Thanks for the tip.

Still my requests stills valid >>60913498

>>
>>60915013
Also for less sound get rubber o-rings (the thick ones) to stop the thud of keys bottoming out.
>>
>>60915106
Does that make a blue switches kb usable at night without awaking everyone in the house?
>>
Miami is the most obnoxious keyset.
>>
>>60915262
No, blue switches still have annoying clicky sound.
>>
>>60914633

How long does BestGear take to deliver? are they decent?
>>
>>60915388
Decent buy take awhile to delieve.
>>
So what's the lightest clicky switch I can get? I use Gateron white (35g) but would like clicky switches for a few keys on my next board I build. I see conflicting information about throwing lighter switches into something like a blue (I.e. It losing its click) is blue the lightest I can go, or can I put the spring from a white in and have it still be clicky
>>
>>60915262
Switches have two ways to make sound:]
>smashing into the keyboard when they bottom out
>mechanic sounds in the activation mechanism
Buckling springs, for example, make a loud click when the spring hits the side of the enclosure (and the pad tilts and hits the plate/PCB). Blue switches are made to emulate that, to a certain degree. These are internal mechanism sounds. You can't reduce this sound, at least not without some rather crazy modifications of the switch.

Meanwhile, something like browns or reds only make a sound when they hit the bottom - the mechanism is entirely silent. They are still pretty loud though, provided you bottom out. Adding a rubber ring to dampen the impact makes them much softer. Adding an o-ring to a blue switch will dampen the impact sound, but the mechanism click will still be present - so instead of a "click" and a "thock" happening at nearly the same time for something like a "thick", you'll just get a crisp "click".
>>
>>60915666
Perfectly explained, thanks.

From what I've read blues are better for typing, that's why they were my first choice, but I'm not sure about the noise. I'm at my parent's house and I will use the computer for typing at night on weekends.

I'll take the advice on gateron browns, found this:

Hi what is up with these keyboard fonts that make your KB look like toy for kid and why are they so much more expensive?

At first I hated them and praised blank/side print

but the longer I stare at It...It's kinda interesting.

Anyway what are /mkg approved budget keycaps? [world wide shipping included]

>>60916616
Thanks doc
Anything made my gateron or npkc is good if you have a small budget
>>
Browsed through a few keycap sets on memedrop and somehow, when you just browse their respective discussions, they all had either manufacturing or fitting problems, strange haptic or other quality deficits.
Is this a general thing with keycap sets? What to watch out for when I want decent quality and not rape the stems of my switches?

It looks similar to some fonts used on old terminals, I guess that's the reason. Don't like it though.

>>
>>60918915
i have the first version that only has red leds. I guess it's worth it? the trade off to hot swappable switches is that it doesn't feel as rigged/solid. I tried a razor and logitech mech in store and they felt a tad bit more solid. less wiggly. the caps and switches don't fall off or anything. I'm not trying to imply they're loose, just not as firm, side to side.

I like it. if a switch gets noticeable wear, I can rotate it with a less used key. I wish i didn't update the firmware because the windows key is always on now.

I have been out the MK game for a little over two years now, last colorway I purchased was when I was part of the original Miami Nights group buy.

I am seeing a lot more keyboards with LED lighting built into the case to form an accent around the frame, I remember only a few cases back then did this and they were truly ridiculous in expense and sold out literally immediately.

Are there any keyboards out there now of good quality that do this? Preferably something in Greens, or Purples (I remember hearing those things were the second coming of Christ back when they were still being tested and only a few switches were being given away to hype them up, so it's been awhile.)

until now i thought 90wpm was pretty decent. but i think everyone here would advise me to learn to touch type. but i guess since i'm used to typing this way it's going to take a while. thank you.
>>60927644
>the other ones are memes
desu this is the first time i'm actually hearing that. others have said that though colemak and dvorak and whatever are faster it's hard to type on other computers if we get used to those.
>>
>>60928503
it's not all about the typing speed. the big difference is in comfort and strain reduction and you'll type more smoothly at a more consistent speed

and there are plenty of criticisms/skepticisms about dvorak and colemak. for example dvorak users would have a tendency to be obsessed about typing speed and be more likely to practice typing a lot. colemak has less up and down movement but still a lot of sideways movement which is much worse than up and down movement.

https://viralintrospection.wordpress.com/2010/09/06/a-different-philosophy-in-designing-keyboard-layouts/#problem
>>
>>60928503
By objective metrics, qwerty is a horrible layout. Things like dvorak and colemak greatly reduce finger travel distance, distribute the workload more evenly between hands and fingers, and make more common combinations generally easier to type.

