practical device, however now that I've graduated I'm thinking of upgrading to a x230 and do the keyboard mod, since tablet is sortof useless for non-pen activities

I want a laptop with a 1080p screen and a decent processor that won't give me shit if I install Linux on it at about $170 or less. Suggestions?
>>
So I just got my w520.
I install ubuntu through usb just to get it going.
Don't like ubuntu after 5 minutes of running, try to install arch through usb to see what the "next step" is before I go into gentoo.
All hell breaks loose.
Usb boot doesn't work.
Try to just run ubuntu again, doesn't work.
Just shows type mark thing flashing.
Try multiple things, different usb's different distros to boot from usb, write off usb boot not working, just flashes black and comes back to bios screen.
Take out ssd, its a samsung 125gig
Erase it all.... idk if this was a good idea or not....
put it back in, re-try the usb boots, nothing works.
Stuck in bios screen.
Burning Arch on a dvd right now as we speak.
In b4 it doesn't work too.
(Kinda want windows 7 but its my first day running linux so i'm not going to give up)
Help please and thanks
>>
>>61116356

>>
>>61116872

>>
>>61116907
right now I don't like that it wont run on my w520 after I installed it. Like why you no keep loading you ugly looking OS you.
I didn't like it cause it was ugly.
Arch and Gentoo are more intricate which makes them more beautiful.

But nvm, I doubted boot from dvd. Thank you internet gawdz for boot from dvd.
>>
>>61116959
>Arch and Gentoo are more intricate which makes them more beautiful.
You're retarded. Ubuntu can look exactly the same as arch and gentoo.
>>
>>61116872
You probably want either Mint or Kubuntu since you seem like a complete beginner.

If you like, type
sudo apt install kde
into your Ubuntu before wiping it it to try out KDE, not my preference but it's easy to set up and newbies tend to like it.
>>
>>61116970
Not gonna lie, Still learning the differences of application between ubuntu, arch and gentoo.
All I know is Gentoo is the way to have full control over the linux platform. Arch is like diet version of gentoo and ubuntu is used by air force and I have no clue what it can do.
But Im simply trying to use this laptop to do all my coding and learning on.
<3 you 2 anon.

>>61116978
idk anon I kind of want to learn
>>
>>61117067
Well stick with ubuntu, debian, or fedora especially if you are new. Dont listen to anyone telling you to install gentoo or arch. Just because its harder to install doesnt mean anything. You're better off actually using your os than spending all your time installing it. I recommend trying ubuntu mate.
>>
>>61117067

A Thinkpad will tend to be a well built enterprise laptop designed for survivability and repairability. They're fairly cheap and plentiful too, in hardware configurations that are still useful today.
I just nabbed a 2011 model from a seller today and on the merits of the keyboard I'm typing with right now alone, I think it's my favorite ever laptop. Feels like I could throw it at a tank and the tank would be worse off, too. It's just pure quality.

**40 was about the lowest of the low
The trackpoint didn't have buttons on the **40, and the X1C had an absolute abomination of a keyboard

It's slowly getting better. Keyboards are still chiclet, but from what I've seen on /r/Thinkpad, they're not bad keyboards and some people prefer them to the old keyboards.
>>
>>61120437
Good to know that by the time I've worn this T420 out there might actually be a half-decent replacement.
How about the actual build quality? I've heard some serious complaints that things have been going downhill in both durability and quality control. Kind of concerning considering they're both things you kind of expect with the Thinkpad name.
>>
Do you guys own more than one thinkpad?

I'm thinking of getting another one, because lugging around a T420 all day kinda sucks. I'll use the T420 at home, and have my portable be the X220.

Is an X220 a good choice? Can you mod the screen to IPS?
>>
>>61120454
Again, from what I've seen on /r/Thinkpad, QC doesn't seem to be a strong point of Lenovo, but it's still rare to get problems.
Plus, the returns process doesn't seem to be too painful so if you do buy a brand new one, you aren't spending weeks trying to contact Lenovo and get a replacement.

Saying that, they're very well built
>>
>>61120437
I have used both keyboards and the new one is not as bad as some claim.
The keys are better than any other laptop brand and on par with the old ones.
There is more spacing around the keys which means hitting the wrong key is very rare, but cleaning the keyboard is a bit harder.

What is bad about the new keyboard is the layout.
The printscreen has replaced the menu key which is enfuriating, the pg up/dwn is moved down to the arrow keys which is actually pretty good, but the worst for me was the f-keys placement.
Before they were seperated into groups of 4 which means you could easily press the right one, but now this is a lot harder.
>>

>>61118624
Raibown six siege is playable even on t420 with intel hd 3000 (Using a dual-channel memory, for gods sake.)

