Alright so I just did a fresh install of debian 8 and this is the process I had to go through to install the IDLE for Python 3.4:

- try to download and install idle-python3.4 package
- get told I need python3-tk package
- try to download and install python3-tk package
- get told I need blt_2.5.3 package
- try to download and install blt_2.5.3 package
- get told I need tk8.6 package
- try to download and install tk8.6 package
- Success!
- Do all of the above in reverse order

Is this how it's going to be for every package I try to install? Is there an easier way?

Okay, not sure which thread is the real thread, so I'll post in both:

Anyone knowledgeable about installing gentoo with UEFI support?

I'm at the point where I should install grub, but it tells me:
EFI variables not supported on this system.

Doing some digging, I found that I need to exit the chroot and "modeprobe efivar", but I get

modprobe: FATAL: Module efivar not found in directory

I have also tried modprobe efivars and modprobe efivarfs. Both with the same result. I can only conclude that the minimal installation ISO does not have the ability to do this? Is that correct? And if so, how can I install in UEFI mode?

In all fairness, the other thread actually predates this by 10 minutes.
Bit cheeky making it that close to the bump limit, but it was after 300, and you should have checked the catalog before going ahead.

At this point, you're both just screaming "my thread is better because I says so".
If you cared that much, make the thread on or just before the bump limit like a good turbo-autist.

>>
>>60178340
I'm not defending the thread faggot, just saying that he's not actually doing anything wrong, you just happen to not agree with him.
If it bothers you that much, put in the effort to get there first.

Also, this is exactly how /flt/ turned into /fglt/ in the first place, so your getting butthurt is equally hilarious as pathetic.

>Git good or get out

Also, that thread has more unique IPs than here, so if you want to maintain the lower-traffic thread you're welcome to it I guess.

I'd just like to interject for moment. What you're refering to as GNU, is in fact, GNU/GNU, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus GNU. GNU is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called GNU, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a GNU, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. GNU is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. GNU is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with GNU added, or GNU/GNU. All the so-called GNU distributions are really distributions of GNU/GNU!

This isn't a liberal arts course, repeating things doesn't make them true.

If you have a difference of opinion you are welcome to it, but there are no hard __FACTS__ when it comes to Linux vs GNU/Linux vs Lignux or whatever the fuck meme name is cool these days.

Again, if it bothers you that much, step up your game and beat them to the finish, no point crying about it when janny clearly isn't bothered enough to help you.

it's like Ubuntu, except all DEs have the buttons on the right side like god intended. No orange color scheme. Not based on Debian or anything, a true from-upstream distro. Corporate backing so you don't feel guilty for not participating in the community as much as you should.
I could go on, but these are the reasons that come to mind.
But with all it's good sides, Fedora is heavily into Gnome and Systemd, and it shows. Happy New Redhat World :(

Hey guys, I'm running Linux 18 (Sarah) and I've got the latest version (2.7) of wine-staging installed, got a coupe of questions:

If I install winetricks would it still work with wine-staging?
Suppose I want to setup a directory for certain libraries or whatever, I know that for wine you'd use
mkdir ~/wine-whatever
and then to configure it
WINEPREFIX=~/wine-whatever winecfg
, does the same thing apply to wine-staging?
Last but not least, which do you guys consider better: Wine 2.01 or Wine-staging?

Arch, Gentoo, or Fedora? My number one priority is security while still being usable. My number two is controlling bloat. My number three is ease of use (e.g. being able to hook my laptop up to the TV, having suspend on lid close actually work).

I was leaning Arch, just because it's installed on my old (now backup) laptop and I want to standardize one distro across every device I own.

My only concern is Arch dropped GRSecurity support and I can't find anything regarding what Hardened Gentoo is going to do about it.

Pacman is comfy as fuck though.

If security and stability are REALLY you number one for you (with side order of a lean system) then you should be looking at CentOS or Debian stable. My guess is after seeing what security and stability actually looks like, you'll bump up the priority of ease of use and having modern packages.

It's not that it can't handle depends so much as there are multiple possible candidates/versions to fulfill dependencies, each with there own dependencies. Also existing software may depend on a conflicting version so replacing something may have side effects. So the package manager is like: you figure it out. Other distros get around this by only providing one packages that provides XYZ. So do you want choice or do you just want it to work?

