Too bad it's so hard to find good quartzes nowadays. Late 70s & early 80s were the golden era of high-end quartz.

Good morning Vintage Seiko Ontario man.

So I was looking at your list of top seikos from the last thread. What is the difference between the lord marvel and the king seiko high beat? I want a nice vintage seiko but I recall you saying one of them has a plastic date gear or something and I want to avoid that. Which is the model of yours that runs at basically +/- 0?

>>
>>60446124
There are several differences between the Lord Marvel 5740C and the King Seiko 45xx. First is that the Lord Marvel is a Suwa Seikosha design, while the 45xx is a Daini Seikosha design.

It is essentially inarguable that the 45xx is a more inherently accurate movement, as this was the movement that Seiko used to end the Swiss chronometer trials and which powered the Grand Seiko Astronomical Observatory Chronometer (which is the BTFO'ing of the Swiss perfectly distilled into a single watch).

However, the 45xx is prone to excessive wear and is a bit high maintenance in general. I would stay away unless you are prepared to spend a fair bit of money over the years keeping it running in tip top shape and possibly buying donor movements down the road.

The Lord Marvel 5740C is a more simple design that lacks a date and even omits hacking, but its very simplicity is its greatest strength. The movement is extremely reliable and actually has very good inherent accuracy as well (the lack of hacking makes that a bit of a moot point). Suwa also made absolute boatloads of them over the course of several years so if you ever need a donor movement for parts, it shouldn't be that hard or expensive to get.

The one with the plastic gear in the quick-set mechanism for the day/date is the Suwa Seikosha designed 56xx King Seiko. The plastic shrinks with age and tends to eventually crack, breaking the quickset when it does. I also think the 56xx movement is strictly inferior in terms of inherent accuracy to the 52xx.

On the other hand, the Daini Seikosha produced 5245/5246/5256 King Seiko doesn't have any inherent vices and the King Seiko Specials powered by these movements are known to have received considerable extra adjustment and regulation at the factory when they were made as Daini knew it would be their last high-end mechanical before they switched to quartz for high end. My King Seiko Special is a 1975 5256-8010 and its the one that runs ~+0.0s/d

For the <$400 mark, there aren't many other options as good as Seiko, though you can get some good Swiss pieces (Hamilton, Tissot,) on the upper end of that scale. Quality is good, designs are original, and again, they have brand heritage fwiw to you.

Besides new, there are also a shit ton of vintage models to be had in almost any style you can think of.
>>
>>60454594
What's that?
>>
I ordered a Seiko SKX007 through Amazon recently and then two replacements, I returned all three. Two had misaligned chapter rings, everything was aligned fine on the 3rd but that one was completely dead. Is the quality control for these really that bad or do I just have bad luck? I'm only buying through Amazon certified sellers so I don't mind rolling the dice with the free returns.

Reference is 6139-7070. The most well known 6139s are the "Pogues", which have to be some of the ugliest watches ever made, but Seiko did make some more tasteful models. These were most significant for being one the 3 first automatic chronograph calibers to be created.

I don't own the watch anymore- probably would have kept it if the case was in better condition, but unfortunately it was polished to hell. It did satiate my appetite for a chronograph for a few years though, now I own a Speedy Mark II.

No, the f300Hz ones have the cal 1250/1255 (aka esa 9162) which is similar to the accutron tuning forks. You'll even see licensed from bulova on the casebacks of those omegas. Like the accutrons, these were the handiwork of max hetzel (same with the megasonic).

No. Omega has two tuning fork movements (up to variants like date vs day/date). They have the f300 (which is what the speedsonic has), which is the ESA 9162, also found in the Longines Ultronic and the Tissot Tissonic (yes, really). The 9162 is very similar to the bulova 214/218, with some improvements - the tuning fork shape was changed to improve positional variance and the index finger was moved to improve shock resistance. The megasonic is unique to Omega and features la souris with its magnetic gears.

Honestly they're my favorite company both from their history, their actual watches, and the fact that they haven't done stupid shit like Patek with getting rid of the Geneva Seal or throwing small movements in larger watches which is appallingly lazy for how much they charge.

Which, in the context of "the holy trinity" is not really correct. The term is really:
>The Holy Trinity of Swiss Watchmaking
And thus dealt with, in the earlier days of internet discussion, the top swiss makers.

