/sqt/ because old one is almost kill

You know the drill:
-post your small tech support questions HERE, don't create a thread for them
-don't just bump the thread, most people look for posts without replies
-take at least 10 seconds checking your problem with a search engine

Hello,

I fell for the Seagate meme and just lost my 1tb external hard drive (shit isn't mounting anymore).

Any recommendations for a new USB storage device?

Install gentoo wiki suggests to just buy a regular hard drive and use an adapter case for it, is that ok?

Yesterday my PC froze and then I turned it off, after that my PC won't boot, not even get to the Asus screen, I get zero video output, and CPU_LED is solid red on the motherboard.

I tried removing ram, removing my GPU and removing my CPU and putting it back on. I have no idea what to do anymore. I have an AMD FX 8350 and an Asus m5a99x Evo r2.0 motherboard.

I'm starting to run out of options, I tried clearing CMOS, checking the 24 pin cable and the CPU power cable, checked to see whether there were any bent pins. Nothing worked.

Two questions:
I have a couple (actually a few thousand) texture files that are, supposedly, .tif files but their headers don't match up to any common image file format. Is there any way I could figure out what they are?

Is there any program that extracts data from a file following a certain pattern (e.g. a bunch of JPG images put together, uncompressed in an archive format)?

HDD SMART question

My HDD sometimes doesn't start or starts with clicks on my pc. I do think this is because of my pci psu or something because it never does that with a HDD box.

Somehow it got its spin-up retry count to 1, so bios and os triggers many alarms as it doesn't pass SMART self check. But it does pass short and long self tests.

Is there a way to reset the spin-up retry count? Is it got triggered because of my broken pc or the hdd is dying?

Yes, buy toshiba and an enclosure, as it is the only non-US brand and thier HDDs are pretty good.

If you just root by an exploit, app or something, nothing will change.

But if you root by unlocking your bootloader, it will factory reset the device.

If your root method resets your phone, some apps are backup-able by "adb backup" command.

Ask about IPS monitors on /r/monitors. A few regulars are pretty knowledgeable.

You sort of get what you pay for in monitors.

I am going to build a new RAID array inside my Windows PC. Thinking of going RAID5, maybe RAID10.

Is onboard RAID shit for RAID5?
Should I invest in a RAID card? What's a good model to look for? New or used.
My mobo only has 2x SATA 6Gb/s ports, so any other RAID has to go through the 3Gb/s SATA ports.
If I use 8TB WD Reds, will I notice a difference?

Hardware RAID is generally not recommended. It is doubtful that you'll see any sort of difference between 3 Gbps and 6 Gbps ports with hard drives.

Learn to build a pc on your own. It's not adult legos as some people would claim, but it's a lot easier than you would think. The really hard parts are troubleshooting and choosing the parts. And resisting the urge to upgrade right after you build.

>time
Buy from a boutique builder. Ask around for a good one. Just as a note, sometimes, not often but sometimes, even Best Buy has a gaming computer that is actually worth a damn. Look around for a pc that costs $100-$250 more than its processor and video card combined. I would consider that to be good value. Even better if it has an SSD.

As gaming PCs go it's not too bad. You could get something cheaper if you build it yourself but there are definitely worse prebuilts to choose from.

Yeah your power supply probably can't handle it. A completely new build would be nice but upgrading your pc isn't impossible. Post specs of current PC.

Yeah, 6700+1060 6gb will do most gaming just fine.

Am in a loop where I keep thinking about switching to Arch Linux and then chicken out for fear of some bug or package breakage making my system unusable or deleting my rare Pepes. the only things I like about Archer on the documentation and the Aur. I love old video games end they are makes it very easy to track down source ports games like RollerCoaster Tycoon and XCOM. I know about men jarrow but they have a long history of being incompetent and I don't want to use Ubuntu for entirely artistic reasons. I've been trying Debian for its stability but it's harder than expected to get meh games runing.

if Arch brakes, how bad should I expect it to get? am I just worrying too much?

Do PSUs lose power over time? My PC was getting randomly shutdown when under load. Then it started turning off even when light use ie browsing the web. Now it won't even boot, but some fans are still spinning, LEDs are on, Evo 212 spinning, but the 970s fans aren't spinning despite the lights on it being on. Switching GPU doesn't change a thing, fans of my old 6850 are also not spinning, PC is not booting. I guess the 650HX is done for, only 4 years of constant use, sounds shitty to me. I own a toshiba satellite u845w-s400, which is one of those thin models that doesn't have a disk drive. It's also too thin to have a proper ethernet port, what it has instead is this weird hinge opening. Is there someplace I can better find answers to this situation or should I just get a ethernet->usb adapter?

Can anyone make a quick rundown on password managers? Why should I use one? How do they work? What are the best?

