My main musical interests are the following
Heavy psych rock
Progressive rock
Hard rock ("classic" stuff)
Metal (death/black)
Alternative rock
Jazz (fusion/bop/modal)
My tastes go way further than that, but those are the main ones. What sound signature would best work with those? If there isn't one that could cover all of them, I'd like the first four on that list catered to the most.

>Open
>Neutral preferably, warm possibly.
>I currently use Panasonic HTF600's with the velour earpads. I don't mind the warmness generally but sometimes the bass is far too much and I have to equalize it down.

I really don't care how much my next pair of headphones cost, as they will probably be lasting me a few years. I don't want anything ludicrously expensive, just something that is considered nice sounding and comfortable.

Aside from the primary request for a recommendation, I was looking to get my girlfriend her first real pair of headphones. She literally uses Apple earbuds right now. Her request from what I can garner is as follows:

Could anyone here recommend me some headphones from my local Microcenter from whatever they have in stock? Northern Virginia store location, budget is between $60 - $85ish. >Comfort level

>Sound signature
Considering i'm kinda new at this and haven't ever tried decent headphones before i'll just mention the use here so
i suppose whatever delivers best on those catergories. First and foremost listening to music at loud volumes the
genres will vary from classical to electro to some metal varietions to modern orchestral(incorporates both orchestral
and electro sounds) and plenty of soundtracks all of which should have at least a 320kbps mp3 quality. Another very
important use for the headphones is going to be VR gaming on HTC VIVE and asmr so a good soundstage would be
very important.
>Past headphones
Shitty cheap headsets
I have been recommended the hd 558s (with a simple mod that improves the soundstage) a couple of threads ago
but i've been trying to get my hands on those but it seems like this isn't an option anymore because everywhere
i've asked they say they have replaced them with the hd 559s which i have been getting mixed messages about
and i get the feeling especially considering there are no results on google comparing the two yet it is on the top
search results that something fishy might be going on with the new model. So my only option for the hd 558s is
paying 170€ to get them from a different store but i feel like that is a terrible deal considering i could get them for 120€
from the other stores that no longer sell them apparently. Please help me /hpg/ i'm lost now, i asked yesterday if i
should just go for a more expensive sennheiser headphone like the hd 598 but i was told that the price its at 215€ is terrible.

Fidelio X2 (better for music) or cheap ATH-AD900X (better positional sound for gaymen). Neither of those need an amp and both are very comfy.

On this shit hole I call home, everything is over priced for at least 50 dollars, so I've been using Nia's ones for a while. They work decently, battery lasts up to 7 hours and at least 4-5, and have resisted the abuse. Been thinking about upgrading to something decent, but gotta save a it first (currently have 100 dollars), so what do you recomend? I listen mainly to rock, classic and instrumental.

No, they're nearfield monitors. Great for a desk, but not ideal for your living room.

Don't get me wrong, they'd still sound good, but something like the LSR308s or ELAC B5s would be better depending on the size of room and how close to the speakers you're going to be.

Oh right. They're somewhat less sensitive than most typical headphones. Could potentially be a problem.

>>
>>60447038
Well of course, that is why i'm trying to figure out some
good headphones for the use i need them for. Considering
i live in the capital and got neighbors left and right speakers
are out of the question anyways.
>>
>>60446427
Stop looking at ohms. Resistance of headphones don't mean shit. What you need to consider when you are considering how hard headphones are to drive is sensitivity. Basically the lower it is the more power headphones will need to draw from source to achieve certain amounts of volume.
k612 generally do require amp to get the most of, that doesn't mean you can't use them without amp. Buy a pair, test if it works well with your mobo out (if it's loud enough and if the sound is satisfactory), if you don't like it then do return, you live in EU so you have the right to. Unless greece is a complete shithole and you are not allowed to return online purchases.
k612 are objectively better headhphones than shitty snapheiser 598 memes as well. You can buy amp somewhere down the line, or you can actually buy it straight away with the leftover money you have from not buying snapheisers.

Etymotic HF5/MK5/ER4SR for the neutral street cred.

Oppo PM3 for a relatively neutral/bassy closed back planar.

AKG K612 for a neutral/bright signature. Would be your first AKG. Good for collecting.

A DT770/DT880/DT990. Would be your first Beyer, would probably recommend DT990 or DT770 since those are the least neutral and have unique characteristics worth collecting and go well in a large collection. The DT880 would probably be superior as a sole headphone.

Just checked prices in most cases they aren't much cheaper from here like ~20euros cheaper at best
and in other cases like with the hd 558 they're more expensive. Also it wasn't China, the problem is that
once they get in greece and some of the shipping services gets their hand on them there is a chance
they'll find some excuse and ask you to pay additional fees if you want to take them from them.
All i know is greece is a literal shithole.

