I need a simple and easy to use Linux distro for my father. He has no experience with Linux so we are talking really simple.

My monitor only supports max 1360x768, on windows I used to downsample with http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=404125 which worked great but I have no clue how to do the equivalent on linux, the xrandr scale thing looks awful and the

Connect to the monitor and use the commands:

xrandr
Note the available outputs, i.e. HDMI1 if it's a TV. You'll use them below.
xrandr --output $NEW_MONITOR --mode $RESOLUTION --right-of $CURRENT_MONITOR

Where --right-of might rather be --left-of if you want.

First of all, if you install a wallpaper setter, a file manager, a notifaction daemon and similar, you get a desktop environment.

Secondly, your problem has nothing to do with Xresources. Openbox runs xsetroot as part of its openbox-autostart file. See this[0].
Just uncomment that if you don't want it to change your root window color (desktop color).

Wrong. There is the LGPL.
>>

I can't go into too much detail as this is only supposed to be a 15 minute talk for people who mostly use spreadsheets or Photoshop in their studies. I'm one of three engineering students in a course with 20 people. I was going to address the fact that not all free licenses are viral and that you can, in fact, monetize free software.
By monopoly I mean that with proprietary software, you force other devs to reverse-engineer your software or to write it from scratch if they want to compete with you, instead of allowing them to reuse as much of your code as they like.

I personally use Hydrus now, but it also serves as collection manager / viewer.

Since you mentioned "archive" I figure you'd probably better use one of the many Python (more mature than Go overall) phash tools or libs that you can find on github and elsewhere?

You'll kinda have to supply parameters and script some anyhow so the tool does what you want it to do, so either should work.

I see that you mention being forced to use some proprietary simulation software. That's an issue that I personally find grave and think we should raise awareness on . More so in education - there's something wrong about an education system that demands students to give up their freedom or imposes additional challenges on them if they refuse. I don't think you should go on a minute-long rant but I'd ask you to make sure that the implications of imposing that choice on other people are apparent.

In general, slide 10 does a good job of explaining why free software matters in practical terms, which helps deliver the point about imposing it on others, but I think it could be improved:

- Nice practical reasons but not enough ethical reasons: proprietary software isn't just immediately bad for you, it also demands that you be bad to others by forbidding you from sharing with them.
- I like how you put developers and users in the same bag, but you address developers so subtly that it might give the impression that they belong mostly on the "publisher" side. Maybe you should emphasise a bit more how FS is good for developers, lest someone get the idea that it's a conflict between users and developers.

>I don't think you should go on a minute-long rant but I'd ask you to make sure that the implications of imposing that choice on other people are apparent.
100% agree that proprietary software should be banned from places of education except as a way to learn reverse-engineering but I think for this talk it'll be important to focus on free software as a whole first. Cutting it pretty close time-wise without opening that particular can of worms.
> it also demands that you be bad to others by forbidding you from sharing with them.
Good point, adding that.
>Maybe you should emphasise a bit more how FS is good for developers
Like being able to prevent your code you made with good intentions being used in proprietary software to make some dickbag money? Good point, but there will not be any devs in the audience, thus I think the point is lost on them. Maybe I'll add it as a side note at the end when I mention that all the software I write privately is published under a free licence.

>>
>>60662448
>Like being able to prevent your code you made with good intentions being used in proprietary software to make some dickbag money?
Well, that, but I was rather thinking of what you mention in points 1 and 2: using existing software as a basis, being able to fix and improve software - just the ways in which the community-style development that FS encourages makes things easier and better for devs. Simply making sure that your audience doesn't miss those two points and assumes that the left side is users and maybe small-time hobbyist devs, and the right side is publishers and "serious" devs. Your later point about the software you write yourself should help get the idea across, yes.

>>60662638
Yeah, like that.

What you said about your free software not being made proprietary is copyleft. There is free software that isn't copyleft - and the whole thing's another can of worms that you probably don't want to spend your 20 minutes on.
>>
>>60662745
>There is free software that isn't copyleft - and the whole thing's another can of worms that you probably don't want to spend your 20 minutes on.
I am still debating whether I should mention copyleft at all, and if so, when. Think I'll just leave that for later if anyone asks what's stopping devs from taking my source (which they can see because of freedom 1) and incorporating it in proprietary software. I doubt it'll come up.

Free software is any software that guarantees the user the four essential software freedoms:
> 0. Run the program as you wish.
> 1. Study the source code and change it so it does what you wish.
> 2. Redistribute exact copies of the program.
> 3. Distribute your modified version of the program.
Some people decided that they wanted to restrict the user; but being able to study and modify the "open source" code is not enough! This is directly hurting the cause of the free software movement because it takes away the sociological "freedom" aspect of free software and turns it into a technological one.

>no tearing/stuttering without a compositor? hard to believe.

i don't get it as well

so far the only program that has tearing is firefox, for some reason... the rest of the stuff, like moving windows around, or using any other browser or program is synced perfectly to monitor's refresh rate, as if it's some driver-level stuff

funnily enough, turning the xfce compositor on results in very obvious and horrible tearing everywhere, if i replace it with compton, running in glx or hybrid mode, the tearing is gone again, but everything except for cursor movement gets pretty large input lag.
>>
>>60664247
Those who can't into programming have free choice among those that are programming literate to do the job for them. Like, if you're inept at cooking, you can always go out and pay someone to cook for you. You have to trust him not to poison you. That doesn't mean you aren't free to learn the recipe, modify it and spread both the original recipe and your modified version.

