Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

t420s user here, best laptop I ever owned, I hope it will be my workhorse for another 3 years atleast.

Hope that will be true. Wish it has an ips panel instead.

So they were off from other lenovo laptop such as the ideapad line? I really want to mod my broken t420s with a better panel. Something that is 100% sRGB at least...
>>

Yup, really wish I had an IPS upgrade available, but the rest is ok, will get a new keyboard, ssd, battery and ultrabay battery soon, already have an ssd and i7 2620m, not much more i can upgrade, will prob get 16gb of ram, atm I have 8.

Hi!
I'm facing a problem with my t450, It can't boot on internal battery. When using external battery and the latter is fully discharged my computer shuts down (no switching). However BAT0 (internal) is well displayed by tlp. The status is always "unknown threshold effective" but the charge level is below threshold.
I tried to hard reset pushing the emergency button, reset bios to default, and opened the cover to disconnect/reconnect internal battery, without success. Have you ever heard of this issue ?
>>
>>59573377
Also it can boot on AC, but if I unplug it, it shuts down instantly.
>>
>>59573391
In addition, this situation only happens when external battery is removed.
>>
what would consider to be the best laptop on the market right now if you just want to play games and stream content ?

I'm totally gonna buy a refurb T420. I crave the Thinkvantage. I'm gonna do it, guys.
But one question.

Will I be able to run Windows 7 (or Windows 10 if I can't get 10 off the hard drive reasonably)'s filesystem fairly fast, be able to do processing of documents, and browsing the web without any hitches if I just keep the system as stock as I can? In terms of software used, that is. No weird "debloatifying" shit, no strange chinese bitminers or whatever the fuck. Keeping it simple.

Will I be tearing out my hair in frustration at the slowness of an i5 8GB[RAM] T420? I think I'll have a decent time personally, but I just need confirmation from a bunch of random anonymous users on /g/ who one hundred percent of the time are telling the truth and know what they're talking about. DEFINITELY.

It's not even that big of a expenditure, at a measly CAD$~280-300. But... I don't want it to be for nothing.
>>
>>59575936
are you 12, if those aren't pretty respectable specs to you?

it will run basic tasks just fine no matter the OS
>>
>>59575898
>What do?
dump the whore
>>
>>59575987
Oh, no, they're reasonable to me. I've just had broken hardware, or at least I think, for a lot of my life. So, as a reference point for 8GB of ram, it seems pretty slow to me because it was defective ram. And the only other processor(s) I've had: i3 from long ago, AMD A10 trash piece of shit that keeps overheating...

I'm looking to either trash or sell my old laptops and replace my current primary laptop with the T420.

I do have a Latitude E6410, as well. That runs Linux. Or, rather, ran Linux. I accidentally my inodes, and have yet to fix that shit, but I digress
I'm just so fucking fed up with never having a proper system to work with. I've always had faulty hardware, and it's always driven me insane.
I just want fresh. I want something that works as it is intended. My worst nightmare would probably be something faulty in the refurb job... but either way.

i5 is fine. I don't need an i7. i5 can perform good. Yes, with accurate certainty, an i5 shall do my tasks for me with barely a hitch or stop.

Thanks lad
>>
>>59576056
also get a ssd
>>
>>59576107
Oh, definitely. I'll see if I can pull up my history for the exact listing I was looking at. It may be that the CAD$400 one was the one with an SSD... but hey, TP's are very easy to swap parts and shit so it shouldn't matter.

>>
Can someone explain to me the vgabios/coreboot situation? From what I understand, you need to backup your unique vgabios before flashing coreboot, otherwise your thinkpad won't be able to boot OSes which require graphics at boot time (eg windows or ubuntu) is this true? If so how do I backup my vgabios?
>>
>>59576010
>>59576970
The options I have for her are x260, macbook something and the xps 13.
I don't trust her with a macbook, I'm sure she will break it or it will get stolen. But it is the only one that is pink.
I'm sure the x260 is the best one for programming (has the best keyboard) and most reliable but how can I convince her to get it?
>>
Why is this shit allowed?
>>
>>59577054
dumb gooks, that's why
>>
>>59577037
She's best getting the macbook
and you are going to sperg out and break up with her.

The Macbook is probably going to be a hell of a deal with her student discount (email) and extended apple care warranty.
The macbook will hold value more than the x260 will.

