Burn-in is the change devices go after some time of use, on headphones it doesn't happen though, people who perceive it are most likely under effect of placebo.

How is the ATH-MSR7NC? Looked at the HD380s, but the freq. response looks too wacky for me. Seems like that's the only other closed headphone with good enough isolation. Worried about that treble peak though.

These aren't for me, but a present for a friend. After many years, his are breaking. He can't afford anything decent on his own.

He's not picky about anything but comfort. His ears are pretty senstive to touch from a bike accident years ago, and headphones that apply pressure hurt pretty quickly. Circumaural with deep pads are important.

I'd get him some Beyer DT231/234/MMX2's but I'm not sure the pads are deep enough (new ones seem to have thinner pads), and the mic wire in the DT234/MMX2 breaks like clockwork at the pivot. Looking for some alternatives.

Thank you, /hpg/.

Amazon and sometimes Massdrop have them for as low as 100 euros, or $115, but they go up in price again, you can search the archive and see some posters talking about the drop in prices, the 100 euros price was made by amazon france. not so long ago. if he needs the headphones asap then he should consider the other options if he wants, or wait for another price drop.
>>
>>59607721
Not sure about your fix, but HD 598 Cs' are a downgrade to your headphones, if you like what you have right now.
>>
>>59607721
They're both memes. 598C's don't isolate as much as M50's. They probably have the same bass amount of bass though and mids are also recessed with an aggresive 2Khz peak and treble is rolled off while M50X's have boosted treble.

TLDR: When memes are compared,
M50X:
Better isolation
V-Shaped
Slimmer and foldable

598C:
Comfier
Awkward Bassy/Dark with 2Khz Peak
Not as portable
Don't isolate as well as M50X

You'd only need an amp if they're not loud enough at 100% volume or are inefficient (not getting enough power.

Off of the info given so far assuming you'd need something efficient to plug into a controller/onboard, I'd recommend:

NVX XPT100
Brainwavs HM5
DT770 80 Ohm
Custom One Pro/Studio
Somic MM185
Status CB-1

All except the DT770's have a detachable cable so you can plug in a mic like a Vmoda BoomPro directly into the headphones.
>>
>>59608166
Probably the M40X since you'll be listening on your phone and they're efficient though will need new pads to improve comfort.

In this case I think the famous M50x could be a good choice too, until I search the price to import some headphones with digital noise cancellation, I found the parrot zik 2 which, according to the reviews has a powerful noise canceler, if the Estimate made by amazon is correct it is costing 348 usd.
>>59606125
I have not had time to read about HD 4.40 (4.50 will be very expensive) to choose, but it comes out cheaper than zik 2, which is good since they appear to have similar functions. I hope someone can give me a light on these two, and how correct this estimate of the Amazon is.

I've tried the beats solo 3 instores, but it's way too bass heavy.

Ive never really used headphones before, just inears for the bus ride and a proper stereo hifi system at home my dad had.

>Is this the latest /hpg/ meme word?
>tonality
No it's a word with a very clear meaning. Genuinely surprised if you haven't heard it before. It refers to the frequency response and the coloration which it creates. I used it because I think it's one of the problems with HD 800/800S. The V-shape is not enjoyable. It's not a problem if you know how to operate an equalizer.

>>59606933
>how expensive do non-amp headphones even get?
There's no correlation between price and drive requirements. Every headphone is plugged into some device that acts as an amplifier anyway.

To list some headphones that are sensitive enough to be driven loudly by an average smartphone and above 1k in price: Focal Utopia and Elear, MrSpeaker's Ether and Ether Flow, all high end Grados, all high end Sonys, Fostex TH-900, Denon D7000, Audeze LCD-X/XC, Oppo PM-1 and I think all Ultrasones. Missing plenty I'm sure but there are a lot of sensitive and expensive headphones on the market.

>>59609750
"Alternative" medicine, quackery and pseudoscience. It's more of a belief than anything relying entirely on placebo and spontaneous, natural healing. There are multiple branches of it, all nonsense if you read about it. While placebo effect can be used very effectively on some select medical issues, problems arise when it's selected as an "option" for proper and effective medial treatments in serious cases of illness.