To be honest, I don't know how VC was there instead of someone like JLC; I mean, sure in the past while they've been reclaiming lost ground (lost since like the 1950's), but in the 80's and 90's they weren't all that much to talk about when their competitors rejiggered their watchmaking identity into pure luxury items - coasting on an old reputation (funny how PP is doing this now instead once VC has gotten its shit together).

Perhaps it's talking about overall finishing? Hence disqualifying JLC despite everything it's contributed and how it basically supplied the members of the supposed trinity with ebauches and movements for aeons.

PP and VC are "high genevan watchmaking", for what it's worth these days.

Friendly reminder of the day: Those wonderful complications are lovely to look at and own, but god help you if you need shit fixed. They're finicky and fragile as fuck.

A friend of mind dropped his JLC perpetual calendar (not the new ultra thin, some older model) and it was gone for like 11 months.

My sister dropped her rolex-J U S T and it was gone for like a month.

Yeah, kinda put a damper on my afternoon (we went windowshopping for watches and I was trying on the new JLC MUT Perpetuals).

I want to like JLC, but they just seem so fragile compared to the likes of Rolex. I don't know how much wrist mileage I'd get out of something I'd be inclined to baby.

Oh, yeah, and the whole

I dunno about that.
I've been looking at basic handwound dress watches and can't help but think they nailed it with the patrimony traditionelle line. It has more character than the lange saxonia (which is a little bland in comparison) and is not only a tad more visually interesting than the patek 5196 but they also didn't cheap out with an itty bitty movement.
>>
>>60466027
Yeah, they really nailed it with this model. I love how the way they've polished the hands with one blackpolished and so always appearing dark and the other always appearing light.

The saxonia's hands are boring propellers and the patek's are just 2 mirrored edges.

Lower beat rate though, which, though kinda sucky when I think about it, doesn't really affect the way it looks so much at any rate due to the small seconds; a more jerky seconds hand isn't so noticeable when it's that small.

AP got saved by the royal joke back in 72 and has been milking that one look ever since. Especially now with the royal joke offwhore, pimped by nigger rappers and all other sorts of celeb trash, further tarnishing the brand. They don't mind though, they just want the attention.

I remember reading a story where Genta himself approached the AP booth at Baselworld when the ROO was introduced and flew into an autistic rage
>WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY ROYAL OAK!?!?!
lol

To be fair, I tried on the smaller oak and it was as it should be: a sporty looking dress watch, without being an actual sport tool watch. It's not a robust thing. I mean, externally it looks like it could take a beating but inside beats a relatively delicate haute horologie kind movement.

No one gives a shit about their other offerings. I think at last count the Oak and it's shittier variants accounted for like 2/3 of all AP sales.

>>
>>60469437
Technically this is the kind of thing line-in is for. But if you get good signal from mic that works too. I do listen to the sound of the watch through headphones when regulating, that should tell immediately if you're getting good sound or not.

>>60468828
Sounds a bit complicated just for watch regulation, especially fucking around with RCA and USB adapters. With my setup it's 1/4 phone plug on the mic, 3.5mm phone plug on the preamp, badabing badaboom you're done.
>>
>>60469672
It's ok that you shit post, but how is shart in the mart relevant here?

Calling all Accutronfags.

I have a 214 that needs a service and I've exhausted any local options. No one can fix these things.
Any places online to ship to?

You could try emailing watchmakeranon in case he's free. There's also Larry at palmer's jewelers who was the service manager at bulova back when they were still servicing 214s.

Not in these threads lately, no.

A service at palmer's would be around $300, not including replacement parts (if necessary).

There's also electric-watches, but that's in the UK.

>>
>>60474434
I work for them.

Wanna ask you something first. take your accutron and tap the case with your finger. does the second hand jump by small increments? if yes, then probably just an overhaul. if no, then we gotta dig deeper.
>>
>>60474478

Kekeroonie thought you were joking.

As far as my watch goes, it jumps, even runs slow at times. It's not a dead stop. And even back when it was running smooth it needed a little smack whenever I changed the battery to get going. Almost never had to adjust the time. Shit ran really really well.

still *sorta* working? good. probably wont need replacement parts. those fuckers have quite a few pivots and that oil solidified into glue at this point.

you're probably looking at around 200 smackeroos. also it will take awhile. we're swamped down with work at the moment. also we don't work very fast.
