Well, at least it was like that on my desktop compaq
You can still install windows on it without the BIOS and then create the floppies from there, maybe even install the program from windows itself, not sure
>>
>>60089075
I once couldn't configure a bigger hard drive, because the setup utility didn't auto detect the heads and cylinders, even though the drive actually worked fine with the BIOS itself fine, it was just the utility that wasn't programmed to support those sizes, worse, the utility didn't even support those sizes I wanted to enter manually, the only way I could finally get it to work was to enter one value and restart then go back and enter another, else it would change the previously manually entered value, real mindfuck.
>>

>>
>>60089204
A drive overlay software might work though even with wrong values in the BIOS, also, if the BIOS battery is OK, then you only would have to do it once, anyways, it might have been just a problem with the setup utility for my particular model of machine

You're going to need a new computer to put it in as well. Last computer I had that supported a 5 1/4" floppy drive was one I built in 2005. Any computer I had after that date didn't support 5 1/4" floppy drives in the BIOS, only 3 1/2" floppy drives (my last build also only support a single floppy drive instead of 2).

How about this...
Many of those features...

Make spare USB modules for them, they plug into one of the (Four, full size) USB ports on the device. Now you hurt the profits of the chinaman since these things work for other devices too.

Also the cell phone is a radio technically right? Why should it only be able to communicate at the same frequency as the cell towers?

Use it for AM/FM as well.
> leave it hackable so it can be used to scan any variety of frequencies, just dont support this officially

> Flip Out Keyboard
discarded

laser keyboard, now you just type on your desk or table.

>floppy drive
unless you're speaking of Superdisk
no just kidding

however a regular size SD card slot would be perfect, with forwards compatability to whatever end of SD density they might accomplish.

also none of this OTG micro-usb shit, those (four) usb ports need to take devices

> AC power
make it capable of taking high end laptop power supply (65W?), and then attach lower end plug adapters

no these adapters dont just fall off the bottom, they screw in, and allow using anything from mini usb, micro usb, lightning cable, or even the common laptop charger cords

no I dont think the apple spatula should be used, because fuck that

> if its lower power, that just means it takes longer to charge, this way you fuck the charger companies since someone can just plug their laptop cord into it

If I may add...

It can be a little thicc but I demand that thickness put its ass to work for something.

An 8,000-12,000mah battery standard. Kinda like the cheero. If that fucker only costs $30 then it should be IN a phone.

I dont care if my phone weighs 3 pounds. Handguns are about that size and weight anyway.

Laptop PATA drives use smaller headers that won't fit a desktop PATA cable. You need this or a pin adapter.
>>
>>60090756
There's not much you can do then, unless you connect the CD ROM drive and it manages to boot from it or at least access it with the driver that's apparently already on your hard drive, you could write CDs to transfer data to it or install a new OS. If you had floppies and another drive you could do more also, right now your best possible choice actually is getting the hard drive itself connected to another machine and doing an install on it that way.

>>60090538
you're right it is not a full dos installation, you could get it online but getting it on a boot up floppy or other media for that comp might be tricky

"edit" is a text utility much like notepad which came with ms-dos, without it you cant do much of anything

dos commands:
cd = change folder (which is called a directory). If you type two dots .. it goes to the root folder above the current one.

drive letter and colon = go to another drive, such as c: means go to c drive

dir = show directory
dir /? = show help options for directory command
rename (switches and files) = rename stuff

> MSCDEX
The basic dos driver for a cd rom drive.
Im not sure but it may have to be loaded from Autoexec.bat as the computer is booting up, along with proper switches.

You may be able to simply Run this program so it becomes a TSR, its worth a try. But most likely you will have to have it loaded from boot.

By the way I also believe Config.sys is like Autoexec.bat it just loads a different series of files and TSRs on bootup. I think its in plain text format like a batch file.

I just used EDIT in the dos days.

When windows came out I started using Wordpad and Notepad. And also MS Works. But I believe these were also in windows 3.1 in some limited fashion, however I still used EDIT because it was quick and easy.

I still use wordpad to be honest... it loads much faster than word does and it supports fonts, and generally does what I need it to unless I need the heavy lifting.
>>
>>60091009
There are a lot of awesome editors for DOS, but usually I just keep to edit unless I already replaced it with something more powerful, MS edit itself is pretty okay too
>>
>>60090942
I mean ive got no problem with a feature rich easily navigable GUI for the bios.

