I found out it's tape turned into a makeshift pull tab. Got the 160 GB SSD out eventually(just wanted to make sure it was there). Along with that I also have this crack. Along with that one of the screen lid sides is slightly loose(will need to be replaced in the future) as is the drive cover(very slightly bent) and the battery(very slight).
They're offering a partial refund or a full refund(they'll pay for the return). I'm not sure which to take. What do you guys think, all things considered? (I know I asked earlier but I've provided a little more information since then.
>>
>>60282608
Yeah, with those issues that is a bit of a pain. I'd lookup the price of all the parts, add them up, then add at least $10 or 10% (whichever is greater), and then ask them for that amount if you're willing to actually do the labor and fix it, or just keep the cash since it's cosmetic. If they decline, return the item and at that point I'd leave a neutral or even negative review, because it sounds like the item was horribly misrepresented. That's real fucking annoying.
>>
>>60282608
I got a full refund on mine that I bought from ebay. It got damaged by GSP failure to repackage the laptop properly after inspection. Didn't have to send it back as the refund came from ebay, and it seems like the seller got to keep the money too.
>>
Importing from US is the cheapest option, and my country has exactly 1000 euro feeless import limit.
So, I want to turn 1550 buxs into <1090.
Do you know of some coupons?
There is SAV15THINKPAD to get 15% discount, would it stack with my students coupon? Or any better ideas? I really want to make it into the limit.
Please no reddit-tier "ask them to edit invoice".
>>
>>60282667

I wouldn't mind but the model they advertised in the pictures wasn't the model I got, and I emailed and asked the seller if there were any cracks on the machine and he said no. I don't think it got damaged in transit. i paid 200 euro for this.
>>
>>60282713
Yeah sounds like you got scammed by seller negligence. Tell eBay or tell that prick to refund at least half your money (if that covers your parts).
>>
>>60282713

dude I'd return it even if you had to pay return postage, not being the item in the listing and having cracks after them telling you it didn't is grounds for a chargeback in most countries and them offering to refund/partial refund as well as offering to pay return postage is them not wanting to get fucked over by the website you bought it from for mislabelling items

there's plenty of good condition thinkpads out there, don't settle for one that has been dropped causing visible damage in the corner, you don't know what other internal damage it has done and those problems might not immediately present themselves (i.e., weakened solder joints from the impact)
>>
>>60282697
>my country has exactly 1000 euro feeless import limit.
Which country is this? My limit is closer to 30-40 euro.
>>
>>60282830

Here in Europe the pickings are actually a lot tighter, unless you wanna pay a fuck tonne in shipping and taxes from the US. I'm not really sure what to do at this point; the X220 seems perfect but I can't seem to get my hands on one.

>>

>>

You don't even need a good CPU unless it's soldered on. I literally buy the absolute cheapest I can find no matter how bad the condition as long as the price is low, and then order all the parts immediately and assemble it myself.

For now i just rotate the screen and digitizer input with a script that i set to one of the buttons on the front but there has to be a better way.
>>
>>60292239
eGPU setups are usually through the ExpressCard slot, doing them through the mPCI-E slot inside can be bothersome and besides, you would probably end up cutting a hole for the cable to go through, so ExpressCard Is the way to go.
It's usually ExpressCard 34 (which is the width in mm), but if your PC is older it might have both 34mm and 54mm versions. In the end it doesn't matter which one you use.
Oh, one thing, though: you need an external 12V power supply and external monitor to make it work, unless you want to do some trickery to make it work with the internal LCD...

kek. I fried my overclocked T430's fan header because when I was reseating the new keyboard I accidentally pinched one of the fan wires and it was cut in half. Somehow when it broke it took the fan header with it.

Ordered a new motherboard for $35, and luckily I was able to snag the very rare T430 fan that I couldn't find before, from China.

Hopefully I can squeeze out the very last few points of cooling from it when it arrives. Pic related.

How did you overclock the non-XM CPU?

Did your BIOS have a locked MSR bit or did everything just werk (TM)?

>tfw W520 has locked multiplier on an XM CPU
>>
>>60294371
Neither. The dude with the ridiculous W530 XM was also confused, but after reading up on QM chips I figured out that there's two locks on QM chips, and one can be unlocked:

- The BIOS, which I had to mod the MSR bit to remove.

- The multiplier, which actually has a limit, but not a direct lock. I can set my multipliers to 42, 41, 40, 40 with an unlocked BIOS, which is enough for me. Stock multipliers cap at 38 for one core (I don't know the rest).

if you use the v8 EXP GDC dock, what else do you need besides a power supply?