You can't expect Witcher 3 without a dedicated GPU, and even so, it would have to be relatively new, this games sucks for optimization. (Meanwhile, you can play MGS:V looking equally good or better on those intel suck-ass igpus.)
>>
>>61117946

>>
>>61120458
fantastic portable laptops, x220 had an IPS option, but they are hard to find. probably easier to just replace the screen. you can get the x220tablet which always comes with an IPS screen, but at the cost of a bit larger and less battery space due to the tablet conversion setup
>>
>>61121172

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd024298

specifically this one I think
ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 with USB 3.0 – 90W: (433815U - U.S.)

I don't think the X230/T430 can use the 170W docks, I think those only work on the W-series. So avoid that.

But the docks usually go for less than $20 on Ebay
>>
Budget: ~500e
Location: Finland
Size: Nothing too big, gonna carry it around a lot.
Performance: Enough for programming and taking notes in class without having to wait too long for things to load. Maybe some low tier indie games.
Other requirements: Durable with a good keyboard. Need a good battery life (8h and up preferably).

Really, why would they work?
>>
>>61128940
I meant why wouldn't they work?
>>
>>61128940
>>61128955
The 170W adapter uses a different power plug that's only on the W series.
>>
>>61128955
The 135W and 170W power adapters have a notch in them and can't be used on things other than the W-series. You also can't use smaller power adapters on the W-series because of the notch in the power port.

The dock's power port should work the same way. But if the dock comes with the power adapter then it might not be a problem. But I don't know. Maybe it would work just fine. Google it.

Well then I guess that can wait for a while. I'm getting really good times with the e728 battery and I suspect that laptop is even less battery friendly than the X220.

Thank you, my friend. Also, how did you calculate the Wh? Is it like

mAh = the amount of charge
V = the speed of discharge
and you divide those to get the battery time?

The 9-cell is about 10$ more, but I'll be cool for a while with this one.

ALSO, any way to charge the battery without the laptop? If this exists, I'm buying 3 batteries and charging them so I can swap. That would be fucking fantastic. With boot times being 30s or so, I can be down, swap, up and running within 2 minutes!

>>
>>61130040
divide how many watts you're using by how many watt-hours your battery has

X220 and similar models at idle or light usage will use about 3-15W, so it comes out almost at exactly 10:1 Wh ratio, every 10Wh the battery has = about 1 hour

conveniently that also means about 1 hour per battery cell, so 6-cell = 6 hours, 9-cell = 9 hours

these are rough ballpark estimates, it greatly depends on what you're doing and the condition of the battery, etc.
>>
>>61130135
Vice versa
>>
>>61130096
Not that anon, but try having a look into your repos in the OS you're using. I found some solution in Debian that only underclocks, but it helps a lot.

>>61130135

Thank you!
>>
>>61130180
I'll look into that, I just disable turbo boost and I'll do some test to see if at least helps a little althought I really was hoping to undervolt but it seems impossible on the software side at least. I guess underclock it's my only hope

Sandy Bridge doesn't have/support for Fully Integrated Voltage Regulator (FIVR), thats why you can't undervolt
>>
>>61130321
I have underclocked with almost no impact to performance on my e728, but I'm not too worried about it spinning up. You might be, in which case I don't know.

It works really well, and if not, it's a great piece of placebo. I set up a large nagbar that gives me options "Set CPU governor" and I have "userspace" "performance" and "powersave" set up. Userspace keeps 1 core at 2.4 and puts the other at dynamic levels, performance ramps both up and powersave takes both down to 1.2 (I think). Might be more or less, but the boost in performance is there.

Pretty much the only laptop that I've seen actually helps temps more than 1 or 2 c is the unibody macbooks.
And thats just because they have no bottom ventalation
Also remember that if you drill the bottom you NEED to add a filter.
Otherwise you will get a shit load of dirt on the fan, and might kick up something bigger that could damage the fan/heatsink.
Plus you need to make sure that when you're handling the laptop you dont break what you cut out/get your fingers into the fan area.

I love my t61p but linux is pissing me off

I put zorin on it a while back, but I have honestly no clue what I'm doing with linux, and can't really find a good resource to start. The majority of the communities that I've encountered have been more of those elitist douchebags that like would rather make fun of you than help someone understand the commands, or why they truly think it's better without just calling you a fag. Not sure who they think they're impressing.

I went to install Mutt because someone on a forum said it was an excellent email program, and could not find almost any resource as to how to actually install the program, it's not like just downloading an exe file and running. Where do I move the files, what do i click on or type to open it even? The one single site I found after 10 minutes of looking around gave me exact commands to type to download and install via CLI and they didn't work. I had no clue what the commands meant or for sure what some of them did... (get apt with a website is easy to figure out of course) I'm copy pasting these character for character every other tutorial just said 'install it'... HOW??? I HAVE THE FILES RIGHT HERE, THE READ ME TELLS ME NOTHING, WHAT DO I DO AFTER DOWNLOADING??!?!?!?