But the bios itself should be hunkered down basic and dependable like all the others. And there's nothing saying they couldn't have had a spare chip with the gui on it since (I mean a fucking super nintendo cartridge could hold at least 4mb of data)

>>60091024
yeah I mean the thing is in dos you're only going to be seeing 1 font and thats it, any font selection is only going to affect what gets sent to a printer, there really isnt too much dynamic flexibility to a word processor at that level, its all basic stuff

maybe a little more functionality than notepad but we're talking about the same thing pretty much

the funky thing is I wrote homework in 'edit back in the 90s because I was 11 when we got our first computer ('93)

I think corel wordperfect was another one of those programs that had an early start too but my family never got any of the corel stuff.

Ironically I did use edit in the early '00s to modify mod files for a doom sourceport called EDGE (they were .ddf files). Because notepad was technically less capable in some ways and I wanted to change screen colors to make it easier to see things.
>>
>>60091115
>And there's nothing saying they couldn't have had a spare chip with the gui on it since
Cost.

We do have graphical BIOSes now with mouse support and more, all on flash.
>>
>>60090675
I'm pretty sure that was one of the floor standing servers, and not a desktop model. They're fun, but loud as fuck. I hope you have a basement to run it in!

Also, NetBSD and OpenBSD ran really well on the spark machines I used to have. And they installed super easy as well. Just in case you run into issues with FBSD.
>>
>>60091146
>cost
even in those days the chips (eeprom?) would have cost like 5 bucks

the N64 carts held alot more and those were only about 10-15 bucks to make I believe, and we're talking about the days after SNES was kaput.
>>
>>60091179
Yet they choose that over doing it with a dedicated ROM like most manufacturers did with just a simple BIOS

Paradoxically, there were 125,000+ Osborne 1's made, but they got for $1000+. Meanwhile the Executives, which only clocked up about 20,000 units before Osbourne went belly up, are significantly cheaper, despite a bigger screen, more RAM, and greater scarcity. Go figure.

I didn't find it. I happened to mention to my dad that I was looking for a scope and he asked one of his old colleagues at an electronics company if they had some old scopes they were selling off. Usually they sell them to anyone interested as far as he knew, but apparently this dude just wanted to give it to me for free. Which was a very nice surprise.
I think companies that are selling (or throwing out) old equipment are usually a good bet for getting this stuff on the cheap. I've heard of americans dumpster diving and finding amazing treasures, but I don't think that's a thing here in yurop.

Electronic waste depots my man. I've seen all kinds of functional stuff from blenders and CRT monitors to signal analyzers and a metric asston basically anything computer related, most notably a fucking blade server loaded to the gills with Nehalems. why does old tech last so long in terms of deterioration?
I find used equipment that's 20-30 years old and I can often times boot it just fine, but modern stuff only has a 1-3 year warranty usually and you often have to make use of it.

Quantum's a pretty common SCSI maker anyway, is there something wrong with the NEC drive that's already in that thing? It looks like a pretty nice system, whatever it is.
>>60102969
Like in what way? I don't think you can expect people to be innately knowledgeable about this kind of equipment, at least if we're talking about things like erroneous dating and showing off things as higher-end than they really were as a new product.
>>
>>60103185
Indeed, they are pretty good drives too, but a little Apple logo on the drive, inside a Wintel shitbox, sounds just wrong.
There's nothing really wrong with the old drive as I can tell, it might be more noisy then it should at times and it's only 40MB and slow, even the old Quantum drive is several times bigger and faster.
It's a 386 system made by Nokia >>60054521

Those kinds of drives are usually pretty loud, and for me it's half the fun. Feels like a real machine. 40MB isn't really super terrible either for a system of that class, but I guess it depends what you've got and what you want to do, it's always been easier for me to use smaller drives since I've got a lot of different systems I can spread out applications over.

I share your aversion though, if it were my box I'd just keep it in there in the mean time while I search around for an external SCSI enclosure and shove it in there down the road, that I could keep it stock and enjoy it as it was as a brand new product. But still, you can always tell yourself it was an upgrade someone shoved in there after a friend/relative's Mac died or something. A little autism goes a long way.

From time to time it did a squeaky sound I'm pretty sure it shouldn't do, probably from the platter bearing.
The current Quantum drive is still nicely audible, just less distracting.