Also you saying the X260 is best for programming is subjective. Because literally anyone can code on any computer. Used IBM ThinkPads were recommended for coding in pre 2009 era times.

Though I do agree the macbook would most wanted to get stolen
>>
>>59576675
>and move into the xx30 series
>xx30 series
>hotter and louder vs xx20
>cant use non-genuine batteries
>shit keyboard
>you need chips and hardware programmers and shit to flash an unlocked bios

the official thinkpad hierarchy of actually good recommended models should be

T60/61/X200/X201 and whatever older models
>powergap
X220,T420
>powergap (actually not quite a power gap so much as a battery gap)
T440s,T540p and newer models.

*convertibles and W series are excluded for now

there are literally zero(0) reasons to recommend the XX30 series, the same way XX10 aren't recommended.

Fow how long do you think t420's will be usable as every day drivers?
I am an owner of t420s so im legit wondering.
>>
>>59576970
Which ones would you recommend? I have roughly 1500 to spend for a good laptop for programming work, but I'd also like to play games on it. Touch display is not needed, a good amount of ram would be nice for projects. Not new and graphically difficult games, but I'd not like to have an integrated gpu.
>>
>>59577161
Why is the xx30 series hotter and louder than xx20 anyway? Shouldn't they be cooler, since Ivy Bridge is 22nm compared to Sandy Bridge which is 32nm?
>>
>>59577203
It really depends on your personal daily driver needs.

It probably won't stop handling normal office stuff, normal websites and normal media playback anytime soon. Many years it should work.

Of course, it might break down - but that would likely be fixable. And maybe we'll get a new media format that won't work as nicely as desirable.

I still use an X60 as a daily driver and it works fine, and that is a 10 year old laptop. I do however need to compromise some: some really heavy 1080p files might not play, but 720p or even lower is ok anyway due to the screen. Sometimes I might encounter a bit of lag using some heavy website, but this isn't even common.
>>
>>59577218
I typically don't like recommending computers I never tried. Newer computers can have the risk of having quality control issues.

We'd probably recommend a Lenovo P50, HP Z-Book or Dell's new Precision.
But the moment you said gaming, isn't even worth bothering because it's gonna end up as 'wow the mobile version of this GPU sucks!' or "I don't want a quadro or firepro gpu'
>>
>>59577161
why in the mother of fuck you recommend the XX40 series?, dude..the ultranav is gone on these

the XX30 is just an step from the XX20, ivy bridge, which is smaller and cooler and the chiclets.

By gaming I mean that it will run games decent enough while plugged in on medium settings. By work I meant that the battery should run more than 4 hours. I don't care about gpus, as long as it isn't an integrated one. Also, weight is a non issue.

Did Lenovo just massively downgrade the cooling system in the Tx30 series or something? Because the T530 runs hotter than the T520 as well, yet Ivy Bridge is a smaller design on a newer process node (therefore should run cooler).

Well the macbook has much more better battery life, a smaller size, a glossy 16:10 12" screen, one USB port, but has Core-M processors.

P50 is bigger, heavier, less battery life but will most likely have better processing and graphics.

However! The part where people essentially say 'mac is better' is because most industry standards use mac for Pro Tools, Logic Pro, & Photoshop.
There are some who use Windows variants of photoshop, Sony vegas, and other shit but you have the 'industry elitist' when it comes to firms preferring someone with mac equipment.

I've been in the market for a ThinkPad for a while now and I might finally purchase one today. Here are my options, if I could get some (objective) feedback on my choices that'd be nice. Go into this knowing that I've used ThinkPads before but never owned one, so the keyboard styles & the touchpad vs.physical TrackPoint buttons argument applies a lot less for me, as I would be okay with either. Anyways here's my choices-

T410 ThinkPad #1:
$185.00 (Money back guarantee, manufacturer refurbished)
i5 2.4GHz, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, DVDRW
T410 ThinkPad #2:
$150 (No guarantee, Craigslist listing looks mildly sketchy)
i5 2.67GHz, 8GB RAM, 275GB HD (I assume it's an SSD? Listing doesn't specify), also pictures don't show a charger or an OEM Windows disc.
This one seems shady, maybe stolen. emailed the guy for more info.
X230 ThinkPad:
$280 (possibly negotiable)
IPS Screen, i5 2.6GHz, 256GB SSD, 8 GB RAM
This listing is weird, it says "Windows 7 Professional Factory Restored" yet all the pictures show Windows 10. Maybe just a typo? Should I be worried? Aside from that, I'm really leaning towards this one.
T440 ThinkPad Touch:
$299
i5-4300U 2.9GHz, 8GB RAM, 180GB SSD
I don't give a shit about touchscreens, but this one seems like a solid choice, also out of all the craigslist ones this seems the most legit, comes with everything, great pictures. The price is a little bit too high, maybe I could get some money knocked off.

