Don't forget:

If you want to hardmod, X230/T430 is objectively better.

If you like the new style but want to keep the trackpad and can swap it out, T440p is objectively better, T440 is better for dual core.

X240 is kinda shit unless you really want more battery.

Getting real fucking tired of lugging around my T540p every day and want to get a 14 incher like the T470. Is now a good time to upgrade?

Yeah, I'm kind of waiting on that, but I also have an overseas trip coming up and I'd really like to have a smaller laptop by then.
>>
>>60245965
I've been lurking on reddit and some other forums and the general consensus is that it won't be announced (if it ever does) until the 25th anniversary which isn't until June or November
>>
Is this good?
>>
>>60246075
that would be very good for a T61

but would be very bad for an X260
>>

what hard mods for the x230 are you suggesting?
>>
>>60246105
X230 has the keyboard and wlan flash mod (which also enables advanced bios settings), everything else is already superior.

I'm on an x230 with a 9 cell battery.
>>
>>60246127
What is this wlan flash mod? Google has nothing.
>>
>>60246185
The reason memers keep recommending the x220/t420 over the t430 is the keyboard and that you can install an ac network card with softmodding (no taking the laptop apart).

If you're not lazy / a moron, you can take the laptop apart and use hardware to achieve these things and end up with a better system.
>>
I currently have a fully loaded T460P......Is the T470P worth the upgrade? Costs about the same as my 460 when I used the perks code.

>>60246264
No, but I think that's extreme cherry picking. How many people in this thread run libreboot for reasons other than to meme?

For libreboot, currently you can't use x220/t420 either. You're stuck with x200/t400.
>>
>>60246319
Isn't it around 20 hours?
>>
>>60246264
>>60246412
To add on, coreboot runs on x230 and t430s (not t430 oddly).

You can remove the same amount of Intel ME from either generation (disabled but manifest/sig still exists - ie non functional but "still there" if you're going to be autistic).

I have new T420, I say new because it is mint condition.
CPU temperature is ~40C when coding, ~45 when on web and 50-55 when watching video.
Given that it is 32nm CPU(2520) is that good?

god no.

Check the wiki. For an X220 you should only be paying up to $250 dollars for any model. I personally bought a low specc'd, but good condition thinkpad and I'm going to upgrade everything (Ram, hdd->ssd, monitor) when I get the money and time.

T530 or T430? 530 has an option for a 1080p screen that isn't complete ass but I never see it mentioned here. Are there compatibility issues?

1080p W520 is an option but its a gen behind and it weighs a ton. I can't afford a 1080p W530.
>>
Are there any working TouchPad drivers for Windows 10? Both my T420 and W520 TouchPad needs to be rubbed aggressively after waking. It's almost as slow as a cold boot when resuming from sleep.
>>
>>60246233
You're going to lose 30 to 60% of it's value if you sell the T460p for a 3 to 10% performance increase of a 'better' laptop.

Are you going to ask this question when the T480p comes out?

You just need a 900p cable.

>>
>>60248073
You need a T420/30 with a 900p display already installed
if its 720p, then you need the cable.

Well assuming I get one with a 1600x900 display stock it's drop in then? there are plenty of those on ebay
>>

It's a drop in.

The cable swap is very easy if you're just going from HD to HD+. It's only the X1C/FHD mod that's a pain in the ass.

The GPU is not a lot more powerful, and unless you shit money or plan to sell your P50 to fund the new laptop this is a retard tier idea.
>>
Fuck

It seems my x230 has a bad charging circuit or something because I can't charge my battery. I've tried with 2 different replacements and one I had to return because it came with no charge.

The second one did but it's not charging at all despite saying 'plugged in, charging'

Apparently this is a pretty common issue for this shitbucket
>>
Would anybody be interested in a full modification guide with pictures for the T430 and T440p?

The wiki seems sparse on certain processes/information and a lot of the same questions get repeated here. I've taken apart enough to know the layout of the machines by memory. I'm basically a ThinkPad autist this point.

Okay I'll start a writeup sometime later this week.

I'll add T420 and the X series later down the road once I get my hands on some.

