>How to assemble a PC, select components & more. (somewhat outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Build_a_PC

CPUs:
>G4560 - budget builds (<$500) unless G4600/G4620/i3-7100 is heavily discounted
>R5 1500x - generally all you need for 60fps with power to spare. No i5
>R5 1600 - best value for higher fps gaming & mixed usage; 1600x if you too lazy to OC
>i7-7700k - bad value but good for higher FPS; may have heat issues
>R7/Xeon/Threadripper/i9 - compute/Multitask/mixed use

Graphics:
>G4560 iGPU is fine for desktop stuff and very light game
>1050Ti for low budget. Drop settings if not Freesync/Gsync on newer games; RX560 if discounted <$90
>RX570 4GB - 1080p@60+hz, running most maxed; older games at 144+hz
>RX580 8GB - 1440p@60+hz, inject SMAA & drop settings
>1060 - Generally outperformed by the RX 580 and GSync costs more; consider if AMD is not an option (ie CUDA/miners buying all RX570s)
>1070 - if on heavy sale-ish
>1080 - 1080p@100-144+hz maxed; 1440p at lower hz.
>1080Ti - 1440p@90-144+hz; 4k@60hz in SOME games, more at lower settings

General:
>READ PRODUCT REVIEWS to see if that cheap SSD/PSU or whatever is reliable
>Consider larger SSD-only for what you budget SSD+HDD combined. Add HDD later once needed
>NVMe aren't for faster OS boot. They're primarily for productivity/scratch disk/VMs
>Stop confusing any M.2 drive with NVMe. M.2 is a form factor
>mATX board + case is often cheaper
>1 SR DIMM is slower than 2 DIMMs
>>
>polaris card prices through the roof, no stock
>not even really worth trying to get into mining anymore
>NVIDIA doesn't support VESA adaptive sync

I'd prefer the budget to not go above $600 CAD but with shipping and taxes it probably will be a bit over. Would a lower watt gold power supply be better instead of a 500w bronze? I have a few old 1TB drives that I could throw in in case that makes a difference in power usage.

>>
>>60836626
Freesync isn't a meme. It works... but only with AMD Radeon graphics cards.
Since you have nvidia, you have to pay 3 times the price to get a G-sync monitor
Freesync doesn't work with nvidia anon. Freesync is open-source. G-sync was made by nvidia and royalties must be paid.

Hmm, Cryorig H7 is only 40euros here is it really that better than Wraith Spire?
>Yes. Just like asking if any car will break down. That's a guarantee. It's not a question of if, but when.
Well, i heard about some corsair watercooler leaks which made me anxious, so when we're talking about
when they will leak, will there be any hints so i can avoid it fucking up my system? what is the approximate
time it takes for AIO's to start leaking, do they have an expiration date?
I also don't care about noise levels which is why i only care about what cooler performs best and is the most
reliable in terms of build quality.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but current specs:
>i7 920 D0
>ASUS P6T Motherboard
>AMD 7970 3Gb
>3 x 2Gb RAM DDR3 1600MHz

I'm looking to move over to Linux as my desktop OS, but want to play games still. So, the best would be to play games through a virtual machine with GPU passthrough, but sadly ASUS fucked up my BIOS so it doesn't work.

What's the best way forward for me? Update CPU and Motherboard?

>>
I'm thinking about upgrading a friend's ancient desktop with an SSD, but he doesn't even use enough of the disk to warrant that. Does anyone know of a good SD card, or the like, to IDE adapter?
>>
>>60836713
I see. So where do I swing, Intel or AMD?
>>
>>60836800
AMD. The common recommendation is the new AMD Ryzen 5 1600 which has 6 cores, 12 threads, is priced to compete with the Intel Core i5 7600 and offers similar performance to the i7 7700k. As a bonus, the 1600 is unlocked as are ALL Ryzen chips so they can be overclocked. Just don't expect them to be overclocking pigs like Intel chips are. Current highest stable overclock on a 1600 is 3.9 or 4.0 GHz
The only intel chips worth anything are the budget Pentium G4560 and the Core i7 7700k since nothing beats it in single thread performance.
>>
Hi fags. I need a GPU. I want to spend around 300$. Should I buy a 8GB RX 580 or should I wait for the vega series? There will be any card around that price? And how much would I have to wait?
>>
>>60836866
>Should I buy a 8GB RX 580 or should I wait for the vega series?
The RX580 8GB is heavily recommended. Whether or not to wait for Vega is up to you
>There will be any card around that price?
Unknown. Minerfags have been snapping up all the AMD Radeon cards period. They're sold out everywhere.
>And how much would I have to wait?
For vega? Unknown. It's being announced next month in Las Vegas though.
For the RX cards to restock?
Again unknown. They sell out almost as soon as there's any stock. If you can find one for retail, snatch it.
>>
>>60836864
One thing is that AMD Ryzen doesn't have onboard GPU, so I would need two GPUs.
>>
>>60836896
I could buy a RX580 8GB Nitro+ at 280$. Is it worth it?
>>
>>60836917
why two? Just one good one will be fine.
>>60836972
Do it
>>
>>60836990

