I swear by a KDE install of openSUSE, currently on Leap 42.2 for the sake of stability.

If your definition of "user-friendly" is "most similar to Microsoft Windows without the limitations of Microsoft Windows", then this will scratch your itch.

YaST is honestly the star of the openSUSE distro period, it's a great piece of software for linux newbies & experts alike that gives you a smattering of administrative command line functions in a GUI form.

the instructions for building and installing gtk2/glib2 differs slightly between distributions, and the only difference this patch makes is that you apply the patch before following those instructions

so the best way to describe it is simply;
1. get the file(s) used by your distribution for creating gtk2/glib2 packages
2. add in a line to patch the files before building, or just patch the sources yourself beforehand
3. build the packages
4. install the packages

on arch it's just
pacaur -S gtk2-patched-filechooser-icon-view

as it's in the AUR, other distros may have similar (a PPA? an ebuild?)

Has something major changed with the font rendering of Linux in general in the past few months? I just installed Arch with Cinnamon and the default rendering looks a lot better than it was last time I played with Linux. And I notice Infinality is gone now. Did they integrate the Infinality code right into the system or something?
>>
>>59963239
yeah fontconfig's default interpreter is a lot better.
there is basically no need to use infinality, and infinality has been basically dead for a while because it broke hardbuzz and no one wanted to update to it.
>>
>>59963239
freetype 2.6.4 and 2.7 introduced subpixel hinting by default, might be that
that was 9 months ago, but probably less since your distro might not have gotten it until later
>>
>>59960182
So I tried looking at the online documentation and google and I haven't been able to find out whether debian/ubuntu based distros have an equivalent to the Red Hat based command:

rpm -qc

Which let's you query the configuration files of a given package. Any help guys?
>>

VIM is not a distro...

I have used debian and LUbuntu for lightweight use.
>>
>>59963285
>>59963316

So I used to use the Windows preset on Infinality since I like rendering to be as similar to Win7 as possible, is the default way things work now more similar to that, or more similar to what the Linux preset on Infinality was?
>>
>>59963934

And also what should someone do now if they want the font rendering to emulate Win7 as much as possible? Leave it as is out of the box, or is there someone who's figured out what configs to use?
>>
>>59963934
i've no idea
nor do i know why someone would want to make fonts look like they do on windows, i use mactype on windows to make them look more like freetype defaults
>>
>>59963988

Yea I realize the Windows font rendering is not "better" but I'm so used to it I find it easier/nicer to read. Although the out-of-the-box rendering on Linux seems close at this point.
>>
>>59963951
it really depends on your monitor

i use hinting-slight and the default ("version 40") interpreter. And my fonts look really good, the best in years.
You can also adjust the order of subpixel rendering like rgb/rgba/grayscale or whatever but i didn't need to.

Let's discuss [[ ]] vs [ ] or test.
>you don't have to quote variable expansions when using [[ ]]
This is stupid because for safety, variables should ALWAYS be quoted anyway unless you specifically want a list of words.
>you can use operators like > and < for comparing numbers with [[ ]]
The shell operates on strings, first and foremost. Therefore it only makes sense that > and < sort operators lexicographically instead of evaluating strings to numbers and then sorting them mathematically.
>you can match regexes with [[ ]]
That is what grep does.
>you can use && and || inside [[ ]]
This overrides the builtin && and || commands, making the code a little bit harder to read. There is nothing wrong with
if [ -f "$myfile" ] && [ -n "$mystring" ]; do echo "foo"; else echo "bar"; fi
.
Also [[ ]] isn't POSIX compliant.

The reason to use Arch are the same as for every other distribution. You use Arch because you like their release model, their package manager, their software policy regarding licenses and patching. Those are the reasons to use a distribution.

