This is a random question but here goes: when i was a boy my dad had a watch and it had an alarm which actually sounded like a chime/bell instead of the normal beep. The watch was analogue and I'm not entirely sure i didn't imagine this. Does this watch exist which has a nice sounding chime alarm?

enjoy your inferior, ugly movement and massive markup, and also probably your dead watch in 15-20 years because nobody wants to service that crap

Hello /wt/.
I came from /csg/ searching for advice from you.
I am going to Switzerland soon and everyone tells me about the watches. I decided to come here for some advice.

I come from the motherland of cheap shit yet I am willing to put a little more money for a nice watch. Around $250.
What can that net me? Please take into account that I'm not really into it. Just want some good looks. Something simple would be great

>>
>>59712119
Doubtful you're going to get a watch that is actually "swiss made" (the term has gotten so diluted) for $250. The cost of something that really is all hand made, in house, in switzerland is generally measured in kilobucks.
>>
>>59712119
Find a Seiko or Orient that you like and have it shipped to your hotel in Switzerland
>>
>>59712119
Just buy an Orient
>>
>>59712119
Not to be an asshole, but for that kind of budget you'll find exactly ZERO things actually remarkable or well made.

I think you should save a little more and focus in quality build Seikos that are around 300 usd. Forget about Switzerland for now.

It looks like they hired one of the WinAmp theme creators to design it. Could work with a teal colored shirt and some color adjustments..

Change the gold bits to be salmon pink, the springs to be milano red and give the light silver metal a brushing of periwinkle gray...it'll sell big time, trust me.

I've bought several (Seiko 5s21, Omega cosmic and megasonic, borel cocktail, Accutron). Don't buy anything that is constantly faked (like a Rolex or modern Omega). Make sure your buyer has good feedback. Most sellers offer two weeks return as long as you pay return shipping - check the listing. Buy the seller - if something seems off about the listing, don't buy. If you have a friendly neighborhood watchmaker they should be willing to pop it open for you and quickly confirm its real. Assume anything off eBay requires a service unless it is literally new in box.

Don't buy from sellers like the kind in pic related.

There was an interesting though brief discussion here how the next moon watch should be to properly honor the moon landing in 1969. That anniversary is only 2 years from now and I hope the gnomes at Omega have started cracking. A new round of fancy colour schemes will not cut the mustard.

Have to take out the crystal and use a heat gun to melt the glue holding the cyclops to the crystal. I'd get a watchmaker to take the crystal out and put it back in, personally.

Personally I don't mind the cyclops on the DJ, but I can't stand the two tone jubilee or oyster in any way shape or form whatsoever. I'd not won this DJ in a number of years for that reason, until I saw a picture of a two tone DJ on leather and realized how much more I liked it.

IMO, for a man on the ground looking up, a moon phase is de rigeur.

For a Man on the Moon, an Earth phase and libration indicator is a must.

Some people believe the Earth is in a fixed position as seen from the Moon. That is wrong. Pic related. Libration means we see 59 percent of the Lunar surface which means Earth makes a sideways motion as seen from the Moon. Correspondingly there is a slight up/down motion due to the 3 degrees axial tilt. In a way that would be an analemma.
>>
>>59722013
If you think the Swatch Group is going to spend even (one) dollar engineering a new movement for a special edition Speedmaster, you're crazy.
>>
>>59721898
In theory, a same case diameter Oyster Perpetual crystal should fit and comes without a cyclops. I can't guarantee that will work though. You can just buy a replacement DJ crystal from an independent with a parts account and heat gun the cyclops off before having it installed.

>>
Why do you pay more money for less complications and a cleaner face?
>>
>>59731935
Go back to Facebook, dad.
>>
>>59731935
Because it's quite trendy these days to market "simplicity" at a higher place than "complicated" things.

There's a reason to that deep down though: when you go for something simple, you end up with plain colors, simple shapes and raw materials, and as such, those colors, shapes and materials have to be fucking perfect, otherwise it looks like shit. Complex aesthetics aren't much harder to achieve than simple ones, nor more expensive, but their complexity tends to dissimulate the shitty colors, shapes and materials, as you focus on something else. That explains the Fossil and Diesel styles, overcomplicated to hide the shitty plastic, and if they went for something simpler and cleaner, their true value would be exposed under the sunlight.

As such, a clean face with zero complications needs much higher production values than a more complex one.

But clearly there's still marketing at play pricing a simple watch higher, just because.

There's a population of inexperienced/outsider watch-wearers who don't have a solid grasp of the design range of watches, and who've been erroneously conditioned by smartwatches and mobile phones to think that personal accessories need to be essentially blank or they are too "busy". Lacking an awareness of the centuries-long tradition of heroic compromises that watch designers must make between rapid legibility and "clean" design, these misguided newcomers choose excessively plain designs that, to the experienced eye, are shockingly empty and jarringly out of place with nearly any style of clothing. Fly-by-night "minimalist" watch manufacturers are leaping to take money from this easily-duped market by rushing out a tidal wave of zero-effort blank discs and embarrassing Bauhaus-derived horological abortions. Their goal is to suck the newcomers dry before they realize that classic clean designs aren't an innovation, and that they already existed a hundred years ago and look nothing like the stark, geometric feces presently emerging from the anuses of the "minimal" watch manufacturers.

You can help by aggressively ridiculing anyone who comes here for your approval on a "minimal" watch.

Getting to a decent level of accuracy with conventionally regulated balance mechanical movements is expensive because it requires a person to adjust and regulate the movement by hand, one at a time.

The only way someone has come up with to try and automate away the labour costs of adjusting and regulating movements is Swatch's approach of laser cutting the balance wheel to mimic a free sprung balance without the labor to manually adjust it. It sort of works but it isn't a great solution for beat error and severely limits the future adjustability of the balance.

Why do you want the 41mm size? For the style of watch, 41mm will be really oversized.

I'm fat and I have 7.5" wrist and a 36mm DJ still looks fine on me as far as size goes.
>>
>>59733740

maybe if you spent less on food you could afford the full size one

I only replied because I feel like I should do what I can to combat the awful oversized watch trend. Only chronographs, divers and fliegers have any reason to be 41-42mm. Dressy sports watches look much better and are way more comfortable to wear in 36-38mm.

i like it, dial and hands really are a step up from standard vostok dial, but the case finishing isnt that good. its basically a vostok with a nicer dial/hands and an actually good bracelet.

Yeah, what a find. I'm cleaning the bracelet right now and it looks like even the springbars are original. And the bracelet has a spring loaded extender, which I first though was an add-on, and that works too.

Not bad for my first Seiko imo.

Yeah. I'm still kinda bummed that they would just pawn the recently dead grandfathers watch like that to the first bidder. The woman did say some dumb shit about how they'll buy their little kid a new bike from the money, but does a new bike the kid will grow out a few years from anyway really compare to a heirloom watch?

Either way it's at a better place with me than with them, it just hits close to home, since when my pep pep died we kept EVERYTHING. He had shit like every monthly issue of a ham radio magazine from 1959 to 1990.
