Y/N? The T430 doesn't come with a hard drive or battery so that's why I need the other two. The seller didn't have any information on the resolution so I'm assuming it's some shitty 1366x768 or some shit.

T400 was delivered today. It's in pretty good condition minus a couple scuffs on the lid. The battery is okay, lasts a little over an hour. Keyboard needs a cleaning too. Going to upgrade cpu and add some more ram soon.
Not bad for $50.
>>
>>61011820
intel 320-series SSD's are like 7 years old and they are also only SATA 2

and the "70+" batteries are 6-cell, the "70++" is the 9-cell

and for the T430 it looks like they have a picture of the BIOS screen which should give you the serial number which you can enter here

I'm transferring to usc for their comp sci games program and trying to find a laptop to use during class, are thinkpad's good for programming and school in general? Or are they more oriented towards business?
>>
>>61012233
A laptop is a laptop as far as programming. You'll be fine as long as the screen is good and a decent size. nobody wants to program on a 12 inch shitbook with a 1024x768 screen.
>>
>>61012283
Right I figured as much, I was debating getting a screen that rotates to portrait mode but probably not necessary during class, my desktop can do that.
>>
Growing up in a shitty country like mine, and low on budget, i had to always game on low-end. I remember whem i bought my 8400gs, what a piece. Finishing Crysis 2 there at like, 15fps is probably something i should put at my curriculum.

People here was saying "HD 3000 sucks for games." and, maybe if you're a elitist i could agree with you, but so far, with a dual-channel t420, my results are pretty good. Even the Witcher 2 who only ram at like, 5 fps in my last notebook, now is playbable at 30fps and decent 16:9 resolution.

Actually got quite a bang for the buck i had, pretty satisfied.

Blog is over.

Reposting from last thread, I reinstalled Windows 7 on my T400 and all of the sudden the sound stopped working. Either after I installed Daemon Tools or some Digital Line-In driver. Any ideas how to address? Should I just wipe Windows and start over again since it's a new install? I'd hate to have to download all the updates again.

you should clarify on this
theyre heavier than an ipad
have less battery life than a x230
kind of shitty thermals compared to a x230
the hinge is kind of shit too
and are kind of garbage to draw on
but if you just want something thats touch capable then its good enough.
they are bad tablet replacement if want it to be one
theyre good touch enabled laptops though
that said I'd still go for a x230 as its really light and you could use it like a tablet once you get used to the trackpoint
its also cheaper so you could save up a ipad quicker if you wanted

>Can anyone comment on a T60's performance?
>Web browsing, video, 720-1080p movies, 2hu games will work well enough?
>Does it needs a more lightweight distro or can normally function even on WinXP?

>Web browsing:
Did you mean shitposting? Let's do that on FF because it's the one of the best browsers there is (but 55 version and later are shit)
First installing nightly. Also need to configure that fan speed (which I'm unable to do because I'm a total ass).

Browsing the internet seems to be on similar compared to T61 even with just 1.5gb ram.
Youtube videos however, are quite a challenge to run which is why I installed smplayer. Before I continue with
youtube, I'll try some anime (chobits to be exact which is in 720p) to see if it runs okay and then I'll be trying
something that even my T61 was unable to run smoothly.

After testing youtube videos in 1080p and 30fps, they were not smooth nor were they when I lowered the fps down to
25fps or even 10fps. This iGPU is certainly on its limits, no doubt about that.

Now, the real question. How does it run anime? Well, 720p is no problem at all but 1080p, seems to work when
you select in smplayer, to work on mpv (backend). Anime tends to be 23fps so I can't see anything too dramatic
here. It certainly is better than how it was before.
I also want to point out that theoretical power of the iGPU between T60 and T61 is quite noticeable. According to wikipedia, GMA950 only has 4 executing cores with 133-400Mhz clock speed while X3100 has 8 cores and 500mhz clockspeed.

ps. Keep in mind that I ran these test while T60 was hooked up to 1920x1080 monitor (pushing total resolution of 2944x1080. The result might have been better if ran from 1920x1080 itself without the laptops own screen) I used Lubuntu 17.04.