>>
>>60837010
no need. One will work for both. You can't run both OS at once.
>>
>>60837022
Well I guess when gaming I wouldn't need a second screen, though this video here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=37D2bRsthfI

>>

>>
>>60836726
maybe get an internal usb header and a usb stick?
>>
>>60837164
GPU passthrough is a bit rocky right now on Ryzen, would recommend waiting a bit if you can. Most beta BIOS' fixed IOMMU grouping which is good, but a lot of people are complaining about poor GPU usage in games. It will probably be fixed soon, just keep in mind some people are having issues while Intel just werks.
>>
>>60837678
Yeah, I'm a big AMD fan, but I wouldn't buy if I could get better performance from the other side.

Just costed up an Intel i7 6500, 16Gb RAM and an ASRock mobo for about £350. I've got other things going on so I can wait. Surprised that my i7 920 is almost half the speed of some of these processors. Impressive difference.

You could easily go under budget with a B350 Motherboard, a 1600 CPU and an Nvidia 1080 GPU. As for Ethernet depends how your home internet functions.

Windows 10 can be acquired through the usual methods.

Going to do the upgrade thing.

I already bought a Define R5 case because the HAF 912 is noisy with 5 HDDs in it.

Right now I'm thinking:

> AMD Ryzen 5 1600X
> ASUS PRIME X370-PRO
> 4x Corsair Vengeance LPX 8GB (1x8GB) 2666MHz

Just going to re-use PSU, SSDs, HDDs, RX 470 GPU and so on so those are the components I'm looking for some input on, specially the motherboard. Also, no Ryzen 5 1600 in stock in my country for some reason.

I strongly disagree and don't even try to tell me the Seasonic SS-500ES isn't trash.

If it's Seasonic and it says 80 Plus Gold then it's probably good. They are a pretty big brand that supplies a whole range of OEM units. Their "80 PLUS Bronze" offerings aren't that good.
>>
>>60838925
Cuz ur shit euro prices. Use ur brain.
The 650 RM, the one that's below it, is often $50-$65 in the US.

That is the old prime, though. The Platinum rated one is their new one and the Titanium the even newer one.

Retards shouldn't even be selling the G Series if they're going to sell it for more than the Prime.

Oh man, that's absolutely no good. Of course I don't have any problems with that case so far, it's still in the cardboard box. As I said, I'm still picking out a motherboard and CPU. I really don't like the idea that the front panel could short out.

>>60839335
>>60839355
32 GB is absolutely not overkill and anything less would be a downgrade.

If I need a x370 motherboard, on the other hand, is a valid question. It has two more SATA connectors than the B350, I don't like the idea of having to buy a add-in SATA card at some point. As for current storage, I use a 500 GB SSD in raid 1 with an old 750GB WD Black and 4 2TB HDDs in RAID5 in the current box and I plan to move / keep the storage.
>>

I also ask, because of reselling value, which will be way better with the GTX1080.

>>
>>60839776
The only reason to get a 1070 is because you already have a 1440p 60hz monitor and want to better ensure you stay above 60fps.

Nvidia knew it was a shitty value gaming GPU which is why they made it their best cryptocurrency mining card. Only miners and dumb cucks buy it mostly.
>>

>>
Are there still problems with Ryzen + Nvidia?
I want a new GPU for 1440p and Vega takes too god damn long. It will be released at Siggraph which is from like 30.07. to 01.08. and only reference cards will be released at first, which means consumers will have to wait until probably september/october for custom cards. That's just stupid, fuck AMD.
If issues are resolved i will buy a 1080 since prices have dropped. Waiting for Vega isn't worth it. No custom cards at launch, stupid prices, bad availability and no game benchmarks, fuck this.
>>
>>60840214

Performance-price and peformance-efficiency ratio wise, the GTX1080 is the best.
I don't need a monster card, but I don't need some card like GTX1070 for the price it is sold either, cause by the end of the year it will have turned into a middle class GPU card.
>>
>>60836362
Storage drives don't use up a whole lot of power. 500w is good for your system.
>>
>>60840309
I don't see the point of waiting for Vega either.
HBM2 is way too expensive, availability is shit, Vega is delayed again and again, custom cards with non-shit cooling will come even later than that and prices will probably be above Nvidia.
Fuck AMD GPUs at this point.

