>This system beat the pants off DOS/Windows PCs in every aspect
No shit, it was a workstation, not an inexpensive fleet box for offices. They were in another league, and were never intended to compete with or usurp PCs in the wider market.
And as far as workstation vendors went, NeXT is one of the most successful of them all, as its main software products still survive to this day in the public eye while the likes of Solaris and HP-UX languish in oft-forgotten niches. The hardware was never going to last, it wasn't really that spectacular among workstations anyway, merely average at best.
>>59500795
That's true. However don't forget that NeXTstep was available for commodity x86 hardware later.
It could have easily become the standard for office PCs
I remember my first IT job. The company actually had customers running x86 NeXTstep.

>>59500852
>It could have easily become the standard for office PCs
Very doubtful. Most of its software base was academically focused, hardware support was lackluster, and it wasn't that good of a server/workstation platform either due to lack of multiprocessor support. Once NT came along it was all over.
That isn't to say it wasn't still a nice platform to use and look at, however.
>>59500898
"no"
>>59500993
Also all this is moot as quality was never why Microsoft ever got anywhere. If quality of product was the deciding factor then it would died to CP/M, OS/2, BeOS, Commodore, etc.

>>59500975
>those fat fucking chink hands
lmao
>>59501035
It doesn't matter if you gave your best effort at making a "quality" product if in reality it's utterly useless and can't accomplish what the customer shelling out thousands of dollars on it wants to do. You give too little credit to those who succeeded and too much to those who didn't, the truth lies in a balance between the two. Compatibility definitely rules all, because in the end a computer is a tool and not a virtuous lifestyle device, but to attempt to paint the victorious as evil, complacent kikes who did nothing but sit on their laurels is ludicrous.
Everything was nice in one way or another, and it would be better if we could see things the way they are, instead of pushing this bitter good vs. evil narrative that shits everything up.

iOS = Mac OS X = NeXTstep. A lot has been added over the years, but the second you start to develop for iOS or macOS you run smack into class names that start with NS.
Guess what NS stands for.

>You give too little credit to those who succeeded and too much to those who didn't, the truth lies in a balance between the two.
No, sorry, Microsoft deserves zero credit. They "succeeded" because IBM needed an outside vendor for their PC OS thanks to a DoJ decision against them. Billy's mommy knew people at IBM which led to the meeting where he lied and sealed the deal, then proceeded to BUY an x86 DOS from some poor sap because he couldn't build one fast enough to keep the wool over IBM's eyes.
IBM thought their BIOS was a stumbling block to clones...which it wasn't...and the clone vendors ran to Microsoft for DOS. Which started an ecosystem sustained by cheap hardware (clone vendors) and existing software (backwards compatibility).
Microsoft literally FELL into their position. They never produced anything worthy of it. Macintosh was better. Commodore Amiga was better. NeXT was better. Most (all?) workstation OSes were better. Microsoft was always shit. But it was the piece of shit that IBM endorsed initially, and "nobody was ever fired for recommending IBM."
>but to attempt to paint the victorious as evil, complacent kikes who did nothing but sit on their laurels is ludicrous.
