How bad is tn screen on x60/x61. Should i go for ips if it costs 50% more?
>>
Considering a T540p. The sticky pastebin link says
>takes a 15.5" 3K IPS display
How difficult is it to swap in a new higher resolution screen?

Is it basically following the screen replacement instructions in the official maintenance manual? Or are there extra complications due to this being an upgrade rather than a straight replacement?

I mean the board has decent speed so getting the timing right would be annoying. If it dies before the new thread can be made then you can't post a link to the new one and everyone is gonna have to go back to the catalog and search for it which is annoying.
>>
>>60547703
If the T540p you buy has a shitty 768 resolution display, you actually need a new top lid and bezel. The FHD/3K are swap ins between each other (plus cable change but that's for literally any resolution swap).

Thanks for the reply.
I'm looking at a 1080p machine, so if I understand you correctly, I only need a 3K screen & a new video cable as far as parts go.

In the maintenance manual, there's a bunch of scaremongering about running PanelReplacementUtility.exe or the replacement won't work.
What's the deal with that? Does this mean I have to keep Windows on there until after the screen swap, just to run the exe?

I'm about to start to study CS engineering in Uni and I'm getting a thinkpad t420 for cheap(150$). What upgrades from the following would you recommend to a student like me---
1)ssd
2)ram(4gb present at the time of buying)
3)CPU(from i5 2520m to i7/i5 quadcore like i7 2670qm)
Do u think that CPU upgrade is necessary at all.I just want to play dark souls 3.Also I don't have a desktop computer?
4)battery-9 cell

X220 vs t420, which one wins? Does CPU upgradation in t420 gives it an edge over x220, considering a person owning x220 is screwed if his CPU fails while someone owning t420 can just replace it?

>I'm about to start to study CS engineering
>I just want to play dark souls 3
You're hilarious.
Also, how do you think a AAA title from last year will fly on a 6yo iGPU?

Trips gets you an attempt at a serious answer.
If you actually plan on using this to study, SSD & 8GB RAM are relatively cheap & potentially comfy upgrades, but together will cost almost as much as the whole laptop. Just try it out before committing to that.
I doubt the CPU upgrade will be worth your while/shekels.

hey guys, this is a purchasing advice request

first off, im currently using a t61 but something seems to be wrong with it (possibly just age as ive had it about 7 years) as it gets very hot quickly, the fan is very loud and programs run very slowly

so im thinking of getting an upgrade

-my budget is around £300
-location is UK (is that specific enough/what that question means?)
-size (does that mean screen?): i think my t61 is 14" and that seems fine
-performance: i just tend to be browsing the internet mostly so id like it to be able to handle potentially many tabs at once including ones playing video

thanks for any help guys

Okay, I'm a complete noob to buying laptops. I have a budget of around $400 so I'm looking for some advice. The T420, X230 and Thinkpad X 11.6 seem like good deals for the price, or could I get something with a bit more muscle around the same price?

I mostly want something with plenty of space on the hard drive that also can play some decently demanding games like Payday 2.
>>
>>60550346
No it's a shitty idea unless you never overclock.

It's been done though, and I run a 3840QM which is just a step down and I run it just fine at the same heat the XM would generate. There's just no point in spending extra on the XM.

This may sound like something super stupid;

I'm thinking about replacing the speaker mesh on my t430 with copper cloth, mostly for ""aesthetics""

However, it should be pretty easy to solder a wire to the copper mesh/fabric and run these wires to the wifi, acting as an additional antenna and hopefully extending wifi range a bit.

I've done quite a few homemade antennas before, but I've never bothered to read up on the particulars of antenna design. I'm thinking some secondary copper mesh antennas could cause unwanted interference effects of some sort> Is this the case, or will I see a decent net gain by having 2 additional mesh antennas?

Yes I will probably just try it out anyway and see what happens.

>>60552039
which "other" laptops?

the plastic consumer garbage you see out front in best buy and compared to Lenovo Ideapads? yes, ThinkPads are much better than those

ThinkPads are Lenovo's enterprise/business line of laptops and brand new hold a premium price ($1000-2500+, depending on model, specs, etc.)

other manufacturers also have their own enterprise line of laptops which are also miles ahead of their cheap consumer laptops, such as HP Elitebooks and Dell Latitudes/Precisions

really those are pretty much the same when it comes to quality, it depends what specific features one brand has that the other might not and what kind of good deals you can find

ThinkPads are just a meme carried on from the old days when they were owned by IBM

Thrift/charity/whatever stores, your local garage sale, ask an enterprise/business if you can buy one off them and have it not collecting dust in the storage room.
The advantage of those scenarios is that 95% of the times you get to test your product before you purchase it.

If you can even consider online shopping, then eBay or a local selling site (for example MercadoLibre in Mexico) will do, just have a bit of common sense and don't expect to get a P71 for just 5 freedombucks.
>>
>>60554876
If you shop around, you can find ones that are "used"; in the sense they've been sitting in a shelf in an office for years without being deployed, then bought in bulk by the resaler.
The one I just bought was like this. Cosmetic wear and tear on the lid, but otherwise untouched.