They basically failed to implement VT-d properly, so it only functionally supports VT-x. There is a beta BIOS with VT-d enabled, but it's not publicly available.

Even if you multitask alot you'll rarely go over 8gb regardless of what you're playing and we're recommending 16gb just for "future proofing" reasons considering we'll have ddr5 before we have 16gb of ram not being enough

Well considering you've already bought all these it doesn't matter now.
Considering you're needs and your budget rx 580 is the gpu you want. If it is sold out everywhere where you live then wait
i suppose, you really don't want to get stuck into g-sync if you don't have the budget for it. RX 580 will do 1080p 60fps on
max in AAA games and 1440p 60fps on max in some games and others might need to just turn off those placebo settings.

>I saw some interesting but older vids that suggest Ryzen + Nvidia doesn't work very well, is this still true?
Very few, just google and sort by date being last month and see if any of them affects you. Most i think are fixed by now.
>>

RX580 aren't available anywhere.
He could get 1060 6GB.
But yeah. Buying a 1080 on a budget planning on getting a 1440p 144hz monitor isn't the best idea considering those monitors cost $200-$400 more than their Freesync counterparts.

Almost always better off saving money on a GPU for your current monitor and upgrading GPU when you upgrade monitor and factoring in the cost of either into a total budget. Otherwise, by the time you get your monitor things could drastically change. If anything, Gsync monitors look like they're getting MORE expensive due to the lack of competition and how much suckers will pay for them.

For what purpose, i have OS and most important programms on SSD, rest on HDD. I don't need games on my SSD, most online games force you to wait for other players anyways and offline games already load fast enough.
>could've gotten 3tb for just 20$ more
Don't need, also have my older Hitachi for more storage and 2TB is enough for now.

Also told you i already bought this, i see no point in discussin the build, it was just meant as supplementary info.

>Considering you're needs and your budget rx 580 is the gpu you want
Lol no. Decent RX580 start at approx 290€ and are always sold out because of stupid miners. I also don't think much off the RX500 series.
RX500 is ridiculously inefficient and only performs +/-5% better than the 1060 6G. "Good" RX580 cards pull about as much power as a 1080 while delivering no where near it's performance.
G-Sync is stupid, true. I'd prefer Free Sync but since AMD doesn't offer anything that competes with the 1070 or 1080 getting an AMD is pointless imo.
I'd buy Vega, but Vega won't be released until early August and that's the reference cards only. Custom cards will probably hit markets in October. I don't know if i can wait until then, yet. If i can, i will, but if i can't i will need a new GPU.

>>60841654
This is also my concern. The problem is: AMD doesn't offer anything that competes with the 1070 or 1080 and Vega won't come until hell has frozen.
Also i don't need 1440p @144Hz, i'm fine with less Hz.

>>
>>60842032
Witcher 3 at 120 is impossible, 60 should be desirable
>>
>>60842029
If it's built properly, it should brace itself against the the case slots more than the PCIe slot. A proper backplate or a trim bar on the outer edge helps transfer that stability to the far end of the card.

Unfortunately there's a lot of cards floating around out there still that don't have that, and weigh on the slot.

Guys i have a few questions:

-according to official documentations, old intel processors (like mine) can handle memory (DDR3) at only 1333Mhz, yet i keep reading how some use 1600Mhz RAMs with them (in fact i have such ones myself). Is there a BIOS switch or something? if thats all it takes why isn't it listed in the documentation as such
-even on newer processors i see that 2400 DDR4 is max, yet i hear stuff about 3200? how does that work?
TL,DR: is the max RAM frequency stated on the processors description is the absolute limit, or can it be bypassed by mobo tricks and stuff?

