Here some thoughts:

- bash can do more than you may imagine, but to be lightweight, most features like extended globbing and all that is not enabled by default, if you want to switch for globbing or a colored ps1, stick to bash and read the manpage

- most people use zsh because it's shilled as fuck by macfags who are faced with an outdated bash shell on their macs, so they switch to a "better" shell instead of updating to a current bash

- zsh has some improvements, that allows to do things with the shell only, where at bash you'd need an external program, for example floating point math

- with oh-my-zsh and simliar extensions you get lots of premade aliases and autocompletitions, which are useful when you are new, but bloat when you already know what you are doing

- writing zsh scripts may force others to install zsh in order to run your scripts

- zsh is mit licensed, while bash is gpl

- scripts should be written portable, which means either posix/sh compatible or bash scripts

- using zsh for interactive mode and bash for writing scripts did nothing wrong

Yes.
The syntax is exactly the same as bash but it's got a few useful features that you can't get on bash.

These are the norm, most distributions ship precompiled binaries.

Only a few like Gentoo or Sourcemage are source code based.
>>
>>59541282
I personally dislike the terms "binary based" and "source based" since they are all source based. There should be better terms to distringuish systems like debian and gentoo imho, since theres nothing stopping a user to build from source and use a package on any other distro.

well, when I install program X on debian, it's based on the source code of program X-dev, which makes it souce based

binary based would mean that a program is based on a binary instead of source code

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as piracy, is in fact, unauthorized copying, or as I've recently taken to calling it, unauthorized sharing. Piracy is not the act of obtaining an unauthorized copy of a copyrighted work, but rather robbery or criminal violence at sea.

Many computer users make unauthorized copies every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the act which is widely performed today is often called piracy, and many of the people who do it are not aware that it is basically copying, and not stealing.

There really is a piracy, and some people are doing it, but it is just robbery at sea. Piracy is an act of theft: an action at sea in which goods are forcefully transferred from one ship to another. Piracy is important to be aware of, but unrelated to unauthorized copying; it can only function at sea. Piracy is normally not used in combination with unauthorized copying: the two acts are basically seperate. All the so-called piracy is really unauthorized copying.

since ubuntu is heading towards the same path as windows ( prioritizing/enhancing tablet experience ), I might have to find another distro for my daily driver.

It's somewhat similar to having a USB device that is connected to the VM via a USB filter. You'll need 2 GPUs and 2 monitors. The host will display on one GPU and the guest will on the other. You'll also need a separate keyboard and mouse for the VM (or a KVM switch I guess)

You can't use applications like VirtualBox and VMware Workstation to do this because those are all about the concept of the VM sending frames through a network interface to be displayed in a window, which is nice for using the same keyboard and mouse but sucks performance wise.

They'll be packaged as python-module or python3-module. Pick your poison depending on which version of Python you use to run the script.

You can also install via pip but as it seems you don't know much about Python (I'd encourage you to find out what those scripts are doing completely), I'd say just stick to your package manager.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

The expression “the Linux kernel” can easily be misunderstood as meaning “the kernel of Linux” and implying that Linux must be more than a kernel. You can avoid the possibility of this misunderstanding by saying or writing “the kernel, Linux” or “Linux, the kernel”.