Hey /tpg/, I bought a used IBM ThinkPad R51 2888WTA for $50 bucks today, it's a little scratched up but it boots and runs perfectly fine. It runs Windows XP Professional but it says the OS isn't verified by Windows.

The problem I'm having is the previous owner didn't wipe his hard drive completely, and due to my fear of there being hidden kiddie porn on it, I'm poised to factory reset it. Ordering a new hard drive is my last resort.

I can't navigate to the factory default restore. I read multiple articles on how to do it and followed the instructions but the option can't be found. I tried BIOS and Systems Management - nothing.

As soon as I bought it I disabled the WiFi antenna in case of hidden scripts or viruses, then took it home.

Any tips? Should I just get a new hard drive and bathe the old one in acid?

As an added note, this is my first thinkpad.

I've made the same with a T400, but I've always unlocked the BIOS before flashing, so I had a clean backup.
Since coreboot or libreboot does not uttilise the BIOS pss, I think flashing core/libre makes it disabled untill you flash the factory BIOS back for some reason.

>>
>>60563339
You have space for three strage devices.
1 in the mSATA slot
1 in the HDD bay
1 in the Optical bay, with a caddy

Just choose what you want to do. Use an mSATA, be limited to SATA II speeds and keep both the optical drive and HDD, or use two HDDs and an SSD, or whatever.

I would just like to interject for one moment. What you're proclaiming to be Linux, is really, GNU/Linux, or as I just the other day began to call it, GNU + Linux. Linux isn't an OS by itself, but actually another free component of a fully working GNU system fashioned into something practical by the GNU core libraries, shell tools and essential system components comprising a full OS .

Many computer owners use a subspecies of the original system everyday, without knowing it. Through a strange happenstance, the edition of GNU installed now is often called "Linux", and many of its owners have no knowledge that it is in actuality the GNU system, created by GNU developers.

There is in fact a Linux, and this population do have it installed, but it is but a part of the system they use. Linux is the core: the program in the system that gives out the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The core is an essential part of an OS, but cannot work on its own; it will work only in the shadow of a whole OS. Linux is normally installed in combination with the GNU OS: the whole system is in actuality GNU with the addition of Linux, or GNU/Linux. Every one of the alleged "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>60566219

>some autists said it would bottle neck

The drive would bottleneck the computer or the computer would bottleneck the drive? I'm assuming the former. A HDD bottlenecks anything due to the nature of it. If you don't have the cash, either just wait, or use a small capacity mSATA SSD as a boot drive and any HDD in the SATA bay for storage. While the X220's mSATA slot will operate at SATA 2 speeds, it'll still be way, way more responsive than the HDD.

How'd I do? Planning to put Trisquel and Libreboot on it.

My t61p is still chugging along. Upgraded to 8gb memory, SSD, and it still kicks a little ass.

Fuck kingston, sandisk is pretty okay. Are you looking for msata or 2.5"? SK Hynix makes a really good 2.5" if you don't want to pay for a Samsung.
>>
would an X230 be fine now?
how about with an SSD?

Anyone using their thinkpads to run VMs?
I'm looking to get x220 to use it to run WinXP/Win7 VM on Manjaro Guest
Is Core i5 2520M + 4 GB RAM enough to run VM?
>>
>>60576063
Sure, I'm running a vm with T61 (3GB ram)
>>
>>60575979
Do you use DVDs/CDs often?
If yes, buy external and caddy.
If not, just caddy.

Honestly, I would trade my DVD Drive for a caddy if I was given the chance; I have another one lying around and I could maybe plug it into a USB port, anyways...
>>
>>60576107
What's the host and guest?
>>
>>60576149
I test different distro frequently.
And I usually burned the ISO to DVD and boot from it.
Will burning the ISO to USB flash drive, provide better performance from internal optic drive?
>>
Can i buy the B125HAN02.2 panel for my X260?
>>
>>60576063
yes but you'll want more than 4gb ram

>>60576767
yes flash drives are faster than cd's, and easier to burn to and rewrite and more convenient
>>
>>60577346
>more than 4gb ram
And what I don't have?
Are there ways to minimize RAM usage by VM?
>>
>>60577380
alocate less ram to the VM, performance will be dogshit though once you drop below the 1gb mark depending on what your doing.
>>
>>60571215
It would fit, but there's no EC patches to make it work correctly.
Also why the fuck would you put inferior *30 keyboard in a *20?

Did I do good /g/?
Does the P51 come with the M2 caddy? I tried looking for it on their forums, but couldn't find anything.

Is there a difference between ibm thinkpad x200 and thinkpad x200 or is it a same thing?
>>

same thing
>>
>>60576717
Lubuntu and Linux mint. On my experience, windows 7 should run fine with 1gb ram, but you might not be able to run butter smoothly nor the video playback is very laggy. I personally would reconsider using any of those weird arch alternatives such as manjaro or antergos due to their still quite bloated nature even if it's basically an arch distro.