-my main problem with my current PC is loading times during opening/closing programs, and such, so other than buying an SSD, would it worth getting a best-in-slot processor (i7 870) and 4extra gigs of RAM, or they wouldn't make much of a difference due to thee inherent limit of the CPU socket (the above memory speed) (wihtout an SSD).
>>
>>60842194
You are such a pussy. Why don't you ask your landlord for advice then?
>>
>>60842150
Thanks. I'll see if i can wait for Vega. Actually want to because fuck Nvidia, but if i can't i will have to buy a Nvidia GPU because AMD is a disappointment right now.
In case i get a new GPU it should be good for a few years, that's why i consider the 1070 and 1080, even though i don't really play AAA titles or maybe 1-2 selected ones in near future on maybe 1440p.
The cards i've looked at are KFA 1070 EX (Galax rebrand since Galax does not exist in EU) for 389€, Palit 1070 JetStream for 399€ or KFA 1080 EXOC for 489€ and Zotac 1080 AMP! for 499€.
Idk but seems like the most reasonable decision is to go with the KFA 1070 EX in case i can't wait for Vega, isn't it?
AMD really shouldn't have gone with HMB2..

>>
>>60842344
>cheap
What do you consider cheap? Regardless, look into either Ryzen or used Xeon's if Ryzen is too expensive.
>>
>>60842203

JEDEC spec says DDR3 should run at no less than 1333mhz at (iirc) 1.5v. One thing Intrel did is create XMP profiles that ram manufacturers can adhere to - essentially semi-officially supported ram overclocking. This is why you need to check your motherboard's qualified vendor list (QVL) to see what ram it supports at what timings, voltage, densities, channels etc etc. You will probably have to go into your bios (assuming you have a supported kit) and enable XMP to allow the ram to run at anything above 1333mhz

In a similar vein thats where the confusion with ryzen spawns from - fast kits are rated for XMP and naturally ryzen's memory controller is different and is not neccessarily going to work at those settings.

For your usage case an SSD would give the biggest gain as system memory is massively faster than any storage drive.

>intel is in a bad position in the CPU market, but just leave them some time and they'll come much ahead again =)
No they won't, their architecture is 11 years old so they can't do much improvement on it as they already have done a lot. Their next architecture is in 2020, so essentially all we'll get in the following years are slightly different / identical CPUs but at different prices.
And it's not like they will try to go with better prices than AMD. In fact even if they tried, AMD could just put lower prices yet again as their much better yields allow them to do so at ease. I mean fuck, even their 10nm CPUs will perform worse than Skylake ones at similar specs as shown by Intel's own graphs. Intel isn't really going anywhere, it's not like they can just shit out the best CPU on the market. And the mess that X299 and Kaby-Lake X is shows how incompetent they've become over time. All they can do is lower price at this point, but Kaby-Lake X shows that they have no will to do that (disable iGPU, crank base clock 100mhz up and yet cost $10 more)
People thinking that intel can just shit out some golden CPU and be back on track again are foolish: they can't.

Guys I need some help.

Just replaced my 7 years old i5 with pic related.

MB, CPU and RAM are new but the case and PSU are from my old build.

The issue is the system reboots by itself after playing for about 20 minutes. I had the same issue with my previous build, that's why I ended up buying the new stuff.

I don't think it's related to GPU temps, I had GPU-Z and Open Hardware Monitor to log temps and they maxed at 70ºC

The main suspect now is the PSU, it's 7 years old and I don't know how you're supposed to stress test a PSU to see if it's still ok.
>>
>>60843990

Random reboots on non overclocked hardware is nearly always the fault of the psu.

>7 years old and I don't know how you're supposed to stress test a PSU to see if it's still ok.

Run either prime95 or Intel burn test (on high) at the same time as furmark. If that doesn't bring your psu down nothing will. That said I wouldn't want to explicitly stress test an aging psu - ESPECIALLY - if it wasn't a top of the line psu when new.

Over current protection is vital when testing like this and a shanghai street special can - and will - nuke your shit.

>The question is, are 80 plus gold or higher worth it?

Yes and no. PSU effeciency is simply a matter how how much juice it pulls from the wall to how much it supplies to your system (as naturally it will never be 1:1). That said for a unit to get rated to these higher standards it - almost by definition - needs some quality components that can handle the load.

My advice? Check out jonnyguru for anything psu related as NOBODY - but nobody - else does better testing than he does.

Still a good 650w unit even after 7 years on a system that pulls probably 400w~ shouldn't be a problem but then agai nI don't know if you've ran that psu right to the limit for 7 years straight or not.