Currently, these are the mods I have that I'll do write ups on. Am I missing anything?

T430/X230
- Classic Keyboard
- BIOS Flash
- CPU Upgrade (T only)
- Heatsink Upgrade (T only)
- Screen/Cable Swap

T440p/X240
- Good Trackpad
- BIOS Flash (not necessary for AC WLAN cards but for Advanced Menu/Overclocking)
- CPU Upgrade (T only)
- Heatsink Upgrade (T only)
- Screen/Cable Swap

Sadly it seems the T440p is the end of the road for CPU upgrades of any kind in ThinkPads. Everything after is BGA soldered...
>>

The X240 has probably less performance than an X230, but still it is limited with its heat sink design anyways, so a i7 X230 was nothing to brag about compared to a quadcore i7 T430

I recommend the X230 and a few others recommend it as well.
You're the fucking idiot who said 'I don't want USB 3.0, better CPU, GPU performance, I want a shitty 6 row keyboard instead'.

A few years back, price was a determining factor too.
Logically, people buy newer equipment so that software and hardware can be better supported too.

Again, you disregarded factors over 'hey this laptop is better because muh keyboard feel'.

I think X220 and T420 are recommended because they can use 3rd party batteries (despite most of /g/ saying they blow up, they fucking don't) and the older keyboard layout

It is literally a pissing contest here about the chicklet keyboard, it is fucking stupid, they are just echoing what Rossman says (who seems to only focus on fixing macbooks while talking how shitty they are).

I mean the IPS T60p was still recommended when the T430 came out.
Even then, people recommended putting a T61 mobo on that. AND they would say 'lol ur gpu is going to burn out' or "eww why did you get shitty intel graphics and not a dGPU built after 08/08?"

Yes I am. The BIOS mod unlocks TDP and some clocks options on the QM CPUs, and combined with ThrottleStop you can keep Turbo Boost on forever AND go from 3.8GHz to 4.2GHz.

With an XM CPU the BIOS flash lets you OC as high as 5GHz, but that's only doable on the W530 without cashing in your home insurance.

>I think X220 and T420 are recommended because they can use 3rd party batteries

Two things:
1. You CAN use third party batteries. I've tested 6 different ones on a stock T430. They ALL worked with no error. Whatever DRM Lenovo had back when these first came out has been LONG broken.
2. Third party batteries suck utter horse shit and out of all the ones I tried, none had over 94Wh (9-cell)

>It is literally a pissing contest here about the chicklet keyboard, it is fucking stupid, they are just echoing what Rossman says
Rossman *LIKES* the chicklet keyboard. He hates the loss of the 7th button row, but he says he likes the new keyboard overall.

I know its anecdotal but I've personally had good results with third party
But some die sooner than expected, but realistically I saved $100 and they died after the 2 year warranty expired, oh well.

I think its good the third party factories found a way to break that EC lock.

I feel like I just committed a robbery...

My next mod project was going to be a T440p with a 4910QM, but this was listed for $190 BIN... what a retard.

The T440p goes for ~$250 regularly, and the W540 which is IDENTICAL except for the GPU (which I don't need) goes for $400+.

So looks like I'm overclocking a 4940XM in this baby, swapping out the touchpad, and throwing in a 1TB SSD and 16GB of RAM.

Is the X220 still a decent buy in 2017 if I want a daily driver that's reasonably portable with an acceptable battery life? I'm mainly going to be using it for web browsing and web dev. I've also considered the T420 but that might not be portable enough - still unsure, however. What do?

The T50 was a T4x upgrade that updated it to a Nehalem i7. It was their first effort and wasn't particularly well-received. The X62 put Broadwell in an X61 body, complete with a 1400x1050 IPS screen modded in and the custom screen bezel you can see in the picture. From what I've heard, it's of much higher quality, although I don't know if you can get one anymore. The T70 is still in progress last I'd heard, and plans to put either Skylake or Kaby Lake in the 4:3 T6x models.

If you hate yourself there's always lainchan. Some of the special snowflake shitter mods ran away and made their own board.

