If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Does the W520 have any motherboard improvements other than the 4 DIMM slots ? Is it generally a good pick over a T520 or an ultra cheap T420 ?
I can only find it at a heavy (40-60% more expensive) premium compared to the T520 in Europe.

A refirbished T530 from ebay for $250 shipped. 8gb, i5 2.5ghz, 128mb SSD, really clean.

Been using a beat to shit 9 year old Dell for way-too-long, so this thing is pimp. I should have jumped on the bandwagon a long time ago. Thanks for existing, /tpg/ . Otherwise, I may have never known this level of comfy.

I don't understand the hate for this newer style keyboard, though. This thing is boss.

what's the best way to do a factory reset on the t420? I've been through installing generic windows and going back through all the drivers but I always feel like I missed something. I always buy them used so I can't just find a recovery disk from where I got it. What should I do?
>>
>>59439028
I odn't like the keyboard feel or design. Plus it's aesthetics are really bad. No ips screen option.
>>
>>59439042
Main issue with the keyboard is what they did to the home-end-insert-delete-pgup-pgdn cluster. On the older models, it was easy to feel which was which because they were different sizes. On this one, not so much, how do you tell home from F12 by feel? Old style seperated F keys into groups of 4, easy to tell apart. This one it's just one big long line of keys.

I use every key in that cluster regularly when typing, except insert. So making it significantly harder to do by touch is a big regresssion imo.

>tfw two mint condition 2570p laptops came in my work the other day
I've been wanting to try one out for awhile. Big fan of the 87xx Workstations, I kinda like the keyboards and build quality, it grew on me, wayy better than Dells before the haswell refresh.

I guess my coworker was having issues witht he E6430 being to big, so I recommended the 2570p and she likes it alot, The Latitude E6430 had a bad battery and I had some palmrest scrolling issue.
However the Elitebooks has a HDD, so I am going to toss the SSD from the E6430 onto the Elitebook.

>>59439042
>9 year old Dell
>during the time when Dell's quality control went to shit vapors
wow anon, big upgrade there.
I think that the only thing will bug you will be the drop of perceived toughness.
The keyboard redesign will only bug those who've had ThinkPads in the past. newcomers will not give a shit because the keyboard already feels amazimg.

I mean I feel the difference when I had the X220 for a quick minute after dailying my T430s and Pixel
But honestly people talk like the T420 keyboard is godlike.
The T420/T410 keyboard is shit compared to a T60. If I had to pick between a T60 or i7 T420, I'd pick the T60, hell I'd even pick a R60e over the T420.
When a T420 goes toe to to against a T430 the only thing it wins is the 6-Row layout (not the keyboard feel)
T430 beats it in CPU peformance (who's going to bios flash a T420?), fucking gaming performance, battery life, display, and it has USB 3.0 ports.
>>
>>59439197
>factory reset
Your best bet is just burning or making a bootable USB of windows.
win 7 you'll need additional drivers to do anything, win 8/8.1 you might not to get ThinkVantage started
Just install LXLE.

After looking at the motherboard layout I realized the T500 cooler actually would work just fine, so I swapped it in. T61 somehow broke a hinge in the process, but sacrifices had to be made in order to achieve sick cooling gains. I don't have a second cooler to put in that one anyway. Pic related was the same amount of time it took to hit 94C with the stock cooler. It's still running now and hasn't broken 80C yet.

X201f (frankenstein).jpg

Still tinkering around with Firefox setup (and may rebuild the kernel at some point), but I think I got everything how I wanted.

Behold, the X201f (f for Frankenstein).
The chassis, fan, and trackpad of an X201, the motherboard and CPU of an X201s (i7-640LM), and the screen of an X200s (1440x900, extra screen space is much needed over 1280x800), 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, all combined for the near-perfect 16:10 Thinkpad.

It's pretty much flawless; it's impossible to get the temperatures above 72C, even when maxing out CPU and GPU (prime95 with heavy WebGL). Super quiet, long-lasting battery (when it had the X201 motherboard it would get 9-10 hours 0-100%), although I haven't tested it fully with the new setup. It's fast as fuck for day-to-day use, but compiling takes quite a bit of time. The Linux kernel with default configs takes about 1.25 hours to compile with -j5. However, note that it only gets to about 60C when doing that maximum, hovering around 50-55C usually.

