Wizards assemble !

Advanced users of GNU/Linux (and I mean advanced), remember to try Source Mage GNU/Linux. True source-based distribution, and (in contrast with Gentoo and Arch) is:
Free from obfuscated and pre-configured code.
Fully committed to GPL, uses only free software (as in freedom) in their main package.
With even the documentation licensed as FDL.
Without 3rd party patches, sensible defaults or masked packages.
Doesn't need obfuscated python libraries, only bash.
Uses clean dependencies as they came from upstream developers, which by the same provides instant updates.
Can heal broken installs.
Can also use flags.

Do you like Arch Linux's AUR? Do you like Gentoo's portage (or ports-like) package manager? With SMGL's "sorcery" you get all that. Making new spells (packages) not found in the grimoire (repository) is easy http://sourcemage.org/Spell/Book

Bash hackers welcome! Come and join http://sourcemage.org/

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

I don't know much about BSDs, but I'm pretty sure you can install Pulseaudio on those.

Well Linux is like less than 1% of users on desktop and even less if you take in account mobile platforms
And Ubuntu, which is probably the majority of Linux installs, ships Pulse by default

Taking in account that majority of desktop Linux users are just bottom feeders, chances that someone out of FF devs or maintainers uses non-pulsaudio install are incredibly slim, so why would any one of them maintain alsa support?

Are you an idiot? What do you think those flags do? Do you think that adding a flag will automatically make a program maintain and write itself? Now that I said it, this might be true, because there was one guy who thought that if he added a Qt flag to every program, that they would automatically get Qt support instead of GTK.

Hint: it won't if Firefox requires Pulseaudio to work.

So my mail directory changed from "Sent" to ".Sent" for some reason. Now I need to copy all mails from one to another.

Kinda like this

You don't? You cd to /var/mail/, where your domain directories are, and the names you have to loop over are right there.

Just do something "for i in *" and then "mv $i/Sent $i/.Sent". A list of directories instead of "*" if you don't want to match them all.

Spend a few minutes researching the proper for loop syntax for your shell and doing simple tests, and when you come back someone will have called me a retard for not quoting variables and posted a more thorough and safer example.

Contemplating integrating my home server and pc into one machine. Anyone ever fucked with this? Would it be smarter to run multiple VMs for different services or just start and stop X when I want a desktop? Should I mess with containers? Currently I've got a small server running a firewall, network storage, and routing wired and wireless traffic. It only uses like 500 MB RAM and barely needs a single core.

Which driver should I use? AMDGPU or the other one? Do you have a relevant link to the arch wiki?
>>
>>60946753
R9 270x should also have support for the new drivers for GCN-based cards: the free amdgpu and proprietary amdgpu-pro.
More info: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AMDGPU
The Southern Islands and Sea Islands section applies to you so you'll probably have to blacklist the radeon module if you want to use the new free amdgpu driver.
Also note that recent Archlinux kernels have the support compiled in so you won't have to recompile anything.

linux babby here, still keen to learn

what does it mean when people say "compiling software from source"? and why do they do it? is it so they can customize the software itself and then install it so they get a special, personalized version? i saw someone mentioning that they compiled emacs from source in another thread because the repo was out of date. if this is the case, how can you be certain that the old version you compile will be compatible with your (presumably) new version of linux?
>>
>>60946957
I have tried it on both a live CD of Ubuntu and Gparted itself, but for some reason it just don't werks
>>
>>60946931
To expand on this:
Your card is supported by both free drivers - radeon and amdgpu. But the amdgpu driver is better and recent versions have very good OpenGL support that rivals the proprietary amdgpu-pro.
So if you can get it to work that's good for you. If not, the older radeon driver is all right for 2D acceleration.

amdgpu-pro is only officially supported on Ubuntu, RHEL/CentOS, and SLES/SLED. But as always there are unofficial packages on AUR that might work. Or not.
These days, the only point of the proprietary driver is good Vulkan performance since the free driver has equal or slightly better OpenGL performance.

>literally google "compiling software"

>>
>>60946977
>what does it mean when people say "compiling software from source"?
Taking the source code and making a binary from it instead of using the one provided in the repositories.
>is it so they can customize the software itself and then install it so they get a special, personalized version?
Yes, some features can be selected or deselected before compiling. Some packages where performance are important are compiled for the machine due to subarch compilation. There's lower divisions of x86 and x86_64, code compiled for a specific processor is usually 1-5% faster than the generic code.
>if this is the case, how can you be certain that the old version you compile will be compatible with your (presumably) new version of linux?
The reverse, the software is newer than your version. In theory, you can't, but they wouldn't break compatbility for no good reason.

a software must be written and compiled to have an executable. Compiling software from source mean building the executable by taking the source code

sometimes a software isn't on a repo and you have to manually install it by compiling it from source.
Or maybe you want to remove features or add features from it, install it on a specific location...

Since "files" that we refer to by name are just hard links to the inode that links to the actual data and rm only unlinks them from the corresponding inode, shouldn't there be an easy way to undo deletion before the data is overwritten?
Let's say I make an alias function for rm to save the inode numbers into some temp file before doing anything.
Would I be able to remake the hard link if I know the inode number, if nothing has changed on the hard drive in the meantime?

>To recover data from a specific partition, the device name for the partition, which will be in the format /dev/sdXN (X is a letter and N is a number.), must be known. The example used here is /dev/sda4, but your system might use something different (For example, MMC card readers use /dev/mmcblkNpN as their naming scheme.) depending on your filesystem and device configuration. If you are unsure, run df, which prints currently mounted partitions.
>Once which partition data is to be recovered from has been determined, simply run:
# extundelete /dev/sda4 --restore-file directory/file

>Any subdirectories must be specified, and the command runs from the highest level of the partition, so, to recover a file in /home/SomeUserName/, assuming /home is on its own partition, run:
# extundelete /dev/sda4 --restore-file SomeUserName/SomeFile

>To speed up multi-file recovery, extundelete has a --restore-files option as well.
>To recover an entire directory, run:
# extundelete /dev/sda4 --restore-directory SomeUserName/SomeDirectory

>For advanced users, to manually recover blocks or inodes with extundelete, debugfs can be used to find the inode to be recovered; then, run:
# extundelete --restore-inode inode

>inode stands for any valid inode. Additional inodes to recover can be listed in an unspaced, comma-separated fashion.
>Finally, to recover all deleted files from an entire partition, run:
# extundelete /dev/sda4 --restore-all

This is awesome, thanks.
Don't know why unmount is required though.

if arch is meant to build your own system from ground up, why does it use systemd?

Because everything you know about Arch is a meme: https://lists.archlinux.org/pipermail/arch-general/2015-July/039443.html

For some reason my alt+spacebar to open the "search" function has stopped working on Kubuntu as has my side bar, which has just poofed away.

how to fix systemd
- build a separate package for every component
- write an alternative to every component
- write dummy packages that provide sysv and openrc compatibility and wrappers for the syscalls

oh wait that's fucking retarded
systemd is not posix

I read about that here
https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebianOn/Thinkpad/Yoga14/jessie

will the 16gb be enough for / and /usr? Checking my system, it seems that I have used like 60 Gb in my system besides /home.

i'm going back to being a linux user today.

i used to be big on arch and debian sid, but i got sick of kernel updates preventing me from booting my system.

anyways i settled on manjaro with my fingers crossed that i won't have to revert kernel upgrades all the time.

lol at how shit calamares is and lol and there not even being a cli installer available.

i'm ending up having to install to a rando partition, then copy everything over to my luks/lvm volumes.
