IRC: #/tpg/ on irc.rizon.net

Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

OK /tpg/, I'm looking at a brand new, boxed and sealed X230 (IPS, i5, 4GB/500GB) for £300. Would love a non seamen stained chinkpad... Is this a fair price?

Feeling like replacing my X220 this year, might buy a T470. TP Classic will be too expensive.

What could go wrong? I don't mind the new keyboard layout, though it is disappointing.
>>
>>59515172

Any reason you want to go bigger, x270 looks legit? I'd go x1 carbon Gen5 tho, for the small footprint 14".
>>
>>59515368
X270 uses an old as fuck chassis at this point, it's a recycled X240.

X1C looks fucking amazing but it's expensive and hard to repair. I guess the downsides of the T470 is the shitty 1080p IPS panel and only x2 NVMe.

Just got my hands on an X220, I love it, the screen is so damn nice, I had an X61 before which I used as a daily machine till this day.

A uncommon mod yes, I wouldn't say its 'rare' though.

Very good price, I mean it is brand new! You may need a fresh new battery though, just sayin.
>tfw that new thinkpad metal smell sealed away

>>59515401
X1C2 and X1C3 were actually fairly easy to open and to replace the motherboard.
Just parts are expensive, and maybe fixing a broken touchscreen may be difficult because of the glass.

>>59515744
Best 4:3?
Modded T601p (T61 mobo) with maybe a Core 2 Extreme
Or X61 w/ T9300 (T9500 might of been an option) and a SXGA+ IPS display if you can mod the cable.

TO THE ANONS HAVING PROBLEMS WITH DRIFT

yo replace the nub. the profile is likely gone, making you push it harder than it was ever designed for. This is causing the drift. You get used to pushing it harder over time because of very slowly developing wear. especially if you got the lappy second hand, and the previous owner also used the trackpoint.

>Yfw you have to set your sensitivity settings back 70% after getting a new nub.

>>59518724
I'm going to copy pasta this everytime some gook even mentions buying lel,no-vo's post **20 bullshit.

T460 owner here,

>Build quality
Alright compared to most laptops today
but absolute shit compared to the older (pre t420) thinkpads.
I've dropped my t460 2 times already, once on the edge with the battery.
This made one of the battery holding switches pop out and have the battery be losely held in place, and the screen slightly bent outwards because of malformed hinges.
Second time I dropped was game over, I pulled on a headphone cable and the laptop fell face down from a table about waist height.
This caused both hinges to break off the laptop, and the screen to eventually fail.
Compare this to my t40 which I have thrown multiple times across the room in fits of rage and still works perfectly.
The new thinkpad durability is shit.
>Keyboard
Even though all the nig/g/ers here complain about the new keyboard being the worst thing about the new thinkpads,
its actually quite good, and I would say much better for typing than the old t40 keyboard.
The t460 keyboard has much more clicker and responsive than the t40 keyboard,
and the spaced out keys give me much less mis-typed words.
The only thing that is better on the pre-t420 keyboards are the layout,
which is very important because everyone on /g/ is a professional video editor
that uses millions of key-shortcuts that all use the home, end, insert, and delete buttons.
>Screen
T460 screen was superb, I have the model which had the 1080p IPS display.
Screen was bright, colors were great, and the resolution was sharp.
However, all this does not matter if the screen is not attached to the computer anymore from a fall off a table.
There are older thinkpads that have screens that are on par (x220 IPS display)
or even better (t60 Boe-Hydis AFFS display) than the newer thinkpads.

(Continued)
>>
>>59518893
>Linux Support
Despite what everyone tells you, absolute shit.
Yeah, wifi drivers will work out of the box on even the most difficult of distros (Gentoo),
and graphics drivers too (no shit its intel HD graphics).
However, there are so many other fucking problems with linux on this shit.
The clit mouse is as hard as dehydrated shit to get working on.
You have to fuck around in the xorg.conf for a couple of hours with joystick variables to get the trackpoint to work.
And because of the oversized trackpad for nigger fingers, you have to disable it.
But guess what dipshit, even after you disable the trackpad,
if you put your palm on the trackpad while using the trackpoint like a normal person,
the trackpoint will zig zag like a shit headed fuck high on ASSSSSS.
So, you have to arch your hand like a fucking spider to use the trackpoint.

