My Ducky One came in the other day, I don't know if you guys remember but it's my first mechanical keyboard. So far I really like it, it's about everything i wanted and I really like the brown keys, though they are a tiny bit on the light side. I think it's just something I'll have to get used to. And I guess I can replace them if I want, right? You can just pull the switches out and put new ones in?

I would like a palm rest though, does anyone have any recommendations as far as that goes?

I feel sorry for those poor bastards who joined the Hyperfuse and Penumbra group buys, they've been waiting over 2 years for their caps to ship

I just was at WASD's website and I am really considering ordering a custom keyboard there. However, I don't quite understand the configurator there - do I have to save the custom layout in order to actually get it (and register in that process) or is it carried along with the order? Because I hate registering anywhere, but I would love to have a keyboard with weird colors and shit.

What's wrong with that? I am not a regular in this general and I am far from being an obsessive mechanical keyboarder, so forgive me if I don't know all the brands by heart. All in all I would pay around 210 bucks (Europoor) and that doesn't seem to me all too rip-off for a keyboard that will be exactly like I want it.
>>
>>60018033
The caps aren't worth it. The board itself is fine, so you can buy the barebones WASD and find some aftermarket cap set that's actually decent.

how's this idea for a 75% layout

>top row
same as choc mini

>right shift
1.25u

>bottom row
1.25+1.25+1.25+6.25+1.25+1.25u followed by a 0.25u gap and arrow keys

the arrow keys are offset by 0.25u like in pic related

this means you have perfect compatibility with almost all keycap sets especially with blanks (legends can be a little bit wrong like if you use menu key as right shift for example)

so no worries about 5.5u spacebars or non-standard modifiers or 1.5u esc etc

So it would look like this? It would still have a shorter right shift, but at least most keycaps sets, even those from tai-hao and gateron include it. Also it would be a 0.5u gap not .25u one.

I need a numpad for work, so something like this would be nice for me. GMK Carbon doesn't have orange colored nav keys, which means I'd have to live with miss matched legends as scroll lock would be replaced by delete
>>
>>60022338
If you want you could spend the extra 10-20 bucks and get a Ducky One with doubleshot PBT keycaps for $99, or dye-sub PBT for $109

But you have the insert key elsewhere on that keymap.

I spent that much on my GPU.
What I want is for my RK-9000 I got for $20 five years ago to not fuck itself up for no reason and force me to buy a keyboard, knowing I will never be able to get a sale that good ever again.
I don't want to be forced to use this dirt-crusted Dell keyboard, but I guess I will have to.
>>
>>60022551
Then get some chink keyboard like a tomoko for 30 bucks
>>
>>60022493
on choc mini you have insert on fn+del. i have a dedicated insert key instead of pause since i never use pause anyway

these: >>60021688 >>60021826 just have the default choc mini top row to avoid complicating things. my idea is mainly about the right shift/bottom row/arrow keys. the user would be able to put on different keycaps and reprogram the board as they like

Its actually the keycool 84 layout.
Anyway while tinkering around I decided to improve on the traditional TKL layout by making it compact, or is I like to call it CTKL. It uses standard keycaps and the layout shouldn't be that much more different then your normal TKL.

gateron browns would be better if you think you'll like the switch. you can upgrade the keycaps for $20-40 later on and you'll have a solid keyboard assuming you like the magicforce 68 layout.

Does anyone own a Drevo 84 or an AK33? Looking for your opinion it. I'm looking for a cheap replacement for my Noppo choc mini, I'm not willing to budge on the layout, it is the single most important thing to me. I figure I'll buy it with browns since I have reds and blues.
I intend to replace the stock keycaps with a simple low priced set, POM if I can find it as it's my favorite.
If you can suggest another board with the same in-line fkey format I'm open to it. I don't mind paying more if the keycaps are nice enough to not need replacement. Indifferent towards backlighting.