And as for the power supply, do you need an ATX PSU or can you use a power brick with a barrel connector?
>>
When do new Thinkpads typically get a price cut? Can I expect it by August?
>>
>>60295122
The price cuts will not make it worth it. Anything after the xx40 series is incrementally CPU improvements or port changes. Only worthwhile changes are some of the ports and DDR4 if you don't need VGA and want the new RAM.
>>
>>60294371

>>60295010

you don't need ATX PSU. You can use either a standard chink 12V PSU with standard connector, Dell DA-2 220W brick ($5 on ebay) or ATX.
>>
Is it normal to a refurbisher to change thermal paste or should I bug him a little more to ask if he has done it?

Does anyone here know where I can get a new X230 9-cell battery for the best price possible?
It has to be genuine because of Lenovo shenanigans.
>>
>>60296708
>It has to be genuine because of Lenovo shenanigans.

This hasn't been true in like 3 years. The DRM has been cracked for ages, and if the battery you buy isn't cracked it can still be bypassed by a one-time software patch.

>>60296779
So for my next question, where can I find the best aftermarket batteries that don't rape my wallet?

Play the chinese roulette in ebay?
>>
>>60296813
Basically, yes. Make sure they state the wattage. The 9-cell OEM batteries are 94Wh or 8.4Ah. Anything less means it's weaker than the Lenovo batteries.
>>
>>60296831
That's funny, because often the chinks state one wattage/hour and then the battery ciomes with another.
>>
>>60296708
Try auction sites like eBay. I got a genuine unused 9 cell for the same price as the least sketchy looking Chinese knock off
>>
>>60296846
Then you return those and tell them to fuck off.

Either that or pay out the nose for a genuine one and risk getting a lower Wh due to wear.

I had to spend $75 for a 9-cell new in box.

I have the following:
>X230
>T430
>8470p
So I think I can chime in on the whole HP vs Lenovo shitposting.

>durability
HP is more durable on a day to day basis, but a catastrophic fall will fuck up an HP much more. The HP's magnesium body is surprisingly bendy. The Lenovo magnesium body is tougher but more brittle.

>inputs
HP keyboard is shit. SHIT. It has a godly texture though. Lenovo keyboard is amazing in comparison, regarding the layout.
HP "trackpoint" is SHIT. Much less precision when compared with the real trackpoint.
HP completely destroys Lenovo with their trackpad though. Very, very nice.

>outputs
The IPS on the X230 is miles ahead of both the T430 768p TN and the 8470p 900p TN. Even the x230's TN is better than the bigger screens on the other laptops. The worse offender is HP with its shit viewing angles, but I believe the T430's 900p screen is the same dogshit.

>Miscellaneous
HP is easier for maintenance, the whole underside of the laptop comes off and everything is shown. With the T430 you have to take both the underside and the keyboard to have easy access to everything.
HP cooling is worse. Both the X230 and 8470p have the i5-3320m with integrated graphics, and the x230 actually has better cooling with its smaller fan.
Lenovo hinges are much much MUCH better.
Both companies are shitty regarding whitelists.
Lenovo batteries are better.

Regarding looks, both company's laptops are sexy, for different reasons.

That's all I can think about for now.

No, it was less money because it was of unknown/lesser quality and should have been avoided if capacity mattered to you.

Good sellers of used batteries charge it up and screencap the capacity/charge cycles so you know what you're getting. It takes time and effort on the seller's part which is worth a premium instead of average parts recycler sellers just picking one out of a bin and posting it on eBay with a "lolidunno, good luck" type listing with no further effort.

>>
>>60300265
Latitudes are very durable too.
They're plastic, but the edges are metal, completely protecting the thing from falls and whatnot.
>>
>>60300384
The plastic scares me, I had a Dell laptop back in 07 that I had the palmrest replaced 3 times on. It would always crack in the same place. Clearly a structural design issue. It eventually cracked again and I stopped caring
>>
>>60300372
:(

thanks for being patient with me in at least this reply... And I did the math, and the market for this model right now gives me a $130 difference to buy a battery, obviously excluding the hassle of getting one (and possible shipping fee dumbassery). So it was fine I guess, but I'd prefer the shit said battery is essentially dead, so I'd see the price more honestly.
>>
Anyone have a t460p with quad core i7? Does one fan keep it cool? Why do all thinkpads only have one fan?
>>
>>60300430
Honestly you could have probably just as easily gotten a decent capacity battery if it was luck-of-the-parts-bin draw. The point being, if you're shelling out good shekels for something, it's better to buy from "good" sellers and know for sure what you're getting. 80%+ used genuine batteries can be had for the same money as new chinashit batteries that may defecate the futon in >12mo.

