If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine.
1) Use a live image and to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

What happens when a package has a critical vulnerability in Debian stable? From what I have gathered, packages in Debian stable are frozen until the next Debian release. So are you just left vulnerable?

If the vulnerabilities are patched, then does that mean packages are only frozen up to the last release which fixed a security flaw?

Negative. Debian stable gets security updates when available. Debian testing is "frozen" Debian unstable, it may get updates later than stable.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Google, is in fact, NSA/Google, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, NSA plus Google. Google is not an evil corporation unto itself, but rather another corporate component of a fully functioning NSA system made useful by the NSA PRISM project, Boundless Informant, and vital Bullrun backdoors comprising a full Ministry of Truth as exposed by Snowden.

Many computer users run a modified version of the NSA system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of NSA which is widely used today is often called “Google”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the NSA, developed by the NSA Project.

There really is a Google, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Google is the search engine, etc: the web apps in the system that direct the user's attention. The search engine is an essential part of an espionage system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete espionage system. Google is normally used in combination with the NSA espionage system: the whole system is basically NSA with Google added, or NSA/Google. All the so-called “Google” website is really the data collection frontend of NSA/Google.

How would one make a shared folder with samba through wifi router?
My setup:
- Linux laptop
- Windows laptop
(- is android phones can connect to this folder?)

Trying to share folder from my linux laptop.
DIR: /home/myuser/Public
my smb.conf: http://pastebin.com/xHir31bZ

- I did logged in from windows laptop
- When I uncomment [Homes], sharing home dirs - works, I can browse every file/dir on my linux laptop, but that's not what I want

When I try to open shared folder ([Public]) with windows laptop it complains that there is no such directory...

I have a problem, and I'm already embarrassed because i know the solution will be something really simple that I just didn't think of.
So basically, I made a bootable Ubuntu USB stick, and while I apparently should have used something else, I decided to go for that Startup Disk Creator tool that comes with Ubuntu, for extracting the iso.
It created a fucked up partition and I can't get rid of it now. GParted says it doesnt even recognise the filesystem, and it can't be deleted.
The only thing I could think of was overwriting the first MiB of the stick with zeroes, to get rid of the partition tables, but fuck me, that didn't work either.

I happen to be a licensed ham so I'm looking for a wifi card that can go out of band on 5GHz and also use monitor mode to transmit low latency packets, but the only chip that lets you go out of band (into ham bands) is the Atheros 7010 which there is not a single product out there with either a soldered coax or a connector of some sort. I might have to settle with 2.4ghz or buy normie FPV gear.

It works by checking for packages installed from "non-free" or "contrib". Not by the packages licences themselves.

Ubuntu doesn't use "non-free" or "contrib" but shit like "universe".

It is, but nobody cares about that. What matters is your ability to get vim with both python and racket support whereas you'd have to choose one or the other in any other distro. Stability is also objectively another huge plus. Part of it is because due to the source installs, you compile things against libraries you actually have, not what upstream thinks you have, which means programs don't call the wrong address on a dynamic library, for example. Another reason is that you don't have to pull in an unstable library if you want an unstable program that requires a library (again, because of source installs), which makes the entire system mostly stable with only unstable package for the packages that should be unstable. Contrast with other distros where if you want unstable anything, you have to upgrade half the system to unstable.

Additionally, gentoo makes security a lot easier due to its great support for PaX/grsecurity patches, among other things.

Say, I'm downloading a game, and need to extract it in Japanese Locale. How does one achieve this?

Also, is it possible to do it without saving the zip file? Like when you download it you choose "Open with Archive Manager" and then somehow extract it's contents in Japanese locale?
>>
>>59365849
GNU does not have this problem.
>>
>>59365715
Use the touch command. Use bash's $RANDOM environment variable to generate random numbers.
You should be able to figure the rest out.
>>
>>59365715
man stat
man touch

I added stretch to my sources, updated my package list, downloaded a few packages and now am back at jessie. How do I downgrade all the packages that were installed by stretch?

>>59363588
Try sudo update-grub. It'll detect other operating systems and add them to grub's menu.

Oh thanks, I was worried for a sec. What about running in Japanese locale? Is there an equivalent of Applocale for Linux?
>>
>>59365849
Japanese files can be really tricky to unzip properly for some reason.

One thing you can try is to just use 7zip. I'm not sure if there's a GUI for it, but if there is then that might allow you to achieve your goal of not having to download the archive first.

If that doesn't work you can try unzipping with the option
unzip -O CP932 file.zip

Not sure how you would do this from a GUI extractor though. Maybe see if you can find CP932 in the settings anywhere

What's the best AUR helper?
I use pacaur right now, but it sucks because
>Interactive PKGBUILDs have never been supported and never will be.
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1694573#p1694573

so I can't even install linux-ck properly. Is cower any good? According to https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AUR_helpers only pacaur is good.

cower

By the way, anyone knows to fix the gpg problem in Arch?

$ gpg --recv-keys --keyserver hkp://pgp.mit.edu 1EB2638FF56C0C53
gpg: keyserver receive failed: No keyserver available

I've already downgraded to gnupg-2.1.16-2 (apparently it should fix it) but still I can't add any keys (pacman-key works though)

fucked up order but it doesn't matter

You should only get it if:
-Bored of Windows/Mac
-You don't want to be at 33% ram by default #windows
-Easy start to programming/scripting/serverbuilding
-You want to customize your system to your wishs
-you want to be hacker
-don't wanna use printer (driver hell)

And not if:
-gaming
-mainstream fucker
-botnet welcome