>40MB isn't really super terrible either for a system of that class, but I guess it depends what you've got and what you want to do, it's always been easier for me to use smaller drives since I've got a lot of different systems I can spread out applications over.
Yeah, I just choose to keep all the shit I need always on it, specially games and media. I'm not planning to have a fleet of those machine either.

>I share your aversion though, if it were my box I'd just keep it in there in the mean time while I search around for an external SCSI enclosure and shove it in there down the road, that I could keep it stock and enjoy it as it was as a brand new product. I prefer usability over originality mostly, retailers probably sold those machines with different upgrades anyways as it was custom to most of the wintel stuff back then.
The Quantum is from my Quadra 650 which drive I replaced with a 22GB 15K RPM with ridiculous amount of cache, wish I would have gotten more of those drives through as the seller had several, wouldn't even mind one of them in it if the controller recognizes at least some of it, that one really sounds like a jet taking off when turning it on.

Those weirdo SBC-on-backplane designs seem more common than you'd expect in my experience. And now that I'm googling around that drive seems surprisingly small, most 386DX/25s at least stateside seemed to be shipping with minimum 80-100MB disks by 1990, and the wiki page for those systems lists the 40MB option as ATA-only, weird.

If the drive's shitting out, I wouldn't regret replacing it then, I'd always keep it as a spare or even try to fix it though, it's getting damn hard to find anything SCSI (or even ATA) from that era.

Well, it was a system made by Nokia, wiki pages does say it has a SCSI option for 200MB and 400MB, but does not specify if the 40MB and 100MB models where ATA only, most likely both as this machine did have 40MB SCSI.
But it's also not the cheapest model of the system, because it has SuperVGA, cheaper ones had just VGA.

Kind of. We were friends with benefits until she got a gf. Then her gf brainwashed her completely and turned her into a full-on feminazi. It's a shame, she was pretty talented, but just ended up smoking weed and being a cunt. She also cheated on her gf with a guy.

Glad that's all over, my life went to complete shit over that period. Now I'm sorting my shit out, I'm managing to get some money by repairing stuff from people in my environment. Thing is, I got a proper loving gf now, but she's 400km away. So I spend all the money I make on trips to see her. That means no useless junk to make videos about.

Pic was my main laptop up until about three months ago, when I got a cheap Latitude E4300.

Not exactly true. The CPC464 was was a pure consumer machine and meant to compete the C64. Samsung made mobile phones since 1985, IMHO the first touchscreen smartphone was the omnia. It released in 2008. This means, it was in development long before the iPhone came out.
But yeah, the conclusion seems correct.

I've thought about trying to make a "truly portable" XBOX One S, in a suitcase like that.

It would have to be the S because of its size, but I would have to use memory foam cutouts to protect it. I would need a small TV and a 1outlet to 2outlet converter.

I would need to make a compartment behind the TV for storing discs if they're not downloaded (hinge the TV to the side of the suitcase so it swings open like a door), and cut a hole out of the front of the suitcase for the disc slot.

I would need to store the controllers in a mesh zipper bag to carry controllers and headphones in.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_pen
The tech's about as old as digital computing itself.
>>
>>60106050
>A light pen detects a change of brightness of nearby screen pixels when scanned by cathode ray tube electron beam and communicates the timing of this event to the computer. Since a CRT scans the entire screen one pixel at a time, the computer can keep track of the expected time of scanning various locations on screen by the beam and infer the pen's position from the latest timestamp.
Consider me educated.

Analogue tech had some cool tricks.

Because it's a waste of time that only produces a big block of awful, unmaintainable attribute spam shit you'll hate yourself for spawning every time you have to make changes. Been there, done that, old browsers are fucking trash.

>and not bloated shit css which isn't needed for a page like that in the first place, it's literally the "I'm a lazy dev, my time is more important than CPU time"
...nigger, do you even know what CSS is? It's not Javascript, it's just a bunch of rules in plaintext, it doesn't do dick. Hell, it's probably lighter on resources than the "old way" anyway, since you only have to define a rule once instead of re-implementing it every single time you use it.

I spent a good year trying to maintain a site that looked the same on Netscape 3.0.4 as it looked on the latest version of Firefox or Chrome or whatever the fuck, and all it does is gimp you. Nowadays I design something that maintains proper formatting with no CSS at all and then apply a stylesheet that primarily targets newer systems, with fallbacks for older browsers whenever possible, but in many cases, such as with Internet Explorer, that's never going to happen, and it's not worth it trying to make it so.