No, Richard, it's 'Linux', not 'GNU/Linux'. The most important contributions that the FSF made to Linux were the creation of the GPL and the GCC compiler. Those are fine and inspired products. GCC is a monumental achievement and has earned you, RMS, and the Free Software Foundation countless kudos and much appreciation.
Following are some reasons for you to mull over, including some already answered in your FAQ.
One guy, Linus Torvalds, used GCC to make his operating system (yes, Linux is an OS -- more on this later). He named it 'Linux' with a little help from his friends. Why doesn't he call it GNU/Linux? Because he wrote it, with more help from his friends, not you. You named your stuff, I named my stuff -- including the software I wrote using GCC -- and Linus named his stuff. The proper name is Linux because Linus Torvalds says so. Linus has spoken. Accept his authority. To do otherwise is to become a nag. You don't want to be known as a nag, do you?
(An operating system) != (a distribution). Linux is an operating system. By my definition, an operating system is that software which provides and limits access to hardware resources on a computer. That definition applies whereever you see Linux in use. However, Linux is usually distributed with a collection of utilities and applications to make it easily configurable as a desktop system, a server, a development box, or a graphics workstation, or whatever the user needs. In such a configuration, we have a Linux (based) distribution. Therein lies your strongest argument for the unwieldy title 'GNU/Linux' (when said bundled software is largely from the FSF). Go bug the distribution makers on that one. Take your beef to Red Hat, Mandrake, and Slackware. At least there you have an argument. Linux alone is an operating system that can be used in various applications without any GNU software whatsoever. Embedded applications come to mind as an obvious example.
>>
>>59548215
>>59551044

Next, even if we limit the GNU/Linux title to the GNU-based Linux distributions, we run into another obvious problem. XFree86 may well be more important to a particular Linux installation than the sum of all the GNU contributions. More properly, shouldn't the distribution be called XFree86/Linux? Or, at a minimum, XFree86/GNU/Linux? Of course, it would be rather arbitrary to draw the line there when many other fine contributions go unlisted. Yes, I know you've heard this one before. Get used to it. You'll keep hearing it until you can cleanly counter it.
You seem to like the lines-of-code metric. There are many lines of GNU code in a typical Linux distribution. You seem to suggest that (more LOC) == (more important). However, I submit to you that raw LOC numbers do not directly correlate with importance. I would suggest that clock cycles spent on code is a better metric. For example, if my system spends 90% of its time executing XFree86 code, XFree86 is probably the single most important collection of code on my system. Even if I loaded ten times as many lines of useless bloatware on my system and I never excuted that bloatware, it certainly isn't more important code than XFree86. Obviously, this metric isn't perfect either, but LOC really, really sucks. Please refrain from using it ever again in supporting any argument.
Last, I'd like to point out that we Linux and GNU users shouldn't be fighting among ourselves over naming other people's software. But what the heck, I'm in a bad mood now. I think I'm feeling sufficiently obnoxious to make the point that GCC is so very famous and, yes, so very useful only because Linux was developed. In a show of proper respect and gratitude, shouldn't you and everyone refer to GCC as 'the Linux compiler'? Or at least, 'Linux GCC'? Seriously, where would your masterpiece be without Linux? Languishing with the HURD?
>>
>>59551051
>>59551044
>>59548215

If there is a moral buried in this rant, maybe it is this:
Be grateful for your abilities and your incredible success and your considerable fame. Continue to use that success and fame for good, not evil. Also, be especially grateful for Linux' huge contribution to that success. You, RMS, the Free Software Foundation, and GNU software have reached their current high profiles largely on the back of Linux. You have changed the world. Now, go forth and don't be a nag.
Thanks for listening.

Guys how do I add a file into a Linux LiveCD from Windows?
Here's the situation:
>old device whose make had a market lifetime of about a month
>obscure network card not supported out of the box by seemingly any distribution out there
>unauthorized to access the local ethernet
>only one USB drive, and it's some shitty one that can't house more than one partition
>would just install linux and then get network support after the installation is finished but can't, need network support on the liveCD itself because it won't install right without the network, it needs to be able to install updates during the installation or else grub installation fails because it turns out my hard drive is also obscure

How serious is the fact that Mint is compromised? I need a babbies first GNU/Linux and this was going to be my go to but after reading the installgentoo page I noticed that Mint is apparently "compromised", whatever that means. I'm not really sure what else to start with. My plan generally is to wade into GNU/Linux relatively slowly since I've pretty much given up on video games and would like to become more savvy in terms of modern information technology. I don't mind spending an hour, maybe two per day as I learn things, but I simply can't reasonable spend enormous blocks of time learning and trying new things.