I have script blockers and ad blockers shit installed, so I figure maybe it's a script that's malicious and why I didn't see anything.

If I save the page as an html page with the complete setting so images and shit get saved, would that also save any malware and would i get myself infected if I open up the html file if the malware was intially indeed present on the page and my adblockers and script blocker extentions just intially blocked it, but wouldn;t if I opened it up if it was saved locally?

You should use one because you'll never remember good passwords otherwise, so you'll make shit ones or reuse them between sites, which is far worse than any security risk from having a password manager. I am looking to put together a cheap NAS with an old PC. The only thing I have is a Dell Optiplex 520, and it looks like it only has a 108watt PSU. And a 1x PCE-e.

This wont work well will it? Like I want to put in like 6x HDs in there, and a cheap raid card.
>>

unless its something highly illegal like CP or NSA's private porn collection then I dont see why it would be impossible, did you shared the files with your friend by entering his email or setting it public?
>>
>>60807261
1 HDD is supposed to use 6 Watts at peak usage, 5W at idle, 1W at standby/sleep
>>
>>60807327
I shared it directly with his email, I put all the files in a folder on Google drive. Maybe it's because I put the tools for installing it instead of just the files, he said the keygen didn't work so he couldn't unlock the program

How do I browse a device's files on Win7?
I can't install an USB device, probably because it's kinda old, I've installed the sriver from the disc and all the related software a dozen times already even with WinXP compatibility settings but didn't work, when I plug the device it fails to install the driver.
I want to see what files are on the device itself, what should I do?

Hi, I haven't been into PC's for a long time, but I'm wanting to put together a rig for me, and my friend.

I do have some criteria I'd like to meet, and I'm trying to keep it on the cheap side.

>DDR3 compatible for up to 16gigs
>1080 resolution output
>good e-nuff CPU to run modern games (Rainbow Six Siege, modded Skyrim, World of Warcraft, as examples)
>good e-nuff video card to support dual monitor (Do they still run 2 video cards?)

And ideally, I'd like to buy Tower, MOBO, CPU, power supply, fans and HD with OS already installed, but part out the video card and RAM myself, and I wouldn't mind keeping them around $300 a piece, any suggestions?

Pretty much any GPU can support dual monitors, and 1080p gaming at 60 FPS is pretty easy to achieve too, even with your budget. With a budget and requirements like that your best option would most likely to get a complete used system locally. Check around and see what is available. Of course price varies a lot by area and by seller, but here's what I'd look out for:

CPU: i5-2400/FX-6300
GPU: R9 280/GTX 770
RAM: DDR3 is pretty expensive right now, so you might have to go with a mobo with 4 RAM slots and just use four 2GB DIMMs @ 1333 MHz for a total of 8 GB

If at all possible I would get a small (60 GB will do) SSD for the OS and an HDD for everything else. Save on the OS by using a trial version of Windows 10, or just crack it if the text bothers you.
>>
>>60808498
Thanks for the input. After some searching, I found this gem on Craigslist, and he's got two just like it I think I'll try and pick up.

https://topeka.craigslist.org/sys/6141103921.html

It doesn't list what GPU he's using, but it does show HDMI, DVI, and VGA ports from it, so I might even be able to run that and have it do everything I need it to.

If you could look at that, and point me in the direction of some key upgrades to get it's performance up to par, I'd appreciate it.

I would more than likely get an external HD for it to hold all the games.

good simple c++ library for downloading (or just storing in a variable) plain text shit (txt, json, even html...) from the Internet?
>>
>>60808545
You'd almost certainly have to switch the GPU out if you intend to use it for gaming. It's probably a super low power OEM card or something. You might also have to swap out the PSU especially if you go for a higher power draw card. If it's a decent 300W PSU or better though, you might be able to get something like a GTX 1050 new without having to swap the GPU and while staying in budget.

RAM is another concern. The motherboard most likely only has 2 RAM slots, with probably a single 4 GB stick in there. It could also have 2*2 GB sticks, which would of course have to be replaced.

While it doesn't explicitly mention the CPU generation either, it might be a i5-2500, which would serve you well enough, considering the price.

Might be a good starting point. I think I've also seen an influx in i7-2600 machines recently for pretty cheap. Those extra threads wouldn't hurt.

um, i'm using vlc to stream an online episode, while boosting the volume. the boosted volume at 124% seems to only work when the vlc window has the focus, which sucks while multitasking. movie files problem

I have a smart tv which doesnt recognize the sound part of .mkv files (which is used for all my movies)

I have also a ps4, which can recognize the sound part of .mkv files but the files are about 8gb, so they dont fit on a FAT32 usb port (other systems are not supported by the ps4)

what is better: fastest and most comfortable solution, and which one would you recommend, I have no idea about good movie softwares

A) Format the sound part of the mkv files and watch it via TV
B) Split the movies easily and watch it on ps4
