Don't you have a buffer for times like these?

Quite a few reasons actually.
Nautilus:
> Out of my price range
> I feel like it suits older men than me
otherwise, I adore this watch.

the Royal Oak:
> The watch is "stands out" way too much for my taste
> It honestly became a meme in my country. All the "celebs" or wanna-be show offs either buy a fake royal oak or a genuine one. either way I feel like it lost its prestige here. I was considering buying the Ultra Thin but now I changed my mind.

Overall, The Overseas suits my needs & I really like the interchangeable bracelets.

Because that's the normal way for watches to do it, and was also common to see in ancient Rome.

It also divides the dial neatly into thirds. You have 4 numbers composed of only "I" 4 with a "V" and 4 with an "X."

Please help me! Is it normal for a Tissot Visodate automatic watch to gain 3 minutes in one week? I mean, once I brought my watch to the shop where I bought it and they told me that they checked the movements and that everything should be fine from then, but after a week or so I started noticing that my watch had gone 3 minutes earlier than the current time in my zone. Kuwait.
It's not only that it's a meme. The fact that almost everyone will recognise your watch and therefore immediately assume it is fake (because of my age & also the huge amount of fakes floating around) is a huge slap on the face for a watch enthusiast (and anyone honestly, since you're dropping 20k on that watch).

I blame hip hop & those rich instagram fag kids for ruining the brand. AP is slowly turning into Hublot with their meme limited editions, too.
>>

the royal oak is also nauseatingly ugly
>>
>>60129172
Audemars Nigguet has made their bed. Now they can lie in it. As far as I am considering concerned they should no longer be considered on the level of Patek, VC, ALS or JLC.
>>
>>60128514
Fortis is fine, they have nothing special going for them but if you like a design they're not bad watches.
>>
>>60129099
That is not normal. It should run withing about + or - 10 seconds a day, so one minute a week would be reasonable, but not 3. It's either magnetized or needs to be regulated. Any decent independent watchmaker should be able to do both.
>>
>>60128514
Fortis are just another brand shoving ETA movements into outsourced cases. Only consider if the price is very good.

>& also the huge amount of fakes floating around)
There are that many fakes in Kuwait?
I would have assumed that fakes wouldn't really be a thing in those oil rich arab countries.
>I blame hip hop & those rich instagram fag kids for ruining the brand. AP is slowly turning into Hublot with their meme limited editions, too.
This is a worry; they're already a one trick pony and pretty much all their other stuff is boring ass shit.

But I guess at least it had something, one thing that was iconic, even if they've milked that dry so hard that the nipple's inverted and now actively sucking IN milk.

Out of the old swiss trinity, VC as a brand as a whole just hasn't got that iconic thing that makes them them. Sure they have some nice pieces, and I keep looking at their patrimony traditionelle (rose gold, small seconds at 6) for a nice hand wound dress watch because not only does it just look nicer than the equivalent patek, but the movement's technically better too and not tiny itsy bitsy (PP 5196's 215 girly girl movement).

But the fact that they're owned by the Richemont, the great whore, really puts me off.

At least AP and PP are still "independent", for what it's worth. And at least I wouldn't have to subject myself to the arduous process that is richemont "service". They like selling you new shit but don't like maintaining the old.

They cheapout in most countries and have one (fucking one) service center that handles all their brands, sending off complicated pieces to switzerland.

I don't like that. Puts me off the other obvious contender, Lange, as well, though there seem to be far fewer horror stories.

Decisions, decisions.

> I would have assumed that fakes wouldn't really be a thing in those oil rich arab countries.
That is the case ONLY in Qatar (very small population and most of them are stupid = pay a lot for doing almost nothing).
The only people who are rich because of oil money in my country are the people who literally steal oil/oil money (i.e. very high-ranking families & some individuals from the royal family). Otherwise, the population is pretty much like any other country.
But Kuwaitis like to stunt a lot. You see the streets full of Mercedes Benz, Audi, BMW, Porche cars. How is that possible? Most people take out loans to buy this expensive shit.

Anyway, I don't care much about the servicing since I intend on selling the watch in a few years and buying something else.

Every row is a variation of square / circle / triangle, order doesn't matter.

The second row is each figure from the top row mirrored down the middle.

The bottom row is the middle row with one side (doesn't matter which side) returned to the position from the first row.

So it's either bottom right, or the fully mirrored image of bottom right.
Since the latter isn't an option, it's bottom right.

Yes they have, and that is great for the art an science of horology overall, however the brand itself is still just floating around with no real vision except "try to sell more to the chinese", which isn't exactly an unique trait in itself.

