Is there any way I can make my StinkPad let me use the keyboard and the trackpad at the same time? It's annoying as shit scrolling with the arrow keys and having to wait a second before I can move the mouse again.

What do? Is it possible that the customs can see wether it is a used notebook or not just by the box and x-rays? Heard they just x-ray the box and if they judge it as used, they confiscate it.

Looking for some upgrades to my x41t. Gonna get a 32gb 1.8" pata ssd and a new stylus
Any other suggestions? Anything cool I could put in the card bus 2 slot?

Slice battery is a no go, dock ports have some missing pins.

How do wireless headphones work under linux?

Are there any good thinkpads with native HDMI 1.4 (not through an adapter)?

I want to test out a bunch of tvs in store to see if any support 120 hz (http://www.blurbusters.com/overclock/120hz-pc-to-tv/), but it's not super practical to drag my gaming desktop around.

I already have 12 classicpads so you can skip the >modern thinkpad lecture. I just want something with a modern HDMI output and if it's going to be >$300 I'd rather it not be total garbage, hence thinkpad.

same applies to 2570p. In fact it allows you to flash custom ME image so you can overclock your CPU and RAM. Plus it has multiple cooling mods.
You can also replace the screen with better one if you got the money.

You can connect two 2,5" SSDs and get 1GBps speeds from two separate 6Gbps sata ports.
Try the same with any thinkpad. These don't even support RAID in BIOS.

Hi why the fuck Gnome does not recognize my T430's intel HD4000 while Xorg seems to do it well ?

I tried to remove xf86-video-intel because of this (https://www.reddit.com/r/archlinux/comments/4cojj9/it_is_probably_time_to_ditch_xf86videointel/ ) and everything seems to work fine except for Gnome 3 recognition.

Also I have this :
lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)

and this :

What does ME have to do with overclocking? I am guessing you're refering to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Active_Management_Technology

>>60029972
I would rather live with software RAID than rely on the shitfest that is hardware RAID.

I do like Elitebooks, I used to have one as well. They're well built, work great and are stupid easy to service. But it's quite undeniable that ThinkPads have more people hacking on them.
>>
>>60030088
Soldering is required in x230.
But if you count it as usable solution then you can do the same in 2570p.
>What does ME have to do with overclocking?
I don't know. Google it.
>not understanding what intel fakeraid is

and you don't clearly understand what requirements are for non-bios supported raid is. Yes, you need a 3rd boot drive.

the catch is you don't need to """"hack"""" elitebooks to RESTORE BASIC FUNCTIONALITY.

>>
>>60030054
Ivy Bridge only has support for two 6Gbps ports you tard. They made the ultrabay and main sata port 6 gbps while the elite oak doesn't even have an extra msata port

so 2570p has two sata controllers and it's objectively superior to x230. Thanks for proving my point.
Putting x230 drives in RAID is a bad idea. There is only one internal 6Gbps drive and one msata 3Gbps drive. Carrying always locked ultrabay with second 2,5" drive is a very bad idea, believe me.

Objectively 460s BUT

It has somewhat better build quality materials, generally better screen (it has 1440p option) and DDR4 and that new faster SSD port.

But not hot swappable battery and only one free RAM slot. It has 4gb soldered and one free. The 460 has two free slots.

>16GB RAM (New)
~$90
>500GB SSD (New)
Bit over $200 maybe
>2TB HDD (New)
~$150
6 cell battery at 91% capacity
~$30 I guess, it's not much more for a fresh 6-cell.

If you were trying to resell any of it you might be getting a bit less though, at a guess in the vague vicinity of $500 might be around where it would sell on ebay, though if you're pulling figures out of your arse for the sake of making an offer you could aim more around $400 maybe.
>>
>>60031843

If you make basic upgrades to him, like a ssd and dual-channel ram, it will probably last very long for you.

Does someone here know the exact differences between a T530 and a W530?

I'd love to turn my T530 into a W530 if the only difference is the motherboard with the Nvidia Quadro graphics chip.
Would be a really cheap way to start out my CAD side business.

All of them usually. Every model has a bunch of keyboard manufacturers. There's always a non-rubbish option available.

i guess what i mean is that it seems like the way the keys are made, when i press a key on the x1c3, none of the other keys are affected at all. they're all independent. but when i press a key on my older T430 or T200, when i press a key the keyboard seems to flex in around the key pressed. i hope that makes sense.

>>
>>60037414
>is it usable in a.d. 2017?
Of course, CPU performance has stagnated like crazy. I'm getting by just fine on a Core 2 Duo from ten years ago. Sandy Bridge will be usable until the death of x86-64.

>does it come with IPS displays? If not can I fit one in?
Not IPS, but the I believe its 1080p option is the same as the W520's, which is an absolutely gorgeous display. Even if it isn't the same panel, it would be easy enough to swap it for the one from the W520.

>can I swap Sandy Bridge CPU for Ivy Bridge CPU?
You can on the T420 by flashing Coreboot, but I don't know if the T520 supports it. If it does, then it would be doable. A bit excessive though, if you want Ivy Bridge it would be easier to get a T530 and mod the --20 keyboard into that.

