Avoid the T440. Starting from that model, T4XX models use ULVs. Instead, opt for the p of each generation (except T450, which had none).

So the progression goes T400 -> T410 -> T420 -> T430 -> T440p -> T460p -> T470p

>>
I've heard that you need hardware to remove the WiFi whitelist on the Xxx0 starting from Xx30. What hardware is it?
>>
>>60101615
>>60101685
T440p has the following upgrades:

- Shit Touchpad to Good Touchpad
- CPU, up to MX models.
- 100Wh Battery with the 9-cell

You're stuck with the new keyboard if that matters, and no ThinkLight. WLAN cards can be installed by downgrading the BIOS between 2.32 - 2.36. A bug disables the whitelist in those versions.
>>
>>60101726
SPI Flasher with a solderless clip. This is only on the xx30. They removed it in xx50 and xx40 BIOSes have a bug that ignores the whitelist.
>>
>>60101754
err, to be more specific, only the xx30 requires hardware. The others have software flashes or other workarounds.
>>
>>60101788
Is it dangerous? I read on the last thread that it could fry your beloved ThinkPad, and if that's true then it's now that worth it...
>>
>>60101970
Ignore the shill, he's been trolling ThinkPad enthusiasts all day.

It's possible to fry it, yes, but not by chance. You have to fuck up flashing it by being negligent.
>>
T470 is the best thinkpad since the T400, sturdy build, long battery life, responsive keyboard, the only downside is color reproduction
>>
>>60102014
Ok, so, what's the process and required materials?

I'm getting a T530 next week (i5 3210M, 4GB Ram, 500GB HDD) and I might use this later on.
>>
>>60102028
The T470 has nothing to do with the T400. There's no equivalent to it before the T440. Unless you mean the T470p, in which case, how is it any different from the T440p?
>>
Anybody who doesn't have a T470 in the current year is an idiot. It's the perfect laptop in every way

I think this should probably be in the stupid question thread, fell free to call me on this.

So my thinkpad's battery is dying and:
a) Can I replace a battery with different Part Number for the same model?

Recommended WLAN cards for the T420/T430?
>>
>>60101077
I need help. I cannot find an answer anywhere

I bought a Lenovo Yoga S1 for $50 and the only thing that needed to be replaced was the video cable

got it replaced and I put in the battery and HDD and I plug in the AC and light blinks 3 times

I unplugged the CMOS battery and plugged in power (without the laptop battery
it blinked 3 times, then the keyboard illuminated, and there is an orange light on one key red light on thinkpad logo and green light on another key.

I plugged in HDD when this occured and HDD spins on, I tried to turn on the laptop and it simply wont turn on, CPU fan wont spin etc.

Im at a fucking loss

1. CMOS unplugged, battery unplugged, AC power plugged in - blinks 3 times then thinkpad light stays on red, green light turns on and ornage light turns on and PC runs but no display, HDD is spinning and CPU fan does not spin even though its all plugged in and getting really warm really fast

2. I push emergency reset button plug in CMOS and then it blinks 3 times then the keyboard illuminates once, fades out, then the same green/red/orange lights stay on and i have to push emergency reset button because its "on" but is warm and CPU fan doesnt spin

this is some bullshit

>>
>>60102353
Yeah, not sure fan spins right away when the lights turn on

It sometimes reach BIOS but its not showing a backlight and fn + backlight key doesnt do anything. Maybe its some sensor that activates backlight not functioning correctly?

also everytime i plug in a battery and plug in AC power it blinks 3 times and doesnt power but when I take out battery, take out cmos, plug in AC power, then plug in cmos, put in AC power it works without the battery

in all this, the power button doesnt work

should I say fuck it and send it to some laptop technician and get a quote on what is wrong with it or just put it to the side

>The small cooling fan in our test unit starts running under the smallest load, but at least it is off when the device is idle. In that respect, the X270 is one of the more annoying devices because the fan runs so often - probably because of its small size. In comparison to other laptops with U CPUs, the cooling fan is almost overpoweringly loud under maximum load.

Two questions.

1. Every source I've consulted gives conflicting information. Can I, or can I not, flash bios from software on an X220? A proper guide would be fantastic.

2. Should I limit how much the battery can get charged or something like that? Will it improve its lifetime or is it a meme? Is it even worth bothering if I'm using a stock from whenever my 220 was made that gives me like 4-5 hours on low screen brightness?

Which supplier makes the best xx20 series keyboards? I know that there's 3 suppliers for Lenovo's keyboards; Chicony, ALPS and NBM. Which one of them is the best and what's their specific FRU code?
>>

It takes standard 2.5" laptop drives. Which T60p model do you have? If it's 15" 4:3 (square screen, ~1 inch keyboard bezel), you can get a sacrificial 14" 4:3 T61 and use it to assemble T601F bestpad.

Because Canada sucks big, massive, black balls, Lenovo doesn't carry the T470 with 1920x1080 screen, only the 1366x768.