I'm now running musl Void Linux with dwm, st, firefox, and dmenu with GohuFont. Unless you're using a heavyweight DE, Void is actually polished as hell, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a minimalist distribution.

The only real problems I have are with the BIOS; the reseller removed the BIOS serial number, making it complain with a 2200 warning every time it boots (wasting ~2 seconds, and completely irremovable, since I can't get a service USB to boot). Since this machine is compatible with coreboot, the idea is to flash it with coreboot once I have the proper equipment and time, allowing for much faster boot times, no annoying warning, and more free firmware.

tl;dr: I highly recommend this frankenpad to any and everyone.

last sidenote: the screen has a light blue tint and uneven backlighting, which is much worse in pictures; in reality, it's hardly noticeable unless you're trying to see it. It's fine for text and web browsing, but not for photo editing.

My laptop just died and I'm thinking about buying a cheap laptop replacement. Used thinkpads look like a good place to start. I have a thinkpad 600E, but it is a little dated for my comfort. From what I understand, lenovo owns the thinkpad brand now, instead of IBM. Have they fucked it up? I really hate lenovo with a passion. Probably one of my least favorite companies. Their laptops feel like garbage, and the company itself is even more garbage, installing sketchy shit into their bios and such. So on one hand, I want absolutely nothing to do with lenovo, second hand or not. On one hand, I still think fondly of the thinkpad brand. Is it worth my time or did china fuck another thing up?
>>
>>59444054
Shittiest ultranav you can find out there, the lack of physical buttons make the trackpoint unusable and the trackpad is a turd

>>
>>59444155
Didn't know about that, seems like I don't lurk enough sorry

By the way, is the fix something that works perfectly or does it has flaws like the T430/T420 keyboard thing?
>>
What laptop should I get? I want the following:
>Decent GPU. Given that Nvidia and Optimus are absolute cancer on Linux, that means I basically need a modern Intel GPU like the 520.
>Decent CPU and ram. I don't really care desu. The best CPU in the t420 is more than good enough for me.
>Good (t420 tier) build quality and keyboard. It sounds retarded but I actually want something that has some weight, not MacBook tier that I'll drop all the time.
>Good Linux support
I don't care about the screen, battery or heat that much, and I don't care about price. I would get a t420 but the GPUs are too shitty.
>>
>>59444088
You can by one from the T/X/W series with confidence up to the 20 models, 30 are said to be good too but I don't own anything newer than a X220t and a W520
>>
>>59444178
Only thing is that it's not totally flat with the palm rest maybe 0.5-1mm higher, which doesn't bother me.
Works fine with linux, with windows 10 it works fine until you preform a update, then the physical buttons stop working and you have to edit some registries, after that everything works fine again.
>>
>>59444242
My W530 was absolute dog shit. Glad to finally upgrade to T420 from it.
>>
>>59444364
What problems did you have with it?
>>
>>59444367
Battery failure
Random crashes when the computer was moved (probably a faulty system protecting the machine from large impacts, falling, etc.)
One corner of the keyboard was squeaky
Touchpad lost it's bumpy texture very quickly
Random power failures that ultimately rendered the machine pretty much unusable
Poorly insulation, could feel electricity by touching metal parts of the ports or the fingerprint scanner

Just to name a few.
>>
>>59444411
While some of those problems are part of the risk of buying used laptops, I have to admit it does indeed not sound really appealing

Out of curiosity, why switch from the W to the T series?
>>
>>59444462
I bought my W530 as new, not used. I used to own a T410 earlier so I knew the build quality of T420 would be better. Only thing I miss from the newer machines are the better screens but I can live with that.

Are you actually experiencing stutter? Simply running hot doesn't sound all that bad and the HD 3000 struggle isn't any surprise to me. Trying to make MPV's config less taxing will quickly eat in to the quality of video output if you want to reduce heat.