I've got a Thinkpad T530 with no screen, no OS.
I've got a Mini DisplayPort to DVI-D cable, a VGA cable, an RJ45 cable, power adapter for the T530, and a non-EFI PXE server setup.
I don't know if there is a password set for the BIOS, but I know the password.

For a normal boot up, it will quickly beep two times after the HDD light blinks.
If I mash the F1 key, it will offer a single quick beep, then after a second, it will offer two quick beeps.

I just want to get the BIOS to display on a separate screen. Using the F7 key won't help.
>>
No one told me that the fn key and ctrl key on the T420 were swapped. Who in their right mind would want this? And the page back/forward buttons right above the arrow keys are the most obnoxious thing I've ever had the displeasure of dealing with. I've hit back twice while writing this post.

>>60037800
fn+pgup to activate thinklight = bottom left and top right corners of the keyboard, easy to press even when you can't see

and besides that, other laptops are the ones that swapped them. fn-ctrl was the standard, thinkpads simply maintained it instead of changing for the sake of change
>>

>>
>>60038148
yes, i'll report back any issue; thank you
>>
>>60038164
Ok. But first one more question.
Apparently two beeps mean some form of memory error. Do you have a chance to remove/replace one RAM stick?

Other than this. Try this:
Turn on
Press Enter (Get single beep)
Wait half a second. Press F1
Press Right arrow once
Press Down arrow three times
Press Enter twice
Press Down arrow once
Press Enter
Press ESC
Press Right arrow four times
Press Enter twice

If your ThinkPad reboots now you hit the Jackpot. Bios should now be Displayed at Analog (VGA) Port.
>>
So, I've got my T430, and I'm planning to upgrade to a quad core CPU. However, I'm a bit worried about overheating. Any protips?
>>
>>60038244
i assume i'm being prompted for the password after the two beeps, and follow accordingly; it reboots at the end, but still no display from analogue
>>
>>60038244
>>60038354
also, i've replaced the memory in both slots, and the beeping persisted
>>
>>60038354
It reboots due to "Save and Exit". So I don't assume you have a BIOS password.
If you repeat the same process, the setting will be on "Digital on Thinkpad". I guess that's the MiniDP output.
Can you hook up Displays to both outputs and repeat this process a few times?

Other options are "Digital 1" and "Digital 2" on Dock. God knows where this setting has been before.

So I've had an x230 for a while now, and about a month or two ago the battery just completely died.

It had discharged fully twice since I went on trips and left it at my home for a week ish while the pc was on sleep.

Anyways the battery died and I figured I'd just get a replacement since it was about time for one anyways. So I ordered a 9cell one from ebay for $55 and lo and behold the battery doesn't seem to charge.

So in my mind it's one of two things
1.) The battery I got was a dud since it has a manufacture date of 2013.08
2.) Something fried in my PC and it no longer has the capability to charge batteries, I've tested this on two separate chargers, the 90/65W ones and no dice.

Which one is it likely to be? Anyone have similar experiences regarding this? Also where to find cheap batteries for the x230 that work?

T60 is only worth it when you buy it off ebay for like 80 bux, when you want something to just dick around on and play with different distros and the such, and when you already have a modern laptop that you do most of your work on. Look at what CPUs that you get in modern laptops do in benchmarks compared to Sandy i5s and you'll get an idea of how far they are from being deprecated. Obviously you stand to get reasonable enough gains from a decent machine, but the poverty grade shit that gets shoveled out certainly isn't a step above. Modern sites just run like shit on anything desu, and you have to go down to some pretty awful CPUs to make them properly painful anyway, at least as a result of the CPU itself.

Chance are the only reason you'll want to upgrade is that before too long, you'll be able to pick up thinner models with better screens, battery life and (eventually) better CPU/GPU power, at prices that make any supposed durability losses seem reasonable enough.

But performance is noticeable with social media sites like facebook, or when watching BD 1080p videos, especially if you're using iGPU.
>>
>>60047617
I have an X220 w/ i5-2450m and a slightly damaged fan, and facebook sure doesn't have noticeable CPU performance issues, though it does definitely get the fan going. My internet connection is more of a limiting factor though so it's hard to say, but either way it's fucked that presenting text and picture is at all intensive or reliant on latency.

BD 1080p meme-tier bitrate chinese cartoons run fine though, outputting to FHD and anything below it. Maybe if you had a 1440p or more monitor it might be an issue.

HP stream.
There's also the ASUS zenbooks, XPS 13 and a few other models.
You'll be getting a MUCH more portable machine with significantly better battery life, especially under linux.

Also no one is gonna be laughing at your dinosaur machine, if that matters to you.

These old business laptops completely outclass new laptops that you can get for 150-300 dollars. Getting anything but a used business laptop makes no sense when you only want to spend a few hundred dollars.

>>60047708
I have a 2011 Mac mini with an i5-2415M. I think the performance of these sandybridge processors are more than good enough for modern sites. There are those that are slow ofc, but those are the types that peg the CPU at 100% (level1techs.com). But those sites do that on my other computer that has a i5-4690 too.