In short, the new thinkpad is as bad as /g/ers say on /tpg/, but not for the reasons they say.
Go get yourself a x220 or build yourself a t601f so you can be the most badass fucking shit in this thread,
and stay clear of the lenovo chinkshit chicken-shit bullshit.
Also by buying gook-no-vo's horseshit your supporting their new thinkpad design,
if every nig/g/er on this board stop buying this shit, lenovo might make a retro thinkpad to appease us and get our shekels again.

Toss a minimal OS on there and you have a light media (download, not stream) and development pkaybox. You probably don't want to install unstable nightly releases of shut you use and develope, so it's nice to have a cheap burner instead.

Yeah the x230's keyboard is much the same as the x240, though it can still swap in an x220 keyboard unlike the x240 (as far as I know)

The main practical difference between classic and chicklet keyboards is just the layout. Up to you which you prefer, though I personally feel like you're better off making good use of key combinations on both to save moving your hands as much. Other than that you probably won't notice much difference, they're both pretty good.

Going to upgrade my 2170p to an old ssd I have laying around, but I'm worried 240GB isn't going to be enough.

http://s.aliexpress.com/mARNv67r
>>
>>59523271
Whether it's enough depends entirely on how you use it. If you want to have your entire collection of chinese cartoons with your wherever you go, you might run into issues. Otherwise it's pretty manageable, just try it and see how quickly you get through it.

Using TN cards for storage isn't all that bad, but I wouldn't be in any huge rush to get one unless you're sure you can put it to good use if you find that you don't really need such a mild improvement in storage space anyway.
>>
>>59523450
I found a 64GB with kinda crappy transfer speeds for 20aud.

I use this laptop at work to help me stay awake so 240GB should be enough with careful management. It's just a worry though and $20 isn't much to spend in case I need a few extra GB on hand.

Well $300 is a rough conversion from local price and there is pretty much no price reference point, both W701 and 8740w are very very rare where I live, prices for other older 15-17" vary a lot and shipping from US to Russia would be $60-100

The W701 I've mentioned doesn't have a digitizer and otherwise has mid-low specs - Q820, 4GB, 2800M and plastic parts of the body are badly damaged, although display seems fine.
>>
>>59523562
You can just keep the data on the old HDD in tact and swap it back in if anything doesn't work out early on. Or even chuck the HDD in a caddy and leave it at work or something. Though $20 isn't too terrible, as long as it doesn't end up being redundant as soon as you find a better way of storing large amounts of data.
>>
>given some really old ThinkPads from a friend for free. (T43, 61p and x301).
>start using the x301 instead of currently damaged MacBook Pro (because it's the only one with usable specs)
>Love the keyboard, literally better than the t43 and 61. Mac is terrible in comparison. Build quality and trackpoint are amazing.

But sadly, the specs are just too shitty. Core 2 duo is too bad for programming, and the integrated GPU is way too shit for light gaymen such as csgo. I would love a similar exterior with modern specs, but it seems like the newer ones have a lot of problems. I would get a t420 but even that seems a little weak, as does the t430. Since budget isn't a problem (not going to pay out the ass like for a p70, but don't need to buy used) what's the most similar modern machine I can get? I don't need amazing specs, but I want good Linux support (only Intel wifi, fuck Broadcom). Given that Nvidia GPUs on Linux are a total waste of time, ideally I want good Intel graphics like an iris 520. So what modern ThinkPad should I get for good build/keyboard and good Linux support?

I'm looking for some good OS for an X220. One where I can use a lot of keyboard shortcuts for whatever I want to do, that is fast enough (I use an SSD but it's a micron C400, ain't the best stuff), do some mad browsing and shitposting, watch youtube videos, some virtualization and maybe virtual desktops because the resolution is pretty crappy. I'll be honest, what would bother me most would be losing screen real estate, I want to be comfortable within this low resolution. Would be nice if I got decent battery life out of it as well.