>>
>>60106158
Depends on what you use it for. 4GB is sufficient for most average use (Office, light gaming, web browsing, video playback at 720p maybe), but if possible, do upgrade it. It helps you on the long run.
>>
>>60107091
>>60106158
Welp, looks like I don't know shit about the T60p. Seems like 4GB is the max size but it's still good and you find DDR2 for cheap change in eBay or your local selling sites.

Even so, it would seem that the max you can get out of it is 3GB, but given you chose a T60p you should be fine.

You plan to run loonix, right?
>>
Yeah. I do. Will the t60p support modern linux?
>>
>>60107242
Given the max amount of RAM, you could try to downgrade to 32bit, but try 64bit first and then 32bit so you can tell if there's a noticeable difference in performance.

Also, what distro/flavor? Ubuntu is entry-level, but if you're experienced you might like Debian or Gentoo (unironically) if you ever get it to install and run.
>>
>>60107275
Alright, and i am also wondering, how difficult is it to possibly make th t601f instead of vanilla? And would it be worth it?
>>
>>60103967
Take it apart, replace the speaker. If it's anything like a T430, it should be pretty easy once you find a replacement.
>>
>>60107329
Where could I find speakers? Opening it up isn't a problem for me, but I'm not sure where I could find replacement speakers. I could probably nigger rig something together but I'm not too sure how well it work work.
>>
>>60107379
Search on eBay for either speakers or a broken down T410 with at least one working speaker. Then you use it to fix your T410
>>
>>60107379
what do you mean where? at least ask how does one find the part number of the speakers first.

i think once you at least google the part number, ebay MIGHT just show up as one of the links.

i swear, you mother fuckers in these threads are as bright as a fucking black hole
>>
>>60107074
yes, both are still good. consider that the base i5-2520m in an x220 ($150ish) is still 20% faster than a 2016 macbook ($1300).

as for x220 vs x230, they're both fairly comparable. just get whatever's cheapest on ebay that day unless you just gotta have whatever minute differentiating feature between the two which the dorks on here keep endlessly slapfighting about.

only other real option in this size and price range is the hp 2560p or 2570p. some neat features over the x2x0s in that they have socketed cpus and dvd drives that can be replaced with disk bays like larger thinkpads, but you're stuck with a shit tn panel with no aftermarket ips upgrades at all

Well fuck. All I want is an chunky, durable machine with enough under the hood for 6th gen emulation and preferably a 9-cell or 12-cell battery and some degree of modularity. I don't really even give a shit about having a good GPU as long as it's not integrated-only.

From what I've gathered over the last couple days of googling my choices are basically to gamble on a used """gaming""" laptop that I can actually afford (like a Y510p) and then spend another $100 upgrading the battery or sell my ass until I have enough money to buy a new higher-end laptop.

halp,

i wrote a couple of threads ago - got a free display from work (DELL dvi) and want to add it to my t430s + dock. Currently there's another display hooked via VGA (BENQ), but i can use only 2 of the three connected displays (vga, dvi, laptop screen). Windows for some reason thinks there are 5 displays hooked onto it ?!

Anybody done something similar ? I can use just the two external ones, but would be cool if i could also use the laptop's for side information.
Any input appreciated, thx

for the plus dock or whatever it's called, the one with 2x displayport and 2x dvi, you can't use the two dvi or the two dp at the same time

that might be your problem

also I think the integrated graphics are only capable of powering 2x monitors and I have a feeling Nvidia Optimus (which allows you to switch between intel/nvidia graphics) might be fucked on Windows 10

try turning off the integrated graphics in the BIOS or turning on discrete graphics or whatever the option is

Boys, if I want to maximise the single-thread performance of my thinkpad would I get an i7-3540M or i7-3840QM? The 3540M is a 3/3.7 chip while the 3840QM is 2.8/3.8. The 3840QM has a 100mhz higher boost clock, but I figured that the 3540M might be a much more consistent serial performer since it's a dual core chip and won't be as susceptible to throttling as the 3840QM.

The trackpad isn't shit though. When I received my new X230 the trackpad was a fucking mess. Very erratic movement, no precision, input lag, lurching, failure to register touches. >>
>>60117839
It's too small, it's not even "real" (it's a part of the palmrest before xx40 series), and for some people the texture is terrible. I don't care about any of those things since I rarely use it over a trackpoint, but the point stands.

I wouldn't want a bigger trackpad for the size of this machine. It works fine as it is. I don't need the 15" 2016 MBP's kitchen worktop sized trackpad. Being able to move the cursor corner to corner in 2 strokes while having accuracy for normal pointing is great. The trackpad is also a separate assembly, it is replaceable if needed and the texture can be covered or taken off and replaced with something smooth. Its better than the smooth texture I had on my last laptop though which would sand my fingertips.

>>
>>60117989

Two finger scrolling is the only thing I left on. That is the only gesture I left. To clarify, I don't use the trackpoint much. I said chiral scrolling is bullshit, two finger scrolling is great. Making all clicks also default to left click while two finger click is middle mouse button action and the only proper right click is via trackpoint's right click.

What would you use USB 3 for anyways?