This is probalby the machine closest to what I would consider "the people's computer". I mean, there have been people who have dreamt about everyone having a car so the Ford Model T and the VW Beetle came around. They were cheap enough for the average person to buy one, cheap to operate and realiable for many years. Put this computer into production, maybe with updated key components, especially CPU, to make it a bit more modern and sell it for a reasonable price (I don't really know how much it costs to produce these but fuck me if it can't be sold for <$800) and you might just have the PC to end all PCs. Just, for the production models it should come with a proper DE instead of tiling. The general public isn't interested to learn how to use shit again. It should resemble Windows as closely as possible.

why not just get an x201s? Any benefit to the chassis of the x201?

>>
>>59446942
That's only true of the slim T series. The X200, X201, X200s, and X201s all take the same batteries. The benefit of the X201 chassis and fan would be better cooling, as the X201s only has one side vent, instead of the usual two in the corner, and its cooler is smaller and less capable as well.

Don't ask me. It's basically perfect, aside from the BIOS and small backlighting issues.

That's exactly what I was aiming for! Thinkpads are already closer to the ideal "Model T" style that you're talking about, but this is as close as I've come to seeing it.
If they made a 4:3 12" laptop with OLED or a low-power requirement screen (OLED or somesuch) at 1080p or 1440x900, a M7 or ARM CPU, with libre boot code (coreboot/libreboot), and that ran actual desktop Linux (vanilla Unity, LXQt, KDE, or GNOME), I would buy it in a heartbeat.
This is as close as possible as that ideal, and I wish it were a more common desire.

make sure you got the modded bios installed because egpu + 16gb ram in an x220 with stock bios shits the bed hard for some reason. or just take it down to 8 gb

http://www.mediafire.com/file/94m8c5jdt2yoaft/X220_v1.43_Modified_BIOS.zip

pe4c 3.0 adapter is considered to be more stable than the expgdc beast v8, but it's also way more expensive and more awkward to position on a desk due to the rigidity + length of its data cable. i haven't had any problems with my exp gdc. get the expresscard version of whichever one you choose

dell da-2 power supply is better looking vs some atx psu with wires all over the place on your desk. it can do 220w, which is enough for any card worth using in this hacky-ass setup.

as for the gpu, consider the fact that performance will be limited by bandwidth and the fact you want to reroute the video data back to the internal screen. don't get something crazy powerful that will just end up kneecapped by the fact you're cramming all this data through a single pcie lane. you will want an nvidia card that has optimus support since it will work way better on the internal screen than any amd, thanks to its gpu switching and data compression tech. don't get a 10xx , as their drivers are being fucky with egpu setups. 750 ti is a good choice, with its fairly balanced bandwidth/performance, and can be powered by just the pci slot. a 75w 950 might be good too. a low profile 1050 ti would be awesome for power and portability, if the drivers weren't a mess.

I'm selling my PC, because it's wasting space and I feel I can condense the activity that occurs on my PC to a laptop, I just need some help.

Ideally, I'd like it to be 13" @ 1080p and I'd be inclined to upgrade the RAM and HDD to 16GiB and 2TiB. I'd like it to be powerful enough so that it can play SOME games. I'm not interesting in the lame graphics whore type games, it would mostly be for emulation I suppose, because it would be a Linux machine.

T460 owner here,

>Build quality
Alright compared to most laptops today
but absolute shit compared to the older (pre t420) thinkpads.
I've dropped my t460 2 times already, once on the edge with the battery.
This made one of the battery holding switches pop out and have the battery be losely held in place, and the screen slightly bent outwards because of malformed hinges.
Second time I dropped was game over, I pulled on a headphone cable and the laptop fell face down from a table about waist height.
This caused both hinges to break off the laptop, and the screen to eventually fail.
Compare this to my t40 which I have thrown multiple times across the room in fits of rage and still works perfectly.
The new thinkpad durability is shit.
>Keyboard
Even though all the nig/g/ers here complain about the new keyboard being the worst thing about the new thinkpads,
its actually quite good, and I would say much better for typing than the old t40 keyboard.
The t460 keyboard has much more clicker and responsive than the t40 keyboard,
and the spaced out keys give me much less mis-typed words.
The only thing that is better on the pre-t420 keyboards are the layout,
which is very important because everyone on /g/ is a professional video editor
that uses millions of key-shortcuts that all use the home, end, insert, and delete buttons.
>Screen
T460 screen was superb, I have the model which had the 1080p IPS display.
Screen was bright, colors were great, and the resolution was sharp.
However, all this does not matter if the screen is not attached to the computer anymore from a fall off a table.
There are older thinkpads that have screens that are on par (x220 IPS display)
or even better (t60 Boe-Hydis AFFS display) than the newer thinkpads.

