>The mids are nice, very clear, a little creamy sounding, and just the right "distance" for my preferences. I will say that I like a mildly recessed mid-range, which is what I hear with these headphones. Male vocals tend to showcase that mild-recession more than female vocals. The bass blends slightly into these lower ranges of the mids, but contribute to more of a smoothing and creamy effect for the lower midrange as opposed to muddying or sloppiness. In fact, detailing and separation remains impressive and is aided by how well the mids blend into the higher frequencies. No spikes or shrill vocals to speak of. It is comforting to hear the mids so well represented here because often times when the “cool” kids show up with their crazy colors and bass and crash symbols, they tend to pick on the mids. Sometimes they get beat up, but at this party everyone seems to be getting along great.

I'm guessing thoughts on sound? They have the most bass out of all the headphones I currently own (the m40x maybe on par, but I have never directly compared the two). You'll definitely notice the change coming from the k712, low end has more quantity, but rolls off rather steeply below 60hz. Mids will be a bit more recessed than the K712, and the treble is a tad smoother, but not as detailed-sounding.

What's a good way to test sound stage? And any recommendations for songs that are good for testing highs?

My normal go to is my Senneheiser IE80s. My Gf just got a pair of Senneheiser Momentum 2.0 (over ear wired). I'm currently trying to compare them, granted I know IEM's and Closed back over ears are not really the same use case.

Just listening to some "3d audio" crap on YouTube, I am noticing a notable difference in, what at lest my understanding of, sound stage.

>>
>>59642456
Good.
But, this doesn't inform us much about the nature of the error content.
For now we consider quantization error as uncorrelated to the signal, as white noise. The error is distributed over the bandwidth of the converter.

By increasing sample rate, the total quantization noise is spread over a greater bandwidth. The total error is held the same. Doubling the bandwidth reduces the noise in the intended range by ~3 dB, 4x nets you 6 dB.
Oversampling becomes steadily more inefficient as you increase the oversampling factor. We can manipulate the spectrum of quantized artifacts, and push them into the range outside the intended signal. A combination of digital and analog lowpass filters suppresses the noise transfer function.

The really simplified idea behind a delta-sigma converter, basically.

I've been using the stock pods since I got this phone but it's getting too much. I need something comfy and good.
>>
>>59645651
Much hate for the noise. See Amiga video I linked above.

I love that shit. Pretty much like how "nearest" sounds better to me than the many-tap resamplers. Sometimes worse is better.

Still, I understand it'd be insane to spend any more on amps and dacs than I already have, particularly when regardless of the approach taken in the DACs, the differences should be way past invisible.

I'll enjoy what I have for now, and eventually get more cans.

Retiring for the night now.

Should I embrace the hype and get the SHP9500s or should I just get the HD 558s?
>>
>>59647711
Both are comparable in terms of sound quality. HD 558s are more laid back and has more bass quantity. Though, bass can bleed and can make it sound rather muddy at times. SHP9500S' are better at instrument separation and has a wider soundstage for gaming; though, they can sound rather bright at times. All up to personal preference, to be honest.

I love my 558's. Favorite pair of headphones iv ever owned. I bought them when there was a huge price difference between the 598(pre SE or C version. And i'm in Canada, where the 598 didnt go on sale as often on amazon)

Iv never worn or listened to the philips. I have brand aversion to philips though... But on the other hand, i actually like the look of them. I have read they are comfy, but get logged with sweat if you sweat a lot... I dont, so i dunno if thats also an issue with the 558's. I know the 558's pads can get replaced easily. I read the SHP9500's has permanent pads.
>>
>>59648388
Did I say anything wrong? But yeah, SHP9500s do have non-replaceable pads unless if you plan on doing a bit of work. The pads are removable, but that's about it.

On the other hand, rtings just updated their SHP9500 frequency response. Any thoughts? Did they use the SHP9500S instead of the SHP9500 this time? Sorry for the old graph, couldn't find anything better.

Guise, I've been researching dynamic range and came across these audio tests by an audio engineering, recording and headphone testing company.

They produced a bunch of free audio tests that you can use to test your hearing. In particular, it high-res audio.

>Many people believe that high-resolution audio (HRA) offers the potential for better sound quality than CDs by using higher sampling rates and greater bit depths—typically 96 kHz or more and 24 bits compared with CD's 44.1 kHz and 16 bits. A higher sampling rate can represent a wider range of frequencies extending into the ultrasonic region, while a greater bit depth can represent a dynamic range beyond the 90 dB practical range of CDs.

>The big question is, can humans actually perceive the higher frequencies and wider dynamic range offered by HRA? Bob Schulein, a long-time audio-industry consultant, and Dan Mapes-Riordan, an expert in psychoacoustics—both founding partners at ImmersAV Technology—have developed three sets of audio files that allow anyone to explore this question for themselves.

Download zip files from this page: http://www.avsforum.com/forum/91-audio-theory-setup-chat/2370801-test-your-ability-hear-high-res-audio.html

http://www.avsforum.com/uploads/1-Dynamic-Range-Tests.zip

And then open 001... file and play it and adjust audio so it's comfortable. Then start playing higher numbered files which drop down by 5 dB each. But, DO NOT TOUCH THE VOLUME AGAIN! You'll notice the middle section of music drop. When you can't hear it anymore, you've reached the end of your dynamic range.

Again, once you've adjusted volume for 001 file, do not adjust it again as you go down the dB.

Report the lowest dB number you can hear and your phones!

Depends on what "very hot" means.

If it works and doesn't sound like shit (shoult still sound like schiit), it's likely it is OK.