(B)log ends.

I need a laptop for college in the fall. Will be taking compsci courses.

I *could* get an older thinkpad, I hear they are very compatible with Linux which is a plus.

I have the money for a Dell XPS 13. I've looked all over and they've honestly been getting some really good reviews.

Is there any reason I shouldn't get an XPS 13 besides being overpriced? And even then, they're not nearly as overpriced as a Macbook for what you get.

Also, how is Linux compatibility with a newer laptop like the XPS 13?

Thanks
>>
>>61016023
Thanks, I'm going to be issuing a secure erase via hdparm I think.
Funny how the parted magic people seem to be charging for free GNU utilities like dd and shred.
>>
>>61016051
That's not that thinkpad related honestly you might want to try making your own thread for better feedback
But afaik dell makes a developer edition of the XPS 13 which has full drivers and all that jazz so I'd imagine support is good.

That said Intel being the shitty Jews they are really haven't been able to top ivy bridge until Kaby Lake so you're really not missing out much in the performance department by buying a xx30 thinkpad such a T430 or a X230

Where you do get a upper hand by getting a newer laptop is the screen. Older thinkpads have ass cancer TNs compared to newer ips screens. Also battery life is more or less the same as a older thinkpad with an extended battery. My T430 gets more or less 5 - 4.5 hours on the 6 cell battery.

tdp != power consumption

it is a more noticeable difference with the quadcores of course, but do you really think the dualcore i7s just pull extra performance out of nothing? you can't just run higher clock speeds on the same microarchitecture without affecting power usage.
>>
>>61017550
you know that i7's aren't just higher clocked i5's, right?
>>
>>61017579
they have more cache and sometimes higher-clocked igpus too. sure, a standard voltage i5 will use more power than a low voltage i7, but in that case the i7 won't be outperforming the i5. assuming equal voltage, an i7 is always going to use more power than an i5, because you can't just get more performance for free.

what battery did it come with and what condition is it in? you can use hwinfo64 to see the condition of it

hey /tpg/, i just need a recommendation / educated opinion on what laptop to get
i currently use an x230 tablet (which i bought second-hand for university not knowing about the whole thinkpad community, just wanted a second hand laptop) which is great and i really have had a good time with it. however, i have a few problems with it:
>i love the ips screen, but i never ever use the tablet feature. i dont like how the screen sits so high up
>i dont enjoy 1366x768. it is plenty for what i do at uni, but for recreational programs (one i use the most is fl studio) its not the best. 1080p would be perfect for me.
>the battery is ugly and despite it being a useful handle, it is light enough that i dont need a handle to carry it effectively.
>the touchpad is painfully small. i switch between using the trackpoint and touchpad because i just feel more comfortable using the touchpad for most things, but it is really really small and the bumpy texture doesn't help

i have saved up $500 for a new (second-hand) thinkpad, and i've been looking at the x240 just because of the massive trackpad + smaller battery. apparently i can also change the screen to a 1080p IPS but im not sure how difficult that is. is there anything glaringly wrong with the x240 or any particular CPUs i should avoid before i try to buy one? or are there any other used thinkpads i should try?

Here, have my reasons for selling my 2570p which I posted in an earlier /tpg/ thread--->
Dont listen to the dumb tripfag HP shill ITT. I have a 2570p and while it has an upgradable processor unlike x230, here's what sucks ass-
>shitty screen(I don't think it is upgradable, correct me if I'm wrong)
>mediocre keyboard(no upgrades, x230's is better and yet you can still install the classic one)
>horrible trackpoint(if you are a thinkpad fan you'll probably puke your guts out while using it. This is definitely a no go for any old thinkpad fags who used to own t60s and other early ibms)
>mediocre build quality. The guts are "protected" by a thin pseudo metal covering and I wouldn't want to risk it even accidentally falling down on the ground. Also, while metal is durable, it can acquire dents. Metal also adds to the weight and bulky feeling of the laptop. This could have been solved by using some high grade carbon fibre(like on a thinkpad) which is durable, light weight and feels sleek.
As you can probably guess, I'll be trading it for an x230/x220 or t420/t430. For a thinkpad user, it is not worth it. Also, the upgradable CPU shouldn't be a priority as the price per performance of an upgrade is not justifiable(atleast for me it isn't). It is better to upgrade a desktop computer(where the performance increase is significant). Also, Add to the cost a good thermal paste(and maybe a bigger heat sink).
>Oh, I also missed out that its lacks middle mouse button. My bad. You'd be disappointed by this if you were a loyal thinkpad user