>>
Looking for a new mechanical since I've been without for a while

~$100
burderland
104 preferred, I actually use the numpad often
I'm thinking browns. I want something less loud but with some feedback. Will probably add o-rings
Black with a regular design is fine, most other designed keyboards just look ugly to me. Not too concerned with the keycaps as long as they feel good. I'll rub the letters off within a few months of use anyway if they aren't etched through
Don't care about backlight or not
Used to have a filco 104 with reds and a leopold tenkeyless with blues. They died in a flood.

It's a lot easier to find a fuckload of them now than the last time I went shopping for one but I don't know most of these brands now
>>
>>60017725
thanks for ruining my night anon. I hope there's a massive massdrop on that shit so I can get it. Typing right now ona Tex Yoda and it's comfy as fuck.
>>
I love my choc but it's white and everything else I own is black. I could replace it's keys but then I need a keyset that works with the non-standard shift and space bar. Space bar being white, shift being gray. The only "feature" that is important to me is being able to switch capslock and control but I can do this in software too I think. $140 is definitely more than I want to spend because I can get 3d printed custom shift and space for like $35, so I figured I may as well just spend the bit extra on a different board and that way I'll also have a spare set of caps when I replace them.
>>
>>60024086
OK. Better/worse than original Model M keyboards? The lack of a Windows key is kind of a dealbreaker for me, but I could remap Caps Lock if I had to.

That doesn't look bad. If only there was a 75% version.
These small keyboards got me thinking. I wonder what it would be like to use a 60% keyboard, but with a numpad. With this design all but one of the keycaps are standard. The issue however is that the 2nd row down from the top is not staggered properly. The tab key needs to be .25u smaller, while the \| key needs to be .25u bigger. I opted to shift it by that amount that way everything remains standard. Now since this is still a standard 60% there shouldn't be any issues with case or plate designs. The problem however is that I can't find a PCB that will support this layout.

I just copped a Dell AT101W for 3 dollars at a thrift store, how did I do? there's no noticeable yellowing of the keycaps and only minor scuffs on the outer housing. How did I do? I'm quite liking these black alps

>>

They exist, like Acer makes a $9000 gayming laptop with a fullsize Cherry brown keyboard and a 21" curved ultrawide screen
>>
>>60025685
No but the older ones have very nice keyboards as far as laptops go. I also own a modern laptop from 2016 with chicklet keys and while it is not even close to as enjoyable as my gateron blue board to type on I actually type at almost 20wpm faster on it. I sit around 105wpm on my blues and 125-130 on the chicklet. Nothing modern has a better keyboard than the t420 series and before thinkpads. You can also install that superior keyboard into newer models although I am unsure of the specifics.
Doess anyone else find they actually type slower on their mechanical boards, even though it is far more enjoyable?

Niche of a niche. Just pull the trigger, the community is so autistic, you can resell for 150% of the original price, especially considering that keycaps come out in spats. Anything SA or DSA is basically a safe investment.

>>60028069
DSA Dolch is one of those things SP restocks though, so the resale won't be as high as single-run sets.

ergodox i can understand since it's ortholinear and shaped according to your hands. your pic seems dumb since it's staggered so there's no point in angling it further. maybe if you're a linux neckbeard who literally doesn't use a mouse and you need to find the perfect angle for your hands/arms.

realforce, if its too much then there is the typeheaven. otherwise go for chink clones.

you do not have much choice.
hhkb for memes and the "hacker" layout.
realforce has fullsize and tkl layouts, but the top bezel is pretty ugly if you ask me. there's also a full-size RGB version with mx sliders so you can use mx keycaps on it.
leopold has a 68-key layout and something like a 1800 layout. these are honestly the most normal-looking of them all.

also, there are imitation ones like plum.

I've been using DSA Granite for almost exactly a year. They are probably slightly less textured than when I got them, but still feel pretty grainy.

Except for one part of the spacebar which has sorta smoothed out.

I'd say I had the same experience with Pok3r caps. Never smoothed out completely, but do become less textured with time. I don't know if they'll ever get completely smooth, especially not in 6 months.

So fucking smooth compared to cherry reds and especially browns. It's easy enough to determine when you've actuated the key, and the tactile feel is a subtle but noticable dip in force if you type lightly. With these thick o-rings I bottom out pretty much every key stroke if my arm is off angle.