Was this the battery that came with a laptop, or was it one you bought standalone as a "used battery"? If it was one you got as part of the laptop, don't sweat it. Like >>60300207
said, most used laptop batteries are trashed anyway and you should always budget for a new one.
>>
>>60300456
more people on /r/Thinkpad seem to get newer Thinkpads than /tpg/ so I found a review some guy gave of a t460p with the i7-6820HQ

"I don't have any thermal monitoring software installed, but the machine defintely heats up under load. I played a few minutes of Skyrim (which was quite playable at 1366x768, at least with my minimally-modded install), and the machine got pretty warm on the bottom close to the exhaust. This has already been noted in various places... if you want something that will run flat-out indefinitely this is not the machine for you. Under normal usage it stays cool and is basically silent (even when the fan comes on it's very quiet). I can't hear any capacitor whine."

It won't let me post the link here but the review is by a user named "binarypdx". Just search "t460p" review in /r/Thinkpad
>>
>>60300524
It came with the laptop. And to be honest, the screen resolution on this thing isn't even maxed (I thought it could've been until like a fuckass I searched how to check, after purchasing). I thought it was a much better deal than it was. Were this regular market price with a good battery I'd've gone for something different.

So basically after "taxes" of getting a usable battery on my own goddamn time I will have more or less an exactly average deal. I fucked myself. In the future I'll look back on this cuckening shamefully and be better for myself.

You'll get better at it over time if you pay attention and learn from your mistakes. I wouldn't take the battery situation on this too hard. Screen res sounds like it may have been avoidable tho.

For instance, I had a few shekels and took a shot on an x230 from a recycler that was a -CTO make (who fucking knows the specs). Ended up with an x220 battery that wouldn't charge (that I revived with 85% capacity after the EC flash) and the IPS screen.

Another time I bought a T60p (T601 shell donor) with the UXGA IPS screen and it had fucking pressure marks in it that made it unusable and even worse, Computrace was enabled and the mobo shit itself (not that I was particularly interested, but it could have gone in the parts bin as a spare).

Sometimes you get lucky, and sometimes with a keen eye you can avoid pitfalls. But you gotta have the stake to win or lose at it if you're going to "live dangerously" on unknown type auctions.

Usually, if you get "fucked" in some way, by the time you replace parts and whatnot you still end up with an average deal.
>>
>>60300801
The seller only showed the fucking BIOS screen. I had no idea what to do with that. I was hungry for the max res screen so this'd be a straight upgrade for me, but I asked them the res instead. I got anxious about losing my goddamn "good deal" though, so I went for it anyway. They shipped it that morning so I feel they saw my question and pretty much laughed at it.

It wasn't like your deals, though. You'd get compensation for pressure marks, and ebay might side with you for Computrace being enabled. Here I just (in ignorance) thought I was getting (or could've gotten) better than the worst case scenario.

The screen is the real thing preventing me from really sitting on this. I could've known it before purchase had I not been deluded into thinking this was a "good deal". The lowest price for this model right now on ebay doesn't have the max-res screen, but still, to upgrade to it nullifies the market undercut of the lower-res screen. It's an average deal where a seller rolling the dice on battery shenanigans made me think it could've been good.

But yeah. Not gonna let this happen in the future. At least the laptop is in excellent condition, though. And apologies for not defining it. I read a few threads ago that you can view sold listings on ebay, so I'm consciously being vague on purpose.

It's just a W550s refresh, instead of the new design that the P50 uses. I guess there's nothing inherently wrong with it, but I've heard many great things about the P50's quality.

I have it. Lenovo has been repairing it for 6 weeks, but all around it is a great machine, only thing I don't like is that it's a ULV.

Like someone else said, it's just a W550s refresh. Same chassis only with HDMI instead of VGA.

It's good, but it should have been a T560p or something, I don't think it deserves a P/W rating.