To add further: it basically is just like HP thought, "hey what if we try to merge together a Mac with a thinkpad?"
While their motives were right , what they created in my eyes, was an abomination
>>
>>61022989
>shitty screen
Better than tn x230, worse than IPS x230
>no upgrades
2560p keyboard is different. Chinks are producing custom keyboards. Stop lying
>horrible trackpoint
lie, it's more accurate and objectively better than x230 trackpoint. You can also scroll with two trackpoints keys. Rubber can be replaced with $1 thinkpad one.
>The guts are "protected" by a thin pseudo metal covering
And additional, detachable metal structure inside. Nice lying
>its lacks middle mouse button
Right click button can be used to scroll.

Your excuses for 2570p(which there are a few that I'm too lazy to pinpoint) won't change anyone's mind. Your typical chiclet shit you can find in any other Walmart tier laptop. Lelnovo too has these chiclet KBs but surprisingly, their KBs resemble the older thinkpads in feel. The only problem with newer lelnovo KBs is with the layout of the keyboard. Feeling wise, they are pretty comfy and are comparable to older thinkpad KBs
>In what way?
It felt pretty clumsy as compared to the thinkpad's trackpoint. But oh well, lelnovo trackpoints are the king of trackpoints in the first place, so that was to be expected. You can still get used to HP's trackpoints if you are using trackpoints for the first time. But if you make the jump to a thinkpad, you'll notice the difference instantly. I recommend that you go to one of the computer vendors in your country and compare them both yourself. Try the KBs too
>I thought it's full aluminium compared to X230 plastic.
I dropped it once, and it's back panel came off, exposing the bare internals. I would not call that durable. Also, Thinkpads use carbon fibre, not cheap plastic. Atleast that's what I know and heard about them.
>Also I think it have better eGPU support?
I don't know or care about egpu support on both thinkpads and HPs because I didn't buy one with that in mind.
>>61023624

I still waiting for it to arrive, on a side note I whish I could have got a US keyboard tho as I much prefer it over the UK one. Does anyone know if I could swap out the kayboard to a US layout?

There is no such a laptop as 2470p, and the fact that you repeatedly misspell this proves you don't own one, and you're a fucking retard.
Pic rel, one 35W qm cpu vs two 45W qm cpus in 2570p.

I'm not gonna prove anything to you, you lying piece of shit. There is an entire thread dedicated for people who successfully replaced their CPUs with quad cores and all report there is no throttling after heatsink mod

I'm going to be getting a RAM kit from Amazon and stick a SSD I already have in it. I'm going to use a SATA SSD instead of a NVMe SSD because from what I've read, the speed isn't really noticeable unlike HDD to SSD, but I do like being able to upgrade it in the future.

Did you really need WWAN and NFC? I guess I can understand why people would want WWAN but NFC seems super niche.

What made you get the 6 cell battery? I can't decide between the two because the 6 cell is cheaper and will let it last longer, but it makes it much heavier.
Good pick on getting the 65w adapter. It's like a £1.20 upgrade and I think anyone would be stupid to not get one.