I think normies only use it for external drives, but you could use a caddy instead.

seconding to not bother with expresscard USB3.0

you are also gimped by the ExpressCard slot's bandwidth, you get less than half USB3.0 speed

i5 is the better value imo. i7 is ~10% faster but it costs like 30% more in many cases. It is up to you if you think it's worth it.

I got the i5 one for $110.

In that case the only difference would be a clock speed bump and some extra cache. According to Intel's comparisons page.

Thought about installing FreeBSD on my laptop too, but decided on CRUX, since I'm already familiar with that distro. I've been lazy about configuring everything tho. Just have the basics installed, but everything important works (except for hibernate, the system is a bit fucked after waking up. Suspend/sleep works great tho).

I would've been done configuring this machine a long time ago if I had just gone with a distribution or OS focused more on desktop and workstation use. Even basic stuff like what the computer should do when the battery life runs low is a bit of a pain. I probably would've gone with a less fiddly distro if I had a real job.

Get ready for a special kind of hell with FreeBSD, or any BSD. Few hours later and I got xdm going but it won't log me in. What is crux like? What is it based off of?
>>
>>60121948
CRUX isn't based on anything. It is based on sysvinit, and will probably stick with that until it is impossible not to use systemd. It also has very few maintainers, so there aren't that many packages/ports available, so it is expected of you to make a lot of your own or use community maintained ones. It's not a rolling distro, so major updates that are expected to break things usually come with a whole new ISO.

I hear people say Arch was based on or inspired by CRUX, but I don't know if there is any truth to that. Arch's pkgbuilds is somewhat similar to CRUX's pkgfiles. I think a lot of people copy a lot from Arch when they make their own ports.

I'd ask if you want a housefire, but the difference in TDP is 10W.
Can it handle it well? Does it have a significant increase in temperatures?
>>
>>60124164
Yes, but I think the majority of it is because I haven't applied new thermal paste yet. I literally used the paste that was left on the processor, which is a god awful idea. I hit 100C on boot and am now getting ~50C just browsing the web. Was getting ~45C before. That's not bad overall IMO given the lack of paste, but once I apply new paste and install the new heatsink that's coming Monday (dGPU heatsink on iGPU model) it should be *significantly* cooler. It's running on a very unsafe setup currently.

X230 imo, 768p isn't as bad as most people say on such a small display. Imo the smaller footprint is a lot more convinient having owned 400 and 500 series thinkpads, if you actually travel with it.

>>
>>60125450
nah, they are really good quality notebooks.

Do they have the same level of quality as the bricks of the past? Of course they don't, but not because they cheap out, but because it''s impossible with ultrabook specifications.

They do still really feel very well and I haven't seen anything in that form-factor doing any better.

TL:DR don't pretend to need 90s quality when you are just too poor to get something current. because that's just bullshit.

I have been wondering, should I get a better cpu for my T61? From what I know, I could possibly install
T8100 (2.10 GHz, 3M Cache)
T8300 (2.40 GHz, 3M Cache)
T9300 (2.50 GHz, 6M Cache)
T9500 (2.60 GHz, 6M Cache)
Core 2 Extreme
X7800 (2.60 GHz, 4M Cache)
X7900 (2.80 GHz, 4M Cache)
X9000 (2.80 GHz, 6M Cache)
And with 8gb ram and two HDD, this seems like one badass machine. Not interested on getting a higher resolution screen for this (if I manage to get one for real cheap, then maybe) otherwise no. I think it would also require T500 heatsink?

How many kinds of W530 motherboard is there? I thought there was just 2 variants, the one with K1000M and the one with the K2000M GPU. Is there some other optional shit with other motherboards?
>>
>>60125563
T9300 has the best price/performance ratio. The T500 fan isn't necessary but I would highly recommend it, especially if you've got a dGPU model.
>>
>>60127031
Alrighty, yeah this does not have dGPU (have been avoiding laptops with dGPU).
I don't think I'll be finding any of those 4GB DDR2 SDRAM any time soon. One of those sticks cost 60$ in aliexpress. Holy shit.
>>
>>60126973
If it's anything like the W520 there will be 6 or more variants. In addition to the GPU options there's also the motherboards that came with quadcore CPUs and have four RAM slots, while the dualcore models only had two. I think there's also some optional security module that's only present on some motherboards, creating more variants. W series motherboard hunting is a real pain in the ass.

I just won an auction for a 2.5 GHz Core i5 X220 with an IPS panel, 250 GB SSD, 8 GB RAM and a replacement keyboard for ¥54,100 ($~485). Seller noted a 2mm crack in the bottom part of the palm rest that they repaired.

My friend wants to trade his X41 tablet with my netbook that I don't use, seeing as I'm more of a drawfag and he wants something with proper resolution to watch movies on

Should I trade my Asus Eee PC 1201HA with broken keyboard and a terribly repaired charger for Thinkpad X41 with no stylus, battery and a charger?

On one side, X41 is super outdated (Pentium M), comes with basic Intel graphic accelerator, non-expandable RAM over 2GBs and is probably gonna burst into flames if I try to watch a HD video on it.

But on the other side, it's a thinkpad, I can use a wacom stylus with it, and the Eee PC has terrible Linux support because of Nvidia Ion graphics