DESU I tend to gloss over all these grand complication types these days, unless it's something truly marvelous. They all sorta blur into one, with some exceptions. It's all well and good for a company to have innovation in their lofty, experimental line, but it's their functional pieces that actually sell and it's those pieces that reinforce the brand's identity, and as far as identity goes VC just draws a blank.

Run through the various makers out there, big and small and something, whether it be some defining shared mechanical innovation, a unified design philosophy, or even one or two defining models or traits, will immediately pop into mind.

They can lay claim to being the oldest surviving watchmaking house, but that's about it.
With them being owned by a mass luxury goods conglomerate, I fear that they will not get the freedom they need to truly shine, although Richemont has been infinitely better at this compared to Swatch, whose stranglehold and micromanagement strictly reinforces the arbitrary divisions between their various brands (ie. lower longines into the sewer and keep it there and fluff omega up far beyond its worth etc.).

I want to like the brand.

I like that Vacheron keeps with the Crusader themes. The regular Patrimony is always going to be in tough competition with the Patek Calatrava. I would focus on some of their unique offerings like the Malte or Historique collection.

The Overseas line has a lot of potential too as the Royal Oak is gaudy, and most Nautilus' kind of suck and don't feel properly "Patek-y" or look very nice. If they tried making the Overseas as basically a Haute Horology Rolex alternative they could kick ass as a lot of guys don't want to be another fuckhead with a steel sports Rolex but nearly everyone else selling watches in that pricepoint (including JLC) don't have anything exactly spectacular.

A "good" watch according to /wt/ is one that is interesting, this can be interesting aesthetic designs (Note, interesting does not mean dogshit hideous, but genuinely nice and otherwise thoughtful design), inhouse movements are always cool, which is why Orient is held in such high esteem here especially.
Other good cheapo mechanicals are ones that you can just have fun modding to fuck. Like Vostoks. They're also great learner watches as you can buy whole movements and even replacement parts from Meramon.

SWATCH is as generic as you can get, they're a corporation based around the unification of product lines into one cheap assembly. That's not to say they don't have good cheap watches though.

Not bad, but should have stuck with needle hands. After the war the Soviets took a huge chunk of the industry (and the designers working in them) of the eastern part of Germany as reparations. Simson, Zeiss, military factories etc. all had their shit taken by the USSR, so I wouldn't be surprised they found the plans for some Stowa Antea-style watch in some Glashütte factory and decided to "borrow" the aesthetic design.

One of the coolest things I saw at the "House of German History" museum or whatever the fuck it's called in Bonn (Haus der Geschichte?) was an old lens grinding machine by Zeiss.

Thing looked like it weighed 2 tonnes. Anyway, the little plaque noted that the machine was hauled off by the soviets just after the war and was not seen again until the fall of the soviet union.

The thing was STILL being used in some factory on the outskirts of Moscow in 1994.

Jerry made good shit back then; everybody wanted a piece, whether it was nuclear physicists or flush lavatories.

I do see your point on the lack of a brand identity for VC, I'm not sure I would identify a unifying aesthetic to PPs either.

I would think that the freedom VC has had to explore grand complications would seem to indicate that Richemont at least understands well enough that VC has to be given the funding and freedom to re-establish its bonafides at the highest levels of hatue horlogerie, the issue to me seems to be more of a struggle to translate the aesthetics of those halo watches into the rest of their line-up

All of that being said, by personal preference I would take JLC over PP, VC or ALS any day of the week.

Depends on the condition and dial type. $400 for a good condition linen dial 5740C is a steal at this point, for a non-linen dial 5740C in a very good condition its fair.

I'm well aware, hence the joke. Honestly, given what I know of Daini Seikosha's design culture, I'm pretty surprised they became the first watchmaker to adopt a MEMS approach to making balance wheels.

Daini Seikosha always tended to stodgy traditionalism in its design choices, and just used gratuitous amounts of inspection, finishing and adjustment labour to get the desired results.

I'm actually quite concerned that Grand Seiko will end up wasting the huge technological head-start they have over everyone else in the application of MEMS manufacturing methods to movements due to that culture of conservatism in design.

Is there a cheap version of this watch? I really like the emerald green canvas, stainless steel finish, don't care so much about the band.

I know nothing about watches, first time posting in this thread, this watch really struck me.

Only one I can think of with weeb numerals is the Nomos Toki. Good luck finding one though.

You can find ones both modern and vintage with kanji for the dates. Jap watches will use the elements + sun/moon, as that is how they do days of the week. I'd say look at the lord matic SPECIAL line for vintage, or something like SARY055 for modern.

You can also dig up japanese watches with chinese date wheels, which basically have numbers instead of elements and shit. You can only get those in singapore or some shit though.