Kalyx was responsible for deleting the entire site about a month ago during his autistic fit and that's when they all found out no one was actually making backups. I know a mod there too, he's 25 though. Junk and them are gone though, and made lainchan.jp. Not sure if that's even still up.

Lainchan.jp is still up, and it's pretty decent. I prefer it over OG Lainchan.

It blows my mind that Appleman didn't think to make backups.

Wasn't the story that he was storing backups on the same drive that was wiped or something? IIRC it was a stupid mistake.

Appleman's idiocy and Kalyx' autism resulted in the perfect storm.

OVENPAD Chronicles III
>On the Previous episode: After buying a x220 an cheching it, Paellanon finds out his Thinkpad is an oven. Asking on /tpg/ for advice, Paellanon was asked to change the thermal paste and clean the fan. B-b-but Paellanon never did than before, So he thought in taking the laptop to a repair service. /Tpg/ made fun of him.

Now. After 3 hours of patience, 2 different video tutorials (one of them in Nintendish) I did it. People, my thinkpad keeps and basic use about 75ÂşC (which is a really great improv since it was reaching 93Âş in idle).
Thanks /tpg/!
Next step: Linux Mint balls deep!

So I want to get a used t440 for university and I'm afraid it might be too loud for classes and/or the library.
Does anyone know how loud the fan/ the keyboard is?
>>
>>60245690
On a Mini Dock Series 3 Type 4337 using T420 can I get a decent resolution on a VGA port? Forcing the mode with xrandr is not a problem as I did the same now without the dock to force the correct resolution and refresh rate on the external display connected directly to T420's VGA port.

Would appreciate a reply as I'm currently contacting multiple sellers within my city.
>>
>>60259261
You have fan control and don't smash your keyboard.

Problem solved?
>>
>>60259241
75°C is still pretty high if you ask me man. My x220 never goes over 60. Clean the fan too, and make sure nothing is blocking the exhaust.
>>
>>60255886
I'd return them if I were you.
How much did you pay? And how many hours of battery life are you getting on what model?
>>
>upgrade T430's CPU to an i7-3720QM
>idle temps are around 50-55°C
>with Nvidia card disabled, idle temperature is around 40-50°C
>under normal use, temps are 50-75°C (usually temps are a few degrees lower in Linux than in Windows)
>if playing a game, temps are 75-95°C, with a few spikes higher

Aside from gaming, how do these temps look? On my desktop, I'm used to normal use temps below 50°C and higher load temps of 60-70°C.
>>
>>60259960
That's basically what you'd expect, you can disable turboboost if you want to play vidya, that'll keep max temp under 85 degrees.

it's basically the same thing but less autistic. grow up.

Between a X220, X230, T410, T420 and T420S, which is the better choice for a long lasting battery?
>>
>>60260452
Nothing that has an S in the name. These only support small batteries. The other ones are more or less the same, depending on hardware specs.

x230 most likely.

how big of a difference are we talking in hours between slim versions and their regular version?

how much better is the x230 compared to a t420 or t420s?
>>
>>60260549
The slim versions only get 3 cell batteries. These are good for a maximum of 3 hours if they're new. The other ones get up to 9 cells which make for up to 9 hours from my experience. The X series laptops also have an option for a slice battery that can be combined with the 9 cell. It makes the laptop considerably bulkier but with 9 cell plus slice 21 hours are possible.

Hello ! I'm new here. I got a new job and I'm moving soon, I was thinking about getting a new laptop.
Budget: 800 +- 200 €
Location: Currently : Europe, soon : Philippines
Size: I don't mind as long as it isn't fuckhuge.
Performance:
I will mainly do code (lots of compiling) , audio editing (I use reaper and FL studio) 3D modeling (blender) for my job.
I really don't play recent games; I would like to be able to run Dolphin and play oldish games like Dark Souls /Dragon's Dogma at max fps without it overheating.
Other requirements:
I'll use a mic and a MIDI keyboard with it and would like an ethernet port.

You people are fucking retarded. Intel themselves put out a pdf for short-term solutions to the gaping fucking hole that's affecting every CPU with AMT from the past seven years. Why don't you use Windows XP with Internet Explorer 6 while you're at it, since you love security holes so much.

