I just installed my first ever Linux system, putting a Debian 9/XFCE on a brand new Lenovo. I can confirm that everything just werks out of the box. My only problem was that I can't get temps for the Intel 405 GPU. I ran sensors-detect in root, said y to everything but still nothing. My GPU shows fine in lspci and OpenGL info.
I read somewhere that Mesa Intel GPU drivers aren't as good as Win drivers. Is it true?
Also I get great CPU temps. I mention because people complained about overheating on Linux but I'm getting 40 idle and 50ish under load.

You may think it is a matter of years but i can ensure you that Fuschia is full effort from Google. The kernel is actually being developed by veterans from Palm, Apple, BeOs, ... and the OS already has a UI made for both the mobile and the desktop. Fuschia is not an experimental project but is intended to be the next dominant OS for desktop, mobile, and cloud/server computing.

Do I need to forward SMTP ports or set up a local email server first?
>>
>>60972481
I think it just uses the sendmail program, so probably.
>>
>>60972481
Ah, you want to send mail to a foreign host. Quite a different beast.

I know very little about this. There's a good chance you already have an email server, but other servers will probably reject your mail if your host doesn't have a domain name - I think it goes like that.

If you don't plan on hosting a full-fledged mail server on that machine, I think what you'd need to do is instruct sendmail, or whoever it is, to use an external email server instead of the local one. Pulling this out of my ass, though.
>>
Dumb question, but it's Linux, so seems like the right thread.

So I'm installing Mint/Mate on a Dell Latitude D531 (https://www.cnet.com/products/dell-latitude-d531/specs/), and it's been installing for easily 20 minutes. PC is old as shit, but it seems stuck at the same spot. Should I bounce it and retry?
>>
>>60972522
>>60972506
Hmm, installing sendmail now. Basically I have a server for SSH and SVN but its external IP is dynamic for the moment. I want to set up a cronjob that finds out the external IP daily at 4 am, then sends an email to my personal account at openmailbox.org which tells me how to reach my server.
>>
>>60972538
isnt sendmail an archaic vulnerability ridden MTA
>>
>>60972538
>>60972559
I think what you should do in this case is forget about cron's mailing function, find a scriptable email client that can work with any usual SMTP/POP/IMAP account (maybe cone, alpine?), then write a script that fetches your external IP address and then runs that email client to send email to you.

I think this is in fact what you're currently trying to do, but just in case.
>>
>>60972664
Gotcha. Would have been convenient if I could just let cron take care of it but I guess this is what I'll have to do.
Got any recommendations?
>>
>>60972670
Never used any. A quick scan of mutt's manpage doesn't suggest it can use external accounts. In my repos I found the two I already mentioned and also "sendemail" which clearly states it works from the command line (the other two might just have ncurses, interactive interfaces for all I know) and has few dependencies.

Does anyone know how to yank text in vim out to whatever clipboard that works in other applications?
I have something selected in visual mode and I want to be able to paste this in a graphical application, say firefox.
The
"*y

trick does not work and neither does
"+y

Currently, the fastest method is to use the mouse, then paste it into a text editor to use block edit to remove the UI elements, then paste it, but there must be a way to do it.
I could also just create a script where I cut the right number of fields out, then pipe it to xclip, but it seems a bit over the top for something I rarely do.
>>
Finally got some basic automatic backups running on my machines

Still a lot of room for improvement but it's better than nothing
>files from per-host list of important folders are archived and encrypted with per-host passphrase
>then pushed to dropbox
>then all encrypted acrhives are pulled from dropbox and stored on each host
>dropbox backups are removed after X days, host backups are removed after Y days

Should be reliable enough

I don't like making backups with plain archives, though, I need at least to switch to binary diffs, but I also don't want to use any solution that uses it's own format

I don't have problems pasting, I have problems getting stuff copied.
It doesn't matter what method I use to paste, I always paste the last thing I highlighted (xsel) or the last thing I copied (xclip) (or whatever trivial bullshit it is called).
Vim can send the text to 12 other buffers only vim can use, but vim cannot send it to these as visual mode is not the same as selection.
It is a bit weird since it is such a trivial thing you would think they had a method where you could in a single key yank the text and write or pipe it to a file.
It seems like a thing vim could do. with or without a graphical toolkit.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

The free distribution guidelines require that a distro should not include or recommend nonfree software.

>debian is not free because they have non-free repos?
That's the meme but only half of the reasons Debian isn't on the list. The main problem is that Debian recommends nonfree software (inclusive enabling said nonfree repo) in their documentations.

By the way, Debian and the FSF still try to find a solution and have had conferences about the topic. It's not like the FSF dislikes Debian or vice versa.
>>
>>60975057
>debian is not free because they have non-free repos?
Yes, can't you read or just prefer to live in a delusion?
FSF acknowledges Debian's (and related projets) social contruct that they fullfill in their best intent however the rules are clear. Non-free software = non-free distribution.

Debian project simply user's convenience to be able to use whatever hardware they have at hand rather than arbitrary FSF definition.
>>
GPL is too much of a socialistic ideology that will undermine capitalism, MIT/BSD is the only true freedom.
>>
>>60975150

you mean the software itself? that's out of the scope of the aur
bad software is bad no matter how you get it

on the other hand, since the AUR is centralized, and has a commenting/reporting system, it does make it possible to call out bad packages/software, something that you can't do if you picked up the sources yourself from the software creators' own site

thats an interesting concept, using youtube as the back end instead of something like spotify or itunes.

as best I can tell though youtube-dl only allows for some post processing of the audio quality otherwise you're pulling it at the rather poor bitrate that youtube offers it's audio at. with other things you can pull a direct 320kbps audio stream which would seem favorable in an audio program.

I'm pretty sure that is all. Try running anything with sudo afterwards, it'll throw some error message if it can't resolve your new hostname. That's the only breakage I remember experiencing.

278th for debian 9

No, that's true for any package, even those in the official repos
>>
>>60977963
No. You don't need to set your hostname for 127.0.0.0/8
>>
>>60978042
Hm? Maybe you don't, but I most certainly do.
>>
>>60977942
I just googled how to change linux hostname and can confirm that there are.

You have no real knowledge about politics. Your knowledge starts with pathetic and obnoxious internet memes in the shallow end and ends there. You are so stupid that you can't even realize how retarded you are.
I think I became more stupid by just responding to you.
>>
(sorry, posted this in the wrong thread originally)
I just installed Kubuntu and everything seems very laggy to me. Dragging around programs in Windows 10 used to be super smooth. Also, videos don't seem to run at 60 fps. Haven't had time to check games yet.

Neither can you you retarded idiot. I don't even care about politics. I don't know anything about it, but I know enough to tell that you're an idiot who knows nothing but the latest 4chan and internet memes. All you can do is spout buzzwords and buzzphrases you see online as proven by your post.
Kill yourself.

Just got Mint. It's buggy as fuck. I try opening firefox, and when I open a new tab, I get the same screen as my previous tab. When I try opening a browser, my cursor "lags" and I get a bunch of fire fox logos around my screen. Also, my screen flickers.
Should I reinstall or is it my laptop? This didn't happen before when I installed mint on my other computer.
