Top springbar is uneven. So that's already a sign of the "quality" of these watches.
But for 130 Franks, who gives a damn, put the thing on ebay, double your money, still a bargain for the buyer if they're looking for that specific piece.

The second they make more in-house movements (they have only one in-house dress watch so far) is the second I buy one of their super cool watches. They're like the Rolex of shitters.

Archie sort of likes them too so that's a point.

Not really. For one Oris is privately owned and they actually put effort into their watches. Furthermore they're starting to go in house with movements and they aren't just making bare minimum shitter movements but are actually designing these things to have features like 10 day power reserves. They also don't pretend to be something they're not and keep their marketing straightforward, and don't make any tasteless shit like cheapo quartz watches or "homages" of Rolex, instead coming up with their own (very nice) original designs. They also invest in R&D and have invented new complications like a mechanical depth gauge for their divers and a mechanical altimeter for their pilot's watches.

Meanwhile, at Swatch...

It has a Valjoux 7751 movement. Paid a bit more for this one though.

What do you guys think of it?

By the way, when should one do a servicing of the watches that you own? How much does it cost to service an average ETA movement?

Hideous, hope you got a great deal on it. servicing the 2824-2 shouldn't be too bad as long as you find a reputable independent watchmaker. The 7751 will be a lot more expensive to service.

Today my Seiko 5 Actus 6106-8660 arrived, so I now have both a Suwa and a Daini 5 Actus, both from 1975. Also arrived is a Citizen Cosmotron 7803 electromechanical watch, that will be running at delicious 36000bph once I get it working. Seconds hand sweep will be like on an old 18000bph watch though due to the way these movements work.

Customs kinda raped me, but still overall I'm happy with what I got.

They're both unserviced, so I'll only give my initial impressions:
Suwa 6106:
>hacking
>the more aesthetic movement
>kinda awkward two stage day-date quickset
>suffers from excessive wear on the unjeweled barrel arbor bearing
>6100 family extinct from the Seiko lineup
Daini 7019
>no hacking, don't know yet if it can be retrofitted
>less attractive movement due to being better optimized for mass movement (think 7S26, this is its ancestor)
>better quickset mechanism
>the better movement overall
Externally they're about the same quality, maybe the Daini being a bit better, even though it has a snap-on caseback. But these are just two examples of the kinda large 5 Actus model lineup.

I've already spammed my Daini one, so here's the sellers pic of the Suwa. The fish-eye effect really distorts it, but it has that typical Seiko "grammar of design" case and lug shape.

Case shape is pretty similar to the Daini 5245/6 King Seiko case shape which was also used on LM Specials.

Can't say I'm surprised to hear the Daini movement design has held up better. It follows the usual pattern.

What I don't get is that the 6106 has four more jewels than the 7019, but the barrel arbor pivot is metal on metal. Where did all the jewels go?

I'll find out when I start servicing that one too, but I can already tell, that it's construction is more elaborate and mechanically complex, therefore I'll agree what is usually said, that it's the worse of the two in being mass-produced entry-level movements.

Also I just found out writing this that the four extra jewels are just there for the date-wheel to slide on top of them. I'd expect this on a Rolex or similar, not an entry-level movement.

>Case shape is pretty similar to the Daini 5245/6 King Seiko case shape which was also used on LM Specials.
I'd say by looking at it irl, that it's kinda like a cheap, simplified 45KS, only a bit thinner on the lugs. That pic really distorts the shape of the case. See this pic of the same 8660 case.

My assumption would be that the 6106 has those jewels because the 61xx was used as a basis for a bunch of different tiers of movements. Suwa made a crap ton of variants of the 61xx and 62xx movements and used them in wildly different price categories.

With that pic I see the 45KS resemblance a lot more. If you're interested, at some point I'm going to be getting rid of a 5206-6061 that has a serviced movement but the automatic winding is not very efficient. Since you are actually watchmaker I'll cut you a great deal on it plus a free spare 52xx movement so you can dick around with it and see if you can fix the automatic winding with parts from the donor.

Pic related is what the 5206-6061 looks like.

Hungarian Air Force. Heuer Montreal was issued in the commie times from some time in the 70's, and Fortis since 1990. Honestly I don't know if Fortis is still the standard issue but from the pics it looks like pilots wear 7750 chronos.

The only problem with issuing Valjoux 7750 powered chronographs to air force pilots is that the chronograph function works like shit under high g-loads on the V7750 because it's indirectly driven.

The Lemania 5100 was far preferable for that application as it had a directly driven chronograph second hand that withstood high g-forces much better. Too bad the greedy bastards at the Swatch Group killed the L5100.

theres no rush for these things, especially if youre under 25
>>
>>59880799
its a really rough price range for chronos and you will likely end up with a valjoux 7750 based watch which will end be THICC

athe hamilton looks fine I just feel like Hamilton is for entry level swiss movement pieces like the khaki or jazzmaster. spending more than 500 on a Hamilton or tissot or something just rubs me the wrong way.

