Should I even use a DE if all the ones I've used so far have given me tons of problems with screen tearing? Practically all I use my computer for is the file manager, a video player, a music player, an image viewer, a torrent client, and the web browser. I'm sort of a noob but the majority of my time using Linux over the last two or so years has been with Openbox in Crunchbang so using a WM solely isn't really new to me.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

Did you try compton?
>>
>>59813450
Yes, it did nothing even though there was no existing compositor even running. I would try some more but I already reformatted the drive in frustration. What I'm debating on now is installing Arch with just a WM or installing KDE on it and then removing it if it causes problems.
>>
>>59813530
you could try things with a live usb before installing to save some time
>>
>>59813554
Live sessions tend to be misleading in my experience, I used one of Antergos the other day and my video playback immediately out of the box was pretty much identical to my MPC-HC setup on W7, with no screen-tearing or stuttering, but when I actually installed it it was shit.

Then again, that might have been because I made the mistake of using xfce because the place it worked best was in whatever version of GNOME that live usb ships with.

Aye, in my experience Gnome's compositor is pretty good with most hardware. It makes sense as they have the most devs and big backing from Red Hat etc. Xfce has one of the shittiest compositors (although it was improved in the very latest version, don't know if it's hit the distros yet). Actually, I think the Xfce compositor is even disabled by default. Compton is hit-or-miss and requires config file tweaking on many systems

Me again. I installed Debian a second time, only this time with GNOME and KDE. Exact same shit. KDE was worse than GNOME, unresponsive as hell and just as much screen tearing as xfce. I'm assuming it's a driver problem, but I really don't want to spend hours searching for bug fixes and ways to even install drivers. I honestly think just following a guide on how to install Arch would give me a better system. I didn't think I was asking so much out of an OS. I'm not even a gaymur.

Before I wipe the drive again, can someone just tell me how to get sources.list out of read-only mode so I can try to install the radeon driver and see if that helps?

I don't know what GPU you're using, but if it's compatible with AMDGPU then installing the relevant packages and setting up your xorg.conf appropriately with something like
Section "Device"

should be enough to give you a tearfree experience.

The systemd debate is very widespread. Have you tried googling it?

At least 50% of the "What's the deal with systemd?" comments we get in here are from trolls, because they know once /fglt/ starts down the systemd path it pretty much consumes the rest of the thread.

It's been discussed ad nauseum here, and elsewhere. The only reason to still be asking /fglt/ what they think about it in general is if you are only interested in being spoonfed, or are trolling.

I found out how to change the sources list, and installed the driver before rebooting. It's better, but I'm not sure if it's gone completely. I would need to have my W7 install running side by side with this one to see what the actual problem is. The tearing is gone, but it still looks choppy. I can't figure out how to use mpv, so my only testing option is VLC.

/usr/share/X11/xorg.config.d/

The xorg.conf file is located /etc/X11/ folder. You need super-user privileges to edit it, and in a default configuration, you won't actually find a file by that name in the folder, because the system uses some sane defaults.

Invoke super user privileges to edit a file called /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-amdgpu.conf and put the code mentioned here >>59815121
into it. What the system does it'll load any files located in the xorg.conf.d folder if they apply to your system and apply them. If you then restart the X server, you can do
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep AMDGPU
in a terminal and see if amdgpu and TearFree activated properly.

I cant for the life of me make alsamixer stop unmuting the sound in system after rebooting.(Ubuntu 16.04LTS).

Ive tried:
sudo apt-get --purge remove pulseaudio

Manually disabling the "automute" option on alsamixer in terminal

Manually changing alsamixer headphone value(master is always at 80% and headphone always at 0, causing to mute) and typing as sudo
alsactl store 0

Ive tried changing the contents of rc.local file. I added

alsamixer set 'Headphone' 80

To the end of the file but even this does not work.

Um. In order to make i3-gaps work you need to remove window names. So you can customize window borders, but only focused or unfocused ones, like
# class border backgr. text indicator child_border
client.focused #4c7899 #285577 #ffffff #2e9ef4 #285577
client.focused_inactive #333333 #5f676a #ffffff #484e50 #5f676a
client.unfocused #333333 #222222 #888888 #292d2e #222222
client.urgent #2f343a #900000 #ffffff #900000 #900000
client.placeholder #000000 #0c0c0c #ffffff #000000 #0c0c0c

That's from the i3 guide. Probably openbox et similia might give you more options if you're interested in floating windows more than tiling.

It's a software suite for booting your system that doesn't follow the Unix philosophy of keeping all your shit simple. Rather than being separate programs that all do one thing really well, systemd is a collage of processes and daemons that poses a couple of security and stability risks.
That's about as much I know about that, not sure about the NSA.

We can all agree that hating systemd is a meme.

Most people hear it's bad and so they propagate the idea, and blow it out of proportion without much research, consideration or thought.
When systemd first appeared, it was quickly adopted because not many people had qualms about it.
Those who did (and those were few) had their own reasons and thoughts (they didn't get meme'd into hating it) and moved onto other init systems.
Most of them were reasonable enough not to start a fucking civil war because of them, because even they knew that systemd is a natural step forward in general.