Beyond that it's all subjective. Hundreds of thousands of people touch-type on qwerty just fine and don't suffer from any finger or wrist problems. Could they type faster on an alternative layout? If they could, would the effort of unlearning all their muscle memory and re-learning it be worth it?
>>
>>60928503
>>60928711
>>60928730
Every layout has its flaws. For instance, Dvorak over-emphasises hand alternation. That may not seem bad, but type out quickly (on qwerty) "alsowk" and then "wefjio" - the second one has three times less hand alternation, but is easily as comfortable to type - if not more - than the first. There's also the fact that Dvorak was created in 1920 or so - meaning that even if all its assumptions were correct and led to an optimal layout, you could probably improve on it using modern tools and simulations.
Meanwhile, Colemak has the aforementioned problem of demonising vertical movement when typing, say, "i" is at least as easy, if not easier, than "h" or "g", from the base hand position.
Personally I spent an autistic amount of time comparing various layouts, and on paper Workman actually looks the best. At least, I like its initial assumptions a whole lot - keep same-hand comfortable chords as frequent as possible, reduce the strain on pinkies, and use a weighted "difficulty" graph for key positions instead of proclaiming "the home row is perfection, everything else is heresy!". However, the author used an ortholinear layout to create it, and while that by no means invalidates using workman on a normal staggered keyboard, it's still more optimised for ortholinear layouts. That said, if you're actually going to go and learn workman, you're probably also at - or past - the level of autism required to get an ortholinear kb.
Another thing is that it's such a niche layout that it's incredibly hard to find testimonies of people actually using it. (Another effect of this is that unlike dvorak or colemak, it doesn't come prepackaged with modern OSes, so when using a different computer you'll need to either install the layout yourself, or use a different one.) This means that it's kinda hard to know whether it's a meme or not.
>>
>>60929033
Also sites like http://patorjk.com/keyboard-layout-analyzer/#/main also seem to show it as underperforming compared to colemak - but again, it's hard to know whether it's because the assumptions as to what makes a good layout used to calculate the metrics on that site are flawed, or whether the layout itself is flawed.

And one more thing to remember: for all these flaws all these layouts have, if you were to analyse qwerty with such scrutiny, you'd find far worse flaws. It's extremely unergonomic. So these types of discussions and comparisons between already excellent layouts may make it seem like they're not that good after all, but that's just because qwerty is so shit that nobody even bothers to talk about it in these comparisons.
>>
>>60928730
>would the effort of unlearning all their muscle memory and re-learning it be worth it?

Don't forget being unable to effectively use standard equipment anymore, such as employer supplied workstations.
>>
>>60929228
If you're using colemak or dvorak, basically every OS comes with them preinstalled. Just change the keymap.

If you're using something like workman then that's definitely a problem. Many people report being relatively comfortable in two (or more!) layouts, but if you have no choice but to use one layout all day at work, and then want to use a different one every evening at home, then that's probably going to be too troublesome.

1391401 Model M from 1983 that got stolen :(
I'm looking to replicate the feel as much as possible without buying another Model M or a Unicomp.
>Special
Where do you guys get good-looking keycaps for reasonable prices? I'm looking for something vintage-looking and two-tone, PBT, without costing a fortune. I liked the originative set with japanese and latin legends but it's gone now.
Fully-programmable would also be a huge plus

Thanks
>>
>>60929284
TADA68 is a fully programmable 65% keyboard. The only difference between the two versions is that one has a metal case, while the other is plastic
>>
>>60929309
Do they still make these? It seems like their website has a new keyboard called SABER. Also fully programmable 68 key. Is it the same thing?

Should I be worried about gateron vs cherry?
Coming from a model M I don't want something cheap feeling.
>>
>>60929284
Cherry switches feel nothing like Buckling springs
>. I liked the originative set with japanese and latin legends but it's gone now.
That was made by gateron, who also make an enjoypbt set with the same colors for 80 bucks on aliexpress. I know the TADA 68 has the same EnjoyPBT keycaps as that originative one that come stock on the keyboard. If you want nice keycaps look at KBDFans or massdrop
>>
>>60929375
The saber is just a rebranded tada after candykeys and aliexpress started selling them. They are identical in build quality and features. The originative one is just more expensive and has more switch options
>>
>>60929407
Looks like originative is selling saber cases, so I guess it's an official rebrand.
>>60929380
They don't necessarily have to feel like buckling springs, I just want them to give the same impression of quality and tactility and the same "quality" feeling that reassures you that they will easily last 30 years
>>
>>60929407
Why would they rename when some random shop starts selling them?
>>
Where can I get a TADA68 for the cheapest ? Is taobao price + agent + shipping cheaper than ali price ? Also please recommend other 60-65% keyboards with cherry/gateron greens.

It really depends on how much a tada weighs, but a tada in taobao cost 399.00 yuan or around 60 usd. Then shipping is around 30-40 from the us so it won't really be that much cheaper.

Get an ortholinear one. olkb makes a couple. TypeMatrix is another decent one, and has a great layout, but it's membrane.