Which OS would you recommend?
>>
>>59523913
Is this cunt serious? T440s? Garbage battery and shit trackpad without clicking buttons
>>
>>59523993
Linux is very comfy for those tasks. Battery life is a little worse than windows. I'd recommend any flavour of Ubuntu or OpenSUSE if you're new to Linux. It is incredibly customisable. Keyboard shortcuts can do what ever you want. Virtualisation is great, virtual desktops are on most desktop environments. I'm a little biased because I use it myself, and really you'd get on just fine with any version of windows (othertl than 10). Linux can look better and is customisable, and also free.
>>
>>59524098
Ain't really new to linux, a few years ago I decided to tamper with both Debian and Arch which felt more like copypasting and finding solutions to fix shit so I'm kind of past that.

I'm wondering if Unity is taxing enough to make it sluggish, considering it uses compiz.

I also considered Windows 8.1 because it came with it and it was working pretty goddamned fast but I didn't put time measuring battery life on it.
>>
>>59523993
If you want to abuse shortcuts and virtual desktops then i3 might be worth trying.

>>
>>59524577
If you're able to use the lower weight without needing battery life then the T430s can make sense. Say, if you need to bring it back and forth between work and home every day but don't need to use it for more than a couple hours in between.

The T430 is definitely the most suitable for the majority of people though, and if you don't know what you want then go with it just because it's much more flexible.

Thanks for the tip. I currently use a X230. I was just wondering if there was any major drawback with the s model. The price gap between X230 and T430 is ridiculous, since they have the same hardware...It's one of the times where I'd wish to be an ameriburger
>>
>>59524701
>>59524620
I think the T430s looks bloody cool but it's such a shame that the CPU is soldered. I have an X230 and I want to move up at some point for a variety of reasons not limited to the eGPU RAM bug and display resolution, but if I were going to swap devices I would need a processor power increase as well to make it worth while. Instead I'd just go 3rd gen i7 to 3rd gen i7. With the regular T430 you can fit in a meaty, future proof quad core i7. :(

>>
>>59525360
Looking at benchmarks, performance advantages between the two are all over the place but 10 is maybe slightly better. If you want a very mild battery life improvement then 10 might be better, and I assume you might get some extra features as well.

The differences are so small though that I'd be going with 8.1 just out of personal preference, and to avoid 10's botnet.

>>59525533
There are utilities around to remove them, and I'm pretty sure they remove the telemetry completely. They can also outright block the updates from occurring so you'd be fine if you got that sorted from the start. The other option is just to not enable updates at all, which I did on my current desktop, but it isn't exactly wise especially if you want to connect to untrusted networks.

The prices are relatively close to the guide.
But no high specs are available though.
Most people who buys it, are tricked by the "CORE i5 is good for gaming" not knowing there are different gens of core i5.
And most of the accessories are generic chinks.
I got a 9 cell battery for T420, but it gave less than hour of battery life, I took it apart and there was this piece of metal to give it a weight.
No docks, No ExpressCards, No spare parts.
And can't order online.
Though people still shame you for not using apple products if you use thinkpads in public.

With that kind of budget you may as well get one of the lower end gaming laptops. Same modularity as the thinkpads, but your trading off build quality for performance.

I will give you one (((you))) if you recommend me a different laptop for roughly 1500€ that I can also play games on, and where the battery will last for a while for doing programming or writting.

I'd recomment a modern T series machine with dGPU. Those aren't really high end gaming laptops but they can handle it. Battery life is good in general. Older models will last you up to 9 hours from my experience, newer models are being advertised with up to 18 hours.