Just recently discovered the "dd" command, for making disk images, cloning/wiping an entire hard drive or partition, and other clever uses. You can also truncate an image with "truncate" or expand it with "dd" as needed. It's like a whole new world has been opened to me. 4 partitions: 1 is 1-3 MB with bios_boot flag and no FS, 2 is 3-137 MB with boot, esp flags and ext2, 3 is swap and 4 is root ext4. No idea why GRUB isn't picking up at all on boot and I have never had this issue before. Ran grub-install /dev/sda and grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg (which was mounted /dev/sda2). Made this a while back. Let dd generate some random bytes and use imagemgick's convert to create a wallpaper.

dd if=/dev/urandom bs="$((1920*1080/8))" count=1 | convert -size 1920x1080 -depth 1 gray:- out.png

Or set it directly:
dd if=/dev/urandom bs="$((1920*1080/8))" count=1 | convert -size 1920x1080 -depth 1 gray:- png:- | feh --bg-fill -

That said, imagemagick can do this too using +noise:
convert -size 1920x1080 -colorspace gray xc:gray +noise random png:- | feh --bg-fill -

Try /dev/men instead of /dev/random for extra fun (but never post a png of your memory online, since it holds, well, your memory).

>>
>>60186481
you don't have to start from scratch with eufi really.
It's what i use on arch.
I make a 500m/1g partition for /boot
copy the kernels and initramfs to /boot(arch kernel upgrade does this automatically)
then use efibootmgr to add entry for the kernel/initram

You can also use grub-eufi but you don't need to if your mobo built-in bootloader is ok and you're only booting a couple different kernels.

I know, that's what I love most about it. You just (carefully) write the command, hit enter, let stuff happen. It's a literal, low-level, byte-by-byte copy, so nothing to format/configure. And since you can run it in the terminal, you can still use your computer while it executes (like I was during a live USB session). I've read that Clonezilla and DBAN just run "dd" underneath the hood.

>>60186139

Yeah, I've read about this, hence me saying you can use it to wipe a partition/disk, too...intentionally or accidentally. It's a versatile tool, but definitely not a command to run on your first day in Linux.

I remember seeing this mentioned in different places, but depending on the DE it could be easier said than done.

I remember trying to find a way to run i3 in gnome, as in having the bar and activities menu and shit, but getting the windows organized by i3. Obviously that wasn't gonna happen, for a bunch of reasons, but instead you could run i3 with all the gnome goodness in the background. The only problem is I need that goodness in the foreground, if I'm not going to learn lots of new stuff in the case of every conceivable emergency.
What I'm really missing the most is having a bar at the edge of my screen that is clickable and able to fix all my most common problems. Am I just not finding the obvious way to make that happen?

>>
>>60190721
Hello there! You seem to have used the term "DRM-free".
This term is missing the point of Free software and therefore should be avoided. When I say "free software", I mean free as in freedom, not as in free beer. It's not about price!
Free software is software which grants its users the four essential software freedoms:
0. To run the program as the user wishes.
1. To study and modify the source code in order to understand what the program does and to make it do what the user wishes.
2. To help your neighbor by sharing exact copies of the free software.
3. To improve the software by sharing your modified versions.
The term DRM-free specifically mentions that this software is not protected by DRM technologies to prevent the user from circumventing restrictions imposed upon them by the license under which the software was published. However, begrudgingly tolerating the user's violation of unethical restrictions still does not make it okay for the software publisher to impose those restrictions upon their customers. I ask therefore that you stop using the term "DRM-free" and call software by the name it deserves: free software, when it was published under a license that respects the user's freedoms as described above, and proprietary software* when it wasn't. Please help improve the GNU/Linux community by demanding software publishers use freedom-respecting licenses and by rejecting proprietary software.

* malware or spyware would also be acceptable terms
>>
>>60190799

>>60190768
Confront them, show them a reasonably similar free font and ask if this will be acceptable. If they remain adamant, complain to their superiors. RMS has some essays about why it is unethical for educational institutions to use nonfree software, if you need arguments.
Alternatively, use a reasonably similar free font and hope the prof doesn't notice.

Im not sure theres a way to do that for certain characters like that specifically. I just use a font that renders them readably at 14pt.

What exactly are btrfs subvolumes?