>I'm not sure I would identify a unifying aesthetic to PPs either.
Doesn't necessarily have to be a unifying aesthetic, and whatever PP had has been copied from others and by others from them so much that they do feel somehow generic. I can't help but feel the 5196, by virtue of lineage is really the quintessential dress watch.

Nevertheless, they have their Calatrava line. When people (when talking people, I mean people how actually know that there's watches costlier than rolex) think PP, they usually have some vague calatrava pop up in mind.

Nowadays they also have that oh so overplayed nautilus as well that will be familiar with certain demographics. But generally, if you were to ask people what came to mind when they hear the name "Patek Philippe" it will 9/10 be a gold dress watch on a leather strap. It's certainly not a unique thing to them, but it's an association that is cemented. With VC you're got to think a little harder.

>the issue to me seems to be more of a struggle to translate the aesthetics of those halo watches into the rest of their line-up
Yeah, pretty much. We'll see how they go over the next decade.

Richemont just shuffled all the CEO's of all its top watch brands earlier this year, or maybe late last year, likely in response to slow sales. The only richemont company that was spared the reshuffle was the Lange manager, implying that they seem to be doing something right in the HQ's eyes (and really, they are IMO).

>>60135951
>All of that being said, by personal preference I would take JLC

JLC's a brand I really want to love; they're too horologically important, now and historically, to not be. However, the same hangups for me as with VC (and ALS):
Owned by Richemont; horrible service.

I have friends with JLC's (and IWC's) and their experiences when dealing with repairs makes me very nervous about picking up shit I would really want, like pic related, unless I could put it in for service in Switzerland direct, but I don't find myself in that part of the world very often anymore. Only way seems to be to take it direct to ensure minimal dumbfuckery.

Bro in law ended up having to take his shitty IWC for service in Shaffhausen in person before a proper job could be done.

There's too much repair nonsense going on that a complicated watch, especially from this group, gives me great pause.

In my country, Rolex and PP have superb service centres. Richemont group has a long way before they're well regarded enough to even think about drawing away customers from those two.

That is extremely disappointing to hear, and, looking into the horror stories about Richemont Group official service centers is actually quite enough to put me off ever even considering a JLC.

Is there really any limit to how short sighted and greedy these companies can be? Can they not make enough money without tarnishing their reputations bilking their customers for obviously unnecessary parts and repairs at exorbitant prices, like some shady local mechanic?

To get a trademark for a brand you need to file and get an application granted. Most likely "Quartz" will be rejected since it is descriptive,

Better then to get design protection for the face of your watch design.
>>
>>60141039
Yup.
All you have to do is trawl the usual suspect forums for JLC (pretty much every Richemont brand) routine service or QC and subsequent warranty service issues to not get put off.

Sure, every fuck brand has bad stories, but it really seems as if it's not as bad as the sorts of things you hear when people bitch about panerai and JLC for example.

Go to the WUS JLC forum and you'll find at least 5 threads on the first page about service or QC issues at any given time.

I was skimming the forums last week when I stumbled upon an older thread
http://forum.tz-uk.com/showthread.php?297824-Opinions-please-more-poor-Richemont-service-(JLC)
where one guy pretty much hit the nail on the head: JLC were treating their customer with utter fucking contempt. Quick to want to sell new shit, but oh if you have any issues with the stuff you've already bought, sorry, not a priority.

Say what you want about Rolex service fuckery, but they have that shit pretty much down pat: have a new, not-rare, not special snowfrake rolex? Take it to the RSC to be sure; don't have to worry with certified independents, the official SC will handle that shit fine. And you can find one in pretty much any place in the world worth actually being in (and I'm sure there are some RSC's in fucking subsaharan africa ffs).

Richierich group? ONE FUCKING WATCHMAKER handles all their brands, at least in some regions, causing backlog, corner cutting and other shenanigans.

Like I keep saying, I want to like this stuff, and I have the means to make the choice, but it's made harder by the fact that I don't want the potential headache and would rather not be treated with such contempt, as so many others have been (if it is allowed to happen to others, it can happen to me).
>>
>>60139768
>That watch is both boring and interesting at the same time somehow..
Kinda why I like it.
The plain, non-moonphase model is boring as fuck; the addition of the moonphase makes an otherwise dull watch type (traditional dresswatch) at little more interesting and enticing and would make it more likely that I would wear it when not in a suit.

You mean (until a few years ago) literally STEALING your property if you had the gall to send it across international borders?

Seeing what kinds of fuckery watch companies will stoop to basically put me off watch collecting, I was once like you guys until I ended up with a vintage Rolex and got deep into the forums and learned more.