>buys 2570p which is meant for people who want high performance mobile computer
How does a dual core mobile CPU and igpu in 2570p means performance by any stretch of imagination? Also, As I've said before, price/performance for the upgrade is not justified by any means for any sane person. I'm better off upgrading by PC or rather buying a cheap console(if by high performance you mean playing vidya.)
>uses dual core cpu and brags about some things being only a little worse than x230 alternative
That's it. I'm done replying to (you). The fact that you yourself don't know the default specs of 2570p and yet are still shilling for it outs your identity as an autistic deceiver who wants to see people make mistakes while buying a new laptop. Here, have a look at the dual cores of your 2570p you filthy shill--->
http://www8.hp.com/sg/en/pdf/HP_EliteBook_2570p_datasheet_tcm_196_1522515.pdf

2570p uses dual cores by default. It isn't meant for anymore higher a performance than similiar laptops using same CPUs and Igpus

>overreacts and uses retarded logic
Looking for comfort, ease of use and durability is not retarded m8.(and I'm putting it rather simply here, look for the reasons I mentioned above for full details)
Your shilling is kinda retarded and borderline autistic though.

2570p is for people who want to use it with quad core cpus and/or multiple disk drives. Is there something still not understood by you in this sentence? I recommend reading it multiple times.
>price/performance for the upgrade is not justified
if you have to justify spending $50 to get a quad core cpu and then selling old dual core for $20 then, again, 2570p is not for you, as you're clearly too poor.
Who gives a shit about default specs of 2570p? Have I ever recommended stock 2570p to anyone?
You're such a retard.

The wlan is a feature I use a lot atm I just use a USB 4g dongle so having it build is a benefit to me. Nfc is standard on all the t470 doubt I'll use it but I would like to have a play around with it as my moto g5 has Nfc. I got the 6 cell battery as it adds thickness to the laptop on one edge so when you're typing the whole laptop is angled a bit which makes typing easier, and the battery life is a lot better for not a lot more weight. On a side note get the back lit keyboard even if you don't think you'd use it much Its only £15 and it can be turned off even if you won't use it.

Says only a shill who wants to market their laptop because no one is buying it. Also, disk drive in an ultraportable laptop, yeah that's a joke in it of itself. Welcome to 2017, granny, where no one uses disk drives anymore. I've never used one in years and I didnt think of a disc drive while buying 2570p.
>if you have to justify spending $50 to get a quad core cpu and then selling old dual core for $20 then, again, 2570p is not for you, as you're clearly too poor.

Hell, even pre-owned ones are hard to come by for 50$.
Also, for the same price, I could probably get a better upgrade for my desktop. Performance/price of upgrading my desktop is 100x more justifiable than upgrading a laptop just to make it barely functional for high performance tasks. It's 100x better for me to upgrade my PC for the same or a little more price, so that I get a high performance/price ratio and offload my laptop's tasks to my PC.
Also, it's ironical that you are calling me a poorfag when you yourself have to do your high performance computing on an upgraded tin can, while I use a dedicated high performance rig for my high performance needs.

I've thought about upgrading before, but in all measures aside from performance, the newer 15" laptops are objectively worse. Nothing beats the 1920x1200 screen, and I like being able to use the nice old T60 keyboards. The T9400 processor can actually keep up decently, and coupled with a Crucial MX200 it feels quick in most day-to-day tasks. I'm going to be very sad when this computer gets to the point that it can't load most websites at any speed other than excruciatingly slow (as happened to my older T22 years before).

>>61022989
I have a 2570p that I use as my Linux machine (the T500 runs Windows 7). I bought it mainly because it was extremely cheap ($250 in 2015) and while I don't think it is the equal of the Thinkpad, or even the Dell Latitude for that matter, I don't find it to be as bad as most people make it out to be. Screen seems alright aside from the resolution, the keyboard seems fine for general office work, build quality is reasonably good and while the trackpoint is clearly inferior, at least you have one. That being said, I am sure using it as my main machine would be infuriating after a while. I think it functions very well as a portable travel computer, but beyond that, I dunno...

I did, actually! Pulled the one off my T500 keyboard (since, as I said, I use the keyboard from a T60). The Thinkpad nub helps with the tactile feel, but the actual stick HP uses is still inferior. Wanders too much and isn't as precise. Maybe that will change soon as I believe the Thinkpad TrackPoint patents expire this year.