Why are there so few keyboards with the numpad on the left side? I know a lot of people who have tenkeyless just have an external numpad to the left.

most people are right handed and the numpad is designed for right handed use. the demand for a left hand side numpad is probably extremely low. a compact layout with numpad only extends by 4u to the right anyway

Well, having a numpad on your left is more ergonomic for right-handed people, provided you use a mouse.

I bought some from aliexpress. They are nice but they have tiny marks where they broke out of the mold. You won't be able to see it once they caps are on. The main problem is that the top of the keycap is really thin and you can see the stem trough it. Looks like shit on back-lit keyboards. I put my blank set on my novatouch and it works but I have ordered some replacements.

I plan on getting two kbs for different areas. Need some confirmation whether these are good buys:

What's the best set of non-blank PBT caps for 50 USD or less?
>>
>>60051655
Anon, the click is necessary because it teaches you to flinch every time you press a key, which prevents bottoming out and therefore reduces stress.
>>
>>60051655
sometimes the click feels a bit overkill but blues and greens are the best cherry-style switches for typing. keep in mind that buckling spring is even louder
>>
>>60020898

Is there a name for this particular style of keycap? Looks comfy as fuck. very retro-esque, but I can't find anything remotely similar when I'm looking at keycap sets.

Those are topre hi-pro and are only availble on topre keyboards. If you can't afford topre boards then check out SP SA keycaps and their chink clones, or the IBM style hi-pro on massdrop right now.

That's pretty much your best choice for mechanical keyboards.

That's only for the alphas. The modifiers are another 43 bucks, then then number pad is another 25, but if it sells enough then the price will drop down to 40 and 20 respectively. If you want a full set then it will cost you around $110 bucks.

another example of offset arrow keys

but i think my dream keyboard would be like a choc mini with dual 2.25u spacebars (the left "spacebar" could be used as a modifier to type brackets and symbols with the alphas) so if i had to build my own keyboard i'd probably do that instead of >>60021826
>>
>>60053296
That site is pretty awful too and is just filled with American layout keyboards, guess If I want a proper kb I will have to spend an extortionate amount of money. Or I could go the chinky route which is seeming more like my kind of speed.
>>
>>60053404
No one really like high profile key caps all that much. They are a niche of a niche so they do cost a lot. SA keycaps sell between $100-180 for a full set and the chink knockoffs are only 30 bucks cheaper. Topre hi-pro is only available on the $300 topre keyboards so if you do like those retro style keycaps prepare to pay a lot. Maybe if you are lucky you can find an old keyboard then find a way to adapt then stems to fit.

Total pleb here. I've used rubber dome since forever. I want a clickity mechanical keyboard that is not too noisy, doesn't require inhuman strength and has that "minimal" aesthetics feel.
I'm kind of retarded so I need my retard Enter key.
Also, it has to be white.
Budget is around 150€.

Bit awkward but after looking at the pic of the switches again it seems like clear's would be the best considering I don't want to make a huge amount of noise but want that "definite" click instead of a more mushy click. or am I mistaking what the switches mean?
>>
>>60053942
Its kind of pathetic that there are people on 4chan who can't read.
>>
>>60053954
no, you shouldn't have to move your left pinky very far from the home row, instead of your "comfy" greentext key you have a comfy left shift which is infinitely more useful than a greentext key
>>
>>60053982
>ISO shift
>far from the home row for the pinky
girl hands much?
>>
>>60053979
The problem here is that the sound of bottoming out is louder then the actuating mechanism. As a result blues, browns, black, clears, etc. are all around the same noise level. If you get o-rings it will help, but if you want quiet then maybe get a switch that is already silenced like matias quiet click or cherry silents.
>>
>>60054001

>>60054116
I'm using a really loud model M and you can barely hear it if the door is open. But my walls aren't made from dry paper. The sound shouldn't be an issue, but usually mechanical keyboards are 1.5-2x louder then a standard microsoft office keyboard. My old rubber dome keyboard was about as loud as my cherry blacks, but I'd say that's an exception since it was a really loud keyboard.