>music at loud volumes the genres will vary from classical to electro to some metal varietions
to modern orchestral(incorporates both orchestral and electro sounds) and plenty of soundtracks
all of which should have at least a 320kbps mp3 quality. Another very important use for the
headphones is going to be VR gaming on HTC VIVE and asmr so a good soundstage would
be very important.
Should i just go for hd 600 then? The prices for the sennheisers go hd 598 = 214€ hd 600 = 265€ hd 650 = 285€
Are there different brand headphones at a better price that will do their job as well?
Generally i feel like i'll be overspending if i end up spending somethng like 365€ for my headphone setup
when i set out to spend ~150€ originally especially considering all my other expenses on the matter...
I think someone recommended the BeyerDynamic DT 770 Pro (80 Ohm) to a guy looking for similar headphones

For some fucking reason 4chan kept blocking my post so here is short version. For yourself HD600. You can get used HD800 for, lel, around 800$ and many consider them to be THE END game headphones because of comfort and good driver, but you will need to EQ them to get rid of treble spike, altho many state that they couldn't EQ it out completely. If you can, try both of them in the shop and see for yourself, but otherwise I would recommend you to get HD600 and see down the years if you have an itch for getting something else, and then HD800 may cost even less with release of new top end models. Also you will need an amp for HD600 like objective 2/magni 2 or fulla 2, and no you will need it not just to make them go loud, your motherboard potentially can drive them loud enough but they will sound not as good as on amp, esp in bass.

For your GF, as >>60445432 suggested K612 is a nice pair, but there is also HD598. They have near identical FR except for upper mid, so it's mostly gonna be comfort. I didn't try K612 myself, but I know that AKG pads are nicely soft, however I can't imagine anything beating HD598 comfort with it's ear shaped cups, THINN soft pads with shit load of room for your ears, unlike motherfucking HD600 pads, and clamp so soft they disappear from your head. Also headband, so good and soft and nice, mmmmmm creamy creamy fluff.

JBL 305 have a rear bass port, so it's not a good idea to put them right to the wall or bass will be overwhelming and boomy.
>>
>>60449494

That might be a problem, they are back ported.
Can you give them 3-6 inches from the wall? It should be enough.
>>
>>60449361

Look from a business standpoint and you will see why. Upgrade HD600, but there are HD650? Upgrade something that is pass entry level--->increase in price to make a sense out of upgrade and not make your previous customers feel being ripped off. Why upgrade something that is not broken? I agree that HD600 upgrade would be nice and that there are things to improve sound wise like bass extension and faster driver, better impulse response, and some minor comfort upgrades but it will make no sense just to upgrade it, and I mean upgrade as not make a replacement. HD700 was supposed to be a middle ground between HD650 and HD800, with all perks of HD800 like soundstage and resolution/detail but for some unknown reason they made it into V shaped abomination, the only shit headphone in Sennheiser's mid to high end offerings. "You were the chosen one! It was said that you would destroy the Beyers, not join them." HD700 comfort is amazing tho, clamp not too rigid as with HD6XX and not too lose as with HD8XX, just a perfect fit.

>>60448166
>what is manufacturing in 1st world
>what is R&D, ibf 20 years old headphone
>what is profit

HD600 should cost 250-300$, massdrop price was a bulk buying. HD8xx line is trickier because there is always a premium associated with high end stuff in any product category, and even then Sennheiser is on lover side of the price spectrum with you compare to Hi-Fi memes, Audeze and some other high end manufacturers.

Get them, they're in your price range and they're good (at least I was blown away from the experience).

Ante!

I am no means an expert but I have used both headphones. IMO the DT770s are better in almost all ways. They have much greater comfort, better soundstage, and better bass. However the m50x has a detachable cable and it can fold up, so for portability they should be better. I have not noticed any harsh treble, but that could just be me getting used to it.

Sennheiser Momentum

>>
>>60452042
Alright. Some people were saying that they couldn't use them for more than a few hours due to the treble, but I guess I'll just give it a shot. Thank you.
>>
>>60452268
Just to note, I don't listen to many vocal songs, so I do not know if the treble probslem lies there.
>>
>>60452268
DT770 sounds vastly superior and won't require new pads to be comfy.
M50 aren't awful, but they're overpriced considering you can get 770's for the same price.

If you want portability, go for the m40x. Better value and less severe of a v shape.
>>
>>60452268
DT 770 has EAR RAPE treble, if you listen to electronic music, or pretty much anything else your ears will get raped to tinnitus.
>>

Protip: The LG Quadbeat 3 is probably better than 99.9% of audiophile IEMs costing in the hundreds.

Would you /g/uys recommend this, I'm more concerned about noise cancellation on an airplane over sound quality since I mostly listen to audiobooks, thanks

I own the 668b and DT770.
This anon is correct. 668b is treble rape, nearly unlistenable without eq.
770 has boosted treble, but it isn't painful.