I chose xsel, and it lets me paste with ctrl+v as well. Just have to specify xsel -d, or alias xsel to that.

Er will drei Geschenke.

Sie wissen dann schon, was kommt.

Here:
Allow me to interrupt for a moment. Since you mentioned using Services as a Software Substitute (or SaaSS), I want to stress that using this SaaSS is on the same level of injustice as using nonfree software. First of all, let me explain what nonfree software is: it is all software which is not free. When we say "free", we are talking about free as in freedom, not free as in free beer (for that we would say gratis). Free software is that software which grants its users the four essential freedoms: 0. To run the program for any purpose the user may wish. 1. To study the program's source code and change it to make the program do what the user wishes to do. 2. To redistribute exact copies of the program to help your neighbor. 3. To improve the program and to distribute the improved versions to anyone. Nonfree software was the first way for companies to take control of people's computing, now SaaSS does the same thing by taking away the user's direct control over his computing and doing it on some other computer (the server). SaaSS doesn’t mean the programs on the server are nonfree (though they often are). Rather, using SaaSS causes the same injustices as using a nonfree program. Take the example of a SaaSS translation service: The user sends text to the server, and the server translates it (from English to Spanish, say) and sends the translation back to the user. Now the job of translating is under the control of the server operator rather than the user. The user cannot rely on the translation being correct because it is out of his control what the translator will output for a given input. It also requires entrusting all the pertinent data to the server operator who, if he does not intend to do anything immoral with your data himself, might elect or be forced to give it to someone else who WILL use it for nefarious purposes. Therefore, I strongly advise you to take control over your computing back into your own hands by stopping your usage of SaaSS.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

prior to mpd i used whatever came with the distro/de, like rhythmbox or that kde player, and all of them, without exceptions, had either weird lockups after playing a couple songs, or random stutters.

mpd is going without a single hiccup so far

Then what editor would you suggest?
>>
>>60667072
Microsoft Notepad Pajeet Edition.
>>
>>60666776
It's an editor that has been improved SINCE the 90s.

You could say that modern software may have designed a few things differently - particularly with the ability to hook things into vim better for "code insight" type of functionality and such.

But a really impressive lot of features and usability details have been done since the 90s.

It remains one of the very best editors hands down and very effective to work with in most cases. No, your more colorful editor is really not better at this point.

ok to help you out and save us both some time i'll try to break it down4u

>reset infinality
if you go here https://github.com/bohoomil/fontconfig-ultimate you can read
>Further customization and misc options
where you see fc-presets command, it lists Reset as option

then you bye bye infinality with something like this
pacman -S freetype2 fontconfig cairo

then you have a look at the <infinality-bundle and ibfonts-meta-base> link which lists the fontconfig conf files infinality used which are still available in bohoomil's github. so you clone or download his stuff and put them in your ~/.config/ dir and boom good font rendering. that's basically it just copy bohomils .confs as explained in comment and his own readmes. if you do you might profit even more if you change hintslight to hintmedium and lcddefault to lcdlight in 10-base-rendering.conf, also with those settings (as was with the bundle as well) noto makes fonts crappy because its not metricly compatible but the confs prefer it so delet it and use liberation instead

hope this helps

It's a theme with pretty good properties:
http://ethanschoonover.com/solarized#features

But I guess it'd be popular already just 'cause pastel colors, wide availability and clear separation of elements.

Guys I've spent all weekend trying to triple boot my system. Currently have w10 and Ubuntu. Wanna go more advanced and add Void Linux. Having serious difficulties booting from USB.

usb is formatted to fat32
used unetbootin to install the .iso image
sandisknigga is selected as the top boot in the BIOS
tried fucking with grub, the shit says *shitty flat nasaly nerd voice* caaant find the efi fiiillee paaathhh every time I set root=(hd0,msdos1) which should be the usb right and then say chainloader +1

what the fuck else do I 二ーっド to do? It's not finding it and just going to grub screen.. Unetbootin was an option there at one point and now that's even gone.
>>
>>60667247
> EVERYDAY,in EVERY instance of vim.
By the same logic all I might maybe need in a kitchen is one trash bin.

But I do use more vim specific features quite a few times, yes.
>>
>>60667452
I have no experience with Void, but it should already work when you tell your BIOS to boot it.
That it failover'd to the grub on your drive is indicative that it probably couldn't find a bootable thing on the USB stick.

Maybe you didn't deploy Void Linux to USB quite right. (Maybe you could try to UEFI boot it?)
>>
>>60667661
It should, shouldn't it? Idk, I had the same issue trying with Slackware earlier, it seemed easier and more supported, but couldn't get that going either. Something is fucked up I'm just at a loss.
(as an aside -- how does finding street signs prove that I'm human, damnit?)

Yes, it should at least boot from BIOS.

Maybe try with another tool than unetbootin if not just a raw dump like "dd if=/path/to/iso of=/dev/your_usbstick"

Hello, I recently configured i3-gaps, compton, vim and some stuff in urxvt. How do I get to that next level of comfiness?

Is there a benefit in using zsh for my shell over bash?

Also what the fuck is going on in the 'marginal space' between my monitors? I have a portrait and landscape. Pic related.

KDE Plasma is the same on every distribution, you utter retard. Switching to a different distribution won't automagically make the software have additonal features.
Kill yourself, idiot. Then kill yourself again because one death isn't enough to get rid of all of your idiocy.