They're pretty great. Quite neutral with just enough bass and great overall clarity. Stock comfort isn't the best but can be improved with larger pads. I got Shure SRH840 pads and they are much more comfortable.

Sup, fellow Cancuck. I'd recommend the Philips 9500s. Got them back in early January and I'm pleased with them. The price has probably gone up, but I got them for like $90 on Newegg.

The only downside that I'd say is that the have pretty shallow cups so if you have huge ears, you may dislike them; also there's not a lot of bass but I personally don't mind it.

Thanks a lot, you fuckers. Biggest piece of shit headphones I have ever used. The fucking thing is crushing my head and giving me migraines. Didn't know what open-back meant, turns out they fail at the primary thing headphones are used for. Might as well be using speakers with how loud this fucking things is. What kind of idiot designed this?

I just want comfortable headphones that won't be causing me pain after 5 minutes of use. Is that so much to ask? I don't even care for the sound quality. Just give me something that isn't crushing my skull.

I used cheap 10$ earbuds when I was in the hospital. They weren't causing me pain, but they were falling out of my ears all the time, which made for an overall uncomfortable experience.

Great headphones but I don't like the stock sound much. I can't really think of a meaningful problem with them past their tonality to the point there's no other headphone I'd want. EQ makes the tonality issue trivial.

>In your opinion, does it sound close to the DT880 or the K702?
Depends on your definition of close. They share similarities, DT880 being closer. Main difference between the DT880 and HD 800 is the location of the treble peak. In DT880 it's shifted higher up. Both share a notch in upper midrange which emphasizes the treble peak(s) further and both share a broad boost in high bass/lower midrange. For an untrained ear they could sound alike.

Your perception is the most important link in any media chain, if getting stoned makes things sound good and gettind drunk causes the opposite than of course any headphone, speaker etc will sound accordingly.
You should probably check while sober and, if you still can't tell the difference than yes, for you the stive for audio quality is non-sense.
>>
>>59613274
While sober I really appreciate the quality and detail of my headphones.

While drunk I don't really care.

While stoned, it ranges, but I've literally listened to music I don't care for and seen the music as a literal flow from the screen. Like, a 3D object which I observe the monitor as the source (even if its not) and then see a line from which the audio moves into my head, like a rainbow.

Last time I got stoned I listened to typical stoner music and just enjoyed the visuals.
>>

>Do the same songs always give you the same visuals?
If you aren't fucking with me, then no.

I thought it was normal. It's different every time, I can't really describe what they 'look like' because you have to experience their creation over time to understand why they are a thing.

The shapes themselves aren't complex, it's just how they are made is ineffable.
>>
>>59612537
Those are Chinese fakes. I actually ordered one of these in the past thinking it was genuine (I had owned a 598 in the past prior to this). The fake isn't even good either. Look at the earpads and hadband padding and compare it with a genuine pair.
>>
>>59613482
Not fucking with you, i do find it interesting.
Not sure how normal it is, i do know a fellow musician who is a synesthete, but she always see the same colors for the same notes, maybe musical instruction changes how one percives visual, makes sense, some people see colors and shapes in letters, but that requires knowing how to read first.

Interesting that your visuals are not consistent, do you see anything when not stoned?

Definitely fakes. How to tell them apart:

>3 screws per side on the inside of the headband instead of 4
>no metal-colored lining around the cable socket, no cable locking mechanism
>earpads don't tuck in neatly in the cups (pleather visible around the edges)
>cable looks different from the original

So, I've got a bit a checklist for what I'm looking for in an amp. It's fairly particular, so I won't be surprised if this doesn't exist. I'm looking for:

-dedicated power cord (not run off usb)
-Digital Optical port in
-Aux in
-1/4" output

I'm willing to concede the dedicated power for an amp with a rechargeable battery. The Mixamp Pro seems to be the closest bet so far, but it runs off usb and I just don't really have the spare port. I probably won't be taking it out of my house, so portability isn't necessary, but I won't mind either way.

Thanks, guys.

I've heard people have glitches with it on Windows 7, and works well on Windows 10. To do with windows' drivers for usb class1 audio.

You can always work that around by using your motherboard as a DAC, chained to the line in.
>Does anyone recommend an amp/DAC within a similar price range that's just as good if not better?
I don't know anything better (specs-wise) that's both dac+amp and usb powered.
>>
>>59617173
That would be a downgrade, both in specs and sound.