If there was another chrono movement that wasn't so thick in that price range I would gravitate towards that. but for now that means quartz, mechaquartz, or the seagull

You both make good points. affordable chronographs are largely missing from the mechanical market because they are hard to make especially if you aren't using a thick ass valjoux

Alexandra Mammario is shilling nomos on her instagram
>>
>>59888828
Here are the simple facts: Nomos are literally the first new company to develop the capacity to design and manufacture mechanical movements including escapements on a series production basis since the 1960s. They join Vostok, Orient, Citizen, Seiko, ETA and Rolex as the only non haute horlogerie companies capable of this.

Developing this capability took a several year and ~12 million Euro investment in escapements and a further ~2 million Euro investment in designing the ultra-thin DUW 3001 calibre. These are enormous investments from a company with an annual sales volume of 10,000 - 20,000 units, and as a result must necessarily be reflected in increased unit prices.

In an affordable luxury watch market heavily dominated by Chinese-cased ETA-powered marketing-driven shitters, any watchmaker that makes the investments required to become a manufacture and actually increase the technical diversity of series produced mechanical movements should be applauded no matter whether you like the aesthetics of their product line. To the extent that Nomos succeeds by following this path, it may serve to encourage more investment in the technical aspects of watchmaking by other companies rather than just investing in more value engineering (i.e. cost-cutting) and more advertising.

Just in the last 10 years we have gone from a $1,000-$4,000 market where every single watch was powered by an ETA movement to one where you can now choose between ETA, Tudor, Nomos, and Seiko (8rXXs, 8LXXs). How can this development be regarded as bad for people interested in horology, regardless of whether you would personally buy any of those watches yourself? If only Miyota and Seiko would add micro-adjuster models to their ebauche offerings and Tudor would begin to use their in-house movement in more models, we could return to an era of real competition in movements in production watches not seen since the glory days of the 1970s.

I listed ETA as one of the companies already capable of it. That is the Swatch Group's movement making arm.

One key point is that Nomos is the only company to develop this technical capacity to design and fabricate escapements and movements on a prediction basis in the post-Quartz era, where most of production watchmakers have turned to production cost minimization and allocated an ever growing proportion of their funds into marketing instead.

If you have small wrists it looks like it could wear a little big, but it's a good watch, especially for somebody who is not that into watches. Seeing it is quartz it will be a lot more accurate and instead of expensive repairs you'll just have to change the battery.
My gift watch that got me started was a Tossit, even though I like it as a gift I couldn't justify buying it for myself, your Citizen has a much better value/price rating

Raketa either need to do more than just design an automatic complication for their ancient 26 caliber or do what Vostok does, continue making the original cheap commie watches till the manufacturing tools blow out.

They're a brand mostly known to still exist by watchfags, and I doubt there are many of them who'll pay 700-1000€ for a 18000bph automatic watch when you can get a NOS example of an old hand-winding model for 80€ or less.

>>
>>59890150
I could never find confirmation of the current bph but I wouldn't be surprised.
Old Raketa had automatics too. New one is just an altered design.
It's true they're still running on fumes and can't do much else currently because in the mid 2000's they were doing *really* shitty but well...mountain Jews came along and couldn't settle for simple, but honestly at that time the models they had were really shitty quality outside of the solid movement so I'm glad they did something different now even if they went a bit overboard.

At that price range you won't get any better than the ETA, but you can get a movement as good for much less than a Visodate since the markup is so high.

So I kinda realized there are absolutely NO parts for the 7800 series apart from cannibalizing. Now I'm hoping it only needs a high quality battery, or a simple fix electronics problem, like dirty contacts or something. Appearance wise the movement looks clean and undamaged, and the balance wheel and hairspring looks good.

Tomorrow I'll slap in a battery and take a look at the circuit board, if you see a bitter aggressive shitposter, that's me and it didn't work.

Pic not mine, this one is a bit, dirty mine is absolutely flawless, so fingers crossed for just a shitty depleted battery.

That's the best part for me. What logo would you prefer on there? You can literally just buy an old branded dial on ebay and have a watchmaker glue it on for you or design your own.

It's just a dress watch, I'm not really sure what else you would call it. Do you want specifically a black dial? That's a bit harder to find. There are a whole bunch of seamasters like the one you posted though if you're willing to buy a vintage watch. If not I guess something like a Hamilton Jazzmaster would be the closest modern equivalent I can think of right now. The Intra-matic has the right case shape too but the hands are simpler and no metallic indices.

Myself included, most men I know who wear watches are typically very effeminate (and gay). The rest are usually 50+ years old.

Am I correct in assuming that most of us itt are gay (or old)?