>(FuNction key) A keyboard modifier key that works like a Shift key to activate a second function on a dual-purpose key. Commonly found on laptop keyboards, the Fn key is used to control hardware functions such as screen brightness and speaker volume. It may also be found on extra small keyboards for desktop computers, typically for Page Up and Page Down, which are combined with Up Arrow and Down Arrow

So it would make more sense to be placed in easy to reach place without having to worry about mistakingly pressing the wrong key.

I guess chicklet keyboard don't have this issue, that's why it was moved since you'd be using the Ctrl key more.

Disk drive is a broad term which consist of optical drives, HDDs,floppy drives etc. Naturally I thought you were talking about the optical drive, considering how you were speaking in so glorifying manner about it, like it was the second coming of Christ. This is understandable because optical drive isn't something we'd find in an ultra portable laptop. I admit that I made a mistake while reading, that is, I ignored the term "multiple" before "drives"
So yeah if you mean by sheer amount of max storage possible on the laptop, of course 2570p has it better than say x230. The question is, whether "more storage=better" is true? I reckon, in most cases the answer is no. X230 for example, can house a decent amount of max data possible. 2570p goes overboard in this case. So no I won't take multiple drives as some glorifying feature over x230 unless I was using my laptop for acting like a server for cloud drives.
Also, its hilarious how you are completely silent about your "50$ quad core cpu" claim.
Tl;dr-->retarded shills calling other people retards all the while trying to force their lies down other people's throat, remain what they are, retarded shills.
>>61025801
Oh, okay. Tell me about a quad core ivy bridge CPU that offers significantly better performance than the stock CPU. It should cost 50$. Also, if I can find a better upgrade for my PC for the same price, keeping in mind the performance per price ratio, then your suggestion is invalid. You'll then have to suggest me another one. Go on, tell me about it.
Also, I can install an i7 3840qm in a t420 too, via core boot method, and that'd probably be cheaper than upgrading a 2570p
>>61025979

I had Windows on it for about two months after I bought it (at the time I was deal-booting the T500 since I had a nice big 500 GB HDD) and as I recall it was still kind of shit compared to the T500's TrackPoint under Windows, even with the proper drivers from HP.

I've tried to defend my Elitebook best as I can but sometimes you just gotta recognize when another product has the upper hand. Not necessarily saying it's you doing this, but whenever I see Elitebook owners they remind me of a neighbour I have who constantly tries to find ways to claim that his 2006 Chevy Malibu is the equivalent of my 2005 Toyota Camry, despite the fact that the latter is in much better shape rust-wise, and is more reliable despite having shittier maintenance, higher mileage and more abuse. The Malibu (Elitebook) is not a BAD car (laptop), but it's just not as good as the Camry (Thinkpad).
>>

but I do admit this in every thread. It's just 2570p has different purpose than x230. Usually /g/ (more advanced users, lets say) care about having as much resources as possible, so 2570p is a neat choice for such people.
x230 is better if you mostly care about comfort (ie.better trackpoint, 7 row keyboards, IPS screen etc). But saying that 2570p is absolutely shit because "objectively noone ever wants quad cores in small laptops" like this retard >>61027269 is implying is just a lie and trolling attempt.

Nothing m8. This precisely what I'm saying except for the upgrade part. I'm arguing that upgrading the CPU is a waste of money too. Basically, shilling for 2570p in /tpg/ and using the upgradeable CPU meme as a massive positive over other similar products is asinine . I was browsing the tlp functions right now (Doing some research.), maybe you could try something:

http://linrunner.de/en/tlp/docs/tlp-linux-advanced-power-management.html

There are some nice exclusive commands for thinkpads, maybe it would be useful.

So, I want to buy a x200 Motherboard, install it into my x201 chassis, and then install Libreboot onto that. I know that swapping the motherboards is easy, but I'm uncertain about the Libreboot flashing procedure... I have a device with gpio pin output/input, but I wouldn't mind someone to walk me through it and hold my hand... Anyone here know of this process and willing to help me out, or know anyone/anywhere that could help and hold my hand?