Ergodox and keyboard.io are both split, but not in the "cut the keyboard in half" way. Not sure if that helps or not. Either way they also have a carefully designed layout and I guess you could just place the two halves next to each other if you want. Or you can go full meme and build a Dactyl (curved ergodox variant).

Nice trips, but the classic g80s have doubleshot ABS keycaps that even give PBT a run for their money. That's why people still buy them, not for the keyboard but for the keycaps. They usually sell them on ebay, but its better to find an old keyboard and harvest the keycaps from it. Also no one sell brand new german keycaps for that low of a price.

I'm probably talking out of my ass but maybe something's rusted? You could try opening it up and checking how the PCB and contacts look. Honestly I have no idea.

My personal experience is limited to havingpoured (not spilled) juice on laptop keyboard like a retard, wiped it because "eh it'll work", continued using it, and hasn't had any problems except a few keys being somewhat sticky and squeaky for a week or so

I would open it but I don't want to void the warranty
It's been over a week and don't think that I had used it for more than one minute combined since then
and it was only clean water ffs
could that really do so much damage?
I'm pretty sure there are people who bathed thier keyboard in water before with no problems

On the other hand, I spilled water on my laptop keyboard before and ended up having to replace the motherboard.
Maybe I just have bad luck

fuck's sake, even for $150 all you get is a mediocre piece of shit with shitty abs keycaps

and don't get a fullsize board

your color scheme isn't even all that special you can get similar color thick pbt blanks for cheap

You already voided the warranty when you spilled the water, most of the time it's pretty clear when somebody had a spill. Also if it's just a sticker for the warranty, you could try to pry it off whole with a sharp flat knife.
Just open it up and clean what you can with isopropylalcohol.

Day 2 of Leopold MX Blacks.

Good thing I didn't get blues or browns. The smoothness is great. I'm not feeling 60g though, i'd need 100-150g switches not to bottom it out as hard as I do now.
Almost there for "silent" typing a bit tricky with linear switch, at least it doesn't rattle like my cheap membrane.
Smooth, and I love the sound.

it's a strawman argument because no one should be typing with that posture. flipping the spacebar works better if you have your thumb in a neutral position as opposed to curling it.

t-rex arms with hover elbows, forearms parallel to desk => normal spacebar preferred

elbows at desk surface level, forearms at a slight incline => flipped spacebar possibly preferred

the problem is that the spacebar should probably have a flat profile

with cherry/oem profile you have two shitty options and you just have to choose which is less shit

interestingly, approximately 50% of the reddit mechanical keyboard community prefers flipping their cherry/oem profile spacebar. it's a higher percentage than i would have expected if flipping the spacebar had no merit besides memes, since it deviates from the default configuration and it's a relatively new phenomenon.

Ordered one of this chink shit just a couple hours ago. Was having an hard time finding a brown switches, blue backlight, 80% keyboard that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, so I just said fuck it and got an rgb one - I'll just set a solid backlight on it. Also curious if I'll get Cherry or Gateron switches on this, as apparently it can sport either brand on manufacturing, hopefully not mismatching them on the same board. Oh well, in a few weeks I guess I'll see how worth this is of 70€.

are there seriously people that will spend upwards of 20 dollars on a single keycap?

why?
>>
>>60944952
Cause its expensive if you make it yourself. A good silicone mold will set you back a several hundred bucks, and depending on the complexity maybe even $1000. Its much better to buy a keycap for 20 bucks then to make one yourself.

I do that too, I never once in my life had a look at how to properly type, I just naturally progressed to touch typing and for some reason this is the way I learned. I'm not interested in changing, I manage a decent enough 80WPM, that's fine for me and for what I do.

>>60946512
$1000+ on a set of keycaps IS unreasonably expensive. Unless you're actually a richfag (meaning above middle class, not just "not a poorfag"), which isn't a lot of people.

$10 or $20 on a novelty cap to put on some random key you want to decorate is quite reasonable, provided you actually want to decorate it. The anon you're calling a poorfag probably doesn't see the point of sticking ugly unergonomic keys that don't match the rest of his keyboard, so to him such a purchase seems like throwing away the $20, which justifiably makes him wonder why anyone would do that.

rest is 1.5m and more

Coiling cables is simple tho
you need 1.stick 2.hair dryer and drill

take cable, make circles around stick, make it hot, then take it off the stick ,put one side in drill, hold the other and reverse the coiling

last step is optional, but makes the coiling but higher quality .

How are wireless mech keyboards nowadays? I bought a Filco Majestouch a year or two ago, and while I love it, I hate having to deal with bluetooth disconnecting and reconnecting. Are there any wireless options out there that use 2.4/5ghz USB a la Logitech wireless?
>>
>>60947824
wireless keyboards are even worse than wireless mouses.
If you wait 1-2 more years it will be good to go.
1.Delay issues
2.Connection issue
3.Battery issues
not worth it yet.