arch has basically nothing going for it. Its release model is shit- some package maintainers literally just use cron jobs to push their packages with 0 testing. Quite often, it doesn't even get packages earlier then other rolling distros or even fixed release distros (gnome 3.24).
The biggest problem with arch is it's developers. They're incompetent and lazy. They admit that "simplicity" is only about simplifying their job. Unlike Void and Slackware, complex software is included because it makes their job easier. (systemd and PAM). nothing wrong with systemd btw but it certainly isn't simple. The entire distro is devoid of any consistent policies. The "software policy regarding licences" is literally nonexistent. Proprietary packages are thrown in with free ones, zero way of telling which is which, and they don't even have a dedicated nonfree repository.
Pacman is pretty good, I'll give you that.
As you said, the AUR is pretty useless.
Arch is just a toy, with useless developers and bugs out the ass.
>>
>>59965644

ifupdown (0.8) unstable; urgency=medium

Ifupdown now comes with a systemd service file. Any options specified in
/etc/default/networking will no longer be used. If you are using
CONFIGURE_INTERFACES=no, then run "systemctl disable networking" instead.
If you are using EXCLUDE_INTERFACES, then edit /etc/network/interfaces and

tl;dr When you write bash, use bash syntax, when you write sh, use sh syntax.

>Variables should ALWAYS be quoted.
Agreed.

How to compare numbers:
c-style: ((var1>var2)) && echo foo
sh-style: [ "$var1" -gt "$var2" ] && echo foo
bash-style: [[ "$var1" -gt "$var2" ]] && echo foo

>Regex
Using grep works, but it spawns an additional process - which should always be avoided (for maximium speed), unless you're writing a sh script, where test doesn't support regex.

How do people maintain distros without getting swamped by updates? I'm using void right now and as far as I'm aware it's run mainly by one guy, with people helping out here and there. It's rolling release and there are updates all the time. I assume that every update would have to be screened and maintained, in the 6 months I've used it nothing has ever broken from updating. the repos themselves have a pretty good selection of programs too.

I also use void
I have absolutely no idea how the Void people do it. openSUSE tumbleweed manages to barely ever have breakage, and get packages quickly, but it has a huge number of paid developers and is backed by SUSE. Arch updates (in my experience) break all the time, and arrive later than Void. Void also has more packages than Arch in its repo, and a few of the useful AUR packages. I think that Void generally has 1-2 people, usually community volunteers in charge of packages.

void is honestly a great distro. I really hope it matures more and gets more users. It has competent developers (mostly it is just the work on juanrp, the netbsd guy). XBPS is nice, but for me the two real draws are runit and libressl. OpenSSL has been proven, repeatedly, to have incompetent developers, and libressl is the only solution. Runit amazing- an actually minimal init/service supervision solution. It's faster than systemd, and far less bloated than systemd and openrc. The biggest flaw with the distro is its lack of packages and small userbase. IMO the reason for this is the inclusion of a musl option, which was a mistake from day one. Alpine already does "truly minimal distro without GNU bloat and systemd" much better. the musl option has far fewer packages, unnecessarily creates more effort for the maintainers, and is basically unusable on a desktop from my experience.

Hey /g/, I've been running Ubuntu these past few days and I really liked it compared to Windows. However, I need a VM for some Windows-specific software. How do I get the windows VM to perform as well as or at least close as possible to running Windows naturally/natively? Currently the VM works, but it's a little laggy.

Hopefully in the future I can nuke my Windows partition completely if I can get the VM working well enough. Thanks in advance.

The expression “the Linux kernel” can easily be misunderstood as meaning “the kernel of Linux” and implying that Linux must be more than a kernel. You can avoid the possibility of this misunderstanding by saying or writing “the kernel, Linux” or “Linux, the kernel”.

What are the differences between Fedora and OpenSUSE? I wanted to try one of them but I can't decide which one because they seem both very similar and very good.
>>
>>59969690
A few options: check to make sure it's using all your processors under System > Processors, give it more memory, GPU passthrough. The last one is a bit tricky and you'll have to look up a guide but if you can get it to work you can get native performance on games & shit.

Have you also tried running said software under Wine? Is it known broken?

Basically in a release notes debian devs say that while networking is still there and works, they don't recommend using it, and they way it handles errors will change to more strict.
>>
>>59971262
Not much really. Both are backed by strong corporate development, openSUSE with SUSE and Fedora with Red Hat sponsorship. Both have tons of community repositories. Both use RPM. YaST and Fedora's package managers have similar user friendliness. Linus uses Fedora and hates openSUSE for its tendency to require the root password for little things but neither are bad choices f a m.

I translate shit so I have to use WPS or LibreOffice and xPDF. What do you do daily? May be very different, may be very similar.

My system is Debian-based (Kali with all the tools because I like learning stuff) and i3 as the window manager. Why i3?