Furmark is effectively a gpu power virus, so it made your 380 pull probably over 200w which in of itself shouldn't pull your psu down unless prime95 is running as well (which adds another 100-150w for your cpu getting molested by it). Even still that is only 400w tops all told.

my computer is 6+ years old and still going strong, but i think its time to upgrade.

i'm hoping i can salvage my psu (750w), which i originally bought more powerful than i needed in the hopes of using it for future upgrades. its 6 years old but ive never had a single problem with it, and it makes no noise or anything. it could use a cleaning but im hoping it will be fine for a new build.

i have 8gb ddr3 RAM that is 5 years old that i would like to reuse as well.

i also have this old piece of shit case that i would like to reuse, but i can buy a new one if the new components wont fit in it.

if i can reuse those parts, this would run me about $740. obviously more if i have to get a new case/psu/ram. is this a strong build that would last me another 5+ years? i would rather spend money for a quality build that will let me play games on high settings for a while rather than having to upgrade every 2 years.

i wont be able to drop the money on this for another 2-3 months. are there any other components coming out sometime soon that would be smart to wait for?

>>
>>60845971

Modern cpus are DDR4 only (lol DDR3L) which means your old ram won't work.
>>
>>60845971
DDR3 ram is dead. You'll need DDR4.
And no one recommends the Intel i5 anymore. You want an AMD Ryzen 5, usually a 1500X or 1600 are recommended. The $190 1500X has 4 cores and 8 threads while the $220 1600 has 6 cores and 12 threads. They're all unlocked an overclockable, and the 1500X, 1600, and 1700 (an 8 core, 16 thread version. About $300) all come with a decent cooler known as the Wraith Spire, which can handle a moderate overclock.
And yes, you have to buy DDR4. Ryzen requires it, and Ryzen LOVES fast ram so don't skimp and get cheap slow ram.

Maybe - AM4 has best part of 50% pins unsused but 64pcie lanes and quad channel ram would probably demands more than that. Most likely AM4 would either increase core and pcie count before memory lanes.

Imagine each CCX being 6 cores on zen+

>6c/12 being the minimum AMD offered without igpu.
>>
>>60846613
I imagine just giving 1 die a memory channel each.

I broke part of a fan blade off on my GPU while cleaning it, being a little too forceful That plastic is thinner than I thought. What do?

>>
>>60847085
See if it impacts cooling. If you have the broken part and some superglue, try to put it back together, set it overnight, and see if it works. Dont use too much glue that it dribbles down other parts of the blade or GPU
>>
>>60847390

If superglue doesn't hold 2-part epoxy might. Given the relative forces involved if epoxy doesn't work it can't be glued back together.

Good AMD video cards? No budget really as long as it isn't too ridiculous
>>
>>60847477

Depends on uisage case. The godmachine is 290x but that is an old card almost entirely replaced by the 580. Fury line on discount is still viciously competitive but vega is only a few months away and that hinders things if you are YOLO for a high refresh rate 1440p screen or going "always bet on the curry" 4K screen.
>>
>>60847518
I am really thirsty for 1080p 144Hz goodness being able to run most games on ultra
>>
>>60847617

That is a tall order assuming 1) your cpu can feed it and 2) the game can scale that high. A highly clocked 580 could do it but the likes of a 1070 is a better option.

That said (as previously said) some games simply WON'T hit such fps for a multitude of reasons - some hit engine stalls and others run into physics breaking bugs at such fps.

>>
>>60847854

>Also what the hell is Strix and why do I feel like I should avoid it?

Ever since fat kepler/hawaii asus has a rep of slapping Nvidia coolers on AMD chips which has led to less than stellar cooling performance. Honestly if a 1080ti is on your shortlist given the amount of money involvced waiting a month or two to see what Vega is is a sensible move. If you were considering chips in a perofrmance tier (or two) down then the descision is easier.
>>
>>60847829
Sell it and get a 1070, 480 is not strong enough for 144fps in most games (unless you are talking about CSGO, Dota 2 and esports titles since they are old and run on toasters). 480s and 580s are really overpriced right now so selling one to get an upgrade is a good idea.

threadraper probably won't be structured quite like R7, for the reason that each Zeppelin die will have higher baseline power consumption from 1:1 clocked IF crossbars and actually enabled GMI links.

Will a smaller percentage of power at nominal TDP budgeted toward the cores themselves, there's not as much wiggle room for clock variants on the painful end of the V/freq curve.

This just means buying 12c-16c variants sold at 3.3 GHz or whatever that can OC to 3.9-4.1 GHz but at HOUSEFIRE power consumption levels.