>>
Just checking out the new 70 series models.
Are... are they really still offering 1366x768 displays? That was a valid option in 2011 but come on a 1080p display isn't super high end and expensive today.
>>
>>59532449
Which one specifically? I haven't bought a laptop before. Also what's a dGPU?
>>
>>59532496
Its a keyboard silly, like a proper desktop keyboard

Dont do it, it's not the same as the laptop keyboard. It just feels like your average cheap rubberdome.
>>
>>59532590
Don;t listen to this guy, it's the same as the laptop keyboard +nipple
>>
>>59532535
>dGPU
dedicated GPU. It's basically a dedicated processor responsible for 3D graphics as opposed to an internal graphics solution that sits in the CPU.
>Which one specifically
Your budget is enough to be able to afford a T470 but I don't know if it's enough to get one with dGPU so I'd say you should go for a T460 if you want 14" or T560 if you want 15". Keep in mind that those use Ultrabook CPUs. If you want more performance you should look for T series with a p addition (T460p). These are a bit thicker, a bit heavier, a bit cheaper but offer more performance due to their higher powered CPUs.
>>
>>59532520
They're targeted towards businesses. Businesses where the one doing the purchasing is usually going to be a manager who doesn't have to use the same laptops anyway so they don't exactly care that the screens are eyecancer and just go with whatever's cheapest and thus makes them look better for saving money on the upfront cost.
>>
>>59532616
I know, it's been like this for years but nowadays it's just bullshit. You can't even justify a $10 difference in price between a 768p model and a 1080p model. Fucking hell, display panels are cheap.
>>
>>59532610
>>59532590

Even if it does feel bad its still got the touchpoint :)

Is 230€ a good price for a used x230 with 128gb ssd and 8gb ram?
>>
>>59532910
No, because x230's are dogshit and worth nothing.
>>
>>59532935
what would you recommend instead?
>>
>>59532977
X220 with an ips display, it might be possible to install a x230 mobo into a x220 so try it by buying a beat to shit x230 for like 30 bucks just for the mobo and installing it into an x220.
>>
>>59533055
So it's all about the display? Is the display of a x230 this much worse?
>>
>>59532827
But is the x1c powerful enough for photoshop? And 3d modeling stuff ?
>>
>>59532910
You could probably find that for like 30$ cheaper, but not too bad. Don't listen to that guy, X230 is a great laptop.
>>
>>59533169
I'm a eurofag and thinkpads are more expensive on this side of the great lake. So if I would buy this laptop for 230€ (~250$) I wouldn't be the biggest moron that ever lived?
>>
>>59533097
No, you can do the same ips mod to a x230,
its just that the durability and quality of the
x230 is much lower than the **20 series.
>>
>>59533263
But the x230 excels in performance, right? If I had to pay the same price for either a x220 or x230 which one should I choose?
>>
>>59533288
X220 because of better durability.
X230 only has slightly better cpu performance and slightly better efficency.
Its only the iGPU that is much better on ivy bridge (40% better),
which does not matter because:

A. Its only a 1366x768 display

B. People who buy thinkpads are not gamerfags
>>
>>59533263
Don't the X220 and X230 use much the same housing save for differences in the palm rest and similar areas to accommodate keyboard differences and the like?

>>59533288
Ivy bridge is a mild CPU improvement and substantial GPU improvement, and those also translate to battery life, though again it's minor. At the same price I'd go with the X230, the main downsides are the different keyboard (if you don't like it) and no chink batteries, so up to you if that's worthwhile for your needs.
>>
>>59533380
So if I want to play some games on it (nothing big) would the better iGPU matter?
>>
>>59533380
All the fucking improvements in a x230 wont matter if it will break down in a few months.

The x220's superior durability is worth more than the x230's ivy bridge bullshit.
>>
>>59533429
Depends on how big.

Emulation upto PS1, it'll run just fine.

They are always a lot more expensive than in the US. Used models are 50€-100€ more than in the US and new machines are up to 300€ more than in the US. There's no way of avoiding this. This goes for every laptop more or less.

With the XPS (I guess 13?) you'd get
>better screen

>lower quality keyboard with noticable bend

concerning performance, I think you mentioned earlier that you want to play games. On the XPS models there are only a few with dGPU though. I think you only get that on the XPS 15 and with that you wouldn't have any advantage in price. Also the XPS line is infamous for its coil whining problems.

I think read about this while researching before I bought this but I can't find the advice that dealt with it again.

How do I secure the screen. The only thing I have to hand is super glue but fuck that. I could drive and buy some double sided sticky pads or something.