Is X250 good?
>>
>>60262189
I like it a lot. As long as you stay away from 40 series you'll be fine. X260 is better though. Haven't had a chance to get my hands on an X270 but judging from the T470 it's probably pretty amazing. The 70 series is what ThinkPads should have been all for those years after Lenovo took over.
>>
guys this is very serious and possibly unbelievable for some of you
I have been living without a computer at all since January
reason was mainly no money, like literally no money at all
but finally I'm able to afford something shitty and since I've been lurking this hell prior for nearly a decade now, I know about ThinkPads
so since my life is fucking insane, I want a quick answer and I just can't spnd days researching like I used to when I was bulding my first PC roughly 2 decades ago
are t420 an ok choice for now? how long are they going to last, lurking and streaming considered?
thank you
>>
>>60262270
I didn't know there's a X260 and X270, thanks. Is the keyboard as bad as they say?
>>
>>60262293
>I didn't know there's a X260 and X270
There's a new series every year and a half roughly.
>Is the keyboard as bad as they say?
The keyboard is great. Most of the criticism towards the new keyboard is about the layout which is, admittedly, not as good as on the old models. But aside from that it feels exactly the same as it did on the 20 series or before that.
>>
>>60262332
>it feels the same

I have both keyboards side by side right now, and this is an outright lie.
>>
what linux distro should I run on the t420?
>>
>>60262356
Maybe you got a shit manufacturer on one of them. The whole construction is EXACTLY the same. There is literally no difference. I got a T400, an X220 an X230 and an X260 and they all feel the same.
>>
>>60262276
a t420 will easily last a few more years, even more comfortably if it has an ssd
>>
>>60262378
No they don't. I have multiple T430s and two with xx20 keyboards.
>>
>>60262395
what leads you to believe this?
>>
>>60262395
I've had at least one ThinkPad from every generation since T60 and I can assure you, you can tell different keyboard manufacturers apart, but not generations. The only things Lenovo changed with the new keyboard were the shape of the keycaps and the layout. The rubber dome and plastic parts underneath the keycap remained 100% unchanged.

>>
>>60262515
The feel is about how it responds when you press the key down. Learn some basic stuff about keyboards. The tactile feedback.
>>
>>60262549
No, that's actuation force and travel. "Feel" is not a technical term. Fuck off.
>>
>>60262515
Dude, he didn't say the keelcaps feel the same. He said the action of the keyboard is the same. Which is true btw. Besides, the keycaps feel pretty much the same too. Still basic plastic. Shape doesn't really matter. You don't press down on the spaces in between the keys, do you?

>>60262567
Autismus maximus. We're not talking in technical terms here. Neither do journalists or anyone whose job it is to test and rate new laptops for the general populace. Besides, you're very well capable of "feeling" actuation force and travel. If you weren't they wouldn't make a difference.
>>
>>60262636
>keelcaps
wtf did I do?
>>
>>60262636
Now we're splitting hairs over what feels means. Sure, construction is the same. I like the layout and the physical top layer more than the new keyboards.

Been running this T520 since early 2012. It's had to have two hard drives replaced, a keyboard, and had RAM bumped up from 6 gb to 8 gb. I've rrad varying sources on what max RAM is, some saying 16 and others saying 8. It has the i7 2640m at 2.8 ghz, any advice on what max RAM is for the system and how to overclock the cpu?

usually a full charge, deplete, then full again. But some battery manuals say otherwise.

What do you want to know?
It is an successor to the ThinkPad Reserve Edition, which that was essentially a leather bound X61s

>>60260549
Ivy Bridge has better battery life and possibly better processing
HD4000 graphics is a significant upgrade to HD3000, so much so that some disregard nVidia 14" laptops.

is getting an X1 Carbon and Thunderbolt 3 enclosure a way to have a portable laptop that I can come home and Gayme on, or is there a more cost effective way?
>>
>>60265787
The T470 is probably cheaper.
I get the sense that Thinkpads aren't as popular with eGPU gamers because they don't have a quad core model with TB3 that doesn't have workstation pricing.
>>
>>60263587
its a workstation so 16gb at least