An anon around here has actually tried both side by side.

>drivers for usb class1 audio
Is there ea fix for it
>>
Does changing the earpads on headphones really have all that much of an impact on sound?
>>
>>59617230
I've never used the fulla2 with Windows 7, so I haven't researched that. There's likely some driver you can manually install rather than use windows' bundled drivers.

In any event, you can easily discard the fulla2 being the actual issue, by trying them on Linux, OSX or win8+.

If you confirm the fulla2 is ok and you can't find a driver that works well on Windows 7, perhaps use the line in with the computer's own DAC.
>>
>>59617248
Yes, velour and angled pads usually change the sound more than other kinds.

Bend the headband in the middle. You have to do it with every Superlux headphone that uses that headband. Same goes for the Samsons. Read before you buy products

Can I live without some of these audio things (apart from virtual audio cable and fulla schiit)

plugging my headphones directly into my tv gives me annoying static and beep boop noises.

My dac/amp is usb only so i cant use that. Any thing i can buy to get cleaner sound?

A dac with a optical input, like the fiio d3

Meh. If I didn't bother with EQ, I would've never gotten the HD 800. It downright sounds worse to me than some of the more affordable options but it does what it does very consistently and lends itself as a perfect candidate for equalization. After that it doesn't sound like an HD 800. Past the sound aspect, it's all around a nice product to use and genuinely the most comfortable headphone I've had. Guaranteed quality, self serviceable to an extent and I got a good deal for on mine. Also holds its value decently well if I ever want to sell mine.

>instrumental
There's no tie in between music and headphone response. Genres and individual tracks present way too many variables here to generalize it. Music is the art that is supposed to be colored and lively, not the headphones. If the music fails at it, it's not the headphone's job to fix it that. Not to mention how pointless it would be to try. It's futile given the variation in music and the fact that you basically only have an equalizer to work with. Mastering is more complex than that. For every track you might "fix" with some kind of colored response, there are a thousand others you ruin.

I see coloration as something that only takes away from the art. I don't want to listen to my gear and thus to me there is no value in having multiple headphones with different sound signatures. A single good one is the best that you can do, imo, so my solution to achieve this was HD 800 and EQ.

I want to add how comical a lot of HD 800 reviews and impressions on the internet are. To me they compliment things where the headphones fail and rarely get into the aspects which it does exceptionally well. You can almost never avoid reading the mythical nonsense about "detail retrieval", "speed", "transparency" and unrelated talk about being best paired with some specific type/price of "upstream" gear including ones behind the amplifier. There is a Mt. Everest of crap to shuffle through. Or perhaps I'm just a shit-for-ears?
>>
>>59616993
I'm >>59616728.

They don't sound alike at all. Maybe if you simplify things to the extreme then yes you can say that both share a somewhat V-shaped sound signature but that's where the similarity ends.
>>
>>59617119
>Does anyone recommend an amp/DAC within a similar price range that's just as good if not better?

Chord Mojo despite looking like a plastic piece of crap sounds very good for the asking price. It also runs on battery so you can connect it to your smartphone.
>>
>>59617744

EQ is not even needed with a simple resonator mod. You have to hand credits to Sennheiser engineers for designing such a simple fix that tackles the glaring treble issues without a major overhaul.

On the subject of better upstream gears, they sound livelier with the HDVD 800 than my old Magni/Modi combo. The difference is palpable enough that I can A/B the two units blindly without too much trouble: bass is an easy tell tall sign, more details and impact with the HDVD 800 than the Magni/Modi combo.

>>

>>59617992
It'd probably help if you told us what TV you have, or what audio outputs are available for it (other than what seems like a headphone jack)

Also, what source are you using for media (like a computer connected to the TV), and is it possible to connect your headphones to that instead?
>>
>>59616002
Because it has MARBLES
>>
>>59616035
You understand burning in a circuit is not the same as burning in a headphone right?