Windows/GNOME/KDE
>open WPS
>open xPDF
>press a key combo/move windows next to each other

i3 (after a fair amount of config play)
>press Win+Ctrl+J
>Workspace 4 (labelled Work) opens WPS and xPDF and since this is i3, they are immediately aligned side-by side
>I can move to the workspace whenever I feel like it after opening

This is my use case and it works really well. I can't see myself shaving off any more time, unless I boot straight to it (which, thanks to the hibernate function, often happens). Take it with a grain of salt, but if you work in vim a lot, you can make the whole system work like a huge vim machine.

It won't, GNOME gets bad when you're on old/slow hardware. My laptop (2.3GHz, 4GB RAM) can run GNOME no problem. You will have zero problems with resources, as far as I know.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
>>
>>59974379
Thanks anon! I also found a python class pactl that can change volume. Nice!
>>
>>59974521
nvim or vim of course. type vimtutor to learn it.

>>59974561

I'm terribly sorry for interjecting another moment, but what I just told you is GNU/Linux is, in fact, just Linux, or as I've just now taken to calling it, Just.Linux. Linux apparently does happen to be a whole operating system unto itself and comprises a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Most computer users who run the entire Linux system every day already realize it. Through a peculiar turn of events, I was misled into calling the system "GNU/Linux", and until now, I was unaware that it is basically the Linux system, developed by the Linux project.
There really isn't a GNU/Linux, and I really wasn't using it; it is an extraneous misrepresentation of the system that's being used. Linux is the operating system: the entire system made useful by its included corelibs, shell utilities, and other vital system components. The kernel is already an integral part of the Linux operating system, never confined useless by itself; it functions coherently within the context of the complete Linux operating system. Linux is never used in combination with GNU accessories: the whole system is basically Linux without any GNU added, or Just.Linux. All the so-called "GNU/Linux" distributions are really distributions of Linux.

For the sake of getting things up and running would I be better off going with Debian Testing or an ubuntu flavor if I wanted to get a dual boot going on this laptop?

# 2 don't have '

I've removed some flags to make it simple

install xclip or just redirect the output into some file instead of piping to xclip to see if it works

hard mode: make it an alias instead of a function
>>
>>59977203
a `%` sign needs to be in front of L
>>
>>59977203
forgot to explain what it does

the command should execute feh in thumbnail mode
`--action` executes a custom command when you click on the thumbnail instead of opening the image
in this case it executes feh again, this time in normal mode, loading the file list (-f %L) and starting from the selected file (-\| %F) in fullscreen (-F)
`--action1` makes it so when I press 1 the file path is inserted into the clipboard
`;` is part of feh's shitty syntax, it prevents moving on to the next image when the action is performed

>assembling my first computer

I know Mint as the "linux for people who like Windows"
And then the bigger distros like Ubuntu, Debian, and Fedora.

Should I just stick with one of those for now? I have an interest in machine learning/deep learning. Are there any geared towards that similar to how backtrack/Kali is geared towards pentesting?
>>
>>59981032
Oh, the whole reason for the /sqt/ thing was because I wanted to ask if there's any difference between installing Windows 10 first on an empty SSD followed by a linux distro, or instlaling a linux distro then windows 10. I've heard windows 10 doesn't play well with installing new OSes? Might be just a meme.
>>
>>59981093

I think LibreOffice Calc and Icecat are pretty much the only GUI programs I can't do without in my day to day life. Maybe Pinta and GIMP for those few times when an image needs to be processed other than being cropped / resized / reencoded, and Audacity when I get back into playing guitar.

What are GUI programs you can't live without, /fglt/?

I decided to move on Linux as I'm doing nothing but learning C++ these days and Linux could prove an fun environment + hey no more botnet.

After my research ( Consider I want to use KDE ) - I was thinking to go with "KDE Neon" distro.

I will basically just use CodeLite mostly to code in - with sometimes alternating to Vim for slow learning and to see if it's worth it.

Other stuff I need is a simple document editor to save my notes and stuff ( Libre suits that) an PDF reader for my books ( surely I can find plently ) and Firefox is already there working nice.

So should I go with that distro or what?
>>
>>59982868
Neon is the best distro for KDE, but basically any distro works with KDE. I personally prefer Debian KDE.