Anyways, sorry for the long post. I'd love to get some feedback, I've actually never owned a laptop so this is a first for me.

But 88 is way closer to 85 than 100 is. The difference is so small it comes down to the thermal paste, ambient temperature and the amount of dust on the fan.

They both have 35W TDP CPUs. The coolers are pretty much identical and the cases are almost identical as well. I refuse to believe that the difference in temperature between two similarly specced xx20 and xx30 models can be that substantial.

It looks like an improved version of the E7440, which I've had two i7 16GB RAM models of, which i've liked quite a bit.

The E7450 looks like a haswell version of the E7440, has a darker aluminum finish and looks like they might of tidied up a few parts of the keyboard.

Looks good, be sure to get the FHD model (you can upgrade to 1080p w/o needing to buy a cable), these have soldiered on CPUs, but have RAM removable as well as mSATA and 7mm SATA ports.

Sold both E7440s for $400 and $320, paid $260 and $350.

They are built fairly firm for an ultrabook, recommended.

The T530 and T520 came with much better screens even at the same resolution. So go for either of those or maybe even an x220 or x230.

NO lenovo insisted on putting the shittest possible 14" panels available on the market in the t420/t430. The HD+ moniker refers to the 1600x900 resolution of the panel

I've heard FHD is basically cancer with Windows 7 because of the scaling. W10 shouldn't have this problem, but I don't want to be part of the botnet. What do /g/

oooo i don't think it's a good idea recommending any egpu setup to a dude who wants ~*MAXXED OUT GAMING*~ on a laptop. The problem being solved by an egpu is:
>need a game to run on this old-ass laptop, that an hd 3000 would otherwise laugh and spit on
>medium quality is ok
>30 frames is ok
>friend gave me his old 950
>i don't want to spend more than $100 on this dumb project

not:

like, i got overwatch running 60 fps on medium on my x220 with the $50 adapter, $10 power brick, and a 750ti i already had in the parts drawer. stock new vegas on ultra runs [a shitload of fps] not bad for a 6 year old laptop that was never really meant to play games in the first place. gotta temper expectations and understand that mobile computing is an exercise in managing compromises.

p.s. 1050ti and other 10-series are NOT the cards to use. recent drivers are fucky

The main things you'll notice using are that the home/end keys get put in the top row, page up/down to the left and right of the up arrow key (replacing the back/forward keys) and the fn media shortcuts get moved from the arrow keys to the F# keys.

For me it's just harder to use the home and end keys without looking, but otherwise I don't mind the changes. A lot of it can just be set to key combinations easily enough anyway.

What I meant is that laptops are very expensive here anyway, might've well just shell out a bit extra if it comes with 12 months of warranty and is from a reputable webshop.

I've looked around for the same configuration on refurbished websites, but prices are basically the same with a margin of maybe 50 euros (including the 240 GB SSD and a FHD screen).

I plan to use this laptop intensively for 2-5 years, I don't think that 200 euros is that much of a difference if it isn't kaput within 2 years.

Depends on what you're doing with your machine.

If it's for desktop thread shitposting and messing around with I'd put Arch/Gentoo/Free or OpenBSD on it.

Follow up post from before, stuck them in and it worked like a charm! Thanks to everyone who replied.

Also, forgot I had stuck an SSD in that laptop, so that's now in my R400 as well.

So, with those two massive upgrades, I'm also planning to get a new CPU in here, a it's only going to cost ÂŁ5 for the pleasure and a bit of waiting for it to arrive from China.

It needs a new nipple, and the windows key is missing, but as I'm running xubuntu on it, that's right at the bottom of my list of priorities.

Oh, and a new battery, hopefully a 9 cell, but will settle for a new 6 cell over the used 3cell shit it currently has. But, overall... very happy indeed with my new baby.