You burn in electronics to make sure they won't fail. All good manufacturers do this.
>>
>>59617314
Theyre just drivers from old shit. Why do you care? They dont mean anything.
>>
>>59617347
An amp with line in (like the fulla2). Or a dac with optical in (like the modi 2 uber).
>>
>>59617254
>perhaps use the line in with the computer's own DAC.
Wouldn't that mean you can't raise the volume using the Fulla and are just stuck with the PC volume, making it "just an amp"?
>>
>>59618093
the picture provided is the only input available, headphone jack and hdmi (from ps3, ps4, xbox one)
>can you connect to that instead
nope.
>>
>>59617881
Resonator is crude and nowhere near as powerful as just doing the exact same thing with EQ. The problem of HD 800 is more effectively fixed by adding gain centered around 2.5 KHz anyway, before the 6 KHz peak. Two birds, one stone.

>Schiit vs Sennheiser
HDVD 800's output impedance is 50 ohms(iirc), call the result lively or whatever. To me that makes the affordable Magni the better performer as a broad boost around 100 Hz is unwanted. If you crave for that tiny bit of extra warmth caused by low damping, you could just break out the EQ again or do the reverse, fix what the HDVD 800 potentially alters. I also wouldn't be surprised if Magni had lower noise floor but I have nothing to back that up other than the likelihood of it due to much more simplified signal path and less power.

I don't trust my own ears any more than someone else's. If I knew that two devices should be performing more or less the same yet I heard a difference I'd question my ability to listen and blame my brains before concluding there was a difference. Same thing to an extent even if I knew there could be a difference. Volume match and double blind it if you have the equipment to do that.

Meanwhile my phone drives these decently loud but with no headroom for EQ.
>>
>>59618484
You forgot to post the picture, but if you're only working with essentially just the headphone jack, you can always try adding ground loop isolator. They're only a few dollars, so its worth a try, imo.
>>
>>59616955
Are there any HD700 owners here?
>>
>>59618434
>Wouldn't that mean you can't raise the volume using the Fulla and are just stuck with the PC volume, making it "just an amp"?
You'd still get the gain from the amp (which adds a little volume) and the volume knob (which adds negative gain as you lower it).
>>
>>59617744
>I see coloration as something that only takes away from the art. I don't want to listen to my gear
That's silly though, your perception already has it's own coloration and a neutral signature is only neutral up to a certain point defines by a general measurement that doesn't hold true to all humans anyway, to think that by EQing you are not listening to the gear is like thinking Photoshop can make grass real, in the end it's still edited Kodak green you are perceiving.
That doesn't take away from art though, art doesn't end at the tip of the pen, but rather at the mind of the reader, some times not even then.
In most cases the musician's work end at recording, after that it's the engineer's take on se are listening to, creative editing, mixing etc, and sure, that too qualifies as art, but with most music in the world being produced to sound somewhat good from any gear, you could say that art is not lost from coloration, if anything you could say it's made to be perceived well enough in several hues.
>>
>>59617881
>than my old Magni/Modi combo.
Magni/Modi 1, are they? The specs have changed considerably in the v2. There's way more room, and less THD/IMD.
>>
>>59616728
good taste all around
>>
>>59617182
Your motherboard already has a DAC. Anything that you plug headphones into to hear any audio has a fucking DAC. You can't hear digital signals and that is why we use a DAC to turn a digital signal into an analog signal.

those seem to be aimed at car stereos but i imagine it might work with a tv.

when i googled i heard people saying to plug the tv into an isolated outlet to avoid ground loop or whatever. i tried pluggig into the outlet instead of the surge protector but no change (guess 'isolated' means nothing else plugged in that outlet which i cant do')

sure enough here in japan i cant ground things like my computer or the surge protector (dont ask) so i wonder if thats the cause....though my tv and consoles do not require grounding

ill try one of those at least thanks

If you got an air conditioner, chances are you have a ground terminal in the same room. You can wire all the grounds you need from there.
>>
>>59619053
oh it has its own special little plug and ground right next to it up next to the ceiling. even if i could stretch shit up there theres one room for one: the air conditioner. likewise they only provide grounds for washers and refridgerators.

probably risking something not grounding my pc, surge protector and second monitor but whatever

Not sure. Past headphones had lots of bass which was nice, but it was hard to hear the guitars, the voices and shit. So a sound signature that lets me hear everything well when I'm listening to rock?