They do get hot, but I'm thinking 40-45C.
>>
>>59651874
I can put my hand on it and it feels warm. its like 29C (estimation. 85-90F)
>>
>>59651891
That's very normal. Mine definitely gets considerably warmer than that.

They make the casing metallic for good reason.
>>
>>59651910
Does it differ depending on your cans?

It seems fine with my HD600s but with VSonic GR07 it gets super hot.
>>
>>59651948
AFAIK at least a portion of the power that doesn't go to the headphone is lost in heat.

I run them 24/7, which is why it's always warm. If I played music through (I've got HD600 too) it'd actually get colder.

>>
>>59651770
In the case you haven't noticed, rtings has bass compensation in their graphs just like Goldenears has in their newer ones. Bass roll off is associated with a lot of leakage issues when measuring headphones. Roll of can be exaggerated in addition to having a compensation that reduces it.

They sound great, especially with bass heavy music but the weight of them and the headclamp kills me. I can't wear them for long without discomfort.
>>
>>59649155
Different anon here. Agree they sound better with the pads, can tell they're there for a reason after listening for a day without (the reverberation causes them to sound hollow and off, the biggest problem, and the frequencies [especially bass] less precise and refined), but when you reverse the mod does it matter that the foam is exactly where it was before or just that it's across?

>>59657359
They're just not worth the price. It's more of a fashion statement at this point. There's a lot of headphones at that level of price that sound better.
>>
>>59657359
>Can someone explain beats by dr dre to me?
They are headphones, by far the most popular ones in the world from a brand currently owned by Apple. They mostly make portable models and only make closed back on ears, over ears and in-ears.
>they're very expensive
Some I guess. Depends on your point of view. They are a brand. The brand and price is part of their appeal to many people.
>are they good?
Some are, depending on your tastes. I'd say most are not but that same can be said for most headphones in general.
>or are they just really loud?
Headphones are only loud if you drive them loud. Being loud isn't a feat of the headphone, it's the feat of the amplifier(the device you plugged them into). Some Beats are also wireless so they have their own circuitry built in for that.
>Like why do I never see beats here?
They are not popular over there? How should we know without even knowing what is "there". I see multiple daily. People wear headphones outside a lot.
>>
>>59657176

>>
Why don't all of you having such weird and strong opinions about amplifiers go and learn about their operation.

>>59657544
>smartphone is enough to drive HD800
It can be but this isn't that simple. Smartphone outputs differ, headphone loads differ and people's requirements for amplitude differ. Without know all of these parameters the best we can do is make educated guesses about it unless the amplifier is very good.

>>59657561
Not a common choice among audiophiles. Generally people tend not to prefer their sound over the best competition. I bet for most users here the brand is more of a turn off than anything even if the headphone was good. Unless you see the brand appeal they rarely represent a good value purchase.

Some more customer service shenanigans...

Apparently, they now want you to send the headphones in when your headband breaks. They don't want to sell you a cheap headband anymore.

fulla2, fulla2+magni2/u, modi2u + magni2u.

Just don't get a modi2 non-uber. They make no sense as the fulla2 has the same DAC thing, sounds the same, is also an AMP and does more i/o options.

HD800S fix that. Some mods also fix that to some extent.
>>
>>59658911
This was supper shady. Chinkfiman wanted to charge a flat fee + both ways shipping to fix something that they used to sell spares so you could fix it yourself.
First the guy created a thread, made it to the front page and got chinkfimans attention. He kept updating, making new threads, until he made a last update saying he was taken care of and everything was fixed.
Then they tried to chink some other guy with the same bullshit and when he made a thread about it the first guy deleted ALL his posts trying to hide the info and cover up hifiman for whatever fucking reason.

Hehe fulla schiit
Anyway that thing looks fucking tiny, does that not do anything to audio quality compared to a modi 2 Uber? I'm more focused on the dac part, current headphones don't need amping. Also does that fulla2 have a microphone jack on the left of the volume? Becuase that would be super nice.

Their latest headphones cost $3000. They justify the cost by claiming the design is great. Head chinkfiman lost his shit over constant criticism and made this post. Few posts under that post, one guy took the actual Shangrilas apart and exposed how shitty the plywood is.

Fucking hilarious if you ask me. The whole company's falling apart because they're run by greedy bastards.

fulla2 is output only. (No mic in, sorry)

The headers other than the headphone output are usb data and power (should separate power be needed), line-in (to chain a different source that won't do USB DACs, like a DS or a PSP), line-out w/volume (affected by line-in if plugged), dac line-out (not affected by volume knob nor line-in).

>I'm more focused on the dac part, current headphones don't need amping.
The dac sounds the same than modi2 (I have an uber). This is the general opinion when I looked into the issue, corroborated by my experience once I got the fulla2.

As for the amp, it does sound identical to magni2 to me for HD598, but with HD600 they're bottlenecking it (not enough gain, do not sound as good as the magni when the fulla volume is at 4-5 o'clock).

So I just picked up the Ollivan version of KZ-ATE's ordered from Amazon today. Gotta say, I'm pretty damn impressed with these for their price. And I managed to snag them for China prices from Amazon (friend gave me a gift card that covered the sum, I just paid shipping), so even better bang for buck here.

Very bass heavy, nowhere neutral this stuff. But I'm very very impressed by the detail they manage to push out. Some stuff does get muddied due to the very heavy upper bass - lower mid territory emphasis, but most of the time you that doesn't stop from picking up a lot of little stuff here and there. As a listening experience, I'd describe it as enjoyable. It was fairly easy to find a good fit, and while these are mainly considered over-the-ear IEMs, I actually found a better fit for my ears by not routing them over the ear. So you can go with both styles with these.

Anyone else who has picked these up? If yes, what are your thoughts? I think these are a fantastic pair of bang-for-buck IEMs.