Sorry, I didn't mean it as that.
tp.krelay is a very good place to start off for MTM research.
I've used it to source UXGA T60's and T4x machines. Basically the site is a backup of IBM/Lenovo MTM lookup, so really it isn't their fault, just IBM or Lenovo didn't put notes that it should of.

Another thing to do is checking the Hardware Maintenance Manual (HMM for short) or the TAbook/PSREF (product specifications reference), they have MTM configurations and will be a more of a helpful use.
It doesn't have the one you are looking for in particular, but it does have some MTMs with displays that are 'premium', which I presume are IPS.

best of luck!

>just IBM or Lenovo didn't put notes that it should of
Mkay, now that explains it.

Speaking of what krelay "knows" and what it doesn't - what eras does it cover?
I think I once tried to look up a T440p and got nothing.
>>
couple of days some anon mentioned to get a 135w ac adapter for my t430

mah nigga, just hit 100c with 30 min of mass effect 2, 30 mins of occt at 101c restarted both times, 5400m is still present. going on two days now, got my fucking fingers crossed.
>>
>>59595775
How did you manage to do that in the first place?
And what thinkpad is that?

x220

The usb stick was in the machine when the machine got roughed into a wall nook by my dog jumping on my bed. It was a really poor series of events. I've taped over the opening to keep shit from getting into the computer, though I'm unsure if thats even necessary.

>>
>>59595932
step one - remove those fucking stickers
>>
>>59595920
Can't you just replace the port?
>>
>>59595920
brah, make sure that none of those pins are touching each other. think about it, you have a +5v running wild in there, guess what could happen.

get some tweezers and break those pins off completely
>>
I think I want a t430 unless someone talks me out of it, any recommendations on where get one in good shape?
>>
>>59595775
Turn the thing off, remove the main battery, get some tweezers and remove the remaining pins. As long as the pins are not contacting metal, you can use the laptop.

Not sure what laptop you have, but some of these USB ports are daughter boards that can be replaced.

>>59595780
I think they cover most T20 to T431s models.
It was a backup before lenovo changed their MTMs layout and removed the previous system that was in place. Because the characters aren't in the 7 alphanumerical format anymore xxxx-xxx after 2013, but now a 10 character one which is kinda tough to read.

>>59595816
Why do you need a 135W adapter? They should only need 90W, I don't know anything about this.

If anything I would raise the bottom of the laptop or use one of those laptop base coolers.

>>59595997
Buy them from Arrow Direct.
>>
Would I regret buying an x220 in a very nice condition over a x230 that's a little banged up? I feel like I'd be missing out on the usb 3.0 ports unless that's something that could be upgraded in the x220
>>
>>59596110
You can get Expresscard to USB3 adapter. so, no.
>>

>So did the seller get a handy or what? (;
Used both hands
>The touchpad can be swapped for $30.
Really? That's awesome. I didn't think this touchpad would bother me very much but it's already starting to bug me. Mind pointing me in the right direction for a replacement touchpad/a how-to install guide?
>If this is your first ThinkPad, enjoy it very well.
So far so good! SSD is quite small in this thing (180GB), so I'll need to figure out what to do about that. I'm honestly considering just carrying around some flash drives with this thing and using them as semi-permanent storage for now until I feel like getting a bigger drive.

So for anything **4* onwards I should use the Lenovo lookup?

>>

Aww I wish I was that seller now. <3

I've been seeing new 480GB as low as $120, sometimes below that during clearance.

I think $50 will net you a used 256GB SSD if you wait long enough.

I thought I uploaded a video of the trackpad removal process... guess i didnt.

>>59596532
Basically yes.

>>59596585
Damn, even the plastic behind it?
yeah it should be useable.
RIP usb.

How accurate is the track point? Is it better that the trackpad efficiency wise?

It's 100 times better than any trackpad and much more accurate.
Why do you think pilots use joysticks, not trackpads?
Too bad companies stopped putting them on
laptops because niggers couldn't figure out how to use them.
That's why it's the white man's pointing device.
>>
>>59597421
Does it take a lot of time to get used to?
>>
>>59597465
A bit, it took me like a day or two to use my thinkpad's trackpoint well. It's really just a micro joystick so it's not very complicated.