Join my IRC and chat me up, thanks a ton!!

Will this plug into the W530?

Sell it on ebay.de, it's pretty central Yurop.

I buy from refurb shops, cheap and plentiful. Granted, the T420 I'm looking at will be about 300$ but that's with replacement battery, dock, a socket+car charger and so much other bullshit.
>>
>>61030528
Yes, but it won't work.
>>

Any way to do Blu Ray on the W530?
>>

It will work...
don't listen to this retard.

Should computrace be turned off if buying used? I want to buy from someone who says they bought a bunch of t420s in bulk from a business, yet the computrace reads as active in the the BIOS. Wouldn't the company disable that feature before selling?
>>
>>61030753
No it won't.
I've tried to use BluRay optic drive from HP DV6 Pavilion on T420, and the thing didn't even get power.
So either the ultrabay is dead, or there's something missing.
>>
>>61030818
dv6 used 5V+12V powers. This one is a modern 5V one at there is no reason why it couldn't work.
>>
>>61030789
Tell them that you'd like to buy it, but wont until they disable computrace
Because you can't disable it without whoever originally set it up deactivating it first.
>>
Fuck this
I'm going to install Gentoo on my T30. If not successul then parabola or archlinux with openrc
>inb install LFS
>>
>>61030888
I thought you could phone computrace up, give them proof of payment and they unlock it
>>
>>61031024
>not funtoo
>>
>>61031055
If you can give them proof that you bought computrace then maybe
But they wont just disable it because you bought it off some dude on ebay. I already tried
That said as long as it's not marked as stolen you'll be fine
>>
>>61030834
>5V+12V powers
But the connection is the same.
>>
>>61031156
yes. So?

just wanted to say windows is a fucking piece of shit
>>

It's always been a tossup for me
sometimes only windows works out of the box on some machines, and sometimes only linux works out of the box
sometimes neither works out of the box and sometimes both work out of the box

they fuck around with other stuff on the right side of the keyboard, as well as shifting all the Shift+1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,0 one to the left to fit in a dedicated ß key. I hate having to type in German on my (UK) keyboard, I know where all the keys are without having to try them first but the layout is just so stupid and needlessly different that it pisses me off nonetheless. And don't get me started on the Y-Z switch.

Is there a way to replace a stock ANSI keyboard with an ISO one?

SATA connector is designed to provide 5V and 12V lines.
But it doesn't mean it has to. Old devices were draining so much power than both 5V and 12V lines were required. For example all modern 2,5" HDDs are using 5V line only, while 2,5" SATA/SAS server drives require 5V+12V lines and these use same SATA connector. 3,5" HDDs also got same connector and also use 5V and 12V lines.
>>
>>61031318
i meant ubuntu® software updater
>>
>>61031353
So they need 17V?
>>
>>61031378
No... 5V is usually used for powering up PCB, 12V is for the disk rotor.
>>
>>61031454
And the xx20 thinkpad only provide 5 V for the ultrabay?
This would mean it won't power 2.5" HDD if it need 5V+12V if it was used with HDD caddy.
>>
>>61031511
>And the xx20 thinkpad only provide 5 V for the ultrabay?
yes
>This would mean it won't power 2.5" HDD if it need 5V+12V if it was used with HDD caddy.
as I said above every single mobile device today uses 5V only. Server drives are an exception.
>>
>>61031511
no 2.5" hard drive uses 12 volts
>>
>>61031759
Then how does the ultrabay work?
Does it upvoltage the 5V to 12V?
>>
>>61031788
it doesn't
everything you put in there is 5 volts
>>
>>61031788
Are you mentally retarded?
>>
>>61022989
>you are a thinkpad fan you'll probably puke your guts out while using it. This is definitely a no go for any old thinkpad
this was the worst part of it all
There is really no point in even having the trackpoint on those HP units because they don't have the proper mouse buttons to make scrolling possible like you would on a Thinkpad. Touchpads are shit. It's so much easier to use a trackpoint
>>
>>61032787
See this, anon. And yeah, I agree with you.