(Continued)
>>
>>59439600
rear ports are fucking shit.
>>
>>59452225
>Linux Support
Despite what everyone tells you, absolute shit.
Yeah, wifi drivers will work out of the box on even the most difficult of distros (Gentoo),
and graphics drivers too (no shit its intel HD graphics).
However, there are so many other fucking problems with linux on this shit.
The clit mouse is as hard as dehydrated shit to get working on.
You have to fuck around in the xorg.conf for a couple of hours with joystick variables to get the trackpoint to work.
And because of the oversized trackpad for nigger fingers, you have to disable it.
But guess what dipshit, even after you disable the trackpad,
if you put your palm on the trackpad while using the trackpoint like a normal person,
the trackpoint will zig zag like a shit headed fuck high on ASSSSSS.
So, you have to arch your hand like a fucking spider to use the trackpoint.

In short, the new thinkpad is as bad as /g/ers say on /tpg/, but not for the reasons they say.
Go get yourself a x220 or build yourself a t601f so you can be the most badass fucking shit in this thread,
and stay clear of the lenovo chinkshit chicken-shit bullshit.

Another thing you should do while it's open is to replace the thermal paste, or the fan if it's dusty.

Take all the batteries (including the CMOS battery on the motherboard) out of the laptop. Let the laptop sit for a day to make sure all the charge has disapated. Then get some 99%-100% isopropyl alcohol (has to be pure isopropyl, no distilled water) and a sealable plastic tub that will hold your laptop. Fill the tub with your isopropyl alcohol (do this in a well ventilated area unless you want to go blind and have your house stink), and dunk your laptop into the tub. Let it sit for about a day and take it out, wipe it down a bit with a rag inside and out, let it dry in a well ventilated area for a day. And presto, you've got yourself a shit-free, sterile laptop.

Its shit. Currently typing from my T430 and this screen makes me want to stab my eyes out. Viewing angles are absolute shit, brightness is shit, contrast is shit and I can see the little crosses on the screen surface. I think you can replace it with any 14" screen just make sure the connector fits. All the screens seem to go for $50 cad right now on ebay so I might have to stick it out with this abomination of a display for a while longer.

okay, i need hand here with the custom boot splash images on my X230T, the Lenovo flash utility has a .txt that states the image must be a BMP/GIF o JPG file with a max filesize of 30kb and max res of 640x480.

so i made a design on photoshop. tweaked with the color palette and managed to get it to 18 kb, it flash fine but the result is this.

I use a new 840 at work, and a T530 at home.

They are roughly the same specs, same OS, and perform about the same. I like the keyboard MUCH better on the ThinkPad - great feel. The touchpad and buttons are more simple on the Elitebook which I think is better. Overall, the ThinkPad feels more "premium" and comfortable to live with. The Elitebook is rather minimalist, but has a VERY solid and sturdy build.

quick question, I just did a clean install of windows 7 and I'm looking at the guide to installing drivers

https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/migr-74108#app_util_install

>At this point there are two methods for Device driver and Application installs. The simplest is to use ThinkVantage System Update to download and automatically install all the required device drivers and applications. This method also ensures that device driver and application dependencies and co-requisites' are installed correctly.

So I did the ThinkVantage System Update but theres also a huge list of drivers on the bottom but I dont think I have those (like the power manager). Do I have to install those too?

power manager is the only one of the lenovo applications that is useful, everything else is bloat

Reminder to check if you qualify for the battery recall: https://support.lenovo.com/nz/en/solutions/hf004122

Go through the manual process, enter in the model number & sn in lower case with no -'s, and see if you qualify for a free replacement battery.

Just did it for a battery from 2012, it isn't just new ones that qualify. Will they replace them for laptops purchased secondhand too? Also this info should be in the op.

See the part in the op, where it says reccomended models to buy? One of those.

X220 is my personal preference, because it has the option for the IPS screen, default screen on X220/T420 sucks.

You can buy a newer model, but for a cheap secondary laptop to run linux on, you should just save the money and buy a cheap used older model.