Is it like a new partition I can mkfs into anything I like and then mount? How big is it? I don't seem to understand the concept quite well.

check it:

map <buffer> cl :exec 'w !sbcl --noinform' shellescape(@%, 1)<cr>

what this does, is when I'm writing into the buffer, i can just hit Esc and then type 'cl' (for common lisp) and it runs the code i have in the buffer into sbcl

you could do maps for python, ruby, w/e

map :!gcc -o poo % && ./poo to some combo

hmmm, that would be trickier just given all the flags that go into making things. this would be minimal and you've have to
map <buffer> gc :exec 'w !gcc -o $FILE -xc - ' shellescape(@%, 1)<cr>

maybe having a Makefile ready to go and just running make would be a better option?

Since you're obviously retarded and trying to do damage control by spouting more idiocy, here:
It's defining feature is the convenience to specify certain features which will be globally or in single instances applied to software at compile time, enabling or disabling features.

Kill yourself so you can stop wasting precious 4chan kilobytes.

Nice retarded reading comprehension, idiot.
Other distributions don't allow you to specify certain keywords which then automatically modify the build scripts enabling or disabling those features in a convenient way.
Why haven't you killed yourself yet?

How do you do cpu/gpu power management on Linux? On Windows you have a manager where you can set a maximum percentage of power that goes to them, that way both cpu and gpu will not overheat regardless of load.
>>
>>60197355
I think you can handle that in nvidia-settings with an nvidia GPU. Cannot answer the rest of your question or the AMD version, unfortunately. Maybe look into xfce4-power-manager, but it may only be for stuff like suspend on lid close and such.

I installed some linux distros in a virtual machine
they are kind of sluggish compared to my win10 host machine
I feel likethe most snappy so far is fedora 25 with wayland
I assigned 4 cores of my i7 4790 and 4gb ram to a machine and still feels slow
is it a linux thing or just slow because it's a virtual machine?
>>
>>60197654
Probably just a VM thing. I was amazed how frickin' fast and snappy my computer was after installing Linux. Literally every DE/Distribution has been faster than Windows.

I suspect it is so because that's the way it is on Plasma. I was hoping Debian might have some packages that support putting a cap on the power load. I guess I'll have to check the drivers.

tl;dr: What's a full proof way to run Windows software on Linux? Crossover, Wine, VM?

Hi, I'm currently a Windows 10 user. I've used Windows since I got my first PC. But, with the release of Windows 10 S, I realize that we're coming closer and closer to a Brave New World. I WANT to switch to Debian, but, I'm conflicted.

I am concerned about running modern steam games, and my PC software. That's it, that's all I want. I can gladly switch everything else over to Linux. So what should I do? Crossover, Wine, a VM, Dual boot, what?

Thank you.
>>

Is there any advantage to compiling a program from source as opposed to just getting it from a repository?
FYI I haven't the slightest idea what flags are, I just copy paste the commands from a github page.
>>

>Is there any advantage to compiling a program from source as opposed to just getting it from a repository?
Compiling from source is the best way to always have last version. And bonus: this is an unpatched version.

so what?

>>60197654
what is your idle cpu usage in the vm? if it is high then you are probably running with software rendering

You should probably just stick to Windows if you use a lot of Windows specific programs, like you say.
Wine works okay sometimes, but it's definitely not a complete solution.

I'm a Win7 newfig who tried installing Debian and found it to be way above my skill level. Is Ubuntu good for newbies, and can I install KDE 5.9 on it?
>>
>>60198944
The most simple to install is OpenBSD. You can choose default answer each time, and you'll have the most secured OS ever.
>>
>>60198944
Ubuntu asks about as much information for installation as windows 7 (well, less because it doesn't ask about windows update and a cdkey :^) )
>>
>>60197654
are you retarded?
you're running your main fucking OS with all its huge bloated memory requirements and any background programs or other shit you have up, and on top of that, you then run another OS in simulated hardware, with its own big desktop shit and background processes etc etc etc
Why the hell do you think its slow?
I know this isn't friendly but I knew what this was without anyone telling me when I was an illiterate winbabby trying opensuse in vmware. Its fucking obvious.
>>
>>60198944
Ubuntu is good to learn on. Provided you actually experiment and try to learn things, that is.
You can install kubuntu if you want kde, or if you want more up to date kde, kde neon.
>>
>>60194207
urxvt supports font fallback stacks. the best solution i can think of is to put a font with only cjk characters at the top of the stack, so that it will be chosen first for cjk. then you can choose the font settings independently