In real life, the only linux users that I've encountered so far have been terrible, (i know this isn't every user) convincing everyone they talk to that he needs to let him install ubuntu, or mint, or debian (he picks the individual distro for each person?), deletes their windows, installs it and they don't have a fucking clue what they're doing. They can't run their quicken, or their greeting card software, or their big fish games... then they come to me, and I have to redo their windows install, tell them that I can't reinstall games that they lost the cd for years ago, and then I get bitched out because "you said you could bring it back to like it was).

What would be my CPU upgrade options on this one?

ark.intel says the T1300 has the same socket as dual core yonahs and meroms, but is there anything more to it?

Would the 65W LA65NS0-00 work with a no-dGPU E6410?
The E6410 came with a 90W DA90PE1-00, I guess all E6410 had this as the stock charger, but does one with integrated graphics actually need the 90W?

If it has the same connector and voltage, yes. Maybe dosable any kind of fast charging mode just in case

Is there a weird smell to it? It may be emitting something from within. My T60 I got off eBay's thermal paste smelled like a barn and you could smell it if you were sitting right next to me while I was doing something CPU-intensive.

I have a thinkpad with a busted screen.

Can I remove the whole screen and just use the body of the computer and plug on a tv?

The T420 is more portable without going into much in the way of ultraportable sacrifices. Which means it works better as a portable to complement a desktop than a T520.

HP have been and pretty much always will be trash, if I were going to defect from Lenovo it would be to Dell. They at least know how to design.

Pic related is a 14" 1440p quad core with thunderbolt 3 and can have dedicated graphics, all with no cooling problems and while 22mm (the same average height as an X230) thick.

The HP and lenovo Equivalents are bigger, thicker, hotter and uglier, with the HP having a gimped trackpoint.

I don't care about their marketing bullshit. I've seen Kodak cheapo point and shoot film cameras with a sticker inside saying "Use Kodak films only" - this is much the same thing.
Yes, chink chargers can make a housefire. But this is a genuine Dell charger with the right plug and right voltage, and seeeemingly enough power for an iGPU laptop, since afaik all Arrandale iGPU Thinkpads came with 65W chargers, didn't they, but obviously Dell for whatever reason chose to ship all Arrandale, Sandy and Ivy E6*** with 90W ones.
Btw what charger does your cute E4300 have, 90W as well?
>>
typing this on a t440s, battery life is good and keyboard is the best I've ever used, only complaint is that the screen isn't that bright (hard to use in heavy sunlight)

I also got an x60 for like $20 recently, but it's locked to its docking station thing and I don't have the key, so I can't replace the battery or hdd, which are fucked
>>
what's better Lenovo Thinkpad, HP elitebook, or Dell latitude?
>>
>>61139123
depends what generations you're into, what latitude and thinkpad models you're talking about (because latitude and thinkpad ranges have their low ends too), and what's cheaper where you are (dells and hps can be cheaper than comparable thinkpads, but not always), ah and how much do you need a proper clit (elitebooks ending with p have no middle clit button)

Well let me put it this way: in the same week, I got a laptop I payed $2000 for, a $190, six year old Thinkpad and returned a busted Surface Pro 4 with its typecover. The old, used Thinkpad is easily my favorite of the three and probably my favorite laptop ever.

Also, /tpg/, thank you for giving advice when I needed it and setting me on the right path.

I have x230, bought it last year. I think you should go for x250. At times the x230 feels a bit lackluster, gets extremely hot (87 celsius on youtube/twitch with nothing else running), have recently cleaned. Other google searches said they had similar problem even after applying new thermal paste.

The x220 came out in 2011 if memory serves me right, while its a great laptop, i think you could do with a newer model.

I know ill likely get flame, but the circlejerk does get slightly too strong at times

The resolution can be kind of annoying when coding, and wanting to splitscreen with browser
>>
>>61139361
most of us use our thinkpads for school, browsing, and coding. For those needs *20/30 series are enough and with the nicer features and better price points its a no brainer. Can't think of anything that I do on my x220 that would be much better on an x250
>>
>>61139214
probably, but I don't know enough about the locking/attachment mechanism to know whether or how badly that would damage the computer

>>

>>
>>61139511
I don't know all that much either, but my wild guess is that you could even tear the dock in pieces not damaging the thinkpad at all. It's just some plastic hooks that rise out of the dock and go into the body.
Please report on your lockpicking success. I also have a dock (different one though) lying around locked with no keys, luckily not locked onto a thinkpad. Kinda lazy to tinker with it, but some shared inspiring experience could help.

>>
>>61135114
Resolution is really really horrible for any kind of actual work and the ips display suffers from terrible ghosting.

I recently tried some guy's pixel and the 3:2 aspect ratio with the hgh resolution is godsend for productivity.

xsauc was right.
>>
>>61139930
prepare to e gimped by sata 2.
>>
>>61139972
I've switched from a Surface Pro 4 to a T420 for productivity. Honestly, the resolution and aspect ratio changes aren't as bad as I thought they would be coming from that high DPI and 3:2 display. My main issues are viewing angle and colour accuracy, though I'm getting used to them.