If systemd was as hated as it is now, it would never have been so widely adopted.

>So, how did this meme really come about?
Well, I'll tell you.

systemd is the most advanced init system in existence.
It's better than Apple's launchd and better than whatever Microsoft has.
It's arguably one of the best things that happened to GNU since Linux.
The jews know this, so they spawned a fake controversy around it in order to divide the community, sabotage the project and keep GNU/Linux from advancing as an operating system and gaining more market share.
Just think about it:
>Linux - the most advanced kernel in existence
>systemd - the most advanced init and service manager in existence
>free as in both freedom and beer
And now with Steam OS, Chrome OS and both Wayland and Vulkan maturing, it's only a matter of time before GNU/Linux becomes truly mainstream and takes over the gaming market.
But they were a bit late to notice this before the wide adoption of systemd.

That's how, even though it seemed like a natural step forward in the evolution of GNU/Linux back then, systemd is the most controversial topic in the FOSS world right now.

>TL;DR
Hating systemd is an artificial meme brought about via CIA's advanced meme warfare techniques in order to prevent the year of the GNU/Linux desktop.

Since systemd was first proposed it has been frequently discussed in many forums, mailing lists and conferences. In these discussions one can often hear certain myths about systemd, that are repeated over and over again, but certainly don't gain any truth by constant repetition. Let's take the time to debunk a few of them:

Myth: systemd is monolithic.

If you build systemd with all configuration options enabled you will build 69 individual binaries. These binaries all serve different tasks, and are neatly separated. Many of these binaries are separated out so nicely, that they are very useful outside of systemd. A package involving 69 individual binaries can hardly be called monolithic.

Myth: systemd is not UNIX.

There's certainly some truth in that. systemd's sources do not contain a single line of code originating from original UNIX. However it derives inspiration from UNIX. In fact the design of systemd as a suite of integrated tools that each have their individual purposes but when used together are more than just the sum of the parts, that's pretty much at the core of UNIX philosophy.

Myth: systemd is bloated.

Well, bloated certainly has many different definitions. But in most definitions, systemd is probably the opposite of bloat. Since systemd components share a common code base, they tend to share much more code for common code paths. Here's an example: in a traditional Linux setup, sysvinit, start-stop-daemon, inetd, cron, dbus, all implemented its own scheme to execute processes with various configuration options in a certain, hopefully clean environment. On systemd the code paths for all of this, for the configuration parsing, as well as the actual execution is shared. This means less code, less place for mistakes, less memory and cache pressure. systemd is also pretty modular. You can choose at build time which components you need, and which you don't need. People can hence specifically choose the level of "bloat" they want.

You are indeed correct. I opened the pc and checked if this was possible, without success. Searching on the net, https://faq.i3wm.org/question/6523/dynamically-changing-window-border-colors.1.html appears. Apparently i3-gaps does not add such a functionality, so dunno, perhaps they weren't using i3.

You're not using super user privileges then.

For simplicity, create the file inside your own home folder first, then from the terminal do
sudo cp yourfile.txt /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-amdgpu.conf
.
If the folder xorg.conf.d doesn't exist itself, you can rectify that with
sudo mkdir -p /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d

I was typing in sudo nano and then the directory so I don't know what went wrong. I tried creating a text file, but it didn't work. I booted into W7 and tried playing the same video file, and it looks like the choppiness was inherent to it, meaning that the problem supposedly solved itself.

At least I've got a working video player, which is more than I can say for the last few times I've tried to install a distro. I'm just going to try to use it like I would use Windows for a week, and see where I want to go from there. Thank you for the help, if you're the same poster who's been replying.

What is the alternative to using ls? The reason I am using it is this:
logs in /home/user/logs/ are in this format "access_log-YEAR-MONTH-DAY-HOUR" with the hour going from 00 to 23

I need to work with the first hour that is available for the day that I chose, it will not always be 00 . And once the command finds the earliest log available, I need it to output the time that is in the first line (which is what sed and cut are doing)

Hi anons. Apt failed me on a Ubuntu 16.04 system recently. I'm looking to set up HTTPS on all my domains served by my single server, so I got my certificate from Lets Encrypt. But then when I went to change my Nginx config, I found that I wasn't using a recent enough version. I've been using Nginx 1.4.5 when HTTP2 is introduced in 1.9.5.

Quick digression, I admit I'm not sure if HTTP2 and HTTPS go hand in hand. If an anon wants to explain that to me it would be appreciated. Perhaps I can serve HTTPS without using HTTP2?

Either way, when I try and install the newer Nginx with Apt, it holds back the update no matter what I try: apt update, apt upgrade, apt dist-upgrade, apt clean, all don't help. So it looks like I'm going to have to grab Nginx 2.11 source code and compile it myself. It will be my first time compiling a binary from source, so this should be fun.