The haswell machine is noticeably quicker, but for browsing around, watching high definition content (even 10-bit stuff) on a 2560x1440 monitor, both do the job good enough. I don't really notice a difference between the two in those tasks.

>These old business laptops completely outclass new laptops that you can get for 150-300 dollars.
They really don't.
Especially if battery life is a concern. The most you'll ever get on a machine like a T420 is 4ish hours, and that's with tlp and all the power management shit you can do running.
If you want to lug around a 5-6lbs laptop, with another 2lbs charger, and make sure you have time to recharge in between every lecture/meeting/whatever the fuck you do, then go ahead.

What's the specs?
>>
>>60048289
My X220 with a 6-cell battery gets about 4-6 hours, depending on use. A 9-cell would be much better. Something crappy like the Asus E403 would give you a higher res display and about 12 hours battery life, but then you'd have to live with the shitty 32GB eMMC storage the cheapest configuration comes with, and about half of those laptops that I unpack have spacebars with broken stabilisers. These machines is horrible to use due to how slow they are. But the battery life is great.
>>
>>60038948
Why not?
>>
>>60048898
Yeah 4-6 hours if you have the brightness all the way down, only text webpages open etc.
Try running a youtube video at anything over 720p and tell me how long the battery lasts. Full voltage CPUs are awful at this.

No one is telling you to buy the cheapest piece of shit that ASUS makes.
Their zenbooks start at like 600 bucks and it has a pretty amazing screen + battery life.
If you want a well performing shitbox there's the HP stream. Both of these run linux well.
>>
>>60048873
X230, i5, 4GB RAM, 120SSD, 6 Cells nearly new, 240€, looks perfect

I bought another 4GB but discovered after that the slot is broken and sometimes it fucks up everything. it was better but 4GB is fine.

Anyway, with fHD DSLR video editing with color correction it's perfectly usable
>>
>>60049073
Zenbooks are nowhere near the price range of an X220. My comparison was with the processor you would typically find in new laptops in the same pricerange as a used X220 or 2560p.

Ofc. laptops in the 600+ dollar pricerange is a lot more attractive when you have that much to spend. Asus' X305 line hasn't been without faults tho. There were several models where trackpads getting stuck under the top cover and crooked construction that made the laptop slide around on the table as you used it since only one rubber pad touched the table. There were a few models that had huge issues with BSODs too. Haven't gotten any complaints about their newer zenbooks tho. The X220 does indeed outclass a shitty SoC-based 300 dollar laptop, even tho the battery life only lasts 3-4 lectures (that's what I got with my macbook 10 years ago).

If you can't afford to spend at least the required amount (about 500-700) for a entry level computer from a decent range, get a used business laptop, or save up until you can afford one. Don't fall for those cheap 300 dollar laptops. They're more trouble than they're worth.
>>
>>60049262
My point is that for almost every use case that's not using your laptop like an autistic ape, the HP stream is a better buy than a X220.
The full voltage CPU does nothing but ruin battery life, and the screen is garbage anyway. Sure the keyboard is worse, but you're gonna be using an external one for any kinda serious typing anyway.
3 hours of battery (assuming you're not shelling out for a brand new OEM 9 cell, then you'll get maybe 4.5 hours) is just useless these days if you're going to be doing serious work and not just shiposting in your bed.
Most lecture halls don't have outlets.

I want laptop with good battery and good HW support for linux.

Is thinkpad what I need?
Which one should I pick?
I want it to have:
- good battery life
- good screen
- good enough specs
- doesn't cost more than 300
- can be second hand

I'm considering t430, but not sure how's battery on this one compared to others?

I never had thinkpad.
>>
>>60049541
>I want laptop with good battery
Not a fucking thinkpad then
You either get a full voltage CPU or good battery life, pick one.

Again, scroll up. At 300 get an HP stream.
Or stop being such an inbred and save up 300 more dollars for a zenbook
>>
>>60049541
Funny how a T430 has shit battery life, a garbage screen, and you're probably gonna spend more than 300 bucks if you include a drive/ssd, OEM power brick and chink 9 cell.

What do people think about the libreboot X220? It's completely refurbished with freedom respecting components. IPS panel, and a upgraded cooler. Its pretty pricy, up there with the MSRP of the X220 at launch.

Looking to get a 4-cell battery for my X230. I like it because its flush and doesn't raise it up from the back when its on my desk. I have the 6 cell still. Would part number 0A36281 be compatible with it? Even if its not, I don't think its too much of a big deal as I said this is just a battery I'd put in when its at a desk. It would be nice if it worked though. I heard that some of the X220 batteries can supply power to the X230 but not charge from the X230.

In my experience. Lectures don't last 12 hours. They're two hours, and there can be hours, sometimes even days until the next lecture. So a laptop that can provide 5-6 hours of taking notes is more than good enough. I never ran out of battery on my first generation macbook during lectures.

HP Stream is as bad as the E403 series from Asus. People buy then not expecting how slow the eMMC storage and SoC really is. Either save up for a 500-700 dollar laptop from a decent series, or get a cheap used business class laptop. 4-6 hours is more than enough for most students.