Is it safe to just say "fuck it" and install Mint anyway? I have an old thinkpad I don't use any more and i'm not planning to do anything serious or keep any sensitive data on it while I experiment and learn. Am I just being a bitch and I should try a different OS like debian?
>>
>>59552371
Mint is basically Ubuntu optimized for Cinnamon which is a shit DE anyway imo. Just install any *ubuntu if this is your first time with GNU/Linux

You can install everything that's on Mint on normal Ubuntu. There is no "optimization" whatsoever. Stop spreading myths and misinformation.
Next you're going to mention how OpenSUSE has the best KDE experience and how Fedora has the best GNOME experience. It's not an RPG game retards.

Will plugging a USB flash drive infected with malware specific for Windows OS, into GNU/Linux machine can affect it in some way?
As far as I know there's no way for windows malware to run on linux even if you have wine installed unless you run the malware yourself, and even then it will have varying degree of success, and will most likly infect the wine prefix only.
>>
>>59553419
if the usb drive is a 'drop', its likely to contain malware for all system OSes
>>
>>59553450
>if the usb drive is a 'drop'
No, it's not dead drop.
It's personal USB flash drive that got infected from different computer.
The main reason I'm asking, a friend of mine told "Mac can't get be infected with Winodws malware, while linux can because it have wine".
>>
>>59553466
>"Mac can't get be infected with Winodws malware, while linux can because it have wine"
that's stupid, wine is available on macos as well
>>
>>59553466
In that case, no and yes. it could do muck about whatever user the drive mounted as/under. but root system should be safe.
>>
>>59553476
I know that, which is way I'm asking.
Although usually when I clean an infected USB, I boot from puppy linx CD then delete the malware, never got infected.
Or I use my phone and delete it.

So it's safe (relatively) to plug USB flash drive infected with windows malware to a machine running linux? even if wine is installed on it?
>>59553507
You mean as long as the drive is not mounted it should be safe?
>>
>>59553520
>So it's safe (relatively) to plug USB flash drive infected with windows malware to a machine running linux? even if wine is installed on it?
yea, especially if you don't have windows exe's configured to run with wine automatically (not usually the case)
>>
>>59553520
>as the drive is not mounted it should be safe?
some malware modifies the pendrive to identify as a keyboard or other device instead of storage. in which case you have no choice in if it mounts or not.
>>
>>59553535
>windows exe's configured to run with wine automatically
Not him, but I thought all USB maleware require autorun.inf to work?
>>
>>59553557
autorun.inf hasn't been run automatically in windows for a long time, iirc XP first made it so it popped up as an option, but didn't run anything unless you click on it yourself
>>
>>59553571
So how does new malware run then?
>>
>>59553579
idk, i haven't run into malware for about as long

outside of people running dodgy shit themselves, of course. like fake emails with executable attachments, which you can mostly avoid if you know what you're doing
>>
>>59553579
Shortcuts..
Like this
/USB/foo.pdf -hidden
/USB/malware.vbs -hidden
/USB/foo.pdf.lnk -links to the malware

Do most Linux distros generally work well with laptop docks? Specifically I have an Elitebook and I use Linux Mint. It would be great if a dock worked with this thing, but I don't want to waste money if it won't since my laptop is Linux only.
>>
>>59553911
Depends on the dock and how it works.

I know with the older thinkpad docks, they're port replicators. The dock is just a bunch of electrical connections to hot pluggable ports on the back of the dock, so no software support required. Docking is equivalent to just plugging all that shit in at once.

But I don't know about Elitebook docks...

Ofc there are retards who install it for "hacking ma neighbours wifi LOL", but that's not the reason why Kali exists. Kali is actually convenient when you want to do some serious pentesting and don't want to change thousands of system settings and apply kernel patches on your own system.

Hey

How can I split it in bash into two variables, such as:

If $tmp is 1 2, how can I get two variables that would be like $tmp1 is 1 and $tmp2 is 2 ?

better:
man bash | less -p 'Parameter Expansion'

It looks better when formatted.

# cut (f)ield 2, (d)elimited by space.