>>
>>60302413
That's not that good of a deal. You're better off buying something like the W540 for less (which also includes graphics and can have a 3K display if you need it). The 940MX is really not that great.
>>
>>60302520
I flashed out my ME you fucking sperg.
>>
>>60302793
seeing that the 940MX scores more than double the performance, that the trackpoint is better in the newer thinkpads, at least compared to the W540, that they weigh less, that the processor is much less power hungry so that I wouldn't need the 99wh beast extension on an already 15 inch laptop

I guess the W540 looks like a good laptop though for half the price but my budget demands something a bit more premium (14nm processor)
>>
>>60302899
What? The K2100 performance is nearly identical to the 940MX, the trackpoint is the same, and the processor is less power hungry because it has about half the performance.
>>
>>60302520

Oh my bad I was looking at the lowering end graphics model. But here is the higher end.
https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-Quadro-K2000M.76893.0.html
3D mark 11 - 1798

https://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-940MX.156033.0.html
3D mark 11 - 2513.5

So no huge difference actually it looks, but it stands that the T470 is at least much more portable. If I had less of a budget this W540 looks like a great machine still, though I don't know if a high spec one with 99Wh could be much cheaper.

Processor speed doesn't even matter that much just that I have 16GiB RAM
>>
>>60302978
Sounds like it fits your specs and the T4xx series is right for you, but I highly recommend the T460 instead then. Same exact performance but is cheaper and 1 gen behind. Baby lake has done close to zero in terms of performance gains, Intel is fucking bottlenecked by silicon.
>>
>>60302958
Penryn thinkpads do have ME though. Only Merom ones (i.e. T60(p)/X60) are still safe).
>>
>>60303010
You would be surprised though (and this is all intel can do to improve these days) with the power kaby lake gives in dedicated 4k decoder for the trendy new 4k screen devices like the Surface I am currently typing on and attempting to replace simply because the HD 520 and 8Gib RAM don't mix with more than two YouTube videos playing OR more than two different classes' powerpoints and documents sitting in the RAM

But the T460/70 aren't 4k nor touch screen devices so the 520 works just fine. I considered activating the 940m in my Surface Book still on the book for extra performance still just using Chrome.

This is actually why MacBook Pro uses Iris Pro, even Skylake gen stuff with run into trouble giving a smooth experience.
>>
>>60302520
There was a dedicated thread about it >>60250680 but unfortunately the issue is vastly downplayed (if not plainly disregarded) in other threads, surprisingly including the /tpg/.

General situation is that all Thinkpads since the T410/T510/X201 series are affected, but only T420/T520/X220 and later will receive updated ME firmware from Lenovo (i.e. the T410, T510 and X201 will be "left for dead" in a vulnerable state). A ghetto solution it to procure SPI flashing equipment and try to use me_cleaner to erase all ME firmware partitions except the most fundamental one. This is not trivial and risks bricking the board, also it's not really known how much it actually accomplishes as ME still keeps running with the last part of ME firmware as well as its own internal ROM which is completely unknown and opaque.
>>
>>60303132
I don't think it was downplayed here. The two groups of people here either
- don't care
- have already removed/disabled it with an SPI flash
>>
>>60302520
You seriously expect fags who embraced chiclet keyboards, systemd, and Windows 10, and who have "nothing to fear because nothing to hide" to give a shit?
>>

>>
>>60303132
>it's not really known how much it actually accomplishes as ME still keeps running with the last part of ME firmware as well as its own internal ROM which is completely unknown and opaque.

me_cleaner leaves about 80kb of the firmware intact. gotta be some lean-ass code if there's anything left that can still be reached out to. does leave the rom, which probably just initializes the firmware
>>
>>60302799
>I flashed out my ME
>flashed out
>ME

You do realize that the ME is fucking HARDWARE sitting inside your CPU that has its own internal ROM which is known to Intel only, and that the ME is still running even if you used me_cleaner to erase most of the external SPI flash firmware?

For now I'd just plug it into an external monitor til you're done with school. If you see yourself using it for another couple of years, replace the screen and move on. Being clumsy is expensive.

Failing that, see if you can land a busted x220 with a working screen or a used whole lid for less money than the screen itself. Sometimes (often?) people get rid of whole assemblies cheaper than you can get specific parts.
>>

Reseat the screen ribbon cable. That may in and of itself fix the problem at least temporarily. Make sure it's not binding on anything. Next (slightly more invasive) step would be replace the ribbon cable itself.

Have you checked with another pair of headphones to see if it's the connector or the socket?

>>60304282
I guess I didn't understand - I thought you were saying they'd have to dump the BIOS themselves, then your patcher would take over and actually create the patch file. Then it'd be back on the user to create the BIOS patch USB and execute.
>>
>>60304472
T430 is hardware flash. You dump the BIOS, my patcher mods it, you flash it back. Currently most people have no idea how to mod their bios and have someone from bios-mods do it for them.