Also, on an unrelated not, is anyone excited about Ubuntu 18 shipping with Gnome? I'm really quite happy about it. I never liked Unity, but moreso I hated the D.E. shit-slinging that goes on around here. It's going to be a lot nicer with more convergence on D.E.s

Linux SUCKS. Why? Because:

1) Command lines/Lack of GUI's

Why the fvck would I want to use a command line? I have a modern computer, capable of displaying color and icons. Why should their be a command line? And further, why doesn't everything have a gui? Gui's are good, and easy, and don't require me to learn commands. Yey for Gui's.

2)Root/sudo is stupid.

Why on earth should I have to deal with either using sudo or running as root to actually use my programs? I still can't get a lot of programs to run because they keep whining about permissions. What ever happened to good old admin accounts? Why does sudo break everything?

3)Apt-get

Now this is just plane stupid. Why is it so damn hard to install anything? I have a desktop, why not do it the way it should be done? I get the installer icon, click on it, press forward a few times, wait, and have a nice icon on my desktop. Why isn't it done this way?

4)Compiling

Again, stupid. Just give me a fvcking installer program. None of this compiling sh1t.

Come on Linux. The rest of the world has moved beyond 1990. It's time for you to do so also. I'm giving up and installing windows.

why are you doing this to yourself?

I think it is yes, come default on Ubuntu.

I honestly thought Unity was good on large monitors.
>>
>>59820142

I prefer the more Windows-style DE's like Cinnamon or KDE (if it wasn't unstable) but I figured I'd give Gnome a try since I noticed all the mainstream Linux distros have Gnome 3 as the default environment now, so I assumed it must be good in some way. So far I can't see how anyone could eve use this.

Try XFCE, gnomes a good first distro but you're probably going to switch soon. If you install another desktop enviroment, like XFCE, you can switch between them at the gnome login screen by pressing the settings cog.

So try a few different ones and uninstall the ones you liked least. Some desktop enviroments look shit on the surface like i3, but are fantastic if you put in some time to configure them.
>>
>>59820261
Adding onto this, XFCE's defaults are pretty awful. Look into getting themes and icon packs.
>>
>>59820184
>it must be good in some way
it's good in the way that most of the gnome devs are employed by red hat and they are able to work closely with red hat devs working on other projects like systemd and wayland and neatly integrate everything
red hat is pushing for gnome and other distros are adopting it because it's a sure deal that they know will "just werk"
>>
>>59820261

I already do use Cinnamon and XFCE is probably what I would use if Cinnamon didn't exist, I just figured I'd try Gnome since I've never spent any time with Gnome or Unity.

I just can't believe I have to download a separate tool to change basic shit like the theme/fonts and use a separate website _ browser extension to change the way panels work. Did they literally think no Linux user is going to want to change some of the default appearance after installing?

GNU/Linux*
>>
>>59820303

Yeah it's pretty awful. Someone posted a picture of the size of the multiple title bars the other day; they are so retardedly sized. Unity is much better in my opinion out of the two.

Moron alert, I may have fucked something, please help.

The non-free repo on Void Linux wasn't working at all, so I uninstalled it. The directory where it was had another main repo file (which just had a line that said repository=main repo url whatever). I tried changing that to the nonfree repo URL and synced XBPS, and no dice.
So I deleted it and tried changing the xbps.conf file. Still no dice.

Problem is, I remade the main repo file, but now XBPS just keeps spitting out that it can't fetch repo.voidlinux.eu/current/x86_x64-repodata

What the fuck, help please
>>
>>59820676
Nevermind, put the wrong damn URL. Ignore moron post.
>>
On a related note to >>59820676

I can't see the multilib repo package in XBPS (doesn't show up in xbps-query, nor can I install it), and I'm missing a bunch of other packages, like Java in the nonfree repo.

Is this something to do with musl instead of glibc? How fix?

>Is this something to do with musl instead of glibc? How fix?
It is.
Wait for someone to port these to musl (hahaha) or install the glibc version of void if you really need these packages and save yourself some headaches. I guess you could also install glibc in parallel with musl but I have no idea about how to do it.
>>
>>59820785
just stop using musl. It's absolutely unsuited and unusable for desktop/laptop.

Mate or Budgie? I like the look of both versions. I heard Budgie was moving to QT, and I hate the look of qt applications, so I might stick with mate if that's the case. does it work well on shit hardware (2ghz dual core)?

Then don't choose any Arch-based distro.

I've been distro hopping for a while, and here's the thing: Ubuntu is (un)fortunately the best choice out there.
Stable, reliable and comfy.

I wanted to get into Arch (tried Antergos and Manjaro, too), but it's a mess.
Avoid it at any cost!

>Why the fvck would I want to use a command line? I have a modern computer, capable of displaying color and icons. Why should their be a command line?
just because guis came later, and are clearly much better at some tasks, that doesn't mean it's better for all tasks
command line and other text interfaces are still very useful, and i don't see this changing any time soon
people who know what they're doing will use both, where appropriate