Nevertheless, you should be good think. Don't except too much from it tho.
>>
>>60571986
I think I would go for a 2,5" becuase I only have 320gb of 5200rpm and have a few external hard drive if I need more space. It's just an option I wanted to analyze
>>
>>60578926
What about running slimmed down versions like MicroXP?

>>
>>60578964
I have thought of that as my go-to eroge OS. Even thought I already have one win7 32bit on my T60 for ultimate 4:3 eroge.
Tbh, this is my "babbys first" virtualization" which is why I went this retarded config of two pretty much same distros with different DE.

I'm jealous (not in a malicious way. I mean to say that the laptop you ordered is one that I find to be very desirable, and wish that I could buy one as well). Hope you enjoy it.
>>
>>60572775
Shit since x220 will have libreboot by end of year and x200 already does.
>>
>>60578764
Okay I guess. Too bad the processor benches lower than ivybridge.

has anyone been far as decided to successfully put a 1st gen x1 carbon screen on their t430 yet?
>>
Does linux support active protection system on T430?
>>
can my t430 (hd4000) handle dual-monitor daisy chaining over displayport while docked?
>>
>>60580632
I believe you need displayport 1.2 to do daisychaining and I'm pretty sure T430 (and other *30's) do not have dp 1.2

I think, not sure, but that info should help you

worst case is you would need to plug one dp into the laptop
>>
>>60580652
Or i could use dvi on my dock to run the monitor on dvi --> hdmi. I was just wondering whether i should source the 4338 dock (i have 4337 with one dp, dvi and vga).
>>
>>60580688
assumed you needed 2x dp for 1440p

but yeah dvi or dvi to hdmi would work for anything 1080p and under
>>
>>60580700
i just bought two dell u2414h monitors. i was deciding whether to get one 1440p or two 1080p monitors and i went with two. hdmi should be ok then.
>>
>>60580632
HD4000 only supports one external display
>>
>>60580981
it supports 2 up to 1440p

Do thinkpads without camera have thinklight ?
>>
>>60581003
No, that's the Optimus model.
>>
>>60581397
At least my X200S and X60s does
>>
>>60581575
no, hd 3000 and hd 4000 can support two monitors up to 2560x1600 over displayport

I know because I have one sitting in front of me
>>
>>60581768
With or without dock?
>>
>>60581397
My T61 has a light and no camera.
>>
>>60581780
well no thinkpad has 2x displayports built in as far as I'm aware

I need a laptop for college. I'm a computer science major so good compile time would be nice

VGA + DisplayPort or HDMI + DP
>>
>>60582858
vga can't do 1440p and dvi->hdmi can't do 1440p either
>>
>>60582871
oh and the dvi port is not a dual-link dvi, so it can't do 1440p
>>
>>60582871
Okay smart ass - can you run two of any display combination without a dock? Any resolution.

I don't think it works, but if it does please let me know because I'm fairly certain you can't.
>>
hey there
im wanting to upgrade the ram on my t61 but im struggling to understand how to identify which ram is compatible and which isnt
would anyone mind telling me how to determine this
thanks
>>
>>60582928
You need DDR2 in SO-DIMM (laptop) form factor. You can install 1, 2 or 4 GB modules, one in each of the two slots.
>>
Is it normal that the ThinkLight shines a tiny little bit when it's not turned on?
I mean, it isn't on, but it kind of shines a little.

Also, I saw a T43 (or whatever the model with a Pentium M @2.13 GHz is) for sale for about $40, the seller says that the problem seems to be that the screen turns on for a bit, then turns off, but that it can be used with an external monitor just fine. What are the chances he has a setting on the BIOS that tells the system not to use the internal LCD?

I am currently in the process of buying a Thinkpad. The choice stands between T430, T420 and T420s.
I will do upgrades, if i get a 430 I will upgrade the keyboard to a T420 back-lid keyboard. I've got some ssd's that I will use, I will get rid of the optic drive and replace it with something that I will actually use. I will upgrade the ram to a suffisant lvl . Probably get a chink battery, and I might replace the screen further down the road. Screen of the ones I've looked at are all 1600x900 res.
Usage is mostly shitposting and surfing, watching vids, writing assignments for my masters degree so not heavy usage at all.
Any pointers as towards what I should go for is most appreciated. Are the T430 significantly better in terms of upgradability? Any disadvantages to the T420s vs the T420? I live in Scandinavia, so the market is somewhat scarce, I am looking to spend between 180-240 USD, I have found some alternatives, but did not decide which model I should go for.
>>
>>60582899
don't care, the Intel HD 4000 graphics support two displays up to 2560x1600 over displayport
>>
>>60583156
There is literally no choice other than the T430.

T420s can't have its CPU upgraded.

T430 can do EVERYTHING a T420 can but better. The only reason you get a xx20 is price.
>>
how hard would it be to replace the monitor of an X220T?

after five+ years of usage, i have burn in like a motherfucker.
>>
>>60583311
it's not hard but the new display will probably have the same problem after a few months

use a screensaver, it helps a bit

cheers, thank you for being so thorough
for some reason ive got the suspicion that if you have 2 ram strips(?) in the same laptop they have to be the same size (GB); is that true?