Hey /hpg/, how do monitor 10-II's compare to modern headphones?

Will I need a DAC to run them well? I don't think I need an amp, as they seem plenty loud enough currently.
>>
>>60454465
Which ANC headphone would you recommend in general?
>>
>>60454557
If you can spend a pretty penny, MDR1000X and QC35 are probably the best ANC headphones out there. Otherwise it's just trial and error with the many budget ANC models around.

>>
are there any headphones that have the band behind the head that are good?
>>
>>60454991
QC is kinda iffy. Build quality seems decent enough as said from other anons and is relatively neutral with a slight bass boost. The Somic MM185 are the same headphones for cheaper with an attatched cable.
>>
>>60454991
>>60455025
Sound is as this anon described, as good as anything else under $100.
Really comfy stock, detachable cable is a big plus for me.

They're completely made of plastic, and I can see the hinges being a weak point in the design, but mine have held up for almost a year. They come with a year warranty anyways

anyone on this thread use Creative Live Aurvana's? currently on my second pair and really like them, but is there anything better than these and of so how, what's the main differences? how would you rate the instead of others
>>
>>60457002
Too many options to specify.
They're good for portable use, warm signature. Sound amazing if you've never had good headphones probably.
Not comfy for long term home use for me, but good enough for when I'm at the library.

If you want an upgrade in comfort without paying a lot more, CB-1 have a similar sound and proper pads on them.
>>
>>60456887
You can get M50x with a Bluetooth adapter that fits well for around there on Amazon.

Also the v-moda Crossfade wireless *may* be able to be had for around there if you're willing to wait around
>>
is the Shure se535 red worth it for $500??
>>
Is there a point in using good headphones on a shitty cheap smartphone?
I'm asking because I am wondering if I should buy my headphones first or get a decent media player
>>
>>60449435
They are indeed very comfortable, but as >>60449564 said, if you have a small head they will probably slip around if you're moving around a lot.
>>
I want to buy some chink (superlux) headphones, but I don't want a massive amount of sound leakage. It seems like the popular 681 Evo is semi-open. so does this leave me with just the 660 and 662 Evo? Are the closed back superluxes worthwhile?

Thank you for the detailed response. I wasn't that keen on jumping directly into HD800's so I will consider 600's.

well good news, i'm getting a great amp for free, so i suppose i can now look into high end headphones.
So i did a little digging around and for music, vr, ero-asmr use i'm between hd 600 for 265€ or the hd 650 for 285€

Why is everything so expensive
>>
>>60460909
I second that (HD600 owner here).

The HD600 are, despite being a "lower" model and cheaper, the most reputable headphones sennheiser makes.

The HD800 are flawed (sibilant), which is why the S model exists. They're also not targetting neutrality, whereas HD600 are pretty much the most neutral full sized headphones in the market, and they're really good all-rounders (they do everything well, no real flaws).
>>
>>60461421
equalizing is free
>>
>>60461446
>They're also not targetting neutrality
They are targeting measurements of a speaker in a diffuse field in anecdotic chamber. Both of them were made before harman's target curve became publicly known, but HD600 follows pretty close except for a bass roll off.
>>
>>60461446
What DAC and amp do you recommend for the HD600?
>>

https://www.amazon.com/Blaster-Performance-Headphone-Forming-Microphone/dp/B009ISU33E
is this a decent one for the price? i've had two xonar dgs in the past, but both of them ended up having crackling audio issues, presumably because of the capacitors being junk.
>>
>>60462122
sound cards have always been a mixed bag, from my experiance they're some of the cheapest-made parts you can buy

that said it's definitely a mixed bag, I too have had multipul soundcards fail on me yet my friend has his for over 2 years and it's still working just fine.

I'd recommend grabbing a Fiio e10K or Fulla 2 is all you plan on doing is driving your headphones. other than that you'll just have to play the lottery.
>>
>>60462122
>>60462224
didn't mean to repeat "mixed bag" twice, I'm very tired but you get the idea
>>
>>60461792
Schiit jotunheim > modi2u+magni2u > fulla2
>>
>>60462224
i guess i'll get a dac if it will have the same effect as a sound card but with less shitty parts
really the major problem i'm having is that the audio from my onboard sound card is too quiet
>>
>>60462122
Experienced with creative and sick of it. I'd suggest to just go with a schiit fulla2, which seems within your budget.

And should you need a mic, just get a usb one. I personally don't use mics much, so I use my logitech c920 webcam's integrated one, which isn't so bad.
>>
>>60462291
yeah i think that's what i'll end up doing
thanks guys
>>
>>60462290
You'll need an AMP + DAC if it's too quiet

http://schiit.com/products/fulla-2

both are good options; and will easily get your headphones loud enough to blast your ears out
